So glad the missing teen was found. The family must be beyond relieved! Questions, though, about how this boy left the ship as an unaccompanied minor, remain.
When my grandson cruised with me I noticed that when his card was scanned to get off the ship at a port my photo appeared on the monitor next to his. I don't remember which cruise line.
My mother was from Rome Italy. My family sailed from NYC to Naples Italy in July of 1963 to visit my mother's family, on the Italian Lines Cristoforo Colombo. The crossing took 8 days. The weather was beautiful and the seas were calm. In October of that year we sailed Le Havre France to New York City on the SS United States. The crossing took 4 1/2 days, one day longer than the record breaking crossing. The seas were very rough in the north Atlantic ocean. The 99ship was heaving up and down like a runaway elevator for most of the crossing. Here are some actual facts about the SS United Sates, not Don's mostly erroneous information. The SS United States was not a 'cruise ship'. It was an ocean liner, built to go anywhere in the world in any conditions. I guarantee you that no modern cruise ship would have been in the north Atlantic at that time of year in the conditions we were in when I made the crossing, let alone at the speed we were traveling. Today's cruise passengers would never tolerate such conditions such a sea state. Nor could modern cruise ships sail at such a speed in those conditions safely. The SS United States was 990' long and 53,000 gross tons. The ship could carry 1928 passengers and 1,044 crew. The top speed during sea trials was 38.32 knots (44 mph). The ship normally cruised at 30 knots (35 mph) and the top speed was claimed to be 43 knots (49 mph). Due to it's capability to be a troop ship the top speed was classified information. While a beautiful and fast ship the SS United states was not luxurious. It was functional. The US government paid about half of the cost for the construction ship. In the event of another large scale war the plan was to convert the SS United States into a troop ship which was one of the main reasons for its high speed. Because of the danger of sailing in wartime fire on the ship was a big concern. So the only wood on the SS United States was the grand piano in the ballroom and the butcher block in the galley. The rest of the ship was constructed of steel, aluminum and other non-flammable materials. There were some decorations but they were minimal. The tourist class dining room was ordinary, the first class dining room was a little nicer. There were no other dining options. The were tourist and first class bars/lounges, a small ballroom and a movie theater. There was a small indoor pool on the ship. Those things and bingo were the extent of the entertainment on board. The SS United States started regular transatlantic service in 1952. Regular transatlantic airline passenger service started shortly after the end of WWII in 1945. Propeller planes took up to 15 hours to make the trip. The first passenger jet service started in 1958. The SS United States made it's last transatlantic sailing in 1968. By then jet service was much faster and cheaper and the demand for passenger ocean liner travel was on the decline. It will take 1os of millions of dollars to keep the SS United States in any kind of reasonable condition. The entire interior has been completely stripped. Some things are in museums, some things were sold, the rest were thrown out. Who is going to pay for that? Even to preserve and maintain the empty hulk would cost a huge some of money. If the ship would ever sail again it would cost hundreds of millions to make it ready. Some years ago a group was going to buy the ship and renovate it to once again carry passengers. However their plan fell through and it's just as well. In order to carry more passengers their planned alterations to the ship would have ruined her beautiful and graceful lines. It is a terrible shame that a once proud ship has been rusting away for years. It still holds the Blue Ribband for the fastest passenger ship crossing from the US to Europe. The sad reality is that there is no reasonably economical way to restore the ship in any meaningful way. The best thing to do is scrap the once beautiful and proud iconic and historic ship rather than let it rot away tied to a pier until it sinks. I was fortunate enough to sail on the ship and I have wonderful memories of sailing back to the US from Europe is spite of the rough crossing. It breaks my heart to see the ship in it's current condition.
Thank you for this beautiful comment. Perhaps someone should put together a book with people’s memories of the United States to serve as its memorial. I live in Newport News, Virginia, close to The Mariner’s Museum (what i think is the largest museum devoted to ships in North America). It has a huge room full of models of great ocean liners (including the United States) and warships. Their big project is restoring the Monitor from the Civil War. I know they have a model of the United States and it would be a dream to see it restored and moored in the James River on the museum grounds.
@@birbluv9595 You're welcome and thank you for the nice comment. I was 8 years old in 1963 and making the trip to Europe and back on a ship left a lasting impression on my young mind. It made me realize that the world was a big place and instilled a love of travel in me that never went away. I made 2 more trips to Italy via airplane before I graduated from high school. I was in the Army for 8 years and served in Germany, Japan, and the US. After my Army service I worked in Korea and Germany as a civilian for the Army. In 2006 while in Germany I met a Polish woman. We got married and I left government service and moved to Poland where I currently live. I've spent 32 of my 68 years of life living in foreign countries. It all started with that trip to Europe in 1963. I have a degenerative neuro-muscular disease and I can't travel anymore. I'm glad I got to see a good part of the world while I could. Now I do all of my traveling via the internet.
