Great idea for the lug wrench, bottle jack storage and spare tire mounting! 13" tires and wheels are a nice upgrade as well. I'm planning on welding my frame together since it won't be folded, being used as a base for a tear drop.

Great mods, and I've done a bunch myself on my 1750 lb version, including putting in a recessed wheel chock in the front half for my motorcycle. I also put 4" x 4" E-Track mounts on the deck (3 down each side for a total of 6). And speaking of the deck, that's the one weakness I saw on this build. I would avoid the 'engineered' particle plywood and go with ACX roofing plywood, and treat that with Copper Green, primer, then paint with a high-grade exterior paint and mix-in some non-slip paint additive. The side rails seem to be a little on the weak side for most trailer applications, especially if hauling heavier loads. I'm designing some for my trailer and will be using 2x6" redwood, with steel locking brackets on the front, and steel gate latches in the rear. I didn't bother cutting bolts to secure the side rails, and purchased two packages (5 ea. for a total of 10) pre-drilled 3/8" pins for the stake-bed rails and will use the cotter-pins and washers too (and secure those with small wire cables so they don't get lost/stolen). I will mount the spare to the front rail using the spare tire mount from HF, and am designing something to secure the ramp I purchased. Adding a 1"x1"x 4' 90deg aluminum edge to the rear will keep the plywood from being damaged when loading/unloading. Instead of welding a latch to hold the trailer folded, I put eye-hooks on the corners and use d-rings or carabiners to hold it together while folded upright for storage. I put grounds on at all the side-marker lights and other places since that seems to be one of the weak links on these trailers. Using wire looms on all the wiring, then securing them to various parts of the undercarriage secures everything neatly and protects the wiring from the elements. As for the bearings, I've had good luck with them in past, but this time I took out the old (blue) grease they come with, and re-packed with high-grade wheel bearing grease. Of course I added the trailer jack and upgraded the 'cheapy' casters to slightly bigger ones to make it easier to roll around over rough surfaces. I gave it some thought about the bigger tires, but will look at that for a future upgrade. Anyways, well done.
I used hinges in the corner of my rails, and padlock latches and pins in back. Pulling the hinge pins makes storage a breeze. I also put 6 light duty d-rings around the trailer rails. I used rivnuts. Makes securing loads a breeze. I use one of the ratchet straps to secure the trailer when folded.

Good to know ST175/80R13 fits without needing to move fender higher. But I would still do that if it's not too difficult to maximize load capacity of the trailer.
This is a great video! With space constraints, this is the trailer for me, and the fact that my stepson is a welder means that if I can picture it, he can build it. :-) This video is a great jumping off point.
Thanks for sharing! I’ve been thinking of getting one of these trailers for a while now to use for camping gear and our kayaks. Definitely going to get one now after seeing all of your modifications.
I LOVE your onboard tools! That said I would include a more positive lock or holder for each item, and not count on only those spring clips to keep their grip under all circumstances. Would hate to have a 4-way launch from beneath the vehicle right in front of me one day! I've had my HF foldable since about 2003 and have put it through literal tons of work. Once had 8 Volvo engines at a time on the thing! Also loads of cement bags and cinder blocks. The last couple weeks I've been doing a bunch of mods I've long wanted. One is smaller lights in welded frames, because I've gone through half a dozen sets of regular bolt on stock trailer lights. They always BREAK around the mounting bolts, not even counting the times I munted them on an obstacle or while dumping. I upgraded to LED side lights years ago and put an amber clearance light on the tongue by the hitch so aggressive drivers thinking of dipping in behind you get a clear visual sign that there's a trailer behind. For the license plate which has gotten bent dozens of times over the years, I ended up making a solid frame on the caster mount, so the plate is "staring at the ground" when the trailer is folded up and stowed. I considered mounting near the original location using hinges or chains so it could move instead of bend/break, but every way I tried to configure this was more work and less safe for the plate in use, plus it would dangle into the way when stowed. Mounting on the caster mount bar solved so many problems without presenting any new ones. Recessed a light up under the frame rails to shine on the whole plate but not out at other drivers' eyes, without any fancy shrouding. I upgraded to 13" trailer radials and need to get deep dish wheels, I have too little clearance to the frame and sides and one tire chafes badly when loaded. I also upgraded the bearings, seals, and grease very early in the trailer's life. For hardware to connect the sides, search "stake side hardware." I have 2 kinds, 1 passively mates into the other when installed in the correct order which I have on the back of the dump trailer, the other kind manually latches and unlatches much like a gate lock, and any side can be removed in any order, for the lower/heavier open set of sides that are as likely to be used for un/loading from the side as the rear. Very evolved designs and heavy duty, they mate together smoothly and hold firm in the directions sides try to move relative to each other while in motion.
