  • Now that we have a couple Indian Scouts, we needed an inexpensive way to pick up "necessities".
    Bought a pair of Harbor Freight Apache 3800 cases to use as luggage.

    Great video Jon - You are still the superb craftsman I remember from years ago when you lived in Effingham and were building and flying ultralight aircraft. At 86 years, I'm no longer up to "playing in traffic" on my motorcycle, so I sold it a few years ago to a neighbor here in Windsock Village.

    Great video John. This was interesting. I'm getting too old for big bikes so bought a 2022 Royal Enfield Classic 350, (Signals Edition in Desert Sand), just for putting around the back country roads here in N.E. Ohio. Since it looks like an old post WWII style, I looked at the Apache at Harbor freight but then their 50mm Ammo Cans caught my attention. Close by were the 5 gallon Jerry Cans. Hinge the top of the Jerry Cans and instant saddlebags! Better yet, Rampage Products already makes hinged Jerry Cans for storage!I uploaded a TH-cam vid ... Jerry Can Saddlebags for the Classic 350. Unfortunately, they are out of proportion (too big), for the little thumper! Now I'm contemplating a way to shorten them from 17 inches high to about 12.
    Your imagination for invention ... (while remaining "Frugal") ... gives me new Inspiration! I remember watching the Smothers Brothers on TV (in the 60's) and Tommy saying "Necessity Is the Mother of Invention!"

    I'm also trying to figure/finagle a mount & release system (with lock/security) using Harbor Freight Cases for my CRF 300L Rally. This is perhaps the Best I've seen yet! One of the nicest aspects of your ingenious build was how "OEM Factory" slick/swank those Chrome Spools looked & matched your Indian while your Cases were removed! Added surprises, benefits like these often occur when you courageously trust your own ingenuity, skills to solve your own problems and humbly meet your own needs! Rather than simply spending, consuming - one should pause to consider/utilize materials that you already own, have rather than simply relying on others. By trusting & applying YOUR OWN artistic mind, problem solving skills men are often surprised at their own ability to "invent or create" something far more unique, customized & superior to mere widgets massly produced. Bravo!

      @@grandpasmountain you are welcome. but after i placed the comment, i found the Honda X-ADV 750....... and i fell in love. i want that one. it is the perfect blend for me. i love the Indian Scout with how it sounds and looks, but it is not practical enough for me. i like a good windscreen, good seating position and cargo capacity. the X-ADV has it all for me. any standard knees-bent-with-ankle-at-shoulder-line is not suited for me because i have very long legs. so that forced me towards motorcycles like the Indian Scout. until i found the X-ADV. my first motorcycle was a Honda VT500C and i loved it. a big twin smile on my face every single time i opened that throttle. but after a while it became clear that it was not practical enough for the kind of use i required from it. anything above 80km/h was painful ( wind ) and the pegs were too far back. and there was no space to put decent cargo because the exhaust system had to be made so it pointed upwards.
      the X-ADV is not a v-twin but it still sounds amazing to me, even with the default exhaust.

    Jon, Do you think you might need a reinforcing plate on the inside of the cases? One for each set of four mounting screws. So four plates with four holes for each bike. I had cracking and layer separation issues on my Norton Commando's hard bags back in the 70's. Lots of hard highway miles and vibration caused the material fatigue. But a great project, , well thought out and executed.
    Is the bungalow now available as an Air B&B?

    • @grandpasmountain
      @grandpasmountain  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Max!
      Not worried --- this a much different material than your bags were. 1/4" thick and will not crack.
      Thanks for thinking of me --- I had initially expected to need interior reinforcing, but am confident in the material after working with it.

    Comment were turned off on your saw mill video. My brother and I are building sawmills. He had started the business and then quit do to health issues. Now we are starting it up again. I don't think he had a brand name. He did have a model for the different sizes. He also builds custom mills to order. He is in the process of building a couple new models. I should be having a video or two on my channel in the next month or so demonstrating one of the new models. Don't know prices. It all depends on options added to each mill.
