  • Rallying remains one of the most dangerous motorsports in the world. However, to help these brave drivers survive each high-risk race is a co-driver sitting shotgun reading off a list of directions called "pacenotes". It's because of these co-drivers telling them what's ahead that racers are able to drive full speed around blind corners and over sudden drops. And it's how rally drivers avoid getting into some major crashes.

      Dirt Rally is a fast game. But the handling are - compared to rbr - more than simple. If that would be the case in a real rally car, everybody would be able to drive a rally car fast after a couple of hours in training.

    ‘Oh, come on,’ he said. ‘I mean, ’50 5-left and stop 2-right half minus braking into K-right 90 maybe and absolute crest 500′. What the hell am I supposed to make of that when I’m flat out over a jump sideways at 90mph?’"

    0:45 Rally cars go around 130mph not 100mph.
    4:07 The number of the turn is nothing about the gear of the car. It is able the angle and speed you can take the turn. Lots of people mess this up.

Meanwhile, I remember first watching a clip of a rally team pair driving through a course and I instantly knew there was just no way my mind would be able to keep up with the constant stream of information and for SURE never be able to give out those instructions so reliably either. • @Phantom5611
      @Phantom5611 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Well this is just a video for the general public to understand so numbers = gears is simple enough to understand. Besides drivers like Colin McRae do use numbers as the gear he should be in for his pace notes so numbers = gear is not entirely wrong as different driver has different preference for their pace note. Although most drivers now use numbers as severity for the corner instead.

    • @deathtrap5556
      @deathtrap5556 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I play a lot of Dirt Rally 2 and while following it to the T isn't obviously what you're supposed to do but it definitely helps a lot to be in the gear that pacenote number is, especially for tracks that are unforgiving.

    • @alphaprawns
      @alphaprawns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's usually a decent indicator tbh, there's a reason why most pace note languages based the scale on 1-6 - not a coincident it matches the number of gears in most cars. It just isn't a hard and fast rule that corner number = gear number as the circumstances can differ a lot.

    @ 4:07 "... by calling out 5 Left, Nagle instructed Meeke to keep the car in 5th gear for a gradual left turn."
    Like mentioned earlier in the video, the number determines the severity of the turn, and not which gear the vehicle should be in.
    I think it was an error on the hosts part, but a 5 left could be taken at whatever gear the driver felt comfortable taking it at.

    • @rumblefish9
      @rumblefish9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its the severity of the corner and also the gear to take it. Like for example, a 1 is a slower first gear hairpin.
      Oddly enough, Loeb doesn't use the typical numbering for corners. He has them noted as specific degrees.
