Who needs a Digitakt 2 anyway? Digitakt jam (and GAS suppression)

  • GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) has been peaking recently so we had to do something about it. No, this isn't the Digitakt 2 - it's the original Digitakt. And it's actually the third time we have one in the studio.
    We've had this bad boy for a week now and wanted to share our first standalone jam on it, as well as share some of our thoughts on how it compares against the Digitakt 2 and the Syntakt.
    The previous times we had it, we used it mainly as a companion for the Digitone and other pieces of gear. This time we've used in standalone instead, without other things connected to it. It worked surprisingly well.
    As always, can download the project files for the music played in the video from our Patreon community by visiting / sineway .
    We'd love to hear what you think about the music as well as the Digitakt! Please join us in the comments and share your thoughts.

      @sinewaymusic do you think its the Workflow that makes Elektron machines so popular?

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@darrellbarry3402 I'm absolutely certain that it's a big part of it. In the end, that's what you're paying for. No sampler will sound inherently different from another in this day and age. It's all about how it's designed to be interacted with. Ctrl+All, p-locks, the almost video game-like way button shortcuts work - it's all part of the experience that makes me faster on an Elektron device than anything else I've used. Note that just like a video game, that won't happen over night. It's after several hours and days of use where you start to realize how powerful this workflow is. And where you start to wish that other brands would copy more of Elektron's workflow. 😂

      @sinewaymusic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, I really appreciated this thoughtful and generous comment. You're right, in a way the DT2 made the Digitakt more accessible. I do feel like the GAS calmed down a bit when realizing what you can achieve with it, but I only need to look at a Digitakt 2 jam to feel like I want one anyway. Your latest one is a great example. 👌🔥

    • @raysubject
      @raysubject 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sinewaymusic also i think as pair to digitone or syntakt still OG DigiTakt makes a bit more sense becausee of similiar UI .. DT2 makes more sense to me like completely standalone device (untio Eleltron will not release DN2 and ST2)

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@raysubject Yeah that's the thing really, and we *definitely* prefer to make music in standalone with just one device. I can almost envy those that are comfortable with hooking gear together because that adds so much more flexibility. So that's why the DT2 is so compelling to us on paper, because the DT is probably a bit more of a companion to the Digitone as you say.

    Awesome jam! I only want these extra 4 sequencer pages for the syntakt, that would be an insane upgrade, right now i have to cure my GAS with doubling some patterns lol

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Olle, thanks for the feedback on the jam! Yeah, 8 pages would be nice on the Syntakt but at least for us it's rare that we can't work around it with setting the speed of a track to 1/2X, or to use p-locks for the few notes that need to be different in the other round of the 4 bars. But there's no doubt that this limitation does impact your sequencing to a degree. On the MPC, we definitely do more complex sequences from a pure note sheet perspective.

    •  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sinewaymusic yeah you can change the speed and play around with doubling some notes etc, but it would make much more sense to have 8 pages, since that would take less tinkering to get a single pattern playing a decent amount of loops with an added break in the end. Being able to choose any section of a pattern in song mode would actually solve this workaround even better :d

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @OlleNomm Yeah I agree, initially I was very annoyed with the 4-bar limit but I might have gotten so used to it that I don't think it bothers me as much anymore. But there's no denying that 8 bars would be better, and clearly Elektron agrees. 😊 Unfortunately I think that's one of the features that will never make their way down to the older devices due to memory needs.

  • @alecsbuga

    For quicker resampling just arm the sampler from the main screen and play the pads together.

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Right, but that then samples the full sound with all of its LFO and envelope settings. What we wanted was to just change the timbre of a sound already "designed" and sequenced. Hope that makes sense and I'm not missing something obvious. 😂

      @@sinewaymusic got it. I thought you meant just raw samples

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alecsbuga Ah, then we're on the same page. What I did essentially was to jump to an empty pattern with initialized (empty) sounds so that the raw samples would play on two separate trigs/tracks. I then hit Sample and played two trigs simultaneously to build a combined sample of about 2 seconds. Then jumped back to the main pattern where one of the original samples were used but with things like reverb, envelopes and other things added to it. I'm guessing this is the fastest way in the end.

      @@higherself7129 100% agreed, i think this jam helped us with some of the GAS but certainly not all of it. Personally I would like to have portamento and legato, those are pretty basic things for a synth nerd that I do miss on the OG Digitakt. But you can work around these omissions with parameter locks like we did in this jam so in the end it's not a deal breaker.

    I don't really undestand people say they play live and press play on Elektron machines

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I take that to mean that it plays itself and that it's just a playback of something you've programmed earlier. To a degree, that is true for almost all electronic music. The difference is in how much of it you pre-program and how much of it is done live. Our jams have the sequencing pre-programmed and then we perform track mutes and parameter changes live. If you imagine a spectrum between a pianist playing a grand piano live on stage on one end, and someone pressing play in a DAW on the other end, this is somewhere in the middle.
      This *is* a live recording of the performance you see on camera, with all the things I do with my hands being recorded into the audio stems. But we never wrote "play live", so I'm not sure where you read that?

  • @onaucc9899
    @onaucc9899 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Very nice song.
    I'm thinking about getting a Digitakt 2 (as my first Elektron device ever) and have to say that this jam really convices me, even if it's the "old" one. A lot of the other stuff i heard from other people sounded a bit to "amateurish" (not to be mean or anything, but i need to see if it's capable of the the sound-aesthetic i'm looking for) while this is a really nice, "up to the standards" sound design display.
    I just wish there was a Digitakt 2 that had Synth Engines or a Synakt 2 that was Stereo, Polyphonic and could play samples....
    Something like that not existing feels a little like arbitrary feature-exclusivity for god-knows-what reason :(

    • @sinewaymusic
      @sinewaymusic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for the feedback on the song, that means a lot!
      Regarding your wishes, I can honestly just say I'm with you 100%. I *love* the Elektron workflow, but I also *hate* that they made this arbitrary separation between sampling and synthesis when I really want both in my music. And I don't like to connect gear because that just becomes messy.
      So we have to choose: sampling or synthesis. In our case given how synth heavy our music is, we're leaning towards the Syntakt as it's just so much faster and easier to get a jam going. But with some upfront investment in cheating a library of tasteful synth sound presets, the Digitakt 2 could in theory become the favorite over time. 😊

      @@sinewaymusic For my use and my workflow, I don't need all the new features. Switching through the 8 pages, kits, navigating the machine menus makes me waste time sequencing. I may be crazy but I prefer to process the mono sound and widen/pan it in post production, everything sounds clearer. The old D1 and Octotrack converters are more pleasant, according to my tastes.
