- On this episode of Ultimate Barrier Testing, we will compare the performance of the 270 Win to the 30-06 on 4 different targets. Each target is worth 25 points (winner takes all), for a grand total of 100 points. Whichever cartridge ends up with the highest score will be the winner. Testing was setup at 50 yards. Steel is A529 grade 55 mild steel. 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Thanks for watching!

Everything with projectile calibers and casings has already been tried before. Everything has already been done before. The difference now, is younger generations that aren't familiar with firearms usage and cartridges due to corrupting of America's education system, are starting to learn things that have been around for a very long time.

Just goggled Geoff, I can hear what you mean 😊
For hunting, I've dropped most everything in North America with the 270 Win topped with the ancient 130gr Speer Grand Slam. Shoots flat. Penetrates deep.
I still want Grandpa's old hunting rifle, a Winchester Model 54 in 30-06. I'll never talk my uncle out of it. I used it to hunt my senior year in high school with ammo he hand loaded in the 1950s.
Speer Grand Slams have the BC of a bowling ball. They don't shoot flat.
@@jasonshults368 If you know your ballistics, and understand the limitations of the bullet's requirements to expand, That bullet is lethal to ~400 yards in a .270 win. At 300 yards, he might have to hold 6 inches higher than with the latest ~500 BC bullet. With so many ballistics calculator programs, and so much data out there, as long as you know your load, you can hit with it.
I always heard not to go after anything bigger than a deer with a 270.
@@vigilantobserver8389 Jack O'Connor hunted game all over the world with a .270 Win. His wife used a 7x57 Mauser. Neither of them ever felt undergunned on any non-dangerous African plains game or North American ungulates. .270 Win is solid Elk/ Moose medicine with the right bullets. 130grs for deer/ goats/ antelope, and 150grs for elk, moose and black bear.
Have you taken any of the big bears?
Decades ago when 270 and 30-06 were the typical choice for deer. The deciding factor was the environment. The 30-06 was, along with many other 30 calibers, was considered a "Bush Buster" because small branches and twigs wouldn't have much effect on the flight path. The 270 was preferred for open field caliber because of it's flat long distance projectory.
What's the typical choice now? Just wondering, as I still use the 270 for a couple decades

@@catch22fishing65 Definitely! For an epic round. 😁
Catch22, me also. I inherited my Grandfather's remmy 760 gamemaster in aught six. Love this thing but once I hit 55 years old it just beats the snot outta me. Soooo I tried an experiment. Replaced the stock with an AR style. Much lighter so I figgered that the recoil would be worse. Not. Felt recoil is less than a third. Follow ups are infinitely faster.
As an aught six buff I thought this is a good thing to pass on to others like me whom might be getting on in years and past the "love that recoil" stage. Im plus 60 now and still, STILL hunt the Idaho high ups for elk every year. Lighter rifle lets me walk longer and further but the hardly felt recoil is just the most wonderful thing ever!
Good hunting.
@@AbleMan.2178 I guess I'm lucky I broke my right collar bone when I was a kid it never healed right but it makes a perfect butt stock rest.
I was raised in a 30-06 shooting family, so I was bias for the longest time. Around 2005, I was offered a Browning Medallion in 270 in trade for I don't remember what. I figured I'd sell or trade it because it's a 270. I went to a local gun shop for some ammo. The owner put a 30-06 cartridge in one hand and a 270 in the other. He said close your eyes and tell me which is which....... I mounted a nice Leupold scope, and the rifle shot incredibly well. Two so-called friends made insulting low-ball offers on the rifle, so I kept it as a spare or guest rifle for hunts. My 270 reloads have harvested several deer and hogs over the years. Please remember deer are not 1/2" steel plates. My regular 30-06 is a Leupold scoped (1920) Springfield 1903 sporterized rifle.
I'm partial to the '06 because that's what I have. In reality there is very little difference at any ethical hunting distance. If the DoD had adopted the .270, it would be just as popular as the '06 is now.
