Find the lowest dose of B12 CYANOCOBALAMIN (say 50mcg) and take it 2x daily (morning, evening, at least 6 hours in between). That way you'll get less isolated B12 into the system directly and have the best B12 stores in the blood long term. Courtesy of dr. Des Harrington from Dublin:

I went vegan almost two years ago and I noticed that I got acne breakouts when I took my B12 supplements for two or more consecutive days. The dose was huge at 1500 mcg. I had seen one of your older videos about supplements saying that B12 can be reabsorbed or retained to a certain degree. I decided to only take my supplement 2-3 times per week and I feel a lot better. My acne cleared up and I don't feel groggy (if I forget for 2-3 weeks I don't feel great). Thanks for the videos. :)

I was just recently wondering about this after I found a few articles that confirmed my suspicion that I was getting pimples the day after taking my 1000ug B12 supplement. Nothing too dramatic, but I'm trying to just eat enough fortified foods instead (unfortunately, many "natural" brands here in Europe don't fortify with anything, so I have to pay attention a bit) and it's gotten better :) I always thought it sounded a bit silly that such giant doses were recommended compared to how much people usually get from food.

Thank you Mic the Vegan so much for the videos on duckweed! I've been eating vegan for 3 years now, and taking 500mcg of cyanocobalamin a few times a week. It has been causing the most horrible acne I ever had in my life despite the small amount I take. I've tried splitting the tablets, and lessening the amount I take with no avail. I never had problem with acne in my high school years. It wasn't until I started taking b12 that I developed this problem. During a Vegan Gains live stream, I personally got advice from Richard to keep taking 500mcg and lessen the frequency taken in a week, and monitor my blood levels of b12, and if it doesn't work and the levels are low, try b12 shots instead of the tablets, as it might rid of the acne problem; and finally, his last piece of advice was to look for other forms of b12 to take. I am afraid that taking a b12 shot would cause an even worse acne breakout than taking the vitamins; it's a gamble really; I wouldn't know until I try. Recently, I set up a doctors appointment to check my b12 levels because lately I have been having tremendous brain fog and dizzy spells the past 2 weeks or so, which is not common for me. 90% of what I eat is whole food vegan. Originally, upon going whole food vegan, I experienced explosive energy. It has also helped me tremendously with allergies, really bad inflammation in my head, eyes and sinsuses that made me miserable (felt like I couldn't enjoy life), anxiety and depression. I suspect it is because I refrained from taking the tablets of b12 for most of the 3 years, in hopes that if I eat enough fortified foods such as plant milks, I would be able to get my daily recommended amount without needing to worry about really bad acne. It seems I may be having trouble absorbing the b12 in the fortified foods. So I started looking into chlorella and duckweed. Both happen to be great options! I think I will try the duckweed first. I am hopeful that it will help keep my b12 levels at optimum range without the need for experimenting with the shots, or continuing tablet supplementation that cause all this horrible acne, as well as help with the brain fog and vertigo symptoms! I am excited. Thank you so much for educating the public! Keep it going. (:

I had such a terrible experience with unknowingly overdosing on B12 for a month. It scarred me (not literally, thank GOODNESS). And I took a daily tablet, not injections (never suffered from a deficiency). This should be more widespread to help vegans/plant based eaters out there who may not know this potential side effect. It broke my self esteem and drove me insane until I figured it out by accident while doing online research. Now I tell anyone who will listen! (even made a video about it). FYI: Energy drinks supplemented with B12 (such as Red Bull) can have the same effect, so be careful! I found out the hard and painful way.

Thanks, Mic! What a cool topic!
Anecdotally, this makes sense as a potential cause of acne for me. I actually got gnarly acne after I went vegan, in my 30s, with only a remote history of acne in my teens. I attributed it to the new vegan skin care products I was using (switched from the product line I had been using for a decade), and I'm sure that played a role, but this makes sense too. Eventually I actually looked closely at all the supplements I was taking - not to mention fortified foods, because I ate quite a bit of processed food when I first made the switch - and noticed that I was getting like 5000% of my recommended daily intake of B12. I've since streamlined my supplements and I've switched to a whole food plant based diet; now the acne is gone. Since my changes were multifactorial I couldn't say that B12 definitively caused the acne flare, but it's really interesting to have this variable added to the equation.

When I had my bloodwork done last year, my results came back and my neurologist showed me my B12 levels and advised me to cut it in half. According to my results, it was double the maximum amount of B12! I was taking it orally, so I ended up taking my b12 spray 2-3 times a week. The little bit of acne I developed after first taking my supplement daily disappeared after I cut my dosage 😉 take your b12 supplement and get your blood work done, people!

I know I had an increase in acne after taking really high B12 oral supplements - definitely experienced a "facial eruption" every time I took one XD. But it was dramatically worse when I ate eggs and drank dairy almost 3 years ago (Never again!) Luckily, the solution for me was just getting a lower dose supplement. Hopefully, there will be science to support this soon. Great video, Mic!