I built a teardrop trailer on one of these. I have over 24000 miles on it. I was thinking of upgrading to 13" wheels as the HF ones don't last very long; but I was concerned I would need to modify the fenders or buy expensive spacers. thanks for the links to parts that will work.
Great video! Can you please elaborate more on your aluminum spare tire mount? (Or maybe a separate video on the topic?) Is there a total of 5 sticks of aluminum tubing? What's in the tongue C-channel so it can be bolted to the frame? What angle did you use for the sides? Did you have to trim the height of the angle before you riveted it? Looks like a flat piece of aluminum over the center piece that attaches the wheel? How did you secure the nut? Is the handle that goes under the wheel another short piece of aluminum?
As was said before, OSB is not plywood and will degrade faster. I put down 3/4" ply on mine in 2015, its sat in ready to use form & do not have any decay. The comment about 4 pin vs 7 pin is not completely true. My truck came with the 4 pin and I prefer it. One suggestion that I did was put a T-nut on the backside of th 2 X 4 then bolt it in. Snugs it down nice and tight. Trailer jack is, to me, a must. Good comment. Love the tire caddy & latch. And yes, they should be standard. When I built mine, I threw away the metric crap and used SAE hardware. I chose to use regular nuts, washers, and bolts but i used regular lock washers instead of those nylon locknuts. And for the brackets I got the regular L-brackets that are pre-drilled. I'm not very sure about your jack & lug wrench placement. Totally agree about the tires & wheels as well. One thing I will say is be sure, with the lug nuts, is to make dang well sure that the conical end goes into the hole. Very expensive learning point for me. Please tell us, where did you get those steel casters? I need them badly! 😂😂😂. And I love the ratchet strap idea. Great video sir!
Latch is a great idea. If you fold with back last, you don't need a strap. Loosen nut for tongue, and while folding up, let back drop on floor. Then fold the back up.
Any chance you'd do a video detailing your wiring of this trailer? I have purchased an updated wiring harness, which carries the ground to all 4 lights without the need to ground it to the trailer, however, routing them has proven to be a pain! I've purchased upgraded bearings and seals (wish I had seen your affiliate link beforehand) and also Bearing Buddies for the hub. I'll use your affiliate links when I upgrade my wheels/tires. Thanks for your videos!
Really like the larger, 13” rims & tires. However, when I put mine on I did have to do some adjusting to the fenders or they rubbed the backside of the tires. Not a big deal & definitely worth it.
I bought one about 10 years ago. Shortly after that, HF sent me notice that the stock tail lights had a recall for water intrusion. They sent me some new LED tail lights for free.
I haven't bought mine yet. Thanks for your video which showed me great ideas when I build mine.Any thoughts on mounting an electric wench on the trailer and constructing a fold down rear ramp?
your audio setup paired with your voice is awesome. it sounds like a voice-over in a studio setup but I think it is all recorded with your lap mic? Oh, and the contents of the video is great, too. Subscribed.
I used 3/4 marine grade plywood, it still folds fine with a bungee, 5 years later looks like new. My fence looks very close to this one and it allows you to load a ton of crap!
