Boy that brings back a memory . I was practicing on my RM 125 outside of Tulsa at Odyssey Trails Motocross track out by the Drag strip when some rider on a Honda just like that showed up. I was stylin' in my new JT gear and SCOTT boots and he was wearing a sweat shirt with the sleeves cut off ..jeans and some Hi Point boots. Well this kid proceeded to kick my ass all over that track....It was Guy Cooper ! I was a novice rider then but Guy was incredibly fast . I saw him race in several Oklahoma tracks and one at Lake Whitney Texas and in Orlando Florida . Guy was a wildman and real nice person.
I was lucky enough to get a mint 79 xr500 100% original got it last year off ebay was imported from california to the UK..now my pride and joy here in Scotland..
My buddy had a 250 the same, with the 23 inch front wheel, it was a good sturdy bike, but it was rough, and leaked oil from the head bolts and where the rev counter used to come out of the engine.
My uncle had the same bike but it was an XL the fender style looks the same. It had a speedometer on it I think it registered 115mph. It would definitely do over 90mph but couldn’t compete with my cr250 in a race. You could cruise around everywhere in 3rd gear
I might add that this xr500r has a 60 watt charging system on the lights that makes it easy for a Baja lighting kit from Baja designs so it would be worth the extra money to get a title for this and make it street legal they're a hoot to ride on the street and take down any trail you want and back on the street when your trail riding grab yourself a lunch at McDonald's and back into the trails this way we used to do it... The reason I like these over a dual sport bike is there about 100 pounds lighter weight these things only way about 260 lb and dirt bike magazine over the years put them up as trail bike of the year for more than two or three times.... Their last text I think was about a 1993 600 that's not much different than this one but they logged in over 10,000 mi off-road and never touched anything never even changed the fork oil or recharge the shock or nothing they're pretty tough it wouldn't take much to get this one running again really.... For anyone who knows how to tune a four-stroke single this is your bike... And he can still get those long travel rear shocks for this older one as they sell them aftermarket they're about 17 in from eye to eye and 16-in shocks from eye to eye work fine and are still available
Yep, I've had one and it was my first sizable 4 stroke. it took off like stink but didn't like to stop. Ran out of control off the track too many times and virtually gave it away. YUK!
@@StormSender You don't know much about old Honda 4 strokes compared to the short stroke race motors that they put out know do ya ? Have you ever had one ? I very much doubt it..
@@donbrashsux Of course not.... I was just saying that they run forever. I have a brand new short stroke fuel injected mx bike & even l know that my bike will blow up way before this old Honda..
Kaplan Jr got your ears on? Get your hands on as many XR speedometers that actually have a zero to 90 mph dial on them plus a treatment that's it there's no odometers but you got yourself a speedometer that Honda doesn't make anymore so get your hands on... they'll fit on all the XRS and the speedometer drive that fits on the front wheel... It comes in real handy when you're setting one up for the street as my last text that was stolen my vanity plate read XR600R.... THE SPEEDOMETER I'M TALKING ABOUT CAME STOCK ON THE 1984 XR500R... And the best camshaft I found for those better than a white brothers was the stock xr600 r camshaft in the following year when the 600 first came out they fit right in the last year they made the xr500r have more left and more duration than a white brothers for the xr500r ....
Hey guess, have a challenge for you. Take a Baja dirt runner 125 sold in Canadian Tire stores.i have one and it is solid engine wise front end ect.. rims are shit. Just want to see it get modded what ya say?

My dad has the '79 XR500 and XL500. They are a lot of fun, even compared to today's bikes.

Very cool. Guys this is my buddy's bike that passed this summer. I have ridden the bike. It scoots
😕 Bryan 🤎
Just sold my XL500R still got some dirt bikes, gotta love them ole bikes. 😎🇺🇸✌🏽

I bought it brand new in 1982 here in Germany! it was great and fun to ride in the dirt!
I had one of those when it was almost new , 3 xl 500, 1 xl600 now a xr650l. That is a good bike.
My buddy had a 250 the same, with the 23 inch front wheel, it was a good sturdy bike, but it was rough, and leaked oil from the head bolts and where the rev counter used to come out of the engine.
I have that exact year and model. Cant wait to get it running again.

I had the 1980 XR500 with the Mougen kit and Works performance suspension with 15-44 gearing , a cop wrote me a ticket for 105 mph .....nuff said !

Turning circle off a tank but lots oh fun ,
The tool bag is missing it was on the back behind the seat
That motor at 43 years old would still last longer than a new CRF450
Isn't that just some bullshit!

It’s missing the tool bag on rear fender. I loved my dads ‘79 XR 250.