ThT is my rifle as well it great and it has a story behind it makes it special for me.
I have seen a 30-06 go THROUGH a 12" tree when being hit dead center. I cannot speak for the 270.
Ok you killed a tree. Did you prepare it medium rare or well done. What's the point? Any deer or moose out to 300 or more yards with a well placed shot is going down with either cartridge.

There’s a reason the military uses sand bags…. 6” stops most projectiles. Maybe a 4” box would be more useful as a testing metric?
I've seen other people suggest using several cereal boxes, so you can measure total penetration.

Good test. I am a fan of 30-06 and 30-06 owner. Rem 700 ADL. Even had it not penetrated that last steel plate. I would still be a fan of 30-06. thanks for the show it was a good one Professor.
Hunting antelope with a with a diehard 30-06 Pennsylvania white tail hunter back in 1992 we had a similar test. Although he had taken more than 50 deer in his life time hunting in McKean county PA he could not hit a antelope with it a the distances we were presented with. On the last day of the hunt he finally got a nice pronghorn, when he borrowed my .270.
My Bergara 6.5 PRC is zeroed at 200 yards. It fires factory 130 grain terminal ascent at 3150. At 425 yards it has 9 inches of drop.
30-06 is just classic. great round. I have an old Remington 700 chambered in 270 though. Great gun. Ive never been disappointed in 270. Accurate as hell
Classic cartridge shoot out ! Love the good ol venerable .30-06 ! Still reigns the king of cartridges after almost 120 years !
I’ve recently found my way back to it with a new Winchester model 70 Featherweight. Love the 165 grain Nosler Partitions and Accubonds or 165 grain Swift Scirocco II . I’d like to see some comparisons between these bullets on steel etc …
That Winchester Model 70 Featherweight is a sweet shootin' iron. Had one in 7x57, Stolen in 2001. Still POed!
My step-grandfather was a WWII vet who fought in the Philippines. He hunted most every big game animal in North America with a .270. I can't say he killed his grizzly with one but most everything else, from black tail to elk and moose. Mountain sheep, bighorn, antelope, cougar, and black bear. His other favorite rifle was a 300 Savage.
Anyone remember Craig Boddington’s article back in the 90’s ? He pretty much summed it up as anything a .30 can do, a .27 or .28 can also do, just with a lot less recoil and a flatter trajectory.
So the original .270 load was a 130gr bullet at 3160fps. The ammo manufacturers received complaints about meat damage and had to lower it to 3000 fps. In recent years they’ve upped it a tad but it’s still lacking a 100fps or so (this matters a lot because that’s basically the difference between a 308 and a 30-06).
The .30-06 in this video is above factory averages and the .270 is right at factory averages (which is still lower than its initial power).
IMO I think the .270 is just the better caliber if loaded correctly. Shoots flatter, penetrates just as much if not more due to higher sectional density and has less recoil.
Not a bad test just give the 270 a fair shake. The Barnes LRX factory load is close to the original loading as you can get.
Did he post velocities of each round? Also, the .270 doesn't have a higher SD than the '06. Some bullets certainly do, but that all depends on the particular bullets compared.
He did in the video description. I will say though, that sectional density has no relation to the bullet type or construction (he used interlocks for each).
Sectional Density is essentially the weight of the projectile in relation to its largest width; in this case it is .277” and .308”.
I think you might be thinking of B.C. Which does take the design of the bullet into place.
Thanks for the comment, brother.
Need a therapy dog? Your beliefs on the 270 shattered? The test was definitive. Get over it
I already proved why it wasn’t definitive. You’re a [Redacted].
@@hunterjohnson5635 I know what SD and BC are. My point was that there are bullets for the .270 that have a higher SD than SOME bullets for the '06, but not all of them do. Depends on the bullet weights selected for each.
Banana doesn't do scientific testing. His tests are exactly what they are. If you want a more definitive test it's on you.
My Dad was a Marine and he said those penetrating rounds would punch steel plate like butter and just bounce around inside the tank or vehicle until they got tired. Devastating to anyone in there.