I like the idea of the tire increase. Where did you find them? I'm thinking of either getting them or just adding another axle of the same size to increase the load rating
Hi there really liked the video I’m thinking of buying this little trailer too for my 12 ft v hull aluminum boat too , how do you secure it down to the trailer?? Thank you ‘
This is really well thought out. Is there a folding trailer that already come with all these upgrades? Having to do all these are not just time consuming but costly.
It really is too bad that no one makes an assembled folding trailer with these upgrades. Perhaps someone will someday because I think there is a market for them. Thanks for watching!
How about quick disconnect for the wiring to the folding tongue? I have a spot this could be stored in if it were shorter. Fold the deck, wheel it into place and remove the tongue.
Do you remove the 6 screws every time you fold up the trailer. We are looking for an easier way to fold it without having to put the frame screws back in each time.
I only use two of those carriage bolts, the two that face the side and go through the side rail of the trailer and the upright edge of the hanger spring rail. (This bolt is easily accessible between the tire and the caster bracket) I keep a 17 mm socket handy for this.
Nice video thanks. Does anyone know why these are not sold in certain states? They don't sell them here in PA. Just wondering if it doesn't meet some sort of Pennsylvania DOT requirement?
congratulations on the video!!! after seeing your video I was sure that I will do a good deal buying this trailer. I live in NYC, a question did you have to change your document because you changed the wheel 🛞 to number 13?
I was really questioning my choice of OSB, but now that it has been many years and I have had no issues, it seems to have all worked out OK . OSB certainly does have a “lifespan“, particularly because I have it in and out of water with my boat but. Because OSB is so cheap and it lasted a number of years, I can do it again and reuse the hardware.

Great mods, suggest adding to save the. Original races and bearings repacked in zip lock bag in case of a rode emergency...like your tire spare idea. Thanks.
Wow really great ideas and well presented. How much you reckon all these mod costs? Wonder if it just makes sense to buy a better quality trailer that would come with these kinds of creature comforts built in
Thanks for the comments. It’s hard to find a folding trailer with upgrades. The 13” wheels are the real gem of these mods. With a better ride, a closer match to my truck and much faster highway speeds all for under $200.
The wheel spacers were the main modification. These wheels are wider and tend to rub the frame. I also tweaked the fender brackets a bit. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video! Lots of great information in a quick format. You definitely convinced me to buy this trailer and use your upgrades. One question: how do you secure your boat to the trailer?
Do the metal wheels roll better than the original plastic wheels? I would think they'd be more likely to get stuck on non smooth bits of pavement and whatnot. To me, larger, rubber wheels would make the most sense?
The original plastic rollers didn’t roll well, they would get stuck and drag leaving flat spots. The cast iron casters are rated for 125lbs each and roll very well. Moving to larger wheels would not allow the tailer to pass under the garage door. Thanks for watching!
@@MrFredsDIY thanks for the feedback! Really like your video. Have you found a good way to do wire management? I have damaged my harness multiple times during folding and unfolding
I have corrugated loom tubing around most of my wires. I have zip ties on either side of the hinge with enough slack to allow for folding. I also damaged mine originally before this solution. Good luck! amzn.to/3QVkTdH
Please describe step by step(if possible) adding the flooring. Looking at my trailor...did you just lay the board ON TOP of the existing bolts and THEN add bolts to secure the floor? If so, did laying the floor on top of the existying bolts create issues?
First, thanks for checking out the video! I did place the flooring over top of the frame bolts however, I used a Forster drill bit the size if the bolt heads to give relief to the flooring so it would lay flat. I also made sure that my trailer was square before I tightened everything down. Good luck with your project.!
I kept the same fenders, but I did have to adjust the brackets slightly by bending them to be more upright and not slanting out. I also used wheel spacers.
