Hey, hey - let's talk about sensory BASES for a sensory bin. What's your GO TO sensory bin base?

A grandmother of one of my preschoolers donated buckwheat hulls to me several years ago and I've used that as a base in my apple orchard, pumpkin patch, and spring garden sensory bins as pretend "dirt" for many years. It is a natural, lightweight, odorless, airy material, and the kids love it! Because there is no nutritional value to the hulls, pests won't seek them out in your storage cupboard or sensory bin for a late night snack. So no worries there! It can be bought in bulk online as pillow filler, if folks are wondering where to get it. It's also very easy to vacuum up at the end of a fun and messy day of playing.

I love using the decorative cord as a base! I also like using the faux maple leaves as a base for a fall themed bin. I've cut up the DT rolls of decorative mesh for bigger bins and even cut up a DT grass skirt to use as a base for a summer themed bin. The decorative cord is by far my favorite since you can get it in tons of colors to go with any idea you have.

I agree with you! So nice!!! There are also the rose petals in the wedding section, those are great too although my store was out of stock.

Hi, just discovered you on YT, new subscriber here. Wonderful ideas I’ve never thought of using. Could you please make a video about different sensory bin themes, the manipulatives you would use with these bases, as well as how to use a sensory bin and what they are for. I’ve made one for my son but he seems to get bored quickly with them if it’s just scooping and pouring or hiding his figures in there. I really need some help incorporating these and making them fun and not repetitive with what he does with them, despite the theme changing. Thanks in advance :)

Also you mentioned about not shipping at the DT for certain things like pompoms due to the small quantity. Do you have a list of alternative stores you recommend?

Would not recommend the dollar store silly string. It has a strong smell that can be off putting for some
