Today I reacted to Chandelier by Sia from the Voices album. Thank you boneychuck for being my VERY first Patreon (many moons ago, haha) and for suggesting this song. I'm starting to get into the Sia groove but this is my first time hearing this song! As I begin to open up and admit a bit, I needed my own message today.

Very glad I found your channel. My fight has been going on most of my life and it always helps to meet anyone that can even understand a little. There is a band that touches on some of my struggles I would love to see you react to. Five Finger Death Punch (dont let the name scare you) songs; Gone Away, Wrong side of Heaven, and Coming Down. They try to bring light to suicide and veterans issues. Always know even if you feel like you are fighting the fight is worth it and I would miss you.

I went for years not really following Sia or her music. This was the first video of hers I saw and it left me stunned. I’ve lived with PTSD from childhood and “self-medication” is still something I struggle with. I applaud your candid openness, it’s something we need more of. I say this while crying in my kitchen because I’ve downed a bottle of wine I didn’t even want.

I'm a year sober from drugs and alcohol. It is very difficult to stop, i had to stop hanging out with alot of people and it hurt and i lost alot of friends but I eventually made way better friends and the true friends will always stay. Its a very hard struggle to quit but once you do it gets way better very fast. Now i can't even imagine drinking or drugs anymore. Its almost like it never happened.

The song is about her life. Sia was an alcoholic and drug addicted for many years, and she has struggled really much with anxiety and depression. Before she startes her artist life with the wig, she was going to commit suicide. I love the song and is a really big fan of Sia🖤🤍

Amanda, thank you. You said something in this video that made me realize that I have been doing this for a long time now. I have no real addictions to speak of. I don't do drugs, and I'm terrified of what alcohol can do to a person. I lived with that in my immediate family for many years and I have completely stayed away from that part of society since. But you made me realize that I have been living life, just barely one day at a time. I don't seem to care what happened the day before or look to anything beyond the current moment. I didn't even think anything of it until you mentioned that behavior like this could still be linked to depression even without the vices. I don't really feel depressed, but then again I honestly haven't felt much of anything in years.

    Thank you for this.
I first saw this video the day the news broke about Robin Williams' suicide.
This song, for me, will always be about pain, hiding from pain & the contemplation of ending that pain.
If you look closely at Maddie's facial expressions, they are often exaggerated & conflict with her body movements. The "crazy eye" is a throwback to Bob Fosse & putting on that happy mask "the show must go on!" (Smile through the pain.)
The portion with the curtains sealed the suicide notion, for me. Maddie is hanging herself with the curtains.

This reaction got me to think of this song in a different way, i think it meant that she is swinging in the chandelier to show everyone else how happy and perfect her life is.
Sia has a voice that goes directly to my soul, it might be beacuse she is singing from her soul.

    "How does she do that?"
Well, she's a modern dancer, light yet muscular, and all of it is under her control. So she has more mass than you'd expect, and extraordinary flexibility. She can brace herself against that mass, and it looks odd because you think she'd have no stability.
Apparently, Maddie Ziegler (that's her name) felt that this video was a fun thing to do because it wasn't as strenuous on the body as the stuff she's normally asked to do.

She is talking about partying hard when you are dying inside. So you have one more song to react to from the trilogy - Elastic Heart. Prepare for amazing vocals, amazing lyrics, amazing interpretative dance - again. :) By The way, the dancing is not random at all, it's a choreography made by Rayn Heffington, long term colab and friend fo Sia, genius dancer. He signs all the Maddies moves - including the ones from the previous vid - Big Girls Cry. And Maddie repets them exactly every time, with the same emotion - in Sias' tour, on stage. :) here is a video that explains quite accurately Sia's art and emotion th-cam.com/video/5xBZChXr-UE/w-d-xo.html

@@MentalAmanda It's not, but this is what Ryan and Sia wanted to express - that easyness and freedom of expression. Sia said she wanted to put anyone in a wig and anyone can be a popstar, anyone should have a chance for self expression and nothing has to be perfect. She impacted a lot Ryan's choregraphy asking him to make the moves look easy and natural and not too polished. "Imperfection is beauty" is her motto and she wants that to be reflected in her art. :)

Holding on all night not wanting the good time to stop, drinking and drinking and when its all said and done the next day you feel ashamed of yourself and hate yourself for it and the only way to make it better is to start drinking again. The swing from the chandelier is in reference to partying and trying to have a good time. Then the next verse she references waking up and feeling shame and having to deal with the day of shame before she drinks again to try and feel the good time again. The curtsy at the end, I think, is in reference to the facade of being happy but really feeling bad about yourself. If you pay attention to Maddie's expression when she does it she puts on a very fake smile when doing the curtsy and then when she comes back up has a very distraught face, her true feeling.

I've never thought about this song/music video in the way you describe. In particular, Maddie Ziegler's amazing performance ... taken right to the edge of physical instability ... now makes a lot more sense as an embodiment of mental instability. The central image of swinging on a chandelier also takes on a double meaning, thanks to your insight. I had the good fortune to meet Sia Furler right at the start of her career in the mid-90s, before she was famous. At the time, she was being introduced to record companies by her agent in London (UK) as a jazz and blues singer. I still have some demo recordings she gave me ... at the age of 20 she had a deeply soulful, rich voice steeped in jazz, a world apart from 'Chandelier'. R (Australia)

She's talking about the hyper-excited party-girl behavior called swinging from the chandelier. If there's any suicide element, it's in the line "I'm holding on for dear life," but I see that line more as trying desperately to keep her life and feelings from falling completely to pieces. It's a recognition of her problem and knowing that she needs to try to maintain control, clinging to hope even as she knows she's not likely to succeed. And each night, she can deal with no more than only that night, and even that is not at all assured.

