Reason Sydney Opera House isn't pure white is due to how blinding it would be in full sunshine. It'd be too glarey. Sorry your tour of Sydney was on an overcast day. Sydney is even more stunning under our deep blue skies. Glad you enjoyed yourselves though.

The opera house is not white as for glare. It would have caused all kinds of problems if it was white.

Remember guys, the Opera House was designed in the 60s and built late 60s early 70s, and it was the time that fashion forgot. So yes - beige was actually fashionable in the late 60s early 70s. The main thing about the Opera House though is not so much the beige, but it is an architectural and gravity-defying building masterpiece. The shape more than the colour. :-)

Letting such a tiny detail like the opera house being beige and not white affect your opinion of it is a little strange tbh. I mean I understand having an expectation but the colour of a building is a weird one to be caught up on.

I made a thing about it when I first saw it. You just expect it to be white. I thought there must have been a dust storm at some stage. I also made much of the tiles on the roof looking like a 1970's bathroom.

As a person who was born, grew up, and still lives in Sydney, it’s great to watch other people’s praise for your city to make you appreciate what you often take for granted. I have a favourite little beach in Sydney Harbour that is easily accessible by ferry and is usually deserted. You can lie there on the sand, take in the sun, and watch the boats go by. Simple pleasures in life are often the best...

I’m a Sydneysider born and bred now living in regional Victoria, I don’t miss Sydney cause of the crowds but the weather was more tolerable than where I am currently and everything was WAY more convenient to get to! I miss the Asian food markets. I am two hours train trip from Melbourne but I used to live in Southern Sydney past Wolli Creek and had a 20 minute trip to Circular Quay :( I miss it but I can not afford to live there anymore. Sorry that the Opera House was duller than normal, photos are always enhanced or taken when the weather is more optimum! Plus when we have bushfires the ash and smoke clings to the tiles :( I was last at the Opera House to see the band Evanescence for their Synthesis tour, the acoustics was awesome and I wasn’t even in the main amphitheater!

Captain James Cook was credited with finding the best way to prevent ‘Scurvy’, which was an ailment that afflicted sailors on long journeys. Because of his farming background (he worked on a farm as a boy) he knew that a healthy diet required a decent intake of vegetables and fruit and so he insisted that his sailors be fed with both foods, especially citrus fruits. This led to his crew suffering the least number of deaths from Scurvy. The British Navy adopted his dietary rules and because of the large amount of citrus fruits they consumed, American sailors began calling them; ‘Limeys’.
Cook was such an accomplished cartographer that his charts were still being used over a Century after he drew them. An astonishing feat, given the instruments he had at his disposal. His observation of the transit of Venus across the face of the Sun and other scientific observations, were great contributions to science and his charts and mapping of currents and Islands in the Pacific made him a respected seaman to sailors everywhere.

Looks like you had an overcast day :( needs some blue skies and blue water to make Syd harbour sparkle! My favourite part of Sydney is the old architecture on the old streets in The Rocks. I think you missed the best bits!
Also kangaroo when cooked just right tastes like beef. When it’s cooked poorly it takes like a chewy, meaty, game-y, not-very-nice cut of beef. So I think your street vendor must have done a great job :D

When the Opera house was built the color selection (background beige) and design of the white tile layout was selected to give a 3D feel (light and shadow) when the sun was at it's fullest on camera as it was to be a major icon/beacon to attract tourism to Sydney from around the world, and for the most part, it has done its job with nearly 11 million visitors per year. It's a shame you did not climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge and see it from the top because I believe it is the ideal location to view all the Harbour and Opera house and portrays the Opera House closer to what you see in pictures/photographs. Fun Fact: Jørn Utzon, the Danish architect who designed the Sydney Opera house had an argument with the bureaucrats over the cost and the interior fitout of the building, so he threw a tantrum, quit and left Australia in a huff. The outside of the building was pretty much complete at that point but it meant the government had to find someone else to supervise the fitout of the interior. Cook did not discover Australia. The first record of a European setting foot on Australian soil is Dirk Hartog in 1616.
Cook named the Hawaiian Islands the Sandwich Islands after the Earl of Sandwich.
The first Englishman set set foot in Australia was William Dampier in 1688. He was the first European to see the black swans
At the same time the French were exploring the south coast of Western Australia. Many West Australian landmarks have French names.

I have been to both Sydney and Melbourne and liked Melbourne much more as it is a more interesting city even considering the Opera House. We went over to the Sydney Zoo and it was the only time I have seen a live snake, even though I have been to the US twice. I covered at least half of your country during my two trips, including Colorado Springs and a brief time in Indiana travelling between Chicago and Detroit.

