      @@saturn9488 The foot measurement actually is originally based on the length of a human foot. We use it here in the US and it’s impractical to say the least.

      Feet because we americans like to feel special, and football fields because every highschool has a football field, so referencing it helps everyone visualize it.

    This analysis is not exhaustive at all. Downforce actually works against a car jumping in the air due to drag. Instead you should have talked about engine power (that is way higher than the road car) and especially weight reduction and distribution. Don't forget that some pilots actually brake just before the jump to balance it when landing. Also metric system instead of imperial must be used for any scientific talk.

    " wings are used to keep the cars from running off the road". They're also used for the same reason said in Indycars. They help the corner faster by pushing it to the ground
    "High pressure air under the car creates lift" while yes it would, the air under the car is actually accelerated due to the venturi effect, and therefore is low pressure relative to the outside pressure, creating a suction effect and sucking the car to the ground.
    "In a corse with more jumps, they want a suspension that will bounce back immediately" actually the opposite. A course with many large jumps will require a softer suspension with slower rebound so the car doesn't bounce repeatedly after landing the jump.
    This video also completely lost the plot. You said you were gonna talk about how a rally car can jump entire football fields but didn't say anything about how WRC cars produce around 3 times the power of the road going variants of the car, which is the main factor as more speed means a longer jump.

    • @tiresomejarl8666

    • @ald3nt3
      @ald3nt3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly this!
      Also wings, like spoilers create most of their force by sucking air up with their lower side.
      The "pushing air up" part creates less force.
      This works similar, but opposid to airplane wings, where the majority of lift is created by the upper part of the wing, sucking the plane up.

    They can jump a football field on rough terrain simply because they are fast and super strong. The only similar part / component the WRC car shares in common with the commercial budget model is the Outer Shell - and that is for marketing purposes only. From the Magnesium wheels to the long travel suspension setup which is super rigid, and to the Tubular Frame Chassis as well as a completely different engine and 4wd drivetrain. These cars are basically Baja cars with a sedan clothing.

      Kent, with all the respect I have for the many things you do have correct, I do would like to correct you on your statement these rallycars are just dressed-up tubeframes like Trophy Trucks and Nascars. Yes, the cars of the Group-B days back in the 80's were exactly that, but these days that is not the case. In fact the chassis/body of a rallycar is actually from its production counterpart, in fact, they actually take a production car straight from the assembly line to rebuild it.
      How Its Made have released a video years ago in colab with M-Sport where they showed the process of building a rally car. So search on TH-cam for 'How Its Made Rallycars' and you will find it :)
      So where the entire shell of the rally I20, Yaris, Polo or DS3's are the same as your roadcar, they do install rollcages to increase the stiffnes of the body and survival chances of the crew inside (they also install batteries these days for the electric drivetrain).
      The wider fenders being indeed made from a carbon fiber or other composite material, the Rally spec engines as well as the other points you do mention correctly. ;)

      yeah, but in the right circumstances it does help, a rear wing will bring the back down, but also lift the front, wich makes it to kinda glide, making it to fly more, this isnt applied to these cars though

    #1 difference is suspension and tires lol

  • @Pheatan
    @Pheatan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    realistically this video isn't for the more experienced enthusiast but I do feel its important to mention a couple things. for the suspension one of the most crucial features is the travel, or how far the suspension can compress. the length of travel is crucial is it gives more time for the spring and shock to slow down the downward momentum of the car. for a simple explanation the impact the car takes is variable based on change in velocity over time.
    for a more nerdy explanation of dampers, so liquids are really hard to compress this means that ordinarily if you pushed that piston down like the video explained you would have absolutely no shock absorption. the piston however has small cut outs along the side that let some of the oil go past it as it compresses down, kind of like how an air mattress is completely stiff until you open the nozzle then you can push the air out. typical cars just have one set sized opening to get the compression the manufacture wants for their vehicle. but many aftermarket options (I really love BC Racing for value for money) have adjustable dampening where you can set how large of an opening the piston has, and some suspensions have multiple piston heads stacked on top within the same piston so that for the first section of travel its softer for everyday driving but harder when under more sustained strain like taking fast corners at a race track
