I adopted an older Boston that had lived in a cage. She is now 16 and having issues with seeing, hearing, being able to jump and "bathroom". At my age, I have some of the same issues and believe hers are more age related than behavioral.

You are right about age being the main cause of these issues. Bostons tend to live 12-14 years and experience poor vision, hearing, and muscle/arthritis issues. My first Boston lived about 17 years and went through a lot. It was painful to watch her age - you need to really help them out at that age.

I believe in one of your videos you said they hate the cold. Mine loves it. She "Bella" would stay out forever if I let her. We have 6 inches of snow right now and she didn't want to come in. I'm happy she likes it. This is my first BT. All I've ever had is Chi's. Such a different kind of dog for sure.

Our two friends are very different one is social and the
other is not. One loves indoor activities the other enjoys
the outdoors. They both play with one another and they
both are toy fanatics with the result of a house is full

I agree that exercise is a huge factor! Our Boston is 15 weeks old and puppy biting was a serious problem. Initially I walked laps in our driveway with him, but as soon as we got the ok from our vet to go off property, I started walking him 15 minutes twice a day. It made a significant difference. We live in CNY where winters are cold and snowy. On bad weather days I do shorter more frequent walks. (The one day I didn’t walk him he was a beast.). Thankfully we are retired and have that flexibility.
I have found that puppies are a lot like toddlers and that the crate is our friend. 😊. For everyone’s survival, including our 10 yr old Cockapoo, the puppy goes in his crate for nap time at set times.
Toilet training I haven’t had much success with, probably because my primary focus has been the biting.
Being consistent is a real challenge that I struggle with. Thanks for your informative videos. They are both helpful and enjoyable. 😃

Maybe this tip will help others with crate training their puppy. When training our BT to get use to being in his crate, cat size crate when he was very small. I would put all his toys in the kennel and hide kibble for him to find amongst his toys. He loved this and associated the kennel as a fun place. As he rooted around through his toys to seek out the kibble I would drop more through the holes making it a game.
I did use the amount of kibble that otherwise would have been in his meal. He ate many meals this way:)

Hi Andrew, I hope I'm mistaken but I noticed in one of the photos what looked like an irregular patch of skin on her side, in front of Bella's back leg. It was slightly lumpy and "warty" looking. If this is the case please have the vet look at it. My 10 year old BT had a similar patch which turned out to be early mast cell cancer. The vet operated immediately and gave him another couple of good years. I hope this is a false alarm! Good luck!

My eight year old Boston had Puppy training at Petsmart, she learned the Come command which is invaluable to us. We actually took her crate away because she became too aggressive with our three year old Boston and us. She just has her bed now, and we put up baby gates in the kitchen when we leave the house. We also taught our oldest Baby Down! When our grandson was a baby and although we still use this, my five year old grandson states he's not a baby.

    Hi!
My Rufo is a nearly 5 months old Boston. Since he was ready to go outside we are on training, as he is my first dog and I aslo need to be trained as a dog owner 😁
When you said 30 mins of exercise routine, what do you mean? We go out at least 3 times per day, morning, lunch time and evening. First and second walks takes us around 30 minutes each (depending basically on the weather, here in the Basque Country it rains a lot), and one hour in the last walk because we usually find our "friend dogs". It depends on him, if he wants to stay more or less. Do you mean we shoudl do other additional 30 mins of real exercise, running or something like that?
Thanks in advance and congrats for the channel. It is very interesting 😊

    1. Wife and I do 60 minutes or more a day, either going for walks, playing fetch or taking him to a dog park
    2. We socialized him from the second he completed his vaccines. He grew up with a husky of the same age and we made the effort to go outside and play with other dogs.
    3. 10 months in, we still have a little trouble with leash training, but it's getting better.
    4. He does jump on people that engage with him. Otherwise, he wont.
    5. He does respect boundaries. No kitchen, no bedroom, no bathroom. No begging (have never given him food while eating)
    6. No separation anxiety.
I read A LOT before getting our Boston Terrier, like... A LOT. First dog ever for my wife and me. And we where/are VERY strict. We seem to be doing fine, this a very self congratulatory comment, I know. hehehe
But if I can do it, anyone can

My dog was already not that social with his litter mates, and was definitely animal aggressive the older he got. We were unable to take him to any public space without him trying to attack and be aggressive. Although, he was raised with a kitten sibling, and they always got along. We always regretted not socializing him more when he was young.

I definitely think all we're in point. We did the training program but had to stop, due to finding out she was severely allergic to that particular grass and cost 120.00 for vet. Setting boundaries around food, 13 years old Boston, turned into a fatty girl, you don't want a fat dog. Last if all when I moved in a senior village apartment, she wanted to jump up on everyone, because she loves people. Well some old skin us very thin, she accidentally sliced a lady arm like a razor. So at 12 years old it was possible to stop her from jumping up on people. The lady said she was tattoo by lulu, she loved Lulu so much. I just love Biston the are the best dog. Exercise I found playing ball in the house when weather is bad helps with exercise.

My biggest mistake was letting my Boston play rough, both with and without toys. As a puppy he always liked playing with toys but also just with me and he would paw at me. I thought it was funny and cute because he would also snort, so I kept playing with him that way. Now that he’s 4, he still plays that way but he is ALL muscle (he is constantly running and playing tug-of-war with my 50lb dog so my Boston’s leg strength is insane) so he can do some damage if he gets carried away, which is usually does. He’s never bitten me or anyone else, but he has left plenty of red scratch marks.

