Great series. Heroes 6-7? After patches and expansions they were great i think more balanced fights we had all of the tournaments matches we had twice! Now there is Heroes 7.5 mod with 12 towns! 5 new so now with returning Tower, Sanctuary, Inferno, Temple (Dragon fly) , and a new one Xel a Forge like town.Conflux may return too may be they said. Also 11 creatures are in a town and 8 from it you can buy. Also new spells, 30 heroes per factions, learnable scrolls for Academy titan faction, and more spells in mage guilds for all factions because of more spells in general now in game. Secret abilities to the alternative possibility creatures in towns when you have 20 or more attack, def, magic etc with hero it will go on on to the creatures. Creatures needs not the same things one for Attack, one for 20 def or magic. Also better random maps similar to H3, more creatures banks as in H3, new battle maps, new terrain types, new skills for old and new units (returning more H3 units again, Thunderbird, dragon fly). Better AI, more new artifacts. Highest spells needs cooldown what you can lower down with other spells.

I love Heroes 5, especially with the expansions and while I know the original released in a fairly rough shape I still enjoyed it and never understood other peoples criticism. To me it's up there with 3 as my favorite and I would easily put 5 above 2.

I would even put 5 above 3. Why? Better balance, better campaign, better hero development, each town got its own bonus and backstory, +1 units upgrade to choose (with second add-on), necromancy allows to revive various units, not just skeles. And so on and so son... for me, 5>3.

@@StefaNonsense I try H2 as older gamer and since i have no nostalgia attached to it, i can maybe be more objective, unlike with H3.
I believe its a good game, it have somethings i like, like not having non-sense OP archangels like in H3, dragons should always be the best creature
(Angels should exist but having dragon as stronger creature is something that i like).
      But little preferences aside.
Its a strong game for its time, more simply than his succesor but really well crafted for its time, there are something i would like it to have like more skills for creatures for example phoenix could enjoy some resurrect or fire-shield
Some of the creatures line-ups seems more natural than in later heroes games thats a good thing for H2 in my opinion.
About the HEX grid vs Square grid i am not sure if its that bad either of this options. For an avg casual to semi-hardcore heroes player both options i believe are valid.
But there are things i like about every Homm game, like H4 music its clearly amazing and i dont know but the grass music there with the background of the adventure map just is mesmerizing its like really transfer me to world. That did not happen with any other homm game even if i enjoy the gameplay of the others more.

With the City Screens, they were one of my favorite aspects about Heroes 5, and I am really disappointed that Heroes 6 onwards seem to have abandoned the 3D view entirely. The Heroes 5 towns also addressed one minor bugbear I had with the series up to that point - namely, why - when armies attack a town - do they immediately beeline for the castle. Here, the devs made it so that, with each city, the Fort/Citadel/Castle is actually the main line of defense before entering the city proper.
With the Creatures, one thing the Tribes of the East expansion did that I really loved was the alternate upgrades for each unit, allowing you to sort of tweak your faction army to fit a certain playstyle within reason. Don't really get much use out of Master Gremlin's repair ability? Take the Gremlin Saboteur instead, where you can instead wreak havoc with your enemy's war machines (and yes, that includes catapults, which for me has made seemingly hopeless sieges by enemies on my wizard towns survivable). Don't like the Archmage's ranged attack plowing through your units? Use the Battle Mage instead, which has the ability to shield the units immediately around him from any friendly fire of his ranged attack. Don't really use the Horned Overseer's Explosion ability because it is too slow to act and get in position? The Horned Grunt can instead use a Leap to close large distances between its target automatically. The Succubus Misterss Chain Shot is useless because you're fighting other Inferno Factions? The Succubus Seducer's mind control ability still works. Your Pit Lords keep running out of mana? Instead of Familiars, upgrade your Imps to Vermin and have them steal mana, because it will then increase your Pit Lords' mana pool. Don't really make use of the Paladin's Lay Hands ability because you use him as a primarily offensive unit? The Champion's ability is much more suited to your needs, because it can even hit the enemy stack behind your initial target.
Also, one thing I like about Heroes 5 that wasn't mentioned in this video was the way skills were handled - in particular, each race having their own unique base skill, and that skill having an Ultimate buff if you spec your hero right. Granted, the base game (and I think Hammers of Fate) had the paths really bloody convoluted and strict, but Tribes of the East managed to remedy that problem. Speaking of Tribes of the East, I really liked the Adventure Map structure of the Memory Mentor - if you were trying to level your Hero up to get his class Ultimate, and you were faced with a level-up choice that went completely contrary to the skills or abilities you needed, you were pretty much screwed in the base game, but the Memory Mentor actually let you unlearn unwanted skills so you could get the chance to course-correct. Also, the requirements for each Ultimate were relaxed quite well - whereas in the base I think you had to use all five skill slots on your Hero with no deviation, in Tribes you only needed three specific Skills, which left you some room to grow elsewhere (or at least stopped the game from accidentally locking you out by providing irrelevant skills with bad level-up bonuses).

