@Meine.Postma In the interview I've read Michael Stipe did not mention that the song was specifically about Kurt Cobain although yes they were friends.
He stated it was about an anti-suicide message focusing on teens and young adults because of the spike in self-harm and suicide in that age bracket.
Either way, it is a hauntingly beautiful song that has helped so many people across the world.

I first heard this song when is was released in 1992. My father died, drowning in his own blood, in front of me on the kitchen floor, 16 days after in my 18th birthday, in 1992.
That song helped me survive that year.
And ever since, each and every time I hear it, I burst in tears.
It hits SO deep, SO true, for EVERYONE, ever, all over the world.
Take comfort in your friends, indeed ... without my friends in that 1992 year, I would have thrown up my hand and let go of life.
People need to know that everyone is a fighting a battle no one knows about.
This song always gives me chills. It means different thing to different people. But I think everyone can relate somehow.

I had actually thought the same thing- this song is right up your alley and in the spirit of the channel. Glad you quickly picked up on how the captions went from the lyrics to all the thoughts all the people were having. I still remember the first time I saw this video, because I had that same reaction to the big moment: suddenly he opens his mouth to sing the words, and then everybody (who hurts) gets out of their cars at the same time. And all of them just go walking away together. I think it’s a metaphor to reinforce the message of the song- everybody, every one of us, we’re hurting in some way, but at the same time there’s a real unity to that.
I listened to this all the time during my marriage breakdown in the mid 90s. Friends asked me why I listened to this depressing song. I told them "NO", listen to the lyrics and you will know. I regularly play it when I'm a bit down.
The silly misconception that cheery music is helpful when you are down never makes sense to me. When you are really down a happy song makes no sense and for me it just makes me resent the idea that anyone can feel happy when I have been depressed. The stuff that reaches you when you are down is often music saying "Yeah life can be really shitty, but you aren't alone"
I've heard this song hundreds and hundreds of times, yet I never saw the music video before. It's fun to see how the video adds to the song. Thank you, Amanda, for the work you're doing.
This is one of the few songs I can honestly say has saved my life. On more than one occasion, it provides catharsis, that release can be important...
I remember this track really well !!! They was asked about what made them write this song and they said at the time that it was written to highlight the teenage suicides that was a concern due to the scale of young suicides that was happening in the uk at that time…
I couldn’t listen to this song for about 10 years, as soon as it came on the radio I had to change the station. It took me till my middle age to be able to listen to it without bursting into tears and I still don’t know why.

what struck me the most was the helicopter new reporter at the end,300 to 400 people,was the average number of people in america that took there lives every day in the year before the song came out,the numbers droped dramatically in the following year

I still remember in high school, we were doing a workshop about save driving and we ended up watching a video featuring driving accidents, victims, their families, and this song played through the whole video. Everyone in that auditorium was crying that afternoon, myself included. There's mainly two songs that always make me break down and cry whenever I hear them. One of them is this one, and the other is "Monsters" by James Blunt. Highly recommend that one if you haven't listened to it yet.

I honestly never knew what people with depression had to deal with until i was extremely depressed about a situation i couldn't control after that i thought to myself if anyone has to deal with this a lot its so sad
Hopefully you are still reading comments on thus video, i can only imagine how hard it is to keep up with everything doing a channel, but your commentary on this song about reminding us we are not alone reminded me of a song that literally saved my life. This first time i heard it i was on my way to a secluded place to end my life, and hearing this song stopped me, reminded me of all the things i should hang on for, i should live for, a d that i was not alone in it.
The song is "Swim" by Jack's Mannequin. There is qn official video for it too. Its a song that means a lot to me, and i hope it can mean a lot to many people. Hopefully it can help someone like it helped me.

Jack's Mannequin was a soul searching project for the singer Andrew McMahon and had 3 albums. Id suggest checking out the band he had before called Something Corporate (As You Sleep and Konstantine are great songs) as well as his newer stuff under the name Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness (Cecilia and the Satellite is my fav song of that project).
R.E.M. Were massively underrated by a great many people
This is probably their biggest hit, and it really resonates with everyone who listens to it.
The album "Automatic for the people" was a constant in my CD player back in the day. This track was the 4th on that album, and it was huge
Yet they sold over 90 million albums and are one of the best selling artists of all time, but yeah, totally underrated. Oh and they have inspired a whole new Generation of artists and Kurt Cobain ie Nirvana said they were the best artists he had ever heard, but yeah, as you stated, totally underrated. Losing my religion sold almost double the number of singles compared to this song. They also have 8 albums that made it to no1 in the charts

"The night is always lonelier" - it's the opposite for me, strangely. I'm mostly nocturnal, and I have trouble being reliably active in daytime. When I do go outside in daylight, everything feels too bright. And the people who are out in the day never feel like they're really "there" to me. Almost everyone who's out during the day is in a constant process of trying to be somewhere else, while people who are out at night are often wandering but happy to be where they are, or are already somewhere they want to be, and planning to stay there a while. Being out at night feels comforting and safe for me, in contrast to most people finding it lonely and empty and often scary.
This song hits me so hard and I always end up in tears. Such a beautiful but heartbreaking song...

