Yet I remember flying out of Stansted Airport In England and it too was a small regional "tin shed" airport, but I suspect that if you come back to Avalon in another 20 years you will be impressed how much It will change.

    Loving your videos. Your edits are super fun and vibrant and show a lot of personality.
    A fun fact for you... up until COVID-19 changed everything, the Sydney to Melbourne route was the world’s second busiest route for passengers and planes. To put the route into perspective, the top 2 routes in the US combined are still less than SYD-MEL. Over 9.3 million people fly between the capitals each year whereas the US’s number 1 (world’s 29th) is LAX-JFK which is under 4 million. It’s also the reason that it was one of the first routes in the world to go completely automated check-in (i.e. NFC tags and no staff check in) when Qantas pioneered a lot of the tech over 10 years ago. Jetstar of course is a Qantas low cost offshoot, and saves costs by using a much more manual process. But the price you got was great for the distance.

      I'm curious if $50/day included traveling expenses like train and air fares?

    • @lmaree200886
      @lmaree200886 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phildy65 Air fares? No air fares in Aus are cheap, all are around $100 at minimum with no checked luggage. Each city has different prices for their public transport. Melbourne has no train from the main airport (Tullamarine) to the CBD, you get the red SkyBus to Melbourne Central Southern Cross train station. But in Sydney the train line goes underground at the Domestic and International terminals but the price is higher ($20 AUD one way in or out) as the Airport line is privately owned independent of Sydney Trains which is Government owned.

    • @afpwebworks
      @afpwebworks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lmaree200886 A lot of the outrageous price for teh Sydney airport line is for getting on and off at the terminal buildings. The train has to pay the Airport a lot for using the airport station platforms. If you stay on the train and go on to other stops on the line, ones that have nothing to do with the airport - it's a lot cheaper.

    • @lmaree200886
      @lmaree200886 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@afpwebworksI was born in and I have lived in Sydney for over 30 years! I think I know what I'm talking about!
      Airport Link Company actually owns the amount of track between four stations and the stations/platforms themselves (Green Square, Mascot, Domestic and International terminals) not much more of the building is owned past the entry/exits. Two stations on the Airport tunnel line are owned by the NSW Government (Central and Wolli Creek). And you're not paying to enter the buildings above, you're paying to USE THE STATIONS only! It's kinda ridiculous and of course the passengers bare the high price to enter the station! Yes, you can just sit on the train to loop the Airport line for as long as you want but you have 2 hours to do so or your Opal card will book you the full adult fare from the last station you tapped on from!
      I lived in Sydney while that whole tunnel and Wolli Creek station itself was being built before the 2000 Olympics! Wolli Creek station and majority of the suburb itself never existed as it was swamp lands with a creek bed running to the ocean.

You guys don’t, so saying Mel-bin(or Mel bun like that guy said) would sound just like an awkward attempt at an Australian accent. • @swansbear

    The cheapest way to Tullamarine Airport is to catch a Craigieburn train to Broadmeadows then the 901 to Terminal 4. That is all covered by your Myki Card, so would be $4.40. The Skybus is fast, but its a rip-off for regular travellers.
    In Sydney DON'T catch the Airport Train. It is a privatised cash-cow. Catch the 400 bus from outside the International terminal & from outside Terminal 3 (Qantas) on the Domestic side in the direction of Bondi Junction. In about 10 minutes it will get to Mascot Suburban Station where you can simply catch the train into town without the surcharge. If the 400 bus says Rockdale you can take that too & change to go into the city. Payment can be with your credit or debit cards, so you don't need to buy Opal Cards.
    Hope this helps people. Don't get ripped off!

We have incredible natural diversity here, from the Gondwana like west coast of Tasmania, to the Great Dividing Range high country of Vic, SA and NSW, to the iron red earth of WA and NT, with Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and the remote mystical Bungle Bungles, WA, the wetlands of Kakadu the rainforests of the far north of Qld, the time capsule that is Kangaroo Island, SA. Then there is the wilder, remoter Ningaloo Reef of WA. So much uniqueness to see that is not the glass and steel every modern city on Earth. If you come here please,please, please at very least choose one experience that is not city based.

    Public transportation is cheap, it's privatised transportation that is expensive. The airport trains/busses in most cities are privatised, hence the huge expense.

    Why did u go to panania???

  • @inodesnet
    @inodesnet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason for the airport expense is straightforward. All transport is government owned/run (with some private operators competing). The airport line was a private venture built prior to Olympics and priced according for a profit. No competition and private run means happy shareholders rather than happy customers :(
    But it is very fast! From airport to city in 13 minutes is hard to replicate in many other large cities.
    Massive kudos for heading out into the suburbs too. Although Panania is a very interesting find that shows ingenuity.

      @@HappyHoppe at least it's not too far an exchange from the airport. Sydney's train is quite large, so it seems like the research did pay off. Your stay in Leichhardt (where you climbed out window) is a much nicer area. It's one of the Italian areas of Sydney (albeit significantly smaller than Melbourne's) and quite close to the light rail.
      Thank you again for your awesome insights. It's very refreshing to see cities I know well through fresh eyes. Hopefully you one day make it to Western Australia and the NT some time into the future. They're the untouched places of Australia.

      Not quite correct. Four stations on the Airport line are privately run. Only the two Airport stations charge the airport access fee. When it was built (for the 2000 Olympics), there was a deal with a private company to provide a part of the funding (about $200m) in return for income from operating the stations. Under that deal the state government actually takes 85% of those fees, so it's not quite the 'private gouging' most people think. The government gets full ownership of those stations back in 2030.
      The trains themselves are NSW Government. The fee is still cheap compared to parking fees at the airport (and anywhere in the centre of the city). So much so that (for one day return business trips) I use free rail station parking (Revesby, not far from Panania) and catch the train to the Airport as the cheapest option. One advantage of the airport access fee is that it stops kids with nothing to do using the airport as if it's a shopping mall, but even a $5 surcharge would do that.
      If you're in a group, using an Uber or cab would often be cheaper. Lots of locals from suburbs use pick-up mini-bus services to the airport. There is also the 400 bus which runs about every 20 to 30 minutes. It's a Government Service from Burwood to Bondi Junction (most suburban areas of Sydney are served by privately run buses, subsidised by government, but they look much the same and all use Opal Cards). It stops at Mascot train station (outside the airport) and lots of backpackers use it to dodge the airport access fee.

    First night in Sydney and your staying at Panania Pub, are you nuts. You would have been better staying at Ibis or one of the hostels in the city, if you were trying to save money. I was born in the next suburb and it is one of the skankiest parts of Sydney. I was trying to think of the equivalent in Colorado Springs and it does not have one, maybe a 1 star hotel at Deerfield Hills.

    Everyone who lives in Sydney: Panania? *pulls out Google Maps*. Oh, it's out past Punchbowl. Right. Middle of nowhere. You could probably get cheaper and better accommodation closer in the city, depending on timing. During Mardi Gras is not the time to get cheap accommodation in the city.
    Also, 'Mardi Gras' in Sydney is not what you'd think of in the US: it's the Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras.