The skill wheel was both good and bad. The idea behind it and the way the skills interacted, with certain skill combinations unlocking further subskills, was awesome. The problem with it was how the only way you could get your big faction-specific skills was by selecting the exact same skills every time.

For whoever cares anymore: the hex grid was more of a tech decision than of game design. The sprites in the first 3 games (and 4 in a different way), were made of 2 or more square parts overlapping one another; as far as the computer is concerned, all sprite rendering code (back then) worked as a fixed grid and heroes had a custom rendering tech that wasn't a periodic grid, so that they could fit all possible army configs onto the screen - the hexes are drawn to & from some margins between each square cell.
So really the games always worked on a square grid, just one that didn't allowed all free cells to be used. Nowadays videogames have no real on-screen sprite limits nor do they need to be hard coded into a grid, because all 2D games are coded from a 3D environment, from around the time heroes 5 got made.

God the amount of time i spent with HOMM5 as a kid! And just the elusiveness it had for me back then cuz i didnt understand all of it fully. Stuff like the ultimate skills, getting that sweet sweet 8 piece dragon knight armor set, opening the campaign maps in map editor and wondering if Zehirs city being somewhere out of the map is meant to be some sort of a secret, sequence breaking missions like the 4th haven campaign one and just stacking billions of troops or cheesing my way into getting the teleport spell in the last haven mission and glitching the game by teleporting behind the infinite demon garrison to claim their city or getting to capture the stronghold town in the fourth necropolis missions with puppet master cheese....

Your video really made me think about it, and I must share it.
Heroes 5 is definitely the last good heroes game in the series, for me it can easly compete with 3 for the throne.
In my opinion the graphics are quite good for it's time. The art style can create some debate, but the way i see it is really fitting for a heroes game, not too serious, a bit dark sometimes but mostly like a grown-up fantasy tale. The biggest part is the town screens, those create atmosphere instantly, they look wondrous even today.( it is a shame how they cheap out on this in later games) The unit selection and the towns in general are more coherent than in heroes 3, and also look decent. What i mean by that is they are more believable as a faction, like dungeon having mostly dark elf units in 5 but in 3 they are a buch of random mythological creatures thrown together. It creates a more immersive fantasy world than 3 and also looking better not just because it is 3d.
In terms of features it is also ahead of 3 in many ways, like special abilities for differnt factions, better skill , fewer useless ones ect. The magic schools are a big deal also, making so much more sense and also more balanced than in 3 (not perfect of course).
You emphasised the change of hexagons to squares. I think its not black and white, squares have pros and cons over hexagons. While hexagons allow more tactical options they also restrict others, like blocking, and I am positive that there are others as well. Blocking the way for enemy units in heroes 3 is difficult when fighting neutral guardians, and all but impossible against other main armies. This makes shooters pretty much useless in those big fights, because there are so many angles for enemy units to reach them. Another thing that most likely convinced the devs to go for grid, is big units. In 2d big units occupie 2 hexes and because of the fixed persective it works visually. In 3d however it doesnt work in this way if you think about it, sure there can be a workaround but grid is just more natural in that case.
Anyway, it is just me overthinking it, great video, good thoughts and also entertaining!!

Random Map Generator was added to Homm in Armageddon's Blade, the 1st expansion for H3. H5: HoF was the second time it appeared in the series. As much as it's a core feature for most people, me included, it has never been part of the base package.

I am obviously aware you can move diagonally in H5 however going by that logic, if you were to move through the corners of a hex grid you'd have 12 possible directions! Something a fair few people don't seem to grasp, in life in general, is how much the optics of things tend to matter way more than the actual low-level reasoning. The PERCEPTION of switching to a square-grid based battle-map really mattered for most of us back in the day and diagonal movement on a square grid does not sit right with me, despite the precedent of chess. It's my fault for trying to make a stylistic nuanced point without straight up saying what I actually mean on the Internet, I have since modified my writing style.

