    I bought one of those at the PX in Japan when they first came out. Used it (with a pen toggling the buttons) for artillery calculations at the guns. It couldn't take the field conditions of rain, cold, mud, and shock and broke/died after a couple of weeks, but it looked cool in the bars on liberty when it was working.

    I've had this one for decades. To this day people ask me about the calculator.
    I concur about the lack of a backlight.
    The battery lasts about 7 years.
    I just saw another video about changing the battery. After all these years, I didn't know that after the new battery is installed, you have to touch a thin wire to the top of the newly-installed battery and a spot near the letters "AC", effectively restarting the watch.

      @@edmund8954 honestly i don't remember, but they weren't the cheap option at the store, and my parents weren't about to get one for me, and I had to make due with a quartz movement analog watch lol. They cheapened up at the end of the decade, and became much more available. The speed at which things got smaller and faster was incredible to see. My dad had to buy an ibm pc clone for his business in that time period, cost over 4 grand and was just a DOS machine, lol. Heck, even a portable electronic calculator was expensive. I remember being blown away as a kid by the (I belive it was also a casio) kids version shaped like an owl, with a red vacumn display....lol. makes me feel old. And I'm only early 40s...

    • @AwkwardHypernerd413
      @AwkwardHypernerd413 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm honestly shocked that the CA-53w didn't become stupidly expensive like the original sony walkman did because of pop culture and movies. I always wanted one when i was a little kid, but I thought that they were expensive, then I got one at a walmart for 20 bucks in the summer of 2017, and I never let go of that watch ever since. It broke recently, but I'll just get another one. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

    I first got one of these in 1984 because of Alex P. Keaton (worn prominently by Michael J Fox, which is why it's also Marty McFly's choice of watch- he made both at the same time). I'm glad they still make them, because in 2017 I picked up another one at a local Kmart. Casio has some outstanding watches they've made over the years- calculator, scientific calculator, television remote, temperature/barometer/altimeter, you name it, and Casio probably did it!

      No, you needed to be born in the 70's to live the 80's, no one born in the 80's really lived them, because the first half they were babies and toddlers, remembering nothing of the time- their first memories come well after half the decade is over and are still in grade school when they end, while 70's babies (until 1977) were at least in junior high school.

    The buttons on that watch were tedious to hit even as a 1st/2nd grader...I was apt to playing video games as it was and button pressing. It was all about saying you have it. To be honest maybe adults or older kids at the time did. But as a kid in elementary it was a status symbol almost purely. We were basically always required to own calculators on our school supply list - and of course once middle school required ti-83s we got invested in those as a geek item. It always made more sense to do longer session or bigger math problems on a normal calculator. And obviously you weren't getting away with it on a test lol. I remember getting newer watches and being fine with leaving the calculator watch behind. It just was niche and highly non practical 95% of the time. 90s for some reason has memories of lots of cool function watches.

    People mentioned Walter White ( Breaking bad ) , Marty McFly ( BTTF part II ) , The Joker ( dark knight ) but nobody mentioned the Ultimate GEEK : Wayne Szalinski ( Rick Moranis ) in Honey I shrunk the kids , ... and in the sequel Honey i blew up the kid , both Wayne Szalinski and his son Nick Szalinski are wearing Casio ca-53W . This is the best watch ever , i have 3 of this model and its the same identical watch as the 1988 released CA 53-W . ** Since late 2020 thought , Casio has modified the WR in the top right corner with an Outlined ( that shape like a HDMI contour ) . The right version is the model before 2020 , the one shown in this video , with the WR plain without a contour ( outline ) . Grab this model if you can , its a perfect replica of the classic 1988 model we have seen on many movies and its a timeless iconic watch and his identical to the one in my 1989 Sears Christmas catalog ) .

    Weird. I'm wearing mine for the first time in a while and this video pops up. I live in Sweden and they're not very common here, had to order one from Israel and after taxes it was around 45$. Cool watch.

    Unfortunately I think that as of 2020 it has been discontinued in favour of the much modern newly released colourized versions with the negative screen look, of that same model! Prove me wrong but in most of the searching online, it is listed: "Unavailable" so I don't really know what to think!

      they did change the Ca-53W a bit ... the WR is now outlined ( contour ) , but its still available , the black one your refering to is the Ca 53-w 1Z , its one of the variation of 3 colors ( camo , white , and black , they did in 2020 and the screen is a negative screen look . i perosnnaly have no interest in thos e, they are not the classic

    Correction. Marty McFly wore a CA-50 and not the CA-53.
