As a retired home economics teacher, I am impressed, Anne. Your friend, Ellen is amazing to fly from Germany to help you. What a good friend and so patient, too. A lined garment as your first project is quite the undertaking....way to go! Sewing is a life skill so seldom used anymore except for maybe quilting which is a popular art. Look forward to your next adventure! Thank you for sharing, Anne! Your outfit is lovely!

My grandparents were Tailors in the 40’s, 50’s 60’s. They learned on the old machines. Perfection would describe their skills. BTW-they met in deaf school. They made a fine living in a world that provided that possibility. Great video. Thank you.

They used the new sewing machine because they were experienced with it. A foot powered sewing machine is not slower but it is a completely different tool. I have my grandmothers singer machine and I can guarantee she could use that to make a dress just as fast as a person in their home using a new machine.
But learning to use a foot powered machine would have taken time so using the tool they knew made sense.

I was also born about 200 years too late. It's hard to find a place to fit in the current world, isn't it? It's all coming back, but a little too slowly.
All the best on your mental and emotional health journey as we both attempt to navigate modernity. 😆
    Great dress!
I've recently fixed two treadle sewing machines. They're such a joy and will outlast us.

It was such a pleasure to share a week with you Anne. Trading skills and teaching each other, eating new foods, milking the cow and goats, you've created a magical place on that farm of yours. And you were an excellent student, it's amazing how much of that dress and jacket you made yourself!!

Your dress is actually a style from the Regency period (Jane Austen's time), which was earlier than the Victorian period. The dress and spencer turned out so beautifully! Sewing some stays next would make the dress silhouette perfect, if you care about that. I wish you all the best as you continue your sewing journey!

An ambitious and beautifully completed first sewing project! It's cool to see a woman who is so competent at many things being tentative at a new skill, one that I am fairly competent in, because it makes me feel like I might, with some help, become first tentative and then more confident at other new skills that she already has. make sense? Maybe not, but it helps remind me that everyone starts as a beginner at some point.

That's a BIG first sewing project. Ruffles, proper lining, and TWO separate pieces?!?! Makes me glad that my "period" garb making was all single layers and mostly straight lines.
One more thing... Sleeves inside out and backwards, especially where the gores are concerned is not a dyslexia issue. It is most definitely a have-not-done-this-a-bazillion-times-before issue.

Great and patient teacher, Adam did a great job of putting this together, You've gotten more relaxed in presentation and this was probably great inspiration for others who want to learn how. Anne, like some many of the things you do, sewing has analogues all the way to the present- and new skills and materials that took them to here. You are achieving new heights because, any handicaps or distractions haven't got a chance vs. your resolve and patience! Watching you work on cloth made me think of my grandmother who was more tailor than seamstress- she made fine tailored women's suits and accessories as well as men's jackets of wool and other cloths. It's good to see you at home in yourself again- your distress when so many things seemed determined to disrupt you was a tough thing- glad it has got better!
PS; Now tackle your take on those "patented" hoodies you wear so often- how would you re imagine them?

Your lovely first piece dress is a great accomplishment. This brings back memories of being taught by my grandmother the rudiments on a machine very similar to your antique. I was told I needed to know these things to care for my clothes and uniforms. She did tailoring, even making men's suits and coats. That old treadle machine could really fly. If you really want to go further into period dress you should look at Bernadette Banner and her body of work. I guarantee you will be impressed.

I learned it strangely enough via TH-cam, and my family up here in the north. If there’s ever any way that I can help you, especially with hand carving, or bushcraft, I’m happy to do it. I’m still learning myself. I know that there are people like Dave Canterbury and Dan Wolwack(sp), but you were my first off grid channel and I absolutely love your “how I got here” tale. Hi Anne, I want to explain the life of my mother. She met my farther when she was a welder in the Portsmouth dockyard during the second world war . After getting married she started work in the “colour loft” where she learnt to make uniforms for the navy and she was in a group that got more money providing she worked harder. If you had an accident and got your finger court in the sowing machine you were docked a half penny because you marred the material with your blood, I don’t think a manager would get away with that nowadays. she was so good at looking at someone and being able to make clothes for them without a pattern and they fit like a glove. She was asked to make the small emblems to go on the King and Queens car because she was the best in the colour loft. When my farther was moved to Eaglescliffe she had to say behind until they could find someone who could take her place. She continued to make all my clothes. She made a duffel coat for me and when I was standing waiting to be let into the school other mothers kept coming up to me and asking where I had gotten my duffle coat, she ended up making them for my whole class. when I was seventeen and she made my first suit for my interview for a job within the MOD. I later got a suit made to measure and when she saw me in it she took me back to the tailor and complained about the way it was made, the tailor listened to what she had to say and then informed her that if they made clothes to that standard they would be out of a job within the week and the price he would have to charge would be through the roof. you remide me of her, the way you continue to learn and implement different things

I bake good pastries and I am good with a chainsaw and I climb trees and rig timber pretty well. I love to split wood with a six pound maul and I feed folks that break down on the road out here, up in the mountains of western North Carolina. I think folks try to make it as far as my driveway before they give up, just for good carrot cake and coffee while I fix their car and send them on their way....