    • @BlackeyeVuk
      @BlackeyeVuk 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@StefaNonsense No. I am talking about area of attacks.
In Homm5 and onward, you have square grid with 8 direction of attack. UNLIKE Homm 3, where you have 6.
It means positioning in Homm5 is much more important and there are less gimmicky walling units like in homm3.
Therefore, it is better and improvement over homm3.
The problem is, old habits die hard, and players on homm3 feel alienated and spiteful over tactical improvement homm5+ have.
Homm4 wanted to solve gimmicks with positional units, but failed because the UI was atrocious. Looked weird and stuff like that.
My point is, Homm5 have more options for positioning and attacking then homm3, I don't care if you or others do not like it. That is a fact.

I liked the video and while I agreed with a lot of points you raised I have two caveats.
    1) I have no problem with square tiles rather than hexagonal tiles when you can attack diagonally in a square tile.
    2) There is an unofficial mod called MMH5.5 that completely reworks the whole game. Apart from making all the campaigns run in widescreen there is a ton of improvements that makes HoMMV arguably the best Heroes game released. And the latest patch (RC17h) was just released in 2023.

    • @StefaNonsense
      @StefaNonsense  ปีที่แล้ว

Both are quite valid, my issue with your first point being that attacking diagonally isn't necessarily intuitive, at least I don't see it as such, despite my history of playing chess as a young'un - but this is purely my view on it. As for your second point, I do mention it towards the very end of the video. I have played it a tiny bit, but since posting this video, I pivoted my channel focus to mainly games from the end of the '90s and '00s - a few current indie titles notwithstanding - so I dunno if I'll get to even finish up the main Heroes series, let alone a mod. • @jakubmalinowski1474
    @jakubmalinowski1474 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

