@ScreenPrism This just an idea.. Could you do an analysis on the 2016 movie 'Split' & maybe explain the abstract connection to the 2000 movie 'Unbreakable'?¿ Or/if not, just the evaluation of a single title. Thanks.
True. Its hard to play this type of character and I find many "weird" characters on sitcom as not funny and I dont get their jokes. To be honest during season 1 pheobe is my least favorite character. But come season 2 she was on fire. I think she starts to understand her character better as time progress
She's a genius. She survived the streets when she was 14, she taught herself to play a guitar, she wrote songs, she has written 15 books and even without a formal education she learned to speak French and Italian. She's also good at reverse psychology and made Ross admit that Darwin's evolution is one of the possibilities not the ONLY possibility.
the thing about friends is that, behind the laughs and giggles there's a deep connection viewers see in each character reflecting real life people. Phoebe is scarred yet because of this, she chose to view the world in a brighter light. She saw the beauty in this world in spite of deep scars. Because of the trauma she saw in her childhood, her everyday troubles seem minuscule and petty. Among all friends I see Phoebe as one with the most wisdom.
Phoebe is the "wise fool" archetype, which means she can poke fun at people and say the truth without ever offending anyone. An essential archetype in comedies.
If you look at interviews in the beginning they were planning on making Phoebe and Ross side characters. But then they started the Ross and Rachel dynamic and they thought of removing phoebe because they were having a hard time making it realistic that these people would hang out with someone like her but then Lisa said “it’s believable if they say so. If they say she’s their friend people will believe. ” I couldn’t imagine this show without her, she’s my all time favorite character. She had the hardest life yet the best attitude, embraced all her quirks and remained confident and secure through anything. A perfect fictional role model.
Phoebe is the most interesting & unpredictable character. Rachel is the most developed character. Joey is the sweetest, innocent & most genuine character. Chandler is the most misunderstood & most loving character. Monica is the most neurotic yet the most ambition (all of it came true - losing weight to having a family) & she's the most caring. Ross is the geekest, most practical person (asking Rachel to get married after knowing she's pregnant), most responsible.
I feel like Monica and Ross are very similar as characters but are disguised as different with genius writing. They are siblings and therfore it makes sense that they are similar but they use their similarities in different ways to make the story more intresting and avoid having two of the same character. They’re both very competitive, ambitious, responsible and perfektionists, but in different ways. They share some character flaws such as over competivness, demnding, need for atention etc.

MountMister, have you ever heard of the Myers-Briggs Personality theory? It suggests that there are sixteen basic 'types' of people, based on the way they think, behave, and communicate. Phoebe was an 'Idealist' type, one of the rarer types, and that's why she feels like the odd one out. If you've ever felt like you are full of grand thoughts and strange ideas, but when you bring them up you just get a bunch of funny looks, you may also be an Idealist type. Random personal reflections you don't have to read: Growing up, my family would watch the news and then Friends, often reruns, most every night. It was a fun family bonding experience (though I can honestly say I most of the jokes went right over my head!). Phoebe was always my favorite character, I felt like I just "got" her in a way. I became a vegetarian when I was 6 because I had just found out what meat was, I was a wide-eyed animal lover, and I was stubborn as hell. Neither my parents nor anyone I knew at the time didn't eat meat. Looking back, I think having an on-screen vegetarian character who was fun, charismatic, and most of all who I related to definitely helped me stick with my decision. Your description of her as the "principled" crone who just wants to "make the world better" while still not "hardening herself due to bitterness" and becoming overly dogmatic definitely hits home. The writers totally could have played off her choice to be vegetarian as a big joke, and while it's a sitcom and they still slipped some jokes in there, they used it as a natural facet her character. Her vegetarianism was a genuine wholesome reflection of her worldview and value systems. I took that in as a kid so much. I realized I wanted to make a decision for myself because I felt it was right, and I could do that without resenting others, even in a world that didn't always have the same values. I realized not only would I be accepted by friends while still being different, but most importantly I should just as much accept them without overly prosthelytizing or forcing them to line up with my personal values. 15ish years later, people are always asking me, "don't it bother you that your SO/parents/friends aren't vegan too?" (stuck with the vegetarianism and graduated to vegan about 5 years back). It doesn't at all. Maybe it's a huge stretch to say that's (at least partially) based on my favorite character growing up, but it really makes sense when you showcase it this way. Never really connected those dots before. Thanks!
Great analysis on the character! So many people look at her character in a shallow way and miss the fact that she's secretly smart and the deeper parts of her character like her hard childhood, that she didn't allow to harden her and how she helps her friends. I've been waiting for this, but this was WAY better than I thought! Thank you!!
