  • This was, by far, the most challenging side-by-side video I have made. These instruments are all extremely different from each other: pitch center, keywork, response. I struggled quite a bit moving between each instrument and I had to switch up my reeds which I have largely avoided when making these videos.
    You need to know that the Heckel Crest was much too large for me. I was depressing keys on the long joint while trying to play in the top octave. The technical issues really prevented me from doing any justice for this impressive instrument. I was really intrigued by the runs of Le Sacre and opening to Tchaikovsky 6. There is a ton of potential in this instrument for the right player. A few of my students were very fond of it and had no problems playing it really well. One student played his entire lesson on the Crest and sounded wonderful! It was a bit disappointing to hear him switch back to his Fox 601 at the end of the lesson.
    This side-by-side definitely confirmed my decision to move in a completely new direction for my in playing. Thin wall is definitely for me and I'm really excited to make this transition.

    Thank you for posting these videos!! I can’t wait to hear which instruments you prefer.
    My opinion: the 601 was very powerful, the 201 was noticeably brighter and more clear but had some edges to the sound, the 150 was very sweet/rich sounding but I can see where it might be difficult coming out of an orchestral texture because of how abundant the overtones are. Have you tried these in an orchestra? What do they say? I’m pretty curious.
    Thank you again for these great videos!

      I think the Moosmann is going to develop into a gorgeous instrument. I will be trying different bocals with it and focus its use to chamber music for a while.

      The Moosmann did't do well in orchestra based on colleague feedback, the Yamaha 821 and the Fox 201 did very well. However, I really feel positive that once the Moosmann gets played in, it will develop into a lovely orchestral instrument. This is the challenge of buying new vesus old - something I have been thinking a lot about this past week.

    Hello dear bassoonist. The 201 and the Moosmann sounds fantastic for you. Permanently, I am a fan of Heckel and the 601s, but this time I have to say you reach a smoother, clearer and sweeter tone, plus a more accurate intonation with both 201 and the 150. I'd love to listening to you adding a Fox model II to these comparison sessions. Regards!

      It has been such a fascinating process and I have definitely landed on a spot that I didn't expect. The Heckel was very interesting to play! I'm glad I had the opportunity. The Heckel is not the instrument for me but someone will love it, I'm sure.

      My playing style has changed so much in the past 3 years! My thick wall playing days are definitely over. I'm pretty fond of the 201 and Moosmann!

      @@bassoonwithaview Don't forget the Yamaha 811. This is very personal, but I think that's by far the best sounding you reached in the recordings. Have you already rejected?

    • @bassoonwithaview
      @bassoonwithaview  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ALBERTOFIO Oh my, the 811 was wonderful! Ultimately, for me, there was some feedback from colleagues and challenges with my own setup that pushed me in a different direction but, objectively, it was a marvelous instrument!

      I agree with the comments above and have to add that the Heckel Crest was just not good on the Bolero. The Fox 201 and the Moosmann 150E are the ones that get me saying, "Ooh, which one is that?" You sound easy and free. I'm so excited for you to not be playing on this particular 601 anymore..(though I got a great big belly laugh out of the low-E tuning on the beginning of Tchaik 6 with the 601) - you must feel the world opening up to you! :)
      Thank you for sharing this exploration, it's been incredible!

    Incredible how great all of them sound though. You would think the Heckel would be night and day different at the price range. Are these all on Heckel/Leitzinger Bocals?

    • @bassoonwithaview
      @bassoonwithaview  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bocals I used were whatever came with instrument. I feel like at the initial stages of testing, you should stick with whatever came with the instrument to avoid introducing too many variables at first. This is my opinion. I know other bassoonists trial instruments with their favorite bocal or immediately switch out bocals.

      @@bassoonwithaview Ah, yeah, I'm trialing Heckel bocals right now, and even though it's a Fox 222, I'm getting an incredibly improved sound just with the bocal. I hear even the professional fox bassoons work really well with Heckel bocals.

    Recording in such a acoustic cannot give any valuable judgement. The differences are negligible. A close set mic would be much better. The most important requirement of any bassoon is intonation. Thereafter a pleasing tone - BUT these tone qualities are only really noticeable to close by colleagues and in professional recordings with close mics.

      I agree! I have been fortunate to play all these bassoons in multiple settings: my studio, orchestra rehearsals and performance, and chamber music. Of course recording, editing, posting ALL of those would have been impossible. Ultimately, every bassoonist has to go on their own journey for their perfect instrument. Thanks for watching and sharing your insight!

    So helpful thanks! It's funny, I thought this auditorium looked familiar! I was one of Dr. Adams' students back from 2010-2013. I'm now in the market to finally purchase an instrument of my own and I'm so glad you made this. Thank you! - Steffen

    Can you still find Heckel Crests? How good are they to the regular Heckels also?

    • @alexalestareon695
      @alexalestareon695 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I read somewhere that the only real difference between the crest and the heckel is the quality of the metal work. Apparently the bore and wood is all the same.

    • @bassoonwithaview
      @bassoonwithaview  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if they are still making Crests. I rarely see them listed on the various websites that sell bassoons new and used.