13:50 I don't understand why were you disappointed. In Heroes 3 Restoration of Erathia, there wasn't RMG either. It was added with SoD and was still very wacky if we compare it to Tribes of the East expansion RMG; only HoTa balanced templates and fixed numerous bugs. When Heroes 5 was out it was already known that there will be expansions to this game. This argument is really forced.
16:35 I disagree. On 1.0 I've managed to beat entire campaign on heroic difficulty. It was fairly imbalanced for many reasons. Necromancy being basically overpowered there, builds for Ultimate skills were hella strong for early gameplan and units had fairly overwhelming strength comparing to their strength in 3.1 for instance. Great example here is Water Elemental basically having reduced its spell power by half or Druid having significantly reduced lightning bolt damage. But I have to ask, because I'm just curious: Which game have never really needed balance changes? Because I played a lot of strategy games and basically every game Ive ever played have featured balance changes after 1.0 version.
Finishing this part of the video I really have to mention one more curiosity. After 1.0 a few scripts for Vanilla Campaign stopped working (for instance, mission 3 Dark Elves campaign - Inferno Heroes stopped running into your territory which was working before). So yeah, not always updates are fixing the game.
17:05 As far as I remember I've never experience a PC crash due to the game, but I know AI movement is rather sluggy. There are 2 reasons behind that. If you compare this game to older brother, Heroes 3, you can conclude, that this game was programmed at C language, which is by far the fastest for Windows. Also worth mentioning is the fact that older games took significantly less space. If you compare Heroes 3 and Europa Universallis 4, which both of those games were written in same programming language, you'll notice that EU4 is working way slower, just because of its enormousness towards production from 1999. Its natural consequence of making the game bigger causing AI turns being slower. Why am I mentioning those two games? Heroes 5 was written in Lua, which is scripted programming language. In this language Civilization V and VI were also written and HAVE similar issues. This language just doesn't seem to work well in too many AI calculations. For strict and basic commands this language works well, e.g. NPCs dont need that much processing power, since the amount of operations they have to do is way more limited.
Other reason behind that is engine. In last 15 years (can't imagine how fast this game got old already), PCs technology jumped into oblivion. But unfortunately, for Engines its not the case. Even now, new parts of the most popular games, like Witcher 3 and recently announced Witcher 4 will be produced at different engines. There are no significant in terms of speed difference at updates on engines, but mainly what changes is rendering speed and graphical details every update for proper engine. This game, you have to believe me, its optimised as much as it could be in terms of dynamics. In terms of AI turns there was so much potential to make things work faster, but it got wasted due to language limits.
11:42 (I'm just coming back towards this part, because you mentioned later, that battlefield is an issue) I am going to be really clear. Your only problem here is maths, that diagonal move costs 1.41 movement instead of 1 in every direction in hexagonal battlefield. Truthfully, replacing hexes to squares have many advantages. First to begin with is the fact that giant creatures have to be introduced. As far as in 2D two-hex units looks a little more natural, in 3D it would not be the case. Imagine rotation of cavalier on the 3D battlefield AND THEN turn back to the side of siding army. Size difference in troops in Heroes saga was always apparent. Even in heroes 1, Cavaliers and dragons were 2-hexes. The revolutionised third dimension was the only real reason to delete hexes.
Worth mentioning is the fact, the adventure map in heroes 3 is also in squares. I'm basically calling people shouting at heroes 5 being bad due to no-hex maps hypocrites, just because they spent more time on square map in heroes 3 adventure map. And trust me, in Heroes 3 there is way more mathematic calculations and problems with e.g. unfamous bugged diagonal, at competitive side of the game just because of adventure map there than it is apparent in Heroes 5. Movement points first of all here aren't actually shown in numbers. Obviously they cost constant amount but is a bit more simplified. Heroes 5 reduced strength of having multiple heroes significantly, addtional hero cost additional to standard 2500, +500 gold per hero you own. Levelling them up is way more important because even without spellbook, hero is also fighting and takes huge role at dealing the damage, especially on early game.
Coming back to 18:00. Combat is in my opinion in heroes 5, just magnificent. The reason why I am personally enjoying this part of the game than 3rd is because of the battlefield. Squares on the battlefield just are more tactical in terms of usage than hexes. Why? Since giant creatures are more likely to be stronger, their biggest disadvantage should be kityness. In heroes 3 kiting is super easy due to overpoweredness of Haste and Slow spells. Here, those spells aren't working this way. They make your units being more often at initiative bar, but not making your units any faster which balances those two spells perfectly. Another spell to balanced was resurrection, which also was balanced reducing health of raising creature by 10%. Another two were control spells like Town Portal and Dimension door. The first one is now obtainable only for level 20 hero (AWESOME CHANGE!) and is working as a spell without earth magic - very annoying in terms of online game phases, but very balancing either. Dimension door range was also reduced by like 80% and also requires level 15 hero which is again, awesome change. You can also tell more and more. In my opinion changes introduced to heroes 5 were just necesarry to be done in terms of balance. But many people doesn't seem to realise that.
Initiative as far as it seems to be unintuitive is very intuitive. Monster with 14 initiative will have always 2 moves over the unit with 7 initiative and if there is a modulo between integer numbers, every modulo turns the unit will have additional +1 move over slower creature.
Only downside that is not very nice about this game is that its SUPER beginner UNFRIENDLY. Entire Manual for v.3.0 of this game contains almost 300 pages of pure text. That is really a lot for a turn-based strategy game. I believe if you would like to write manual about any of the parts of Heroes introduced before, you would not contain that much information, ever. Not to mention there are still unfixed bugs/glitches/unintended interactions and mechanics in final Heroes 3 Shadow of Death that HoTa had to repair in numerous updates.
Ending my massive comment... Story aspect, I kinda agree. It would be a nicer experience having an extended timeline of Antagarich. But Ashan campaign wasn't that bad either. It added something fresh if we consider Heroes 3 having lore so tight (heroes 3 campaign being a continuation of heroes 2, Heroes 3 chronicles glueing up some lore questions from SoD and a few scenario motives). It was just hard to fit entire new part of the game into old lore.
I also love the aspect of cutscenes in Heroes V and I'm mad that they were removed in most recent part of Heroes VII.
Overall nice video, but I personally just don't buy the hate towards the Heroes V. I bought this game like few days after the premiere in Poland. And that was probably my best game I've ever bought. Considering that I also bought many other strategy games as well, which I'm a huge fan of the genre.

