My favorite song from the De-Loused in the Comatorium. It saddens me sometimes to see how underrated these tracks are, they are so contemplative both visually and aurally.
I hope they dont.. I fucking love them, and to 'come back' would be to fuck with the legacy. Much like how they should've left ATDI alone. The duo have so many other band names they can operate under. Just leave this one alone
i can understand the harsh criticism faced by some examples of their live playing that you might find on youtube, but i don't think you could say that about this one. The usuall complaint is that Cedric's vocals are lacking and I just don't think that's the case here. Have you heard the studio version of the song? they nailed it here, cedric is bang on, omar wails there's just not much to point at as a flaw. If you don't like this I suggest that the mars volta might not be the band for you.
They were extremely inconsistent live tho. I saw them 5 times. 2 were absolutely brilliant and 3 were underwhelming. Tool is my favorite band, but the Mars Volta is 1a. Dudes were fuckin brilliant.
You can enjoy studio albums where there is clean and polish versus a live performance when the guitar playing (while jamming) is more of a cacophony of noise rather than a dragging purpose. I'm all for improv'ing shit but when you're using that much distortion and just whamming away just sounds like hot garbage. It's good when they have proper song structure. However, to your last point, I would say that if you're like me, you might like their studio stuff but realize their live performances are just not something you're going to enjoy. That's okay to.
I saw them live when they were touring this album. Best gig I've ever seen and I was sober. His voice was amazing played for 2 hours at least no support. Drummer and omar were amazing too
I think my biggest gripe with their live shows, and it's very minor; no backing vocals. I've seen them maybe 5 times and they were always on point, but backing vocals could have really elevated those performances. Them playing Cygnus live is incredible, but it would have taken it to a new level if they had the "Nino, preparate" backing vocals.
Theodore is amazing but I actually think Pridgen era Volta is where they peaked, and while maybe not as good of a fit for the band I do believe Deantoni Parks to be the most talented drummer of everyone they had.
God I had no idea, june 2005 went to see system of a down in The Woodlands Texas. Opening acts were Bad Acid trip and The Mars Volta, when TMV took stage they were like nothing ive seen or heard before, it was like each member was the star of the band, very good at their instrument. Then 5 minutes of synth noises between each song . the day after the concert I went to the local CD store and bought every MV cd I could find
oh god... realizing how much i miss them right now -.- (and their tone... the snare is so tight and omars guitar fits so perfectly to the atmosphere of their show)
@@brandonharris9160hahahahahahahaha this dude AGAIN….. with “between the buried and me” hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahaha
This is my favorite song from them. But I only like to listen to l'via l'viaquez and cicatriz esp on and off for 20 years. Bc I feel I was a much bigger fan of At the Drive-in. 🤷🏽♀️
Does anyone know if that spider woman is an artwork by max ernst? i know loplop is the bird faced man. i used to know about the spider but can't remember, little help anyone?
Omar was playing in a lower pitch practically the whole time (except for the robot talk solo) and Cedric ... I don't even know where to begin with his vocals. He changes up the tempo and pitch unbearably Yes, I have heard the studio version of the song.
its unfortunate, but i dont think the mars volta work too well live... the vocals are what give this song it's feel and they are far too technical, complex, and hard on the vocal chords to be pulled off live...it's ashame but it's my opinion. having said that, this song rules, and the musicianship, perfect!
i love the Mars Volta but man, their live sound was never very good! Always felt for the poor drummer John...the songs are hard enough to play at normal speed but the live speed is just too much!! The songs just don't sound good...and Cedric's vocals were mostly poor live too...I'm sure if they just slowed down to the normal pace it'd sound less apocalyptic and chaotic!!
Does anyone in this band know how to play a whole note (or even a half note)? Seriously, Mash mash mash mash mash mash. 16 32 16 32 32 64 16, all instruments all time. Even Cecil Taylor knows how to pull it back once in awhile. Just awful.
I did see them on this tour and they didn't seem this bad though. I actually enjoyed it as a teenager. It must be something about the mix on TH-cam being unforgiving although that's not an excuse for bad playing. I think the overwhelming volume too helps mask the poor musicianship.
Poor musicianship? They composed this musical masterpiece. This isn’t Captain beefheart and his magic band or Zappa and the mothers of invention. Give it a break.
@@firstlast-wg2on It just seems like a mess. When I saw them play this in Boston years ago, it sounded tight. Any volta fans left in 2016?
l'm here because l was saying a friend how l was (and still love) this band
Just became one
Always

My Algebra II teacher taught Cedric in 1994.
So he could do the sums for some of TMV's time signatures.
Well, Cedric dropped out of high school that year
no he didnt
John Theodore is such a great drummer. Has been one of my favorites for a long time now.
First time I saw him play I lost my shit. Didn't know a drummer could look so damn smooth
Volta, unfortunately, is more valued now that it no longer exists. I hope they come back some day
They are coming back, if I'm not mistaken, they're in the process of making a new album

Theodore absolutely SHREDS on the drums. Jesus.
Cedric at his best. I would have loved to see them in 2005.
My favourite show was in Seattle in the gorge with the throwing lights and almost fight to the security. I will love it forever