Not just smart, she's a genius. She survived the streets when she was 14, she taught herself to play a guitar, she wrote songs, she has written 15 books and even without a formal education she learned to speak Frence and Italian. She's also good at reverse psychology and made Ross admit that Darwin's evolution is one of the possibilities not the ONLY possibility.
I’m like Phoebe,my mum might have killed herself (my dad won’t tell me) I’m awkward, sudden outburst of rage, lovable, quirky, weird clothes style now I need a Mike
Totally relate to Phoebe because I am the Phoebe in my group, always the odd one out, always been different, always felt like I was kind of a freak. Even though my friends accepted me I felt like they didn't accept me as much as they accepted everyone else. There was never a proper bond between me and the others even though I was the one always going the extra mile for them, bending over backwards for them and staying devotedly loyal to them. We need the Pheobes of the world... even though many people mock them and call them weird.
When I first watched this show, I thought Phoebe was an idiot and pointless. Then as I got older, I realized she had the best personality among the girls. Monica is kind of crazy and Rachel is a snob lol.
Yeah I wouldn’t want to be friends with Rachel. Monica and Phoebe can be annoying erratic but they’re both responsible, caring people who you could depend on.
@Liza Johnson Yep- and it's never addressed- by her or anyone else; they just all say it's his fault for saying the wrong name, when he only said it because she turned up unexpectedly. She's constantly given a pass for her spoilt behaviour, and apart from getting pregnant never has to live with the consequences of her own poor behaviour, while Ross isn't. It's only Aniston's performance that makes her bearable- otherwise she's an annoyingly selfish character.
@Liza Johnson but she never confessed anything? Literally everyone told her that it was a bad idea and she finally came to her senses when she saw him with Emily and just congratulated him. She never told him she loved him, she let him go. It was a big moment for her character because it was the first selfless thing she ever did. Ross WANTED her to be on the wedding regardless. Rachel was basically prepared to lose him to Emily forever, yet Ross said her name eventhough at the time, he didn't know Rachel was still in love with him. It was his fault.
The most heatbreaking episode of the show was the one where Phoebe tried to ride her new bike in front of all the other guys in order to prove them that she could ride it. I also liked the special bond she and Joey had. Joey was the only one who made it on time for her birthday dinner - it says a lot.
Ohh yeah! Clicked on this SO fast. Sad that all the characters have been covered now but looking forward to more character studies (please do Brooklyn 99!!). Sometimes phoebe bothered me for being a little mean spirited toward other characters, particularly in later seasons, but this video really puts it all into context Also, seeing the footage of Lisa Kudrow from season 1 always makes me so sad they didn’t stick with the curls. She literally looks like an angel.
Growing up, I've been hearing a lot of good stuffs about FRIENDS but never really got the interest to watch it . Until I saw that hilarious clip of Phoebe singing to Ross' bagpipes which led me to watch all 10 seasons of FRIENDS. I will forever love Phoebe Buffay 💛
The one thing I dislike are episodes based around her. Because of her lack of an important part of the plot she just goes around in her own separate things while the others are intertwined.
Watching Phoebe on TV taught me to love myself and she really made me more comfortable with who I am. Especially with the episode where she and Rachel go running. She doesn’t care what people think. And it’s because we only see them once. It doesn’t matter. We are ourselves and we don’t need to be some else for the people around us.
I’ve been waiting for this one.... Phoebe is my spirit animal. Oh, and Lisa Kudrow has said she partly based her character off of Jennifer Anniston and her love of crystals and all things woo-woo... I thought that was funny.
Phoebe is the first person who taught me how to laugh about the misery past and still have a great and unique life. Love her from the bottom of my heart 💜
She’s always been my favorite character. And even I never noticed how much of the “puppet master” she was on the show and the other characters’ major plot points and decisions.
I always imagined Phoebe as a witch who had magical adventures when the other friends weren't there, furthermore when I read the Harry Potter books I pictured Luna Lovegood as a younger Phoebe because the characters are similar
I was a weird kid, growing up and friends came out when I was nine and I thought phoebe was the coolest friend because she was eccentric. All the girls wanted to be Rachel, I wanted to be phoebe.
I feel like I'm the most like Phoebe out of all the Friends. I'm not that extreme, but I definitely don't hold back from self-expression -- I sing and dance when I feel like it (which is often) without worrying much about who's around. I have a tragic backstory (including when my mother killed herself in a pretty gruesome way), and I'm pretty much on my own... My world-view is more rooted in things like Consequentialism than karma, but I do have a very clear idea of what I believe. I try to be philanthropic, though, yeah, I could be doing better with that... I'm artistically focused, and thus far have kind of drifted through life. On the other hand, I don't have that strong friend group (although I wish I did). I'm also not as ok with not having clearly defined goals at 30, and I do struggle with bitterness sometimes. But! I do have a strong sense of self and self-esteem!
