  • This is an edit of the original video - not new - to make it shorter, more efficient to watch.
Since I made this video I have trialed a Yamaha 821 and if I had to choose one Yamaha over the other, I would probably select the 811. Both instruments are pretty fantastic! They are SO EASY to play...smooth, responsive.
Also, after posting the original video, Mr. Leitzinger contacted me directly to explain that the instrument had been traveling on exhibition and was likely very far out of adjustment by the time I received it. I met him and played on this exact instrument at IDRS 2019 in Tampa and found the instrument to be completely different. I played on the same Model II I had trialed in this video at the conference for about 20 minutes. It was by no means an exhaustive trial but clearly indicated that the instrument was not at peak performance when I had it on trail. You can learn more about these instruments and set up trials from U.S.-based Leitzinger artist, Frank Morelli. www.morellibas...

Both 601 and 811 sound great in this video. Fox is a very solid instrument but this Yamaha, is truly exclusive. Everything sounds easy and effortless, legato connections are smooth, the timbre is consistent across the entire range, the vibrato projects nicely. Comparable to a vintage pre-war Heckel in top shape. Great instrument indeed

For my ears the music parts are best played on Fox. It has such a clear fine tone and best articulation, double tounging, intonation.
Leitzinger sounds very nice - but intonation it's not so good, i think.

I definitely struggled with the Leitzinger. There were some mechanical issues with the instrument as it had been shipped around quite a lot. I tried another Leitzinger several months later and had a better experience. The Fox (at the time of this video) was my primary instrument which certainly allowed me to sound most comfortable in these comparison videos.

Very good comparison. Which of them is your own instrument? I like the Yamaha but the Fox seems like bigger dynamic range.

At the time of this video, my primary instrument was the Fox 601.

I would probably want something a bit freer in the bottom octave. That being said, this bassoon, being new, would continue to open up. Paired with the right reed, I'm sure you could mold it into what you desire. Contact Mark Ortwein or Derreck Bannasch who have played the Yamahas full time. I'm sure that could speak more specifically to their suitability. I will say that I tried this exact instrument again at IDRS and was impressed all over again!

    Hi Elizabeth,
Did you use the same bocal with all bassoons?

    • @bassoonwithaview

I used the bocal that came with each bassoon. If there was more than one, I used the bocal that best worked with my reed setup. Not a perfect system and an excellent reminder of the innumerable variables involved in the selection process.

How would you compare the 811 with a 812? I have the 812C myself and loved it but would like to hear some more opinions. Any input would be nice