Amanda in a leather jacket 😍🔥💞 I didnt even think about the jacket in regards to heat, only that i thought "Hot daymn,Amanda looks good in that jacket!" #NoPunsIntended Sia is one of thoose ladies that i embraced early on,noone really sings like her. And yes,i do hear slight usage of autotune on some of her songs (just a tiny bit),wich makes me cringe lol. Because she is clearly too good to even use it a tiny bit. #RantOver I understand now better why she would never do interviews with a full face reveal,at first i thought it was just a odd fashion/image thing. But as soon as she opened up about her struggles in life,it made sence why she felt more comfortable doing interviews with her face covered up. I have that feeling often, just to do a thing like going to buy groceries.....sometimes i feel better if im wearing shades/sunglasses. Yup,just like people with a hangover.....when the nerves are too much on edge,it feels better "hiding".
Sia reminds me alot of our own precious diamond, Aurora. In the way they perform, very random, very unique, something you cant really fake. Aurora is making it into a thing with breaking reaction channels into tears, whenever they do songs of her. Now granted Aurora (Norwegian artist) has never suffered from the things Sia has,but Aurora grew up with people around her finding her "strange". She would invite her imaginary friends back in for dinner, and instead of questioning her or pushing for a diagnosis on her,her parents would put on plates, glasses etc for her imaginary friends as well. They saw that whatever she had, wasnt giving her discomfort,pain/suffering,and it didnt hold her back in any way. So they gave her an upbringing based entirely on love. (She only had one situation where classmates laughed at her, calling her strange when she confronted theyr laughs....maybe her being so direct early on,saved her from being bullied even more) It was after they had a IQ test at theyr school, and Aurora modestly remembers "I scored pretty good on it". So abit of jealousy mixed with them calling out her "strange" behaviour? I look upon it as the very start of bullying, but since she showed baldness and not being afraid to confront them, they moved on? I think so. But yeah,Aurora is really sharp, well spoken.....but you can tell from her body movements, facial expressions and such,that....its something special about her. Things you cant fake, but as her parents, everyone now embraces her and her songs completely! And the feedback is that she touches people deeply on a level no other artist have done, because she is so unique, vocally and in performing,so real. And shes just a complete sweetheart.
Thats why i see alot of Aurora in Sia,although they have lived 2 very different lives (But for all i know, they might have some of the same mental things.....Auroras are just undiagnosed),they seem to have some similar "performances" in eye movement, body movements, the talent in telling theyr story.
I absolutely LOVE David Guetta & Sias collab called "She Wolf" (Falling To Pieces) Sias vocals really shines in that one,David is a Electronic Dance DJ,so the song is more raw, upbeat then this one. But the lyrics, the video....phew,i have even found myself tearing up from the story of the video told. One of the best collabs in that genre by far! Just something about Sias voice, and oh man does she pack a punch in that voice, when she needs to.
This is probably the most in depth reaction of one of Sias song i have seen btw!

@@siapolicia4826 well, there are artists that are always on pitch that uses it,slightly or annoyingly "too much" (beats me why,but they do). I wasnt referring to this song in particular, but i do hear the difference between a filter aka effects and autotune when its used. She doesnt even need filters on a dance/electronica song in my opinion. I have heard her sing live, basically more of a unplugged setup. She doesnt need "addons",shes too good! #RepeatingMyself

My take is that "I want to swing from the chandelier", is about her chasing a feeling of ecstasy that she is addicted to.
    In this case through drinking.
This song doesn't work for me without the sound of desperation she brings to it.
Puddles Pity Party did a decent cover on America's Got Talent.

What I appreciated most about this video was that Amanda focused on the underlying message instead of overreacting to the video and choreography. It's sad that we still live in a world where we have to cloak real issues that are stigmatized behind theatrics (nothing against Maddie Ziegler who is super talented).

What I get is that her prison is sexual promiscuity, trying to fill an emotional void. Swinging from the chandeliers is an expression of freedom; a break from the current, painful reality into a life that she knows is out there, but for the moment, she cannot seem to attain.

I feel like no one cares about me. Ive been debating to myself whether or not im an empath and I think I am. I care SO MUCH about everyone else. They tell me their problems or basically anything they're going through-one has even called me their "therapist". I try asking them sometimes when they're being more quiet than usual, I reach out to them. But they dont check up on me. They're not awful friends, or maybe Im forcing myself to think that way I honestly don't know anything. This whole comment is a mess like I am. I try to give hints that im not okay, that I need help since its not easy being direct with my emotions. I know I can just tell them but its a different story when they're the one asking me first. I feel like I dont matter to them, I feel like an outcast. I feel lonely. I feel tired everytime that I have a problem, even a small one. I sleep usually for 10 hours and I would still feel like sleeping right after I wake up. Im not sure if that's me trying to escape reality. I feel like this problem is so petty and small and childish and maybe even selfish. I feel like im such a weak person when I share my problems. I dont know who to tell, who to ask help from. I dont think I can share these petty feelings to anyone I know personally. Its a petty feeling but to be honest its really affecting me, I cant get it off of my mind, ive been crying about it constantly. I cant do my schoolwork without pushing myself. Im looking for ways to distract myself. And this may sound weird, but I miss the sadness when its gone. Im sometimes unsure if I want my problems to be fixed or not. I dont know what to do anymore, every decision that I make, I regret. Its like every option is a bad option. Anyway, if you've read until this part, thanks for your time. I hope you're doing well and God Bless you.

First of all, this is incredibly normal. I too am an empath and I have learned that I have to really amp up the self-care to make sure the compassion fatigue doesn't get too intense. Second, people who are struggling can get really lost in their own head and their own world. It doesn't mean they don't care, they might just be too exhausted themselves and don't know how to cope.