Bullets don’t bounce around contrary to fud lore
LOL fudd lore at its finest. The 06 is not going to and never did penetrate tank armor, and they surely wont bounce around vehicles. Same fudd theory that a .22lr will bounce around inside the body lol.
There's a reason why the 30-06 has been around since 1906 it works
Finally acquired a M1-Garand! Loving the 30-06 so far. Can’t really fire anything greater than 150 grain, but it still flies 2890 FPS.
Get yourself some Hornady M1 Garand Match ammo. My Springfield Armory M1 shot 4 rounds at 100 yards you can cover with a quarter! Click my screen name and you'll find a video of a friend shooting that M1 at 880 yards. All the particulars you'll find in the video description.
@@renaissanceman7145 I will do that. Thank you!
I still don't know why I find this so entertaining. Thanks for the vid!
Regardless I prefer the 270 because it has a bit lighter recoil, works fine (1moa from a $300 dollar rifle from Wally) at my limits of 300 yards. Cant complain. Weatherby Vanguard/Howa from 28 years ago, black nylon stock.
The .30-06 is based on the 7mm Mauser and was developed after the Spanish-American War. This was due to the shortcomings of the .30-40 (.30 caliber, 40 grains black powder equilavent [just like the .30-30] based on the "new smokeless powder") Krag-Jorgenson rifle. The first cartridge in 1903 used a round nose bullet which was changed to a spire point in 1906 for better ballistics. The designation .30-06 equates to .30 caliber of 1906 and was developed for the 1903 Springfield rifle.
All derivatives of the .30-06 are in truth developed from the 7mm Mauser. I have a "Spanish Mauser" from the late 1800's, a nice historical artifact.
My dad shot a 30-06 since he trained with one during the Korean War and bagged a Colorado elk with his private gun. I bought a brand new, in-the-box Winchester .270 at an Idaho pawn shop in 1986 and have taken elk, pronghorn (at 400+ yards), mule and whitetail deer with the rifle. Both are dependable and efficient big game rifles if one can hit their chosen target.
It is funny that I got the exact opposite results from 500 yds on 1/4 inch. The 30-06 would dent it and the 270 looked like I used a drill bit. Both were using Sierra GameKing soft point Spitzer Boat tail bullets.
Actually you can't go wrong with either round, both rounds have brought down many deer over the years. Grandpa definitely knew that they were both highly effective rounds.
That 100,000 is getting close get the helium ready lol ! I enjoy your videos sir keep going .
Glad to see you have abetter barrier in front of your shooting table.
The 30/06 is the most versatile round on the planet, and is proven on the battleground and the hunting field!
Both great rounds , the advantage to the 3.06 is you can load heavier lead. The .270 135&150 grain, the 3.06 load down or up to 185 grain . My .270 is my deer and hog rifle , my 3.06 is my larger game rifle , love them both .
Love it! You used my little granddaughter’s favorite word, scooch. Not a word I hear often but it’s gotta be cool since my little granddaughter uses it. I both liked and subscribed!! 👍🏼🙂
Here’s what’s meaningful, per any bullet weight the .270 will have a higher MOA wind constant and thus the bullet trajectory is ALWAYS less effected by wind and that means better shot placement is assured at mid to long range. Now, since shot placement is the most important thing about everything important to successful hunting, smart hunters will go with the .270 over the 30-06.
My 7mag tops both in everything but price per round
Definitely aces both in recoil. 😂
I'm a grandpa. I don't debate. I own several of both. And many others.
NONE of your tests have anything to do with performance on game. I never hunted wood blocks, concrete slabs or steel plates at ranges where I had to worry about bullets bouncing back.
That said...the most useful _hunting rifle/cartridge_ of the many dozens I own is a Savage Model 99/.300 Savage. 🤷♂
Savage 99 in 300 Savage was my Dad's favorite combo. Worked on everything from antelope to bears
@@donwyoming1936 Your father was a very smart man.
