Martinique is by far the rudest cruise port we've ever been to in over 20 cruises. The cab drivers at the port as well as the shopkeepers in town need some charm school training! If we ever find ourselves on a cruise ship that calls on this port we'll be enjoying the ship for the day.

    • @jehebardar2720

Agree, was a horrible experience for our little group, one of which spoke French but that didn't help much, they told us right to our face that we were not wanted on their island. We left immediately with our money we didn't spend there!

St Petersburg for me. Stone faced port immigration authorities, they don’t smile, barely acknowledge you while they stamp your passport. The place is drab and uninviting. We were lined up waiting to get into the Hermitage museum and a vendor was trying to sell his Russian dolls. A guy in the queue showed interest in them so the vendor spreads out a blanket and takes all these dolls apart and lays them out. The guy didn’t buy them and the vendor got quite nasty with him. Didn’t help that he had a terribly scarred face and looked quite scary. There were a lot of people milling around who did not look like they belonged there. Our table companion from the ship had his wallet stolen in the museum. The cultural attractions in St Petersburg are wasted there, imho.

On my return to the ship in St. Petersburg, I was for some reason pulled aside they, recognize I was retired military, and pulled me aside for an hour, questioning me and having me complete paperwork and photos of all my IDs, it was pretty scary! Despite the beauty of the Hermitage and St. Petersburg, We have no need to go back! It felt safe once we cleared Russian territorial waters.

St Petersburg for me, too. I took excursions with a private company and they were fantastic. There were only 18 of us and our guide and driver spoke fluent English, were very knowledgeable and fun to be around. The port authorities were as described in the previous post - unsmiling, unfriendly and contemptuous.

I completely agree. They walk next to you, chase you down continuously trying to sell you anything. They do not take a NO for an answer. What saved my husband and I is the fact that I’m a Spanish speaker and in a very stern voice and face I asked them to stop. Also, I let them know how annoying and disrespectful they were. It's so sad because Cartagena is a beautiful city. It reminds me a lot of where I was born and grew up, Puerto Rico.

💔 St. Kitts. In the 80’s it was so laid back, people just happy to see you. “Don’t Stop the Carnival”. We stayed at a guest house on Nevis, near Pinneys beach & the owner would come get us when the Fishermen brought her fish, she pan fried it for dinner. So sad those days are lost.

I’ve only cruised once and Jamaica was the stop that terrified me and hooked me. Where I lived, people kept about 3 feet between strangers. And when you tell a vendor no, they find someone else.
Coming out of the waterfalls all I remember is faces with trinkets in my face. I also got to see the tin roof that covered what I would call a handball court where the kids in primary school had their classes. I got offered marijuana for the first time in my life! 😂

Nassau is the worse! The people in the large straw market are relentless . One woman walked right up on me and my grandkids and put handmade bracelets on us, telling us they are gifts. After tying them in a very strong knot, she got into my daughter's face and demanded $15 for each 25¢ bracelet. They kept closing up and I started yelling for police . While friendly, Singapore is very strict about letting people in. This is because many ferry boats arrive at the same port facility, and people try to sneak in.
All the oil from the UAE is shipped out of Fujairah, so security is tight. You have to show ID twice when leaving the ship and twice when returning to the ship. The people are friendly.

I was on a land cruise back in the mid 90's with American Express to Italy and France. Our tour guide warned us repeatedly about getting ripped off in Italy, but no one in the tour group got ripped off. In France we had 3 instances; two on the subway and one in an elevator! A girl in our group had a fanny pack on, and the robbers were so stealth, they unzipped her pouch that was on her stomach, took everything out, including all her cash and passport and got off on the 2nd floor, which we thought was weird as the lobby was on the 1st floor. The poor girl didn't feel a thing.
We also ran into a lot of attitude in Paris, even if we attempted to speak to the locals in French to ask directions. Not friendly at all.

For me, Venice, Italy - I sailed out of Venice in 2019 before they banned cruise ships and visited last year before I sailed out of another Italian port. There is no where to sit and rest your feet unless you are dinning in a restaurant. If you try to sit anywhere, security will tell you to get up. I made the mistake of booking an evening food tour so I had to limit how much food I ate beforehand so I can be hungry for the food tour so I was pretty much on my feet the entire day (and I have feet issues). It's overcrowded so I understand why they would have issues with day trippers and now they are charging day trippers to enter (not sure how much though). I don't think I'll go back.
I have been to both Juneau and St. Kitts and had great experiences at both .... St Kitts (2023), I had a booked excursion and only brief down time so I didn't encounter any pushiness. Juneau (2018) was my favorite Alaskan port and I had considerable down time and visited a few eateries and shops and found the people to be friendly (this was pre-pandemic so things could have changed).
From what I've heard, I am reluctant to visit Nassau Bahamas and ports in Jamaica due to the aggressiveness of the sales people, crime and scams others have encountered. I have never been to Bahamas or Jamaica and not sure if I ever want to visit (exception private cruise island in Jamaica)

I agree with you about Jamaica. It was one of our favorite places back in the 70s and we spent a good amount of time at various places on Jamaica. Love the coffee Jamaican blue Mountain coffee wonderful at that time. The people were wonderful. Everybody had their problems, but they didn’t seem to want to take it out on you all of a sudden somewhere back in the 80s. It began to change. The people seemed angry. They seem more hostile. They seem as though they had problems that they weren’t willing to deal with themselves, but they felt they could blame someone else for them Went back again and again and again, and then the 90s we would stay at wonderful places like the Suchi and we were loyal and then at one point physical illness caused me to gain a lot of weight and we were walking through the streets of Kingston I was humiliated fat, white fat man Terrible terrible things which I never expected to hear from the people that I never ever ever said anything negative about so count me as one will never go back to Jamaica and anyone who wants to go there you better saddle up and get ready for a very unpleasant experience unless you are extremely lucky

Great topic, thanks. The big question is, where does this anti cruise passenger persona place the industry? It's likely to change cruising everywhere, especially in the caribbean. This means more sea days, more fake cruise owned ports (that is a stretch), and too many more island amusument parks. Anyone other than first or second time cruisers are already up to their ears in the lack of exploration and cultural opportunities.

