Literally the second scene shows Luca herding fish like they were sheep. You have the underwater hierarchy established there immediately. So no, merpeople and fish are not on the same level, although they are possibly genetically related (like humans and pigs, or humans and cows)

it's like saying fish commit genocide towards each other just bc they eat different species of fish.. which that's not even the definition of genocide, and even if it was...??

I actually like that the Dad has no tragic backstory for his arm. In fact, now that I think about it, he’s actually a juxtaposition for the boys, Alberto specifically. Alberto doesn’t believe that he and Luca can live among the humans, however, Giulia’s dad “came into this world” with a disability of his own, and he still gets by without it, so why can’t Luca and Alberto?

You can’t imagine my excitement and happiness at the fact that Honest Trailers doesn’t hate Luca 😍
The thing that was bothering me was the fact that they have to be dry to turn human, but they literally jumped out the ocean which would mean their clothes would still be wet. Their body would still be fish people.
I didn't go down that rabbit hole when I watched H20:Just Add Water back in 2007 when I was a kid, and I will not do so now.
I'm afraid my brain would melt trying to figure that one out XD
And then there would be other times when being out of the water partially wouldn’t change anything and sometimes the transitions happened at different speeds and- this is the part where I stop and remind myself it’s a kids movie
I actually kinda like that! Every other show uses that up so much, and while Luca does use it occasionally, they don't use it so much that it's boring! They aren't constantly panicking about getting dry (though they do sometimes, which would be realistic), so the movie can get on with whatever else it needs to do.
Yeah, they stretched all that a bit thin imo. But I just tried not to think too much about it 😛

Luca was so fluffy and enjoyable like a grandma's hug! I actually liked that they didn't over complicate the plot with unnecessary lores, it is a simple movie about those unforgettable friendships you develop growing up.
I kinda thought it's theme was anti- prejudiisim That's what I got from it.

It’s honestly one of my favorite movies at the moment. It’s the perfect slice of life, summertime feel good comfort movie with no crazy plot or high risks. It’s just three kids wanted to win a race.

I'm pretty sure this was also written by a hayao Miyazaki fan. This just feels like the next inclination of ponyo. Besides that, this actually does seem like something hayao Miyazaki would have made, down to even the style, if it wasn't cgi. The very round features is very much a 1980s manga / anime aesthetic, and most of the higher Miyazaki films that we love are from the 80s

Well when I was watching this movie I was pretty sure it was a metaphor for the difficulty of coming out of the closest and the "seapeople thing" was more for softing the subject. I got the feeling then luka and alberto have something more together

Why is no one going to mention that Ercole was perfectly okay with murdering two children
Well he was okay with taking part in a contest meant only for children and was over the age and has no problem with bullying said children.
He was also willing to murder sea monsters just to get some prize money, the dude is just a greedy ego driven jackass
Mr Critical He was willing to hurt them before he knew they were sea monsters, ambushing them at night to beat them up. Sometimes humans are more monstrous than the monsters.
They turned him from a typical bully character to a cold blood murderer so quickly
margareth michelina It wasn’t the race scene that he changed, the alley scene showed him willing to beat up Alberto just for being an out of town weirdo, and didn’t like that Luca insulted him in front of the other race entrants earlier in the film.
2:27 I honestly like that he was born with only one full arm. I've met multiple people that were born with only one arm, and I feel like it's just...I don't know, good to see that in a movie

I just got Disney plus for the Bad Batch
While the fish may all be sapient in _The Little Mermaid,_ it's not like that in _Luca._ They eat fish too! In the beginning scenes, Luca was an underwater shepherd, and those fish didn't have any fuzzy wool; they were destined to be eaten.
Yes. The fish behave no different than, say, cows, but many humans still eat cows.
So there was a dark, dark secret there all along...

One thing nobody mentions is what a great job they did (in my opinion) capturing that authentic Italian mannerisms and the essence of how they speak, move their bodies, their gestures, etc etc. That is so hard to do in animation! I'm not Italian myself but based on the Italian people I know and the Italian (live-action) movies I've seen, I was really impressed with how they managed to portray that ethnic human essence in an animated feature! Those things are so subtle, I've never seen an animated film capture things like this before. Normally they all look the same - the characters move and behave the same in every movie, regardless of country, nationality, etc. Not in Luca. I am truly truly astounded! 😲👏👏👏

I like that to show they are in Italy they don't just add a "ciao" or any other Italian word every once in a while, they actually say some phrases completely in Italian.

I am so happy they did this movie right. They nailed the ending and without shoehorning in a last minute romance motivation. Disney and Pixar are moving in the right direction when it comes to kids movies.

The weirdest thing is actually what a dumb move it was. My husband actually pointed out how lucky they were for not finding Luca. How exactly was it the biggest letdown? It's one of the few third films in a trilogy that offers a perfect conclusion to the franchise while also telling its own story. How many third films do that besides Return of the King in Lord of the Rings?

XD I feel so called out by this! I really only subscribed to Disney+ because of the Loki show and everything else I now watch there is just a nice extra.
That breakdown the voice guy had during the coco montage just proves we need an honest trailer for coco more than we need normal lives.
I remember when this channel did older movies that everyone's probably seen, but now they're getting movies still steaming hot from the trending list. Lol
But THANK YOU for pointing out the landscape compared to the characters. It's never a problem to watch a long sequence of cartoony character dialogue then cut to the most amazing views I've seen in a while!

In the prequel, a school of fish will maul off that guy's arm and kill the bully's family, under the command of that lady, because she and the fish are part of the mob. I adored this movie! It perfectly encapsulated the pure, simple joy that is childhood summers and the beauty of Italy with a beautiful relationship that had me sobbing at the end. It was exactly what I wanted.
So, one of the ‘fishy’ boy got literally thrown ‘out’ in the open revealing his true self without his intention while the other ‘fishy’ boy got panicked and point his finger at him ‘pretending to be not fishy’ in order for him to be accepted by ‘not fishy people’….and at the end, the boy finally is ‘out’ in the open showing what he truly is proudly and 2 village old ladies ‘come out of veil’ revealing they have been indeed ‘fishy’ too?
I think Luca is indeed kid version ot Call Me By Your Name and I loved it.

Nailed it. Daughter got me to watch this with absolutely no idea what it was about and loved it. Simple but effective film without too much preaching. Also explained why she had been going on about Vespas for the past few weeks!

Italian guy here... you did well, because the English version leans too much on the "fake Italian accent that all Americans think we have and speak with".... even if 1/2 of the cast is the same for both versions .... (I've watched both.... and usually prefer the original,since the actors get picked for a reason....but this time, Italian dub ftw!)