Phoebe is strange, weird, has this crazy personality, and has a very deep background story that you could peel and still there's more inside and that's why I love her
Phoebe is my favorite character no doubt. She is really underrated, but she is just so refreshing to the show! ❤️- one of the best characters I’ve ever seen.
My top three favorite funny moments of Friends are with Phoebe: 1.- "Pick up the sock Judy" 2.- When she looses her arm in WWI and goes "ohh no". 3.- When she starts singing along Ross's bagpipe, that always crack me up.
Thank you, for making this video for anyone who didn't realize Phoebe's value, and appreciate her role. For myself, Phoebe is, and forever will be my favourite on Friends. I have always loved her insights, advice, quirky personality, positive attitude, and so much more.
What a phenomenal breakdown of Phoebe. I have never thought of her that way and it’s amazing to see her ftom a different perspective. Great job guys keep the videos coming maybe you guys can do breakdowns for characters in the cast of new girl or how I Met your mother or Game of Thrones or Stranger Things, etc.
Thank you for this video. Phoebe has been my favorite character since the very 1st episode. Your video is the perfect explanation of why she is so amazing. She's incredibly funny, self confident and so incredibly kind even though she had the hardest life by far. And even though her sister is such a mean person, she even reaches out to her. I'm so happy that Phoebe got married in the end. She deserves to be loved and cherished (yes I know this is only a TV show, but I've learned a lot from Phoebe and I'm grateful for her character)
Phoebe has always been my favourite character, from the first episode, when she's "cleansing" Ross' aura, lol. The show would not have been nearly as hilarious (IMO) if it weren't for her. A favourite moment of her's, among thousands, is when she's yelling at her grandmother in *hell* for lying about her chocolate chip cookie recipe... *"You see, it is stuff like this which is why you're BURNING IN HELL!!"* DIED 😂 Another... When she "sings" along to Ross playing "Celebration" on the bagpipes. Even Jen couldn't stay in character during that, lol! I'll adore her forever (even named my previously homeless kitten Phoebe/Phoebes, lol), and Lisa Kudrow is absolutely the only actress I can imagine in this role. Her gestures, facial expressions, timing, everything... *ICONIC* ❤️✨💯 (& she also mastered Ursula!)
Phoebe is by far the best character on this show. Altruistic, creative, kind, deeply ethical and unabashed of her difference. I always admired and related to her the most.
Phoebe will forever remain my favorite character from Friends, she always knows how to break up fights between the other friends, and it feels like she is part of the audience just watching all the drama go down from a distance But then when it comes to meeting her true love (Mike) she made our hearts glow on her wedding day She is daring, bold, hilarious, beautiful, extraordinary, and above all unpredictable Even with her rough background and childhood, she never lets that outgrow the glowing child inside of her She always says the things that people in the audience are thinking (like when she confronts Ross about his love for Rachel, or when she helps Rachel realize her feelings for Ross)
Phoebe was the best character. I adored her as a child so much that I'd watch just about anything Lisa Kudrow was in that I had access to. It wasn't until recently that I realized how much of an impact she had on my youthful mind. I've pretty much become a Phoebe in my adulthood. 😂 Down to a "plucking things out of other's auras" type level. I'm pretty happy with that.
Phoebe reminds me that the world needs more of her. I've always been drawn to weird characters and I just started watching Friends. Who knew that I am the same age as that show? I feel so young yet so old but I don't know much of the world

Thanks!
nice reflection :)
This is almost what happened to me too. Vegetarian from age 10 and slowly turning to veganism.
Great analysis on the character! So many people look at her character in a shallow way and miss the fact that she's secretly smart and the deeper parts of her character like her hard childhood, that she didn't allow to harden her and how she helps her friends. I've been waiting for this, but this was WAY better than I thought! Thank you!!
She isn't secretly smart, just smart.
She is my favourite character. She's so eccentric, I fucking love it!
At last! Princess Consuela banana hammock! 😂
And her hubby, Crap Bag! 😂
The funniest thing is she even had no idea what banana hammock is until someone told her.
Was it just me that noticed bannana hammock was sort of like buffay hannigan???? Idk
In a world full of Kardashians let there be more Phoebes!!! 🤞🤞🤞
But idiot will still for plastic instead of books
I’m like Phoebe,my mum might have killed herself (my dad won’t tell me) I’m awkward, sudden outburst of rage, lovable, quirky, weird clothes style now I need a Mike
What is kardashians
🤩😍
Thank you !! Well said 🙌
Totally relate to Phoebe because I am the Phoebe in my group, always the odd one out, always been different, always felt like I was kind of a freak.