Hey boss man, great video, I actually have a folding harbor freight 4 x 8 trailer but it has four lug wheels. I found a suitable upgrade, I think, at tractor supply company it’s a 13 inch 5.30 already mounted on the floor log rim I believe these are 13 inch. For around town the factory wheels that the trailer came with are probably fine but I have a road trip coming up where I’ll be traveling about 150 miles round-trip at highway speed probably around 65 mph average and I’ll be towing a dirtbike and ATV so I will be well within the towing capacity since the bike is only 200 pounds and the ATV is 375. I actually located these Carlisle tires at Walmart as well. Just wanted to see if they offer a four lug wheel if not, I’m probably gonna go with the tractor supply set up any other pointers would be appreciated. Thanks brother.
The TSC option might work out well but I’ve never tried it. Check the price of the 5 lug trailer from HF. It might only be a few hundred bucks more than the axle upgrade? Thanks for checking out the video!
The short answer is no not really. The spacers move the wheels out enough to keep the tires from rubbing the fender bracket and trailer frame. I have a couple of inches for height clearance as well. The factory fender brackets a thin and one was bent at more of an angle than the other. I did tweak them both by bending them a little more upright. As far as truly modifying them, I did not. Thanks for watching!
Nice trailer mods. I noticed that you have a vegas license plate, I’m also in vegas and been searching for diy enclosed builds. The trailer I have now is to small and not to the standards I like it to be.
I’m about to grab the harbor freight 5x8 (think those are measurements) 1700+lb load weight foldable trailer so I can grab my broken down bike for free instead of renting uhauls every time lol. I like the idea of upgraded wheels /tires and bearings , am curious are these type of trailers a standard size that bearings are a direct fit ? Meaning no drive axle or hub type of changes will be needed for bearing fitment ?
The bearing size is available on Amazon. I made a video for repacking bearings for my trailer, and there is a link in the description. The bearings from Amazon are an upgrade from the bearings that came with my trailer. Here is that video.th-cam.com/video/osH4BiW5Z0E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Rxq-asoBsAZ7FLxl
@@MrFredsDIY yeah I’ve saved the bearings from the link ..what I meant is , is the size a size used by most trailers this size ,or by all harbor freight trailers of this style? I ask in case I’m getting a slightly different trailer (harbor freight has at least two{but think more} different models in this range of trailers . So if I have to find I.D. Or O.D. Diameters of axels/hubs before getting bearings … I’m planning ahead at the moment trying to set a budget for a half decent utility trailer..thanks
OSB is for interior use friend. Any defect, or edge, is going to swell 15% and have no structural rigidity. Ideally marine grade or even fiberglass clad. As for the thickness problem - that's where your welding expertise comes into play. That rail fence looks cheap but the cost is over the top, especially when time counts. Next time I'm going to use scrap thin wall tube. There's got to be a better way. GREAT INFO But it makes more sense to buy an upgraded DIY TRAILER KIT - maybe. Gonna look for one.
Nice tips! I got the same trailer but no plans for folding, my boat will stay on it. Definitely like the spare tire set up...oh damn I actually have the 1,195 lb cap trailer. Do you think it would still be easy to find those 13's for a 4 lug?
Those wheels might be hard to find. You can always take a wheel to Discount tire and see what they can look up. I was surprised that they sell a variety of generic white trailer rims.
Compatibility depends on “bolt patterns”. There are numerous bolt pattern charts on line that give specs and instructions for measuring. If you are unsure, it might be best to have someone like discount tire figure out what you need by taking them one of the wheels or driving the trailer there.
@Mr Fred’s DIY Garage School I've found some good info and sale of some 13" wheels...in your opinion since we almost have the same trailer do ya think those st175/80r13 would work? I will take measurements tomorrow..if not I did find some 4.80-12 tires with a 81mph rating on etrailer. In the end it's that higher mph that matters

Are there any cons to upgrading to bigger tires? I have 8inch wheels and like to up grade to 10, maybe 12 inches. Might have to raise the fenders.
Taller tires have so many benefits. I had to use wheel spacers for mine, so they don’t rub the frame, but I had plenty of clearance for my fenders.