I’m so glad that young man was found I guessed and was hoping he’d be with somebody from the gaming community maybe a little bit older than him, but not mature enough to realise that he was 14 and needed to stay with his family, or he’d lied about his age and they believed him. At least it looks like nothing bad has happened to him and he was genuinely meeting online friends, that were genuine friends and not bad people, lucky though really!
It's a blessing that young man was found and returned to his family. Hopefully they can raise enough to preserve that beautiful ship. We wish we could have cruised back then. That would have been great.
Preserving a giant ship is a giant sinkhole for money. Queen Mary is an example. The city spent close to a billion dollars over the last 50 years. They tried multiple times to earn money from the ship but failed (even Disney tried but failed to make profit from QM). Cities seeing that huge expense won’t want to repeat the mistake by adoptingthe SS United States.
I’m so glad they found they teenage boy. It’s always sad when they scrap ships. My first cruise was on the carnival sensation. It was kind of a tacky ship but I cried a bit when I watched a video of it being beached for scrap since I had been on it and it was the first.
Yes and that’s still the correct term. Ocean liners are designed for rapidly crossing the ocean. They don’t have many extras. A room. Pool. And that’s about it
Not sure of his age but their policy is 16 and older can debark without a parent or guardian. Under 16 a parent (or someone over the age of 25, unless they are married then 21 listed in a cabin or linked cabin) would have had to be scanned with them at that time to debark. I’ve had this multiple times with my teenagers and had to look up the policies.
Teenager has an arguement with Grandma and decides to leave the ship in an act of rebellion. German authorities had to find him which they did. I hope his parents put the blame where the blame belongs, on him.
Thank goodness the teenager back with family. Hmmm ban understand but it's the tourism that mostly supports the businesses. Glad to hear some things open up after hurricane.
Good news on the boy. Still they need to figure out how to not let this happen again. Interesting story about the Old US cruise ship. Hope they can save it. Not a lot of time. Thanks, Don.
...doesn't look like you've looked into it much. Aydin had arranged to meet an older teenager and perhaps others he had met online gaming. Police were able to triangulate his location due to his cell phone. German police are convinced there is no evidence that he was abducted or that any crime took place, although comments from family seem to still push this narrative. Of course, a boy missing 2.5 days presumably staying with another gamer or group of them raises even more questions we likely will never know the answers to.
Glad the kid was found safe, lots of questions need to be asked and answered on that subject! Governor of Alaska should do like the governor of Florida did in key west and keep that port open! Sad about the SS United States but when it went out of service and they let it rot they sealed its fate! Should have been turned into a hotel like the queen mary right away and used the money for upkeep!
Super glad the teenager was found and hopefully safe and sound. I am sure he is safe now but just question if the sound needs to be addressed. Being a teenager in today's world is not easy.
I for one was not fearful or worried about the lost passenger, only hoping for the best. Please replace worry and fear with hope ❤ Glad to be with you all😊thanks Don Angie #loveboatcruising
SS United States is an ocean liner that needs to be moved and preserved as a museum of history. The same way that they are preserving the Queen Mary 1 in Long Beach and restoring it, they should find a way to do that with the SS United States.
Queen Mary preservation is a disaster. The city has spent close to a billion dollars over the last 50 years. They tried multiple times to make money from the ship to offset the cost, but failed (even the Disney Company tried but failed to make profit from QM).
Cities seeing the huge expense the Queen Mary has incurred won’t want to repeat the mistake by adopting another ship like the SS United States. Preserving a giant ship is a giant sinkhole for money
On the United States: other option would be for US government to take it over and pay for renovations and have some city offer to host it as a tourist attraction. (hence city pays dock fees). Sinking the ship would cost a lot as the ship needs to be "cleaned" of any nefarious materials, chemicals, fuels etc. You can't just punch a few holes and let it go down.
I am happy the teen has been found. I guess if the limit in Juneau is only on Saturday and the 4th of July, it won't be so bad. Good nees that Cozemel didn't sustain too much damage. I hope they can resolve the issues with the SS United States.
Happy Aydin was found. Hope we learn what really happened. It will be so sad if passengers that go to Alaska aren’t allowed to visit Juneau!! Juneau is such a great town.
Did you see the protests in Barcelona where protestors were firing on visitors with ... water pistols? That has the opportunity to escalate. I don't see how these protests are targeting only cruisers, though.
Would like more cruises to no where in the Caribbean. Sailing by some attractive coasts. Do things right on board. Perhaps 1 beach stop at private island.
So glad the missing teen was found. The family must be beyond relieved! Questions, though, about how this boy left the ship as an unaccompanied minor, remain.
Agreed. Concerning for sure
Yes it should have alerted the crew member that he is a minor ??
When my grandson cruised with me I noticed that when his card was scanned to get off the ship at a port my photo appeared on the monitor next to his. I don't remember which cruise line.
Thank God the boy has been found safe. I hope the family is coping well with relief.
Thank God Aydin was found & reunited with his family!!!
What a relief they found this young man safe.
I sailed on the SS United States as a toddler in 1963. We sailed from New York to Southampton to join my Dad when he was stationed at Wiesbaden AFB.
I'm so happy Aydin was found safe and sound.
Great news I can’t even imagine what that family went through. Thankful for a good outcome!