Phoebe is a life example about overcoming hardship and be a kind and amazing human being
That was actually more interesting than I thought it would be.
When I first watched this show, I thought Phoebe was an idiot and pointless. Then as I got older, I realized she had the best personality among the girls. Monica is kind of crazy and Rachel is a snob lol.
Plant Seeds Stay Woke phoebe has always been my favorite friend i love her sm
I always hate Rachel she was so annoying.
I always love pheobe
She’s the ‘wild card’. You def need her to introduce plot lines and bring fun. A utility character, one might say. She’s awesome.
The most heatbreaking episode of the show was the one where Phoebe tried to ride her new bike in front of all the other guys in order to prove them that she could ride it. I also liked the special bond she and Joey had. Joey was the only one who made it on time for her birthday dinner - it says a lot.
I LOVE PHOEBE - BEST FRIENDS CHARACTER EVER! :)
Joey was the best character. Phoebe was actually the worst.
Ok, thanks for the comment and please leave us alone.
Joey was good also Phoebe was good too
Chris Anders nah Chandler is the best character
Without her, there wouldn't be Gladys!!
Emily Montalvo what was gladys..i dont remember
Adarsh Bunny it was the creepy af 3D painting she had
Emily Montalvo Lol 😂❤️
and glynis
😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😂😃😆😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😁😀😊☺😹😸👱👧
I've always identified the most with Phoebe. This video helped me understand why.
If you relate to Pheobe, then you are one of my fav people:)
Did that come out as creepy?
Oh no, it was supposed to be wholesome
I have a friend who is EXACTLY like Phoebe. Needless to say, my life would be so bland without her.
In conclusion phoebe is the friend we all need and the strongest and best character on the show
Ohh yeah! Clicked on this SO fast. Sad that all the characters have been covered now but looking forward to more character studies (please do Brooklyn 99!!). Sometimes phoebe bothered me for being a little mean spirited toward other characters, particularly in later seasons, but this video really puts it all into context
Also, seeing the footage of Lisa Kudrow from season 1 always makes me so sad they didn’t stick with the curls. She literally looks like an angel.
Yes!! Brooklyn 99!!! Please!
Gina Buffay?? 🤔
You're a miserable being if you don't love Phoebe Buffay.
The one thing I dislike are episodes based around her. Because of her lack of an important part of the plot she just goes around in her own separate things while the others are intertwined.
Phoebe is best girl
@@ofdragonsdreamed8218 They're nice breaks from the typical main storylines of the show.
I am miserable being then
@@ilovebellatrix123 me too
Watching Phoebe on TV taught me to love myself and she really made me more comfortable with who I am. Especially with the episode where she and Rachel go running. She doesn’t care what people think. And it’s because we only see them once. It doesn’t matter. We are ourselves and we don’t need to be some else for the people around us.
Phoebe is the guardian angel, does a lot without looking for praise. She is cherished.
I’ve been waiting for this one.... Phoebe is my spirit animal. Oh, and Lisa Kudrow has said she partly based her character off of Jennifer Anniston and her love of crystals and all things woo-woo... I thought that was funny.
Wow, I didn't know that!!! That's very interesting (I mean that she partly based her character on Jennifer Anniston)
Lol it’s funny how Rachel is so uptight but Jennifer is so relaxed
Hahahah this is funny Bc phoebe is such an Aquarius and Jennifer is an Aquarius in real life
veronica jude oh word?
Lisa Kudrow is a Leo, the polar opposite of Aquarius, but very often a good match :D
I always identified with her way more than any of the other characters.
I love Phoebe. She was my favorite out of of all friends! She's so quirky, funny and charismatic. Friends would not be the same without Phoebe.
Phoebe is the first person who taught me how to laugh about the misery past and still have a great and unique life. Love her from the bottom of my heart 💜
At the beginning I thought it's another gossip channel, but it turns out this is one of the most insightful channels on YT. Thanks!
At last
All the F.R.I.E.N.D.S have been covered
Thanks for the videos
It means a lot
Why do people keep putting “F.R.I.E.N.D.S” when it stands for nothing?
Bread Master maybe because the logo (??) has those dots between the letters u know
I love how you describe Phoebe! She and Chandler are the reason why I have watched F.R.I.E.N.D.S like a million times. :)
She and chandler are my favorite💜 friends wouldn't be friends without her
Lisa is both an amazing person and an amazing actor...