A bit harder to load heavy items because the bed is higher.@@tinytim9453

Planning on getting one of these and welding it together as well. Did you upgrade the wheel size too?
Not yet, just four lug, 12' tired.
You neglected to mention your 5 lug hubs. I used waterproof 3/4 ply for the deck. Maintenance free and frankly my best upgrade. Nice video!
On your rail system, I would use door hinges, that way you just pop the pin when you want to take them apart.
This is awesome. Definitely makes me want one
Thanks for checking out the video! Here is a playlist for a new trailer I have:th-cam.com/play/PLN1CtBYDO93QRLWBz9EYQiLCTUErjC94K.html&si=_JYiWn3vqhS2AL_m
Good luck with your project! Thanks for watching!
AWESOME. THANKS FOR THE INFO. GOD BLESS. 😇
Thanks for sharing! I’ve been thinking of getting one of these trailers for a while now to use for camping gear and our kayaks. Definitely going to get one now after seeing all of your modifications.
Amazing job with the mods I have this trailer and can wait to do some of the things you did with yours. Thanks for this content.
Super awesome. Thanks for sharing these great ideas. I've had a couple of these trailers and they are very useful.
Thanks for commenting! I use the heck out of this trailer.
You have a great voice for video voice over or commercials
Nice. I am in Vegas too and just bought this trailer yesterday. Taking it to Texas in a few days.
Great video and ideas. The best I have seen and I have seen many!
Thank you for the remarks and watching the video!
Could a better quality tire be placed on the rim, or is the rim also limited to 55?
From my understanding it’s the tires that have the speed rating. Thanks for watching!
Great description great ideas 💡
love it 😊 thank you!
I had to tweak mine a bit also. The spacers helped a bunch!
Way to go Mr Fred 👍🏼😬
I bought one about 10 years ago. Shortly after that, HF sent me notice that the stock tail lights had a recall for water intrusion. They sent me some new LED tail lights for free.
These little trailers are pretty nice for the money. With a few mods they are even better!
its funny they did that because they are still selling them with the crappy ones now
thank you these are great trailer upgrades!
What are the clips for the lug wrench at 3:39? Thanks
These are broom spring clips like these amzn.to/3zXSGwb
@@MrFredsDIY thanks, great idea
I haven't bought mine yet. Thanks for your video which showed me great ideas when I build mine.Any thoughts on mounting an electric wench on the trailer and constructing a fold down rear ramp?
Nicely done
I wonder if HF updated the tires. The one on mine is from Carlisle and it's load B rated for 87mph per the tire manufacturers' website.
your audio setup paired with your voice is awesome. it sounds like a voice-over in a studio setup but I think it is all recorded with your lap mic? Oh, and the contents of the video is great, too. Subscribed.
Thank you for sharing.
Wow, very informative. Wasn’t expecting all that. I gave a big thumbs up.
Thanks for watching the video!
I used 3/4 marine grade plywood, it still folds fine with a bungee, 5 years later looks like new.
My fence looks very close to this one and it allows you to load a ton of crap!
Good to know about the plywood.
@@MrFredsDIY Home depot has small non folding trailers very close to this size, $1700.00, Boy I love my HF trailer!
Great ideas.
Fred... Great Video all around...
I like the idea of the tire increase. Where did you find them? I'm thinking of either getting them or just adding another axle of the same size to increase the load rating
There is a link in the video description for the wheels and tires. Thanks for watching!
Fred, this is the first video I have watched from your channel but that was great! Sub’d immediately.
Welcome aboard! Lots of cool projects coming up!
Hi there really liked the video I’m thinking of buying this little trailer too for my 12 ft v hull aluminum boat too , how do you secure it down to the trailer?? Thank you
‘
You would need to build carpeted “bunk boards” to cradle the hull. Perhaps you could investigate HF boat trailers as well!
@@MrFredsDIY thanks bud
Hello, I like this video but where did you buy the spacer for the tires 🛞?
Thanks! I have a link in the video description.