I always thought the end of that video was a comment on how many people commit suicide on a given day.
If a large number of people got out of their cars and disappeared in a day, it would be news...

EVERYONE has their "Dark times" in life. It is what we do about it/ how we handle it that matters. I think of this song when I have my melancholy moments. Only what "I" think is what matters; others don't know or may not understand. People are judgmental without full knowledge and those "types," are really the inadequate ones. They see you as weak because you are vulnerable at that moment, but it is truly THEY who are weak and need to feed on your vulnerability.
Me: I'm a loner, but not lonely. When I'm down; I pause and take stock. I realize that time is temporal, and realize that the current situation is too, and time will pass it by. LOOK FORWARD: NOT where you are at the moment.

I'll tell you a little bit:
Since you are very young, I want to recommend this song from 1985 (I'm sure that in that year you weren't even a little person project) and maybe you don't know.
HEAR N'AID - "STARS"
The Hear n' Aid project was metal's response to pop music charities such as Band Aid and USA For Africa; whose organizers had not invited anyone from hard rock/metal (as almost always, very reviled) So the metalheads did it on their own.
Hear n' Aid was founded in 1985 by Ronnie James Dio, a long-time contributor to numerous charitable projects over the years. Hear n' Aid didn't get much media coverage and didn't achieve box office sales like Band Aid or USA for Africa, but it generated a respectable amount of revenue.
Ronnie James Dio (Dio/Black Sabbath/Rainbow/Elf), Jimmy Bain (Dio/Rainbow) and Vivian Campbell (Dio/Def Leppard) were responsible for writing "Stars", the single originally written that would help generate income for the hunger.
In May 1985, Dio gathered more than 40 hard rock/metal musicians from around the world, and they recorded the song "Stars."

Seeing the honesty of your channel in addressing the important subject of mental health, I am amazed you do not have Peter Gabriel's video "Don't Give Up" with Kate Bush. Genesis also has some very interesting music and lyrics that touch on much of what you are aiming towards. Check them out, please. (Peter Gabriel came from Genesis, then Phil Collins took over). Phil Collins also has some very meaningful music. I have not checked for these next two bands, but assume you have reviewed (or certainly WILL view) the Cranberries 'Zombie' video and Disturbed's 'Down With the Sickness' (long version). A lot of thematic material in those songs!

I've heard this song quite a few times, or at least the chorus anyway. Never knew it was by REM though. I highly recommend checking out "The Strong" by Eva Under Fire and Home Free's collab with Mark Wills on his song "Don't Laugh at Me", if you haven't seen them already. They'll both fit very well with your message and content.
Another song well worth a listen is Don't Give Up by Peter Gabriel, featuring Kate Bush.
Hi Amanda hope you are well. Everybody Hurts is one my fave songs by R.E.M next to Losing My Religion also by R.E.M. 2 other songs you should check out if you haven't already are 1 Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward it reminds me of my girlfriend who died that I told you about before because Autumn/Fall was our fave time of year. One verse in particular in the song makes me think of her the most but they are mainly happy memories. My second suggestion is Return To Innocence by Enigma the lyrics of it are so deep. I also want to say thank you for being the wonderful person you are. I've been through a lot in my life also but I will talk about that another time.

You should do a reaction to Hello by Evanescence. Amy Lee wrote it about the loss of her younger sister when she was a child. Its POV is dealing with the grief as a child and growing up. Its a hauntingly beautiful song.
I tend to like songs that have deep meaningful themes and are generally uplifting and/or hopeful.
Songs by my favorite band, Styx, are mostly that way - from hits like "Fooling Yourself" and "Come Sail Away" to others with deep meanings and introspective tones like "Man In The WIlderness" and "Castle Walls".
Note: If you do "Come Sail Away" do the original studio version or live from 1996's "Return To Paradise" and NOT the Official MTV video.

@@MentalAmandaI'm sorry, I really disagree with this statement. I'm lonely, and I don't want to be. I reach out to friends as often as I can, but there's only so much free time they have. My depression gets worse during the winter and I am lonely all the time.

I can see where this original commenter is coming from, even though I don't think they're right.
Most people who feel alone or lonely don't choose it, in my view.
I'll never understand basic human emotions. You talk about everyone hurting at some point, and for me getting over things is so easy, it happened, now you go on. For a lot of people they tend to constantly think about what happened, and it weighs down on them. The problem is never what happened, it is just how often you think about it. Stop thinking about the bad, and move on with life, good or bad. Just move on, don't let anything bring you down. Me talking to someone 1 on 1 is different than just reading my comment here. But you can't just focus on things that have happened. If it was a bad experience, let go of that memory, remember it, but don't let it affect you. This is for every aspect of life, any addiction, if you don't want it, don't do it. If you cannot control your brain to the point to make decisions, I have no solution for you.
It's not about emotion. Some find moving on or not thinking about it simple. Some are plagued with intrusive thoughts that no amount of wishing away or reasoning away will combat. It's a process, a skill that many have to learn. Not everyone learned to control their brain and, sometimes, the brain hijacks the person and they lose the ability to rationalize. You are neurotypical, so your brain seems to be working correctly. Myself and many here are neurodivergent, so it does not work correctly and requires intervention.