She’s always been my favorite character. And even I never noticed how much of the “puppet master” she was on the show and the other characters’ major plot points and decisions.
Phoebe Buffay is my favorite person
Musa Umut Akdeniz Dogan seni hep burda görmek 😁
Yasssss PHOEBE IS ICONIC AND AMAZING
I always liked Phoebe because she's so funny and random... but I never realized the character had that much depth. Mind blown. Great video!
Phoebe is so like me. I love how she really doesn't care what anyone thinks and just kinda goes with it.
This was shockingly insightful.
Phoebe is wonderfully weird 😭 my favourite character ❤
arup her and chandler are my favourites
I'm Stoned right now and watching this is making me fell in love with phoebe
without Phoebe there are no Friends... I love her since episode one.
Tons of fans loved Phoebe. She brought heart and whimsy to the cast that was needed to balance out the show
I found out that Phoebe is the only reason I watched Friends... love her!
I always imagined Phoebe as a witch who had magical adventures when the other friends weren't there, furthermore when I read the Harry Potter books I pictured Luna Lovegood as a younger Phoebe because the characters are similar
"I wish I could, but I don't want to" is what made me fall in love with her.
I often feel Phoebe is underrated as just a ditzy, oddball blond. Thank you for this video pointint out her depth and complexity!
I was a weird kid, growing up and friends came out when I was nine and I thought phoebe was the coolest friend because she was eccentric. All the girls wanted to be Rachel, I wanted to be phoebe.
me too
Phoebe is like a younger, blonde version of Frankie, from Grace and Frankie.
True!
You seem like a really cool person! I'm sorry to hear about your mom though.
@@svendlundby3638 Aw, thanks!
@@Hakajin how did she die?
@@MustaWizard Well, um... I don't mind saying, but it's always kind of awkward, because people feel bad... But she set herself on fire in our carport.
@@Hakajin oh damn, how old were you?
Phoebe is strange, weird, has this crazy personality, and has a very deep background story that you could peel and still there's more inside
and that's why I love her
Phoebe is my favorite character no doubt. She is really underrated, but she is just so refreshing to the show! ❤️- one of the best characters I’ve ever seen.
My top three favorite funny moments of Friends are with Phoebe:
1.- "Pick up the sock Judy"
2.- When she looses her arm in WWI and goes "ohh no".
I can’t imagine Friends without the song Smelly Cat
Buffay, the vampire layer.
Phoebe is a Ravenclaw! Now I get it!
You guys are awesome.
she's literally luna lovegood
She's a hufflepuff
My brother's naming his new kitten Phoebe, after Smelly Cat.
What ARE they feeding him?
yltraviole it’s not his fault!
Jack Timothy I had a cat called Phoebe but she died :((
They won’t take him to the vet
Phoebe will forever remain my favorite character from Friends, she always knows how to break up fights between the other friends, and it feels like she is part of the audience just watching all the drama go down from a distance
But then when it comes to meeting her true love (Mike) she made our hearts glow on her wedding day
She is daring, bold, hilarious, beautiful, extraordinary, and above all unpredictable
Even with her rough background and childhood, she never lets that outgrow the glowing child inside of her
She always says the things that people in the audience are thinking (like when she confronts Ross about his love for Rachel, or when she helps Rachel realize her feelings for Ross)
This is a fantastic breakdown. Everything is spot on. I'm gonna watch friends with a whole new appreciation for her and her role.
Phoebe is my favorite. She's the best. She doesn't care what others say about her, and I wish I could be like her, too.
that was a very good documentary about my all time favorite friend's character. I wish I had a friend like Phoebe. Love her!
Phoebe is smart, caring and resilient. She always tries to see the bright side of people and situations. Forever my favorite
Honestly I love Phoebe so much, she taught me being the " weird" person is ok, she´s amazing, I wish I have her confidence tho.
When you love Friends so much you’ve watched every episode 12 times (and counting) and you’ve watched every TH-cam video about it.... 12 times
Sam I am yup
Phoebe was the best character. I adored her as a child so much that I'd watch just about anything Lisa Kudrow was in that I had access to. It wasn't until recently that I realized how much of an impact she had on my youthful mind. I've pretty much become a Phoebe in my adulthood. 😂 Down to a "plucking things out of other's auras" type level. I'm pretty happy with that.
WHO ELSE LIKE BEFORE WATCHING IT? WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!
I loved early seasons Phoebe the most. She was a sweet gentle soul that occasionally could snap back & it was really special
Phoebe reminds me that the world needs more of her. I've always been drawn to weird characters and I just started watching Friends. Who knew that I am the same age as that show? I feel so young yet so old but I don't know much of the world