And many a hunter in the northern Arctic regions..the 300 Savage was considered “The Cartridge”! Using that Savage 99.

Lots of hype on this subject and has been for decades…doesn’t change the fact that people just need to learn to shoot accurately enough in real hunting scenarios meaning on big game.
I’ve seen dudes that were great shots..on the bench!! But also seen dudes miss reasonable shots because of buck fever or not knowing to use their sling in standing shot situations.
Missed the animal badly!!
In a local store, that sells ammo, the number of different loads for the 30-06 was the same or more than 270 and 308 put together. On a four sided display shelf one entire side was 30-06 and the other three sides were different loads for 30-30, 270, 308, and other center fire hunting rounds.
No idea why I wasn't subscribed. Double checked when you offered to partake in clown farts. That'll be hilarious!
My 270 lost, but I bought it because of a good deal, however, I won’t be hunting for steel plates, though it will kill virtually anything a 30-06 will. I did want a 30-06 though, so I’m defiantly not biased!
Cool vid - I was worried .270 would win for some reason. I live in Western Nevada now so .270 makes a bit more sense than .30-06, but I bought my '06 about 30 years ago when I lived in WI. Lots of ways to spend money on guns these days and lots of fun to shoot!
Would like to see the same test done using 150 gr projectiles in both cartridges.
instead of same bullet weights, id like to see comparison of similar ballistic co-efficient. The area of the bullet base is what the pressure of the burning pushes against, i wonder if there is a similar velocity if bullet weight/base diameter are similar....id think so, but can anyone fill me in on this??
My old worn out shoulder likes the 270 better.
The deer don't really care, they all in the freezer just the same 😊
first time visiting, i'm please by the outcome; i've got my dad's old 760 Rem in 30.06, it's killed elk in the past. it's not likely to kill another, at least not this generation; maybe in the next, 30.06 is a great caliber with a lot of variety available in load options.
The 30-06 has the advantage of being a military round so more, exotic, rounds are available. I’ve never used the 30-06 before but can personally say that the .270 in 130 grain has taken down ANY game that I have gone after. They are both rounds that deserve the respect.
The 270 made it through near the edge not because the metal can deform easier near the edge, but because much less of the energy was absorbed in bending the plate on impact. the sled 4.2 backing acted like the other cutting edge of a pair of shears. The witness marks of that effect is evident on the back of the 1/2" plate leaving a clear line on the edge side of the bullet exit hole.
I have a 1994 Remington Model 700 / 270 I wouldn't trade for anything in the world!!
Your video is playing as I type this, my Grampa wern't wrong often
I deer hunted with a Savage 270 for a long time using 150gr Remington CoreLokt rounds. It is a nasty deer round for sure. Never had one run more than 10 yards. Now I use a 243 with 100gr soft point that travels over 3000fps, reloads of course and they fly just as flat as a factory round.
Both great cartridges that can take down anything on this continent if needed.
Another way to settle the debate is to get both of them.
The penetrator on that AP round is tungsten carbide, some pretty hard stuff
30-06 - Will take any game in North America. Where it shines is Moose andd big bear. It shoots heavier bullets too and has very good energy with 180 grain bullets. You can also shoot 220 grains. Bullet selection is great as well. I preferred going down in grain for your average white tail, say 150 or 165.
270 win - It can still take any game in North America. Shot placement is a slightly more critical with the 270 as opposed to the 30-06 and type of bullet is also more important. Advantages of the 270 include less recoil, flatter trajectory of the bullets.
Both are legendary rounds & I have both.
For white tails I prefer a 25-06 for its low recoil. In factory loads I believe the 270 shoots flatter but with more recoil. Then, there's the argument that if you see a 10 point buck, you'll never feel any recoil. Speaking of recoil, you should never shoot a round that makes you flinch a lot.
Great debabtes in hunting camps go on.....243, 7mm08, 25-06, 270, 30-06, 7mm all serve a purpose. Each one is like art work imho.
The first shot from the 270 on the 1/2" should have counted as there was no deformation or bulging on the edge of the plate, the second round could have been loaded short at the factory.
