    The fact that Jon Theodore can play this perfectly at such a fast tempo blows my mind. I’ve been trying to learn De-loused on drums for 15+ years and still can’t play all of it at tempo. Fucking legend and my biggest influence.

      Yea Cicatriz drum pattern is tricky at high tempos. You definitely need to practice it slowly and make sure everything is tight before trying to get it up to speed

    The Mars Volta are a band of two faces. Albums that are meticulously and painstakingly written and recorded with such ridiculous intent and precision, and live shows that are pure and utter chaos. Love it.

    I totally understand why people would think this sucks, but this imo is a great performance. If you want perfection, listen to the record, if you want raw unfiltered passion and energy along with some great improvisation, then this is it. They're humans, not robots.

      I just can't get over how fast they played this song live. As a drummer a lot of TMV songs can be tricky to play, but they do so many of them double tempo live and I can't imagine how grueling that must be. True testament to the ability of these folks.

    holy shit. new fan. virtuosity in musicianship, funky, interesting themes and songwriting, lots of changes. Latin flavorings. Damn these guys are good. Love the filth in the guitar. Cedric is an incredible performer. Maybe wish the bass was more upfront but sounds pretty good on the recordings. Flea sounds great on the records. Every drummer has been great. Every album is quality, too. I'm big into these guys right now.

      their old performances were so good. look up years 2003 and 2004 live. theres some earlier ones that are interesting too before drunkship came out with jeremy ward, but those few years after drunkship were magical and probably their most well known era by fans even if we weren't around back then. for some reason we didnt get a lot of 2005 live footage, even though they were better sonically and talent wise, that was kind of their led zeppelin era and probably their 'peak'. drunkship era was more punk and wild. then 2008 they became more metal. the 2008 shows were enormously long with extremely difficult material, and they played all their old hits too. Those were great shows but once again weren't really captured that well. their last recorded performance before hiatus was also great just more refined, like malkin jewel live. it sucks they weren't professionally recorded throughout their career, the few tv shows they did it never came off that great like yahoo sets, henry rollins, mtv and letterman maybe? i never really liked those ones. But big day out and of course the electric ballroom sets are such classics i don't think it gets any better. BTW the new tour since breakup has been good, I think they aged well, it's like mars volta for old people like a fine wine now

  • @Rob954ever
    @Rob954ever 9 ปีที่แล้ว +156

    I don't know....I read a lot of the comments and I can't help but laugh that so many people make the assumption that drugs are the cause and the effect of the performance. So here's my two cents (hahaha): I think the performance is fantastic. The thing is that The Mars Volta are an extremely polarizing act. I know so many people that love them and hate them. But I think that a band like theirs is purposely ambiguous in their scope. It's part of their brilliance. And I have to have to admit that I was one of those people that didn't get them...INITIALLY. But the more I listened the more I went AHHHHH. The light came on. So,when I watch their performances,I can't help but feel that they are being "engulfed" by their own sound. There is something so primal and savage to them...and yet so cerebral and esoteric. I have really grown to love this band.

    The sheer intensity and endurance of Jon Theodore and Ikey should be aknowledged more often. Yeah Cedric and Omar were/are the upfront personalities. They recruited and in the end alienated Jon. Juan is somewhere in the middle. Thankfully Jon got picked up by QOTSA.

      +bass brain When the "performance" takes precedent over the musical performance, I am unimpressed. I am a big fan of a lot that they accomplished in their career -- but performances like this always leave me wanting to listen to the album version. That's where the MV shined. Their silly stage antics are just kind of silly and always annoyed me when I saw them live. Play the fucking song, already. There's a reason I like rock music and not the grateful dead.

      On their albums I'd agree, when there's hella noise and dissonance it's all tempered with skill and tamed to the point of being digestible (rick rubin is a god) but live their compositions just suffer a brutal and savage rendering. When your albums are produced almost flawlessly, it kind of confuses your fans when you sound like mangled garbage live.

    In my opinion this is a great performance, but i saw that most of comments doesn't agree that. One reason why i love Mars Volta and is that i have never heard perfect quality on their live performances, Cedric doesn't sing at all, but thats what mars volta sound its about. Its not about drugs either, you can realize how much they enjoy what they're playing live, even when it sounds like shit.

      Eugenio Magaña Gámez I believer you're describing the spirit of punk rock and yes that's in high doses with TMV, but live they sound like shit? And Cedric doesn't sing?
      Really?
      really?

    • @eugeniomaganagamez7373
      @eugeniomaganagamez7373 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Technically no, Cedric doesn't sing a shit. You can name it any other way but no singing. (Even though I believe in TMV they're all great musicians) Opera singers REALLY SING.
      Technically sometimes they sound like shit, yes sir! And that's awesome, i love that. I really don't understand why people want them to play exactly the same as an album record, its stupid. They worth much more for live performance, thats my point.

    I never got into this band because it was just waaaaaaaay tooooooo over the top. It was like a psychedelic 1968 performance that was a cross between Grace Slick, Janis, Grateful Dead, MC5 and a bunch of others. The only thing missing is the "twilight zone" spinner in the background for everyone tripping on acid. At first glance, you'd think this performance was Woodstock 1969. Theodore, the drummer, was the entire energy of the music...not the performance, but the music. When he left, the musical energy completely changed.

      I’m a huge TMV fan and enjoy this performance but the excuses TMV hipsters make when they’re not that great is beyond me. No, it’s not the acoustics, no, it’s not “all” about the expression. And no, you’re not just that deep that you get it.

    Hello kids. Never put a live mic In your mouth. We had to take this chick who played in my band to the hospital for electrocuting herself. We were a metal core band and she was trying to get that distorted mic in mouth sound. And all of a sudden she turned into dead weight and slammed her head on the corner of the stage. And was out cold it was scary as fuck. Apparently the shock stopped her heart for a few seconds.
