its a translation thing. The word grappler was used to refer to people who competed in shoot wrestling. Shoot wrestling was essentially unscripted full contact pro wrestling in Japan and in a way an early form of mixed martial arts.
This was my favorite Baki animation. The cord cutter fight I watched over and over as a kid. The new Netflix series is great. But I try to get all the youngsters to watch this one. I remember this was my first intro to the Baki character and I watched it by accident. This is amazing! Thanks for the upload.
Imagine how far Anime has gone. Back in the days grownup people were ashamed to admit watching anime. As a teen i could never imagine watching anime after the age of 25yrs of age. Lol i was wrong, now the whole world watches or knows of Anime!
The animation on certain attacks as well as the animation and detail to the injuries? Clearly it’s way better now my guy. Not to mention the character design and animation are also pretty nice. Granted, the character part can be debated depending on personal preferences. Regardless tho, I do love this animation style. Definitely a special place in my heart for 90s anime. It’s still amazingly beautiful in it’s own way.

When I later saw that red haired version I wasn't a fan and thought it was a remake of this since when this came out no one had their hands on the manga and the current knowledge we know now. I still like this versions art and animation style better though

i liked the bizarre charming moments such as Baki kissing the Director's knuckle and worrying about his blood thirsty opponent's safety and ability to continue fighting.. (even aftyer he made one guy blind and another guy have to sneeze forever).
I was just telling my son about this anime I used to watch where the guy would prepare by eating bananas and drinking soda 😂. I’m glad this showed up cause I forgot the name for years.
This reminds me so much of yuyu hakusho. I love both series. The old animation, the sound effects, the similar mc designs and personalities. Both are some of my favorite anime’s I’m glad I noticed the similarities.
I am glad to hear that. There are people who don't like Baki's dubbing with references to Bruce Lee, but I think that this OVA, even though it's based on the MANGA, must be taken as a product apart from the series.

My brother and I are getting back into working out and we started watching Baki and thanks to seeing your vids I knew to watch OG orange hair Baki and it has been fun. Almost done with season 2 and getting ready to start Netflix Baki.
My first introduction to Baki. In reality, a less faithful adaptation to the Manga than the Funmation/Netflix series. Moderately more realistic and more gritty for sure.
So good thank you for posting this never saw it and this gives so much context for the modern seasons. Also got say this makes his fight with Ali Jr alot more impactful. Going from preserving a great fighter by knocking them out to saying Jr. Would have been dead no question. I see why Yujiro chose that moment to accept Bakis challenge.
See the beauty of 80s and 90s anime is that it was such a new thing to us in the West that it went under the radar. Many just assumed that it'd be like any old cartoon. The variety and potential depth didn't really get picked up on until later. It really let us see some great things before more severe censorship came into play.
Here in Brazil I got an VHS from a fansub that had this anime adaptation of Baki and Girl from Phantasia. Pretty weird that they got two very different anime in a single VHS tape, nevertheless this version of Baki is still my favorite adaptation, brings so many memories! Thanks for the upload!

This has, in my opinion, better animation that the newest Baki. You actually see the moves. Plus there isn't a lot of showing the guys falling down, then getting up as if nothing happened. Yes there are, turn the tables moments, but they still show the affects of what was recently beating them.
i think most people would agree this is better, it's just too time consuming to animated the old school way. The newest Baki series pales in comparison to this one.

Baki is wierd as a manga I need a bit of like extra research but from what I remeber and what I've read, this movie is part of the first manga series and even in that context it's setup like a flash back almost, more or less. But like I can't tell if this was just like an original cannon that got abandoned or if it's supposed to be all 1 cannon.

@@landonletterman831 techniqually before/ doesnt happen. Baki is wierd as a manga I need a bit of like extra research but from what I remeber and what I've read, this movie is part of the first manga series and even in that context it's setup like a flash back almost, more or less. But like I can't tell if this was just like an original cannon that got abandoned or if it's supposed to be all 1 cannon.

Man I love baki the grappler. It's not about good or evil, it's about the fight. Even characters you would consider villains aren't necessarily evil, they just want the fight so it is easy to root for anyone in the show, even yujiro

This is probably one of the first anime I ever saw in my life, it started a long road of weirdness that's still going to this day.
Same for me. Saw this around 1996. I had just started getting into anime. Luckily, there was a video store nearby that had a lot of anime. After this, watched movies like Battle Royale High School, Demon City Shinjuku, Ninja Scroll, DBZ....
I wish.but I'm old so honestly the first anime I watched in subtitles was Akira I think. Other than if u count sat morning cartoons like Voltron. Ranger x star blazers etc anime or not. What was cool was I think dbz was not too long after. Also I remember yu Yu Hakusho that was way early and ofc ninja scroll still my fav movie I thinks or top ten anime movies. Lolol 😂😂😂