Hi! I just adopted a Year old Boston-Boxer mix(I call Gracie Lou a “Boxter ”). She is unbelievably sweet and wonderfully affectionate, but she’s been harshly handled and disciplined with an anger-pitched voice, which shows in her overly submissive behavior (cowers a lot with approaches or behavior correction). We are working on housebreaking and doing well-no crate messes when we’re at work. Looking for a good resource for guidance on continuing her training. She isn’t a puppy anymore, and I’m not sure if I should follow the great tips offered here since I wasn’t her first owner. Thanks; this group is GREAT!. Christine, UP of Michigan.

We have a problem with Maverick, he is "potty trained" but only because we take him outside every time he comes out of his crate and every couple hours. If we slip up at all and just let him out of his crate and run around he'll go in the house without ANY indication he needs to go. I've had many dogs they've always barked/scratched at the door or whined to go out. He won't do anything.

I adopted BRUNO, a 2 year old Boston terrier. The people whom I got him from told me he was house & potty trained.. THEY LIED. It took me two weeks to train him and now he goes out side… thank God.
However, he’s very, very hyper! It doesn’t matter how many times I take him out for walks he will not stop. 😳 he’s an energy machine!!! And he does this only when my fiancé gets home because with me, just him and I alone, he’s so sweet and loves to cuddle! It’s only when my fiancé gets home that he becomes a bullet with no target! He starts Biting everything and standing on his hind legs and doing this funny kangaroo thing moving his front legs and paws all over the place. Like he is boxing or scratching.
Does anyone else experience this ? Could someone give me advice to what I could do to make him relax and just be calm and still for a bit ?
I will be honest, I have felt very stressed out by this… i haven’t been able to have a relaxed evening with my fiancé, since we have had bruno.. giving up on him is not an option, I love him.. but I do need help or advice! :’(

#1 Don't allow something that you won't want them to do from now on. Bostons will not understand if you change their limits later. #2 Encourage all in the family to use the same words in training. #3 If you have more than one, teach them to take turns always making it fair for both - teaches patience. #3 Teach them "calm down", "gentle" and "we're resting." Bostons can be pushy and want to play all the time. #4 Give them lots of encouraging words when they are being very good - they will just get even better. Best breed in the world - just want to please you. #4 File their nails on a regular basis from the time they are little. #5 Don't allow one to dominate the other - keep an eye on them for this behavior. #6 Have them sleep in another room from the beginning or they will snore you awake and never allow you private "couple" time. I could write a book - fifth Boston. We now always get two so they have a friend to play, sleep, hang out with.

Body language is how animals relate to each other. If your Boston is staring at something its because they are deciding what they're gonna do. Don't wait for your Boston to chase, bark, jump up, or run away, preemptively stop bad behaviour before it starts and they will learn quickly whats acceptable behaviour. They almost always have a "tell" before they act and its easy to read if you're paying attention.

When ever I run with my puppy she bites me once she catches up with me. So its a catch 22.

I am absolutely destroyed. I was about to get my boston puppy in 2 weeks and the breeder announced me the puppy is not feeling well and most probably will....go to heaven soon. I am ....speechless.

My terrier can be so stubborn while outside. We don’t live in town so she has a huge yard that she and her pup can roam around in. I can step out of the house and call her several times and she will just stand and watch me or I can look around the corner of the house and there she is sitting just a few yards away. 🙄

My Boston was that way. She would come for my husband or dad, but she would just look at me and continue doing her own thing. Stubborn, but we love them.

I’m about to surrender him to the pound. I had a stroke and can’t keep up. He’s becoming aggressive.overly stubborn and is a walking stomach

Our biggest mistake was not walking him enough and not getting him used to dogs, so now he’s scared of all the dogs he sees. (A dog almost bit his ear one time)

Bostons have a lot of phobias...Spacial "I can't get through that door!", they are really difficult to socialize..."I don't want to go over to that person -- he has a _______"We have had 2. Neither one will snuggle! darn! ...most of all they are stubborn.."I am not going there...no way."

I wish I’d somehow banned licking from day one. Can only stop her now if I catch her in the act, couch has to have a cover on it. As far as training these stubborn, stubborn dogs, I think if you get recall down pat so they come to you first time every time.... or in my case most times 80% of the time.... you have the tool to control your dog for just about every occasion. Think about it, she jumps on visitors, recall - problem solved, running amok, recall - problem solved etc etc. Think about just about any problem situation you have with your doggy and I bet recall will solve 99% of them. The 1% being drop it/leave it and stay (for open doors etc). Recall, drop/leave it and stay are the only things I work on my girl. I had planned on plenty more but as my fellow Boston owners will know these dogs are s-t-u-b-b-o-r-n (which we love them for, not in spite of) so concentrating on a few, the potential life-saving few IMO, helps keep you and your doggy focussed.

I’ve found that Boston’s don’t do well in a one dog household. Get them a friend and most of your problems go away if you train them together.

Sleeping in the bed as puppies! BIGGEST mistake. Dogs now feel like they have to be physically touching me all night long. Definitely resist the crying in puppies, DO NOT let them in your bed. Impossible to undo.

Boston's believe they are wolves towards everyone and everything.. They are way more loving though but it hilarious how big he thinks he is