Yeah, I don't think the Opera House would be so iconic if it was white, because no-one could ever take a picture of it. I like the subtlety of the colour. A shame you didn't hit Sydney on one of the many blue sky days, where the Opera House really shines. But this is probably the first time I've heard it described as "dirty" and "disappointing" quite so many times. They probably won't let you back in the country. :)

We don't have 'Fall' in Australia. No trees lose their leaves in Autumn or Winter because all of Australia is 'NON DECIDUOUS' (ie.trees that don't loose their leaves except randomly). Many of the trees that you saw are INTRODUCED SPECIES ie .DECIDUOUS, often brought to remind people of 'home' (usually Britain etc). As for Captain James Cook. Read up on his 'transit of Venus' trip & how he found the Sandwich Islands, (Hawaii) and how he changed the known World. One of his main passenger friends was Charles Darwin who wrote 'The Origin of the Species', the basis of ALL life today! Even churches now agree with 'the theory of evolution', such as how YOU & I got here in this time in history, and why species with same existence strategies, such as kangaroos 'hop' and deer 'run' yet both eat grass. ALL either side of 'THE WALLACE LINE' where the Gondwanaland Land split into two types of existence methods, -> 1. all other continents are 'conventional' eg. dogs & cat & trees with leaves that fall, & 2. Australia & New Guinea where ALL ORIGINAL SPECIES are 'pouched marsupials' (eg. monotreans) AND ALL trees are related Eucalypt Species (ie. Gum Trees). ALL AFTER THE SINGLE MASSIVE GONDWANALAND Split into the Contents that drifted away, such as Africa, Europe, Asia, The Americas - North & South. WHILE Australia & New Guinea more or less Stayed Put, hence the different species.

letsseeif How could Darwin have sailed on the Endeavour or any of Cook’s ships? Cook died in 1779 and Darwin was born in 1809. Darwin’s ‘origin of the species’ voyage was made aboard the HMS Beagle in 1831.

Over the years it has gone that beige colour it could certainly do with a clean it was a lot more white in colour when it was first built. The statue of Queen Victoria wasn’t originally part of the building they found the statue in a barn in Ireland and bought it over much later and installed it.

Sunday’s in Australia are family day so that’s why they have reduced fares on public transport, most suburban pubs kids eat free on Sundays and lots of pubs and McDonald’s have free face painting and entertainment. Also a lot of local councils put on free festivals or entertainment in local parks on weekends. Australians really value family time and work life balance.

Yeah, I dont understand the hangup over the opera house colour. Perhaps you were looking for a Disney christmas wonderland type experience .it would be interesting to see where you are from because in the Sydney summer it would literally be blinding even to the point of air traffic hazard. I hope other tourists are looking a little deeper. Also, Sydney is a tiny part of the country .You didnt even realy look at Sydney. Like someone looking at New York statue of liberty and being disappointed about about the concrete colour and displacement and then connecting that to the disappointment of the city and country as a whole. If you ever go back to Australia, Get out and about and realy have a look. Then you will find your Disney fairy tale.

Note that when it says Cook "Discovered Australia" this is very much like when Columbus "discovered" America. People were already living here for 40-70,000 years and a lot of Australians would like that statue torn down because of how many Aboriginal people were wiped out after he came.

Really enjoyed your video but felt for you with the weather. Sydney is lucky to have nearly 300 sunny days a year and is known to have one of the bluest skies. It’s great as a photographer because it can pull blues in photos you can’t get elsewhere, but the extra white light that makes colours pop is also due to much higher UV. Sydney is the world’s skin cancer capital as a result.
Unfortunately you’re right - a cloudy day doesn’t do Sydney Opera House justice. But while it might seem underwhelming, it’s worth looking into it’s construction history. It was really ahead of its time.
Until recently, it was the world's busiest performing arts centre and has recently invited family members from the original architect (Jørn Utzon) to realise some of the interiors he had intended. The theatres are impressive, but the interiors are not done by the original architect (consider looking at the history; it’s a tragedy what occurred during development but they’re trying to make amends).

Perth says 'Hold my beer' when it comes to Sunny days and temperature - and don't get me started on it having a 'blue sky' (outside of the Mediterranean itself, and death valley California, it's one of the true Mediterranean climates. Adelaide is probably laughing as well). Sydney's weather is atrocious - not as bad as Melbourne's, but not exactly worth pointing out.

Coming from someone who has lived in Western Sydney my entire life, everything is better in Melbourne, except the beaches! And the "Sydney beaches" aren't the good ones. They're overpopulated and to be honest quite dirty. The best ones start about an hour north up the coast and run between the Central Coast and Newcastle. Just google Central Coast beaches, you'll see what I mean. Loving the videos so far, been binge watching them for a few hours now haha.

These guys are cool, but as with all tourists, including us Aussie's when we go overseas they get a lot wrong. But good on them and I think they were very respectful. However, as a person who grew up in Sydney I think it's really important to say that the Rocks is NOT a shopping centre. The Rocks are the most important part of Sydney's history. Sure there are shopping centres there now, but take a bit of time to investigate and you will see the history there.

The Opera house does indeed appear WHITE, but on sunny days, the overcast day you got didn’t do it justice. If the tiles were all white, it would have been overwhelming bright and indeed dangerous, especially for the shipping on the harbour. Sydney sunlight is especially bright so the designer to that into consideration.

Sorry about the weather. This year has been unusually grey and wet from the El Niño weather pattern that develops off the coast of South America with ocean currents affecting the Pacific Rim in a roughly seven year cycle.

A shame you didn't make it to Perth. NSW and QLD carry on about their beaches but the sands brown, and the ocean is hardly blue; not to mention their bad weather (Perth has a true Mediterranean climate). I say that as someone from WA but also as someone who went to high school and Uni in Melbourne and traveled the east coast extensively.
Sydney is only known because it's always mentioned in pop culture (similar to how people when asked about the US think of New York or Los Angeles) even though people from Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide find the place dirty and one of the last places to visit in AU.