Thessaloniki was one of my unfriendly cruise ports. During a tour we had lunch at a hotel restaurant, they overbooked, and quite a few people had no place to seat, when people from another offered to shared their space they refused to clean the areas for people to seat. Felt it was a bit racially motivated. Most of the people that were not seated were African American, and Hispanics

Jamaica has been the worst port we have visited.
Like you, we met real good people that worked the excursions, but the a lot of vendors were rude. We had other people chased us down demanding money. Will not be going back, and if we get rerouted there due to weather as we have before, we will stay on the ship.

We have been really fortunate, still as pointed out in this video. Getting off the main track/places will in many cases give a bad experience. Unless you are with a local or local guide.
We have only seen one such bad experience, that was in Venice when my wife wanted to walk to the cruise ship and we took a very non-touristy route. Along the south shore line, we witnessed an elderly German couple being robbed. The robber failed and ended up running off after the couple both ran in opposite directions, and The robber didn’t know whom to go after.
    Thankfully no one harmed.

Then we stepped outside the port gates: men kept trying to get us to buy drugs or be a “guide” Very aggressive .We just turned round and went back inside the port gates!

Ketchikan Alaska. While waiting for a red light to change in order to cross the street there was a large white pickup waiting for the same light. When the light changed I started across the road but the pickup immediately turned right which made it driving directly at me. It got to me very quickly and I started backing up, pounding on the hood, and yelling as the driver continued on pushing me with his truck. When I stumbled and fell down on the road in front of the pickup he finally stopped but I really thought he was going to just continue on and run over me. Part of the town had "ambassadors" who made sure traffic was good and people only crossed in crosswalks, etc. I reported the incident to one of them who asked about the pickup and the driver and said she "thought" she might know who it was as both the vehicle and the driver matched the description of a local who was often outspoken in regard to his dislike of cruise passengers. This was by far the most unfriendly thing that I have experienced at a cruise port.

I found Jamaica very intimidating. Our cruise was forced to stay there for two days due to a tropical storm that canceled our Grand Cayman port. We were unprepared for excursions so we stayed at the port. The people were pushy and rude, and drug dealers were everywhere trying to sell their product, while cops were on the other corner watching and waiting to arrest any buyers. Awful place! Never got off the ship on two subsequent cruises to Jamaica.

I completely agree. They walk next to you, chase you down continuously trying you sell you anything. They do not take a NO for an answer. What saved my husband and I ie the fact that I'm a Spanish speaker and in a very stern voice and face I asked them to stop. Also, I let them know how annoying and disrespectful they were. It's so sad because Cartagena is a beautiful city. It reminds me a lot of where I was born and grew up, Puerto Rico.

Belize is definitely the scariest port I’ve ever been to. You absolutely must not go out of the cruise port area for your own safety. Jamaica has been very dangerous through the years, so we stopped getting off there. Any port in Mexico is a NO for us now. Hard No for Aruba. Nassau is such a busy tourist trap, so I really don’t desire to venture off the ship there anymore.

Jamaica, it is such a beautiful island but I either don't book ships that go there, or I don't get off the ship if it does. Pushy, and when I visited many (ok many) years ago you had to stop at a customs counter and some lady came with a wad of cash to buy jewelry and the customs team stole it. Of course, raising a ruckus is pointless cause it changes hands 10 x before anyone starts to investigate. So beautiful place, I see from the ship!

I’m going to have to agree with you on Belize City. We had a mixed reception as we took our tram tour. Some people were friendly and waved, others shouted not so nice things at us. One of the ferry workers was super nice when working for tips on the ferry, I l saw him later and asked him a question looking for the right tender and I was given the most tart, rude response. I thought he was nice. I was shocked. The port area was super crowded too just adding to the misery. They are supposedly working on a new port area location. Right now, it’s a one and done for me.

I've only been on 7 cruises so I haven't seen a lot of ports but, so far my least favorite is Cozumel, that's where the vendors were the most aggressive, I DO NOT go into shops where the vendors are trying to convince me to go in. I go into shops that DON'T push me to come in.
Personally for me, a cruise is more about the journey then the destination, I might get off the ship if I'm somewhere I've never been, but if I've been there before and experienced pushy vendors, I'll just stay on the ship and enjoy the added space when most get off.

We went to St. Croix in 2009, when Disney Cruise added them to their ports. They were very friendly at the dock area, but the sail excursion, which was run by Americans from the mainland, was sketchy. It wasn't run very well, and they asked everyone to be sure to give them the highest rating when asked by the cruise line. I don't think that Disney Cruise Line returned to St. Croix after that year. I had heard that crime there was a factor prior to 2009, so maybe it didn't get better after all? Not sure. No issues at other cruise ports. Juneau was our favorite port in 2011, but we did not eat in any restaurants there. We are returning there later this month. We'll see how it goes.