I developed an itchy rash around my neck & collarbone, went to my dermatologist who twice annually freezes the scaly areas on my scalp caused by years in tropical sun. She said quote, " I'm going to guess this is echinacea" and prescribed antibiotics. I called BS and after researching discovered that high B12 doses can cause rashes. My Super Stress B Formula from Swanson had a DAILY 125mg of B12 (5208% of RDA). I snow take once a week. Rash vanished immediately. Hope this helps!

I hope this can help some in the comments.I don't supplement B12 often anymore because of all the nutritional yeast i use , sometimes less than 3 times a week, however when I first went vegan i was taking one every day, and it was making me break out, i stopped the break outs by drinking more water, and supplementing an amino acid called L-lysine, which is found mostly in eggs an meat. It is also in tofu and soy products but i read somewhere that if you eat a lot of nuts and seeds and no soy, it's harder to get on a vegan diet, i always take that supplement because it's good for collagen production and it keeps cold sores away too, which is a major thing for me in the winter time.

Thanks for this video Mic. Its a very important subject to me as I has a SEVERE reaction to a b12 injection that left me with what I assume was nerve damage and INSANE ACNE that took about a year to completely disappear!
I had gone to the doctors and my b12 levels were a little bit low (only a little) they suggested an injection and I asked for methylcobalamin instead of the synthetic one. Somehow this confused things and when I got to the nurse they thought I was deficient and that I was needing 3 doses! I had the first one and felt ok but kept getting pains when running, a week later went back for the 2nd as they said as I assumed they knew best. After the 2nd one I checked what one they gave me and they had given me cyanocobalamin, both times, which I was wanting to avoid! Also I came to realise they thought I was deficient not just low which from my blood results was extremely wrong. After the 2nd one, a day later I could barely walk, had crazy heart palpitations, flu like symptoms and muscle pain everywhere. It took about a month for my muscles and heart to get back to normal and that's when my skin went insaaaaane, my face, chest and back and shoulders all covered in a hundred spots! It genuinely took over a year to feel normal and look normal again.
I know this is an extreme example. But yes. B12 injections can definitely cause acne!

This was really helpful; I take 1000 mg B12 once a week, time released; it's what's available at my pharmacy. I don't have any skin issues but lots of studies have shown that people who need short-term B complex supplements for a variety of reasons do much better on a low dose or fortified nutritional yeast than the 100 mg super dose. Similarly, selenium is shown to be helpful for the thyroid (brazil nuts, also great source of zinc but … less is more.) For people trying to regulate sleep, I wouldn't go near a melatonin supplement because it's not regulated by the FDA and too much is a really bad idea. Great research and good presentation.

This is super interesting. I went vegan last October and take a B12 pill everyday. Although I have struggled with bad skin previously (usually triggered by sugar) when I went vegan it got worse and the spots were more around my neck area and would stick around a lot longer which completely baffled me. I get upset every time I see a ‘I went vegan and my face is now glowing’ post. I might try and ease back on the B12, maybe just take one pill every other day or so to see if things improve :)

Hey Mike :) Very interesting video! I've got the forensic light source at my work. You can set it at different wavelengths. It would be funny to test it out on my face. :D I'm taking those high dose VitB12 pills 5 times a week and put them under my tongue so the B12 is taken up more efficiently. Though, I might ingest the pill instead if we don't need that much B12 in our system...... Now after more than 2 years of living on a plant based diet I haven't got rid off the acne like Pityrosporum Folliculitis on my face which started around a year ago. Sometimes it's gone and then it's there again.... This year I ate two pizza's of which both, I thought, were vegan. However, only one was vegan and the other was vegetarian with real cheese. Next day I discovered I had acne. Pimples on my cheek and nose and lasted for a week to recover from. Amazing how sensitive your body can be to certain food.

I had this happen with oral b12, and also when I was taking biotin. I have had both vegan and non vegan friends complain about the same issues with B supplements. It’s weird, but regular vitamin stores in the US don’t sell B12 at the recommended dosage. Personally, I just take a high dose B12 pill maybe once a month, almost at random. Probably not the best way to do it...but I’m thrifty and won’t buy more until I use up my present supply.

  • @hubrismaxim

Mic, there is one big issue with your video. Different types of B12 have different dosing requirements. For defining high dose and especially between pill and injections you must convert the dosages to their equivalent. I assume the study was on cyanocobalamin as that makes sense for the dosages cited and it’s the most studied. But a lot of people take Methylcobalamin due to a poor understanding of chemistry and a resultant fear of the “cyano” in the cyanocobalamin name. The two have very different dosage requirements. Injections are usually hydroxycobalamin. In my experience it’s rare for vegans to take the injections though. Dr. McGregor recommends cyanocobalamin.