Good to hear that he is safe and back with family.
Great to hear he is safe!!
A story with a happy ending
Hi Don I am so happy to hear he has been found.
Thank God he’s safe🙏🏻
So glad he was,found!!

Glad to hear the your man was found safe, and glad to hear the folks at Cozumel weren't hit as hard as it could have been.
Glad he was located safe. Tourists come in different directions. Pray for the recovering islands ⚓️

glad he was found. but why is a kid getting off the boat without adults with him?
Yep, that ship is so important to us that the majority didn't even know it existed until our was reported on
Good news about the teenager. I hope they can save this ship because history is being taken away but by bit. Thanks for the update.
Thank you Don, great news all around🎉
What great news that the young man was found and reunited with family.
Tourism in Alaska is a large part of their economy, the only way to Juneau is by air or sea; no road access. Will wait to see what they come up with.
Skip Juneau 100% for a year and wait for the meat election.
Thank goodness he was found safe and sound!! Happy ending!
I’m so glad they found they teenage boy. It’s always sad when they scrap ships. My first cruise was on the carnival sensation. It was kind of a tacky ship but I cried a bit when I watched a video of it being beached for scrap since I had been on it and it was the first.
There were no “cruise ships “ to my knowledge back then, there were “Ocean Liners.”
Just being picky 🤪
Yes and that’s still the correct term. Ocean liners are designed for rapidly crossing the ocean. They don’t have many extras. A room. Pool. And that’s about it
Glad he was found. There's a lot of questions here. Is it possible he was a mature looking teen and the ship thought he was older?
Thought underage are tagged and warning on seapass? Maybe not??

Great news that the boy is okay.
I sailed on the SS Norway with NCL twice. It was formerly the SS France, which broke transatlantic records, too.
Thank you God for returning this young man back safely to his family
I'm glad he was found safe & sound!! He should be disciplined as well as the cruise line for letting him leave the ship!!
So glad he his back with family
Banning or restricting cruise ships at weekends and holidays makes sense, to allow the locals to enjoy their time off work.
Thanks Don.
I'm happy the boy was found and he's safe. Thanks for the update!
Glad for good news
Lots of news in this video Don. Thank you for sharing and so happy to hear the missing teen was found.
Finally a good outcome!! So happy the young man is home safe and sound with his family ❤
Happy Sunday 🎉
Keep up the good work!
I'm glad the boy made it back to his family lesson learned!

This limit in Alaska is going to make the excursions prices go up!
I can't even imagine since they've already gone to incredible prices.
Prayers answered that the teen was found and is back with his family.
Hopefully they can save the ship and use it for museum/educational purposes.
Thank you for this update!

Good news day and things we can help day!!
What a relief! A nightmare that ended well.
USS United States should be made a museum or hotel. Like the Queen Mary on rhe west coast.
Hi Don, Thank God he is found.

Best news for the family
On the other channel he said a 19 year old boy lord him off the ship they were playing games on line. And was meeting up at the port
Would like more cruises to no where in the Caribbean. Sailing by some attractive coasts. Do things right on board. Perhaps 1 beach stop at private island.
Thanks Don
Don, do you recommend contributing to saving the ship?
Wow great news, now the mistery is how he managed to get off the ship alone being a minor.
Very glad the boy was found. I hope he learned a lesson, but probably not.
So glad he was found, but how did a minor get off the ship alone?
Glad he has been found safe
Don, remember these were cruiseliners not cruise ships. There is a difference
Am I right in saying it used to be called the Blue Ribbon, fastest ship across the Atlantic??
PTL the young man has been found.
