I love Alienware but unfortunately i haven't had any luck with their laptops. I bough 6 AW 17 R4 at my local Bestbuy and i had the send them all back. Temperatures where very high up to high 90s. Light bleeding on each of the 6 laptops. Two of them had a gap between the screen and the bezel. I could clearly see glue in it. I end up buying the MSI GT73 VR Titan and although, quality build is superior on the AW, temps are super cool on the MSI. 34-35C on idle and 72C al full load on OCCT. The screen is way superior on the MSI. I'm glad you got a properly working machine. Undoubtedly it is a great machine and way better looking (IMO) than the MSI.
Thinking of buying one of these now in 2019, what do you think? Still worth it? Also, when you mention going down to 1080p in the review, do the graphics take much of a hit or does it still look good? Thanks!
I was looking at the same computer and was considering switching to the Kaby lake for the fuel efficiency when running on battery and shutting down the GTX1070 card in favor of internal graphics. Alienware claims 10 hours battery is achievable obviously under best case... but if I can get 6 internet browsing and video watching I'd be happy. Does the Kaby lake 17R4 still have Nvidia Optimus with graphics switching? do you find the battery life to be better than the prior gen CPUS's?
You will get better battery life with the FHD and the 4K version. I have only tested the 120Hz 1440P Gsync version which sux battery so I can only comment on that. FHD I can imagine 7 hours or so.
Got my Alienware 17 R4 recently... i7-7820HK, GTX 1080, 32 GB RAM, 1440p 120Hz... What are the acceptable CPU and GPU temperatures, while I'm gaming in ultra settings and 1440p? (The temperatures were mid 80s for CPU and late 70s for GPU, when i was playing Watch dogs 2 in ultra)
Hi, I am planning to get the Alienware 17 R4. Could you help me understand whether there's a huge difference between the IPS and QHD displays? I will be using the laptop for gaming and 3D modelling practice. Thanks
hey western gents is the alienware 17 r4 i7 6820hk worth it or should i just get a i7 7700hq model like are the skylake models cooler or do they overheat
Ok Enmity maybe you can compare it to the acer predator 17, with the same price you'll get a better ssd, but thats not gonna do so much difference. AW has their own way for external GPU, though (not that you cant make get one for the Predator 17). It's a very hard choice, in my opinion. Almost only boils down to cosmetic preference
Baris Eray That's because some of them configured a 15" with a 1070 or a 13" with a 1070. Just so you know 1060,1070 and 1080 are desktop card, so it was difficult for the laptop to cool the GPU since it was meant for a desktop.
its too bad they bottleneck the 1070 with that 6700hq. Otherwise great laptop, i have the 17r3 970m Overclocked to 1400mhz (unlocked vbios). I also have a gtx 1080 ftw in my graphics amplifier and it does NOT like to go above 60% gpu usage at 1080p. Resolutions above 1080p will ofcourse make it go higher. At 4k its locked at 99% gpu usage. You should run afterburner with rivatuner statistics on your videos as it will show much more information like cpu temps and usage ect.
Western Gents United I just love your channel it's very good to watch. Your channel is my 2nd favourite channel after DAVE 2D on TH-cam. And I love your voice.

@@TallyHoTech Just bought one new for an absolute steal. Should be here Monday, the vid really helped with the decision. Cheers!
Great video once again. That monster can game!
Cheers T
your channel is destined for greater things, keep it up
+Ray McCarthy Cheers mate. Have a good day.
Just a heads up, when you show the GTAV framerates, the pink box says BF1.
+PiggyMcCult Cheers mate. Copy a paste :-(
My friend is getting this lappy in 2 months.
Am jealous.
I hope he is a good friend and lets you have a go.
1000 cad for 2nd hand is worthy to buy ..in 2020?

Nice video dude...i order one with 7700hq and FHD ..but I'm very afraid about temp and bottleneck with FHD ...what do you mean?
ok THX for answer...last question: what about a warranty if i change RAM and SSD
Can you give your honest opinion about the difference Between the Aw17 120hz Tn vs GL502vs 120hz ips? Thanks in advance
Is this the same one that you recommend in your description? Because the one in the description says it's only 1080p
Btw, subbed
+Betelgeuse Romanèe-Conti Thanks for subbing mate. The review version was different. I will update the links, they have a new display option now
Western Gents United is that the only difference?
Do you record your hand gestures next to the Laptop and then talk over them?
+Martin Dirlinger No, that's footage from the review in this case
So what do you think of the new xps 13 2 in 1. I don't think I see any videos you have done on these?
+Patrick DuChene I will have one in soon enough. Looks good.
Wonderful!

That’s acceptable I face good. Worry when it gets over 90c
is it worth it in 2022 i was going to buy it for 600

Mr X thank you for the response. Very informative, I’ll look into it before I order the laptop. Thanks again
hey western gents is the alienware 17 r4 i7 6820hk worth it or should i just get a i7 7700hq model like are the skylake models cooler or do they overheat
+Aztec Wolf If you get a deal on the 6820 model get that if not get the new one. There is not much difference in the thermals
fyi the title should say "Alienware 17 R4" instead of "Alienware 14 R4".
Yer, thats the one
Is your rig overclocked at all?
Nope just stock mate
Is this the best gaming laptop to buy for 2017?
It will be hard to beat.
Ok Enmity maybe you can compare it to the acer predator 17, with the same price you'll get a better ssd, but thats not gonna do so much difference. Wait But I saw the same model but with gtx 1060
How's the fan noise?
+TheAceReviews You can hear it in the video but fairly average for a gaming laptop. Certainly not as loud as the Razer.
You have your steam key-code at the bottom of this video, not sure if that's redeemable or not but just a heads up.
+Ernie Varhola (twibmassa) Yer thanks for that. Let's see what happens.
quick question mate ;-) Which HDD/SDD do you have in this unit?
Only 360p as the highest resolution..! Wtf?
Give it time to process :)
Some alienware users report that the cpu reaches almost 95 degrees c, do you have this issue?
+Baris Eray Nah mate. 91C it was hottest and it was over 30C in the room.
Baris Eray That's because some of them configured a 15" with a 1070 or a 13" with a 1070. Just so you know 1060,1070 and 1080 are desktop card, so it was difficult for the laptop to cool the GPU since it was meant for a desktop.
Baris Eray Well no matter what laptop you get, it's always a good idea to repaste.
Why is the fan so loud ?
Under load all gaming Laptops are loud
Western Gents United so how to fix the issue ?
30 degrees c is 86 Fahrenheit. 100 Fahrenheit is waaaay hotter.
+Nevets Over 30 champ. I can't tell the difference from 35 to 45 it's just friggin hot
XPS 15 is still better for mobility. But I still prefer the Razer Blade as it is in the mix of mobility and power c;
+AverageFPS Razer is cool no doubt
You should do a review of the Early 2017 Blade with a 4K Screen and Kaby Lake, just released on their website. Would be awesome! :D
so they updated the new new razer blade lol
O meu tá congelando a tela
Woooof

Well, with a 1080 why would you be running games at 1080P ?
Johnny Papas Just to see how the cpu bottlenecks it.
+Mike Yes this thanks for the info. I will run Riva next time
There is an option to get the 6820hk or 7820hk if you want it. My daily OC on my 6820hk is 3.6ghz.
Jesse Brooks Well the 6700hq boosts up to 3.5 ghz. Have you done your own OC?
👏👏👍👍👍
WOOF!