I have brought home many a harvested deer with my 30-06 which is about 60 years old.
After all your videos, they should build tank armor out of cheap sand and give the tank operators duct tape for the holes. No wonder, we cannot defeat the dessert people.
-tries helium
-sounds like normal man
Today, the Grandpas make more sense than the kiddos...in every regard.
It would be nice to see a comparison between the 150 grain and the 220 grain bullets in the 30-06.
The nice thing about the 30-06 is its ability to launch a large variety of bullet weights, anything from a 100-grain Plinker to the 220-grain in a standard twist bore. Some tighter twists can stabilize up to a 250-grain bullet.
I wonder if the Remington 150gr 30-06 Core-lock (lead tip or poly tip) would show the same results. Very interesting video, never thought those results would happen, thank you.
Here in Europe and Scandinavia, we never use a 150 grain bullet in 30-06, it is usally 180 and up. If not it is a very modern bullet, then we use a 167 grain or something like that.
The same debate is a hundred years old the 06 vs the 7mm mauser . Nothing has changed .
I love my 30-06. My grandpa told me to get one and I got it.
Would love to see you do a 30 Super Carry vs 9mm vs 45 ACP on steel
Time for a new box o sand.
I have both and use them both regularly, love them both equally.
Please mark the hits on the backing steel with a sharpie
There is a reason the military uses sandbags around parapets.
Great video! Thanks for the comparison. Have you considered doing any comparisons at longer ranges?
You're a mean one....Mr Grinch..!
Just for funzies, you should add a crossbow or compound bow to the barrier testing. Arrows are rumored to do well against sand.
Don't feel the wind, or hear the wind.....PASS the wind!
The sand box test is so highly subjective. Maybe shoot through 6 inches of stacked drywall with 1/4 steel plate behind it. A 4x8 sheet is only $10 and easy to cut with razor knife.
As for myself my 30.06 has always done the job. But we do live in the United States, so I say get what you want. And if you want both, get them. When I was young I knew a man with 78 firearms.

I think what the 270 brings is a flatter trajectory than the 7.62 caliber. But I would not to be hir by either of those.
You can't go wrong with either one.
Would be cool to have some old steel jacketed rounds.
Found some old 30-30 steel jacket rounds. Think they were from the 1960's.
The second shot of .30-06 on the 1/2" steel looked like it dislodged the second .270 in the slow-mo. 😊

Not going to lie....looking forward to hearing that Helium dose!
It's a matter of a few fps faster with the 270 overall the mass and speed a 30-06 can deliver from 55 gr to 220 gr not many cartridges out there are this diverse. I own a 1903A3 and it drives tacks. It was my first large bore center fire I owned that was truly a deer rifle. I had a 30-30 but it hasn't seen light in decades. I shoot a .257 Roberts now days. I just love the round and the Ruger was my Uncle Bob's.
Good video as always may I suggest whenever you do your steel page paint them white. And when you shoot them with a caliber circle and Mark with the caliber is. And also put a dot on to give you a reference mark as an aiming point😊
If you are just shooting close range, there is little difference, but at long ranges like 500 m, the lighter rounds bleed off too much speed, and that means kess penetrating force.
30-06 may have more deop, but you can adjust your sights ore scope for that, you can't adjust for the loss in velocity, oand the ffects of gusting wind will also effect the accuracy of lighter rounds way more.
Same brass. 270 kicks harder but flies faster, straighter, and longer that the 30 cal bullet. 270 is Excellent on speed goats.
🎶 let’s turn it arooooound🎶
My dad had 06 ammo from WW2 with steel jacket bullets that would have made a 30 cal hole thru the wood, the steel plate and his large back stop behind the target. Hiding behind trees in the forest is not going to protect you from that bullet. Those first rounds fired in the video are expanding bullets for hunting. As for hunting, the 270 is a great choice for hunters. Its faster, flatter trajectory and the recoil is less than an 06. I have used both, like the 270 more.