I agree with what you're saying but not with the context you're saying it in :) Nowadays, with the advent of Early Access and continued post-release development and updating/patching, it makes sense to be more lenient and patient with how games are released, within certain limits, this is something I made an entire video on - th-cam.com/video/mU0B7MIOKks/w-d-xo.html - but back then, the release version of the game totally was important and crucial; we had no idea there was a Frozen Throne coming after Warcraft 3, for instance, at least not in my corner of the world, we just played the vanilla Warcraft 3 as is. We assumed and hoped there would be an expansion coming, in the vein of Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal, but we had no inkling the game would indeed get one. Same with Diablo 2 and going even earlier, Starcraft. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I think the 3vs5 approach many take is not helpful. I think these games are complementary to each other and depending on my mood I might prefer 5 over 3. There things in 5 that are objectively better. Learning got transformed into Enlightment, which is objectively better. Some skills become subskills, which make them a lot more viable.
As for the art, It depends on my mood, Sometimes I prefer the fairy tale aspect of H 1-2, the more realistic and gritty 3 or the beautiful Warcraft style of 5.
To me Tribes of the East is one of the best games ever made and it is a shame it is so underrated.

Best Heroes of Might & Magic, hands down... and this from a player that started with the first game and played the original King's Bounty. The combat is significantly better than the combat in Heroes III as the abandonment hex grid allows for better unit sizing and obstacle arrangement, meaning you can block movement significantly easier for more tactical play. The ATB bar, the divorce of speed and movement stats, and the implementation of a hero turn for spells help to solve the other major flaw in Heroes III combat, namely the absolute supremacy of the speed stat. Add to that the amazing Town Screens and the operatic soundtrack and you have an absolute masterpiece.

Many fans prefer HOMM3 but I personally think HOMM5 is the best because it takes the foundation of H3 and expands on it. Each factions are more unique and have its own playstyle whereas in H3 only the Necro is truly unique. Also, the town design for HOMM5 is truly breathtaking. The only thing H3 has over H5 is the story.

12:35 I'm really curious how the proposed octagonal grid would work. You can't tile a plane with octagons (at least not in Euclidean space). Is the proposal to have a non-Euclidean grid - which could certainly be interesting for a certain kind of game, but probably really confusing and IMO far too complex for a game where that isn't the central gimmick. Or do you just allow gaps in the tiling - which if you tile octagons in the obvious way, is called the "truncated square tiling" because it's equivalent to a square tiling.

I played H5(with expansions) a couple of years ago and I find it very good. In fact I return to 5 and 3 whenever I've got the chance. What I really don't understand is why review a vanilla copy if H5 in 2021 if story is not the main attraction. I understand if this would be an academic research on how a game was on release, but I do believe this effort should be a holistic approach. Today a lot of great games are released in a sorry state in order to monetize it with dlc's. The same story was 15 years ago with expansions. Besides the story I don't understand why someone would play H5 vanilla in 2021, but I do congratulate you for your patience.
Anyway, I would like to point something about these retro reviews. I would find such videos much more interesting if in your effort you would include the mods and quality of life improvements for someone that would play the game in 2021 and not in 2006. For example I know about H5.5 but I never had time to play with this mod.

I rather like Heroes 5. I looks very good and plays rather closely to Heroes 3, so I don't get the hate from the fans that only swear by H3.
It's worth mentioning there is a huge mod called Might and Magic: Heroes 5.5 that rebalances many things as well as add a lot of content (including recreations of Heroes 3 heroes) so I think with both expansions and this mod, Heroes 5 reaches its full potential and becomes basically a modernized Heroes 3.
Edit: I see you mention the fan mod, so sorry for the unnecessary text wall. I understand what you mean about the grid, but I suppose since I don't really like Heroes 3 much (I don't like pre-rendered graphics) I never really noticed the grid difference. Heroes 5 is so close to the ultimate experience IMO. It's balanced better than 3 and I dig the music and wowified art style. It actually brings much more of that fairytale feel of heroes 3 to three dimensions than any other attempt at 3d heroes. The story was generic anyway, so replacing it with a slightly more generic story is passable. Dungeon redesign to edgy dark elves can be a dealbreaker for some, the original dungeon was heckin cool with all the troglodyte and minotaur heroes.
Alternative creature upgrade paths introduced in tribes of the east blew my mind when I was a kid. Necromancy is still OP, but at least it is nerfed out of the package, and inferno is buffed to resemble a viable faction to play. Town portal was nerfed as well, so that's cool. The skill wheel is rich in cool perks, and I feel like useless skills aren't as prevalent as in homm3. The square grid is not as deep movement wise, but creature skills make up for that lack of depth imo.

One can design any and all sorts of crazy shit in a sci-fi or fantasy setting, there are several multi-hex creatures in HOMM3 and they work sans issue. There are also plenty of 3D games that use hex grids and everything looks and works fine. Square grids are easier to code for.