@@MrFredsDIY can you share that video
When you have time 👍

This is really well thought out. Is there a folding trailer that already come with all these upgrades? Having to do all these are not just time consuming but costly.
It really is too bad that no one makes an assembled folding trailer with these upgrades. Perhaps someone will someday because I think there is a market for them. Thanks for watching!
Well done, mate!
good stuff, you've earned my subscription.
How about quick disconnect for the wiring to the folding tongue? I have a spot this could be stored in if it were shorter. Fold the deck, wheel it into place and remove the tongue.
very impressive
Good question! If I find an answer I’ll post it here. Thanks for watching!
congratulations on the video!!! after seeing your video I was sure that I will do a good deal buying this trailer. I live in NYC, a question did you have to change your document because you changed the wheel 🛞 to number 13?
I wouldn't use OSB for that!
Can you talk more about the bearing swap and new wheels and tires, please?

Very cool 😎
I love this little trailer!
Kinda sells me on getting one...or getting a better one with some of the upgrades already done for me...
Did you need to upgrade the axle with the 5 lug tires? I'm having issues figuring out what size hubs I need.
some good ideas here.
Great mods, suggest adding to save the. Original races and bearings repacked in zip lock bag in case of a rode emergency...like your tire spare idea.
Thanks.
Great idea! Thanks for watching!
My HF trailer has the original 4-lug wheels on it. How did you replace them with 5-lug wheels? Thanks! Great video.
My trailer came with 5 lugs. It’s the 1,700 lb heavy duty trailer #62647. Thanks for commenting!
@@MrFredsDIY Ah okay! Mine is the 1450 lb. I bought it in 2005. #90154
How did those wheels fit did you have to modify anything
The wheel spacers were the main modification. These wheels are wider and tend to rub the frame. I also tweaked the fender brackets a bit. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video! Lots of great information in a quick format. You definitely convinced me to buy this trailer and use your upgrades. One question: how do you secure your boat to the trailer?
Thanks for watching! I use four ratchet straps on the corners from the boat rail to the trailer frame.
So helpful 👍🏼
Please describe step by step(if possible) adding the flooring. Looking at my trailor...did you just lay the board ON TOP of the existing bolts and THEN add bolts to secure the floor? If so, did laying the floor on top of the existying bolts create issues?
First, thanks for checking out the video! I did place the flooring over top of the frame bolts however, I used a Forster drill bit the size if the bolt heads to give relief to the flooring so it would lay flat. I also made sure that my trailer was square before I tightened everything down. Good luck with your project.!
Well done. Keep up the great work!
Since you upgraded to 13" rom & tires did you have to change fenders for everything to fit? Thanks.
Did you have to modify the fenders when you upgraded to the 13” wheels and wider tires?
The short answer is no not really. The spacers move the wheels out enough to keep the tires from rubbing the fender bracket and trailer frame. I have a couple of inches for height clearance as well. The factory fender brackets a thin and one was bent at more of an angle than the other. I did tweak them both by bending them a little more upright. As far as truly modifying them, I did not.
Thanks for watching!
@@MrFredsDIY thanks for the info. I’m considering this trailer along with the various other options.
Please send me a link showing what you had to do to upgrade the tires please
Nice trailer mods. I noticed that you have a vegas license plate, I’m also in vegas and been searching for diy enclosed builds. The trailer I have now is to small and not to the standards I like it to be.
These trailers are pretty sturdy. Thanks for watching!
GREAT INFO
But it makes more sense to buy an upgraded DIY TRAILER KIT - maybe. Gonna look for one.
Great video and tips, thanks a lot!!
It’s a great little trailer! Thanks for watching!
Which 5mm spacers did you use for the tire mod? Have a link to them? Any special issues?
These worked well. I did have to tweak the fenders but just by hand. Thanks for watching!➡️spacers here amzn.to/3llSEui
@@MrFredsDIY I see some wheels and tires but unsure what all the compatibility specs are when it comes to hub n axle or if that even matters