I can't understand how a hex grid is superior to a square grid in the context of HOMM
If we take large creatures as an example, in the 3rd heroes they are not much different from ordinary creatures
At the same time, in the 5th heroes, large creatures noticeably stand out from the ordinary creatures in gameplay
They are greatly influenced by terrain and troop deployments, and the game often gives them touch-based abilities
Large creatures usually stand out in strength compared to ordinary creatures, but in return they pay with vulnerability and clumsiness
3rd hero grid gives very few tactical choices compared to the 5th heroes
And I mean choices that affect the course of the battle, not choosing which way to go just for the sake of that choice
Is it the fault of the hex or the 3rd heroes? I'm not sure
But even Songs of Conquest don't have a single compelling reason to use hex grid

  • @lizardemperorkorbac4281
    @lizardemperorkorbac4281 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would argue that 5 is better than 3 even.
    Let me prefix this by:
    1. I don't care much about the story
    2. I don't care that the grid is square base
    3. At this point I'm comparing most recent version of each game. Probably H3 release is superior to H5 release but after all patches and expansions I think H5 is better.
    So why is H5 better?
It is simply H3 but with most weaknesses improved on:
    1. Skill system
H3s skill system is bad with lots of useless and some overpowered skills
H5s skills are way better balanced and the distribution with mayor skills and perks is much better
    2. Overall balance and less cheese strats
Factions, creatures , spells and builds and unit compositions are balanced way better against each other.
    3. Creature Variety
In H5 creatures are way more distinct from each other, all having active and passive skills
Also the alternative Upgrades add variety and replayability, as well as strategic potential.
    4. Faction Variety
The factions are even more distinct from each other, having specific skills and gameplay mechanics.
    5. Caravans
I have to say though, as its the nature of things sprite graphics age way better than (especially early) polygon graphics, so even though H5 still looks ok, H3 just looks nicer.
Also the GUI could have been done better, a problem which is exascerbated by H5.5 which implements lots of features very poorly within the existing GUI.
My dream would be a remake of H5 in a new graphics engine with additional environmental assets for more variety, incorporating H5.5 features and a new GUI.
That would possibly perfection of the Heroes of Might and Magic gameplay formula.

    • @StefaNonsense
      @StefaNonsense  ปีที่แล้ว

I appreciate your points but I feel I simply have to point out your avatar is Korbac from HOMM3 :) As for H5.5 I played a bit of it and I have not found any GUI annoyances tbh, but I have not played very much of it because since making this video I've pivoted my channel more towards older games, from the '90s and '00s so I don't know if I'll ever get to covering H5.5, but who knows.

@@StefaNonsense Even though I think Heroes 5 is the better game, I still like H3 a lot. Maybe I should've pointed out as a flaw fits missing a playable Lizardman faction ;-)
I don't think there are "Annoyances" with the GUI in the base game, but I think it could have been a done a bit better. With 5.5 however I think there way more severe.
For example: You access new town management features via a spell. You have to cancel that spell to use town gate.
There is lots of places, where on feature is just accessable through the cancel button of another feature.
Then the starting bonus of a map is now another subset of the difficulty customization.
I mean you can access all features and they work, but I think lots of features placement within the UI doesn't make sense and is unintuitive. Lots of stuff is accessed from where you wouldn't necessarily expect it.
I don't know if that has to do with them being unable to code in new buttons within the existing UI, so they have to use cancel buttons, but then again I think some new buttons do exist.

But what's in my opinion is better in homm 5 is the builds diversity, the skillwheel is very fun to work with, every skill had a talents to it and homm3 had it much simpler and boring...you always get earth magic, air magic and armory and some skills logistics and many skills where useless, significantly worse then others when in homm5 you can make every skill work depending on faction. I think that homm3 had much better overall theme of like fairy tale but darker in some way, The graphics and soundtrack was much more climatic and some factions were just better, but homm5 had a bit better theme in some single aspects. Like dwarves are super cool, orcs are really orcs with some nomadic , Mongolian theme to it. Even if orcs aren't my favorite faction i can say they have the best vibe. I preferred old Tower over new academy but i can forgive it as a frosty scenery was required for dwarves... nothing csn beat homm3 Rampart and its chill vibe but Sylvan is also very cool. Dungeons i would say are two different equally Cool concepts. I also like how necromancer in homm 5 aren't truely evil like in homm3 they are just show as other side of a coin in balance between life and death. Homm5 is a great game in my opinion only slightly lacking in compression to homm3

It amazes me how little people mention the square grid as a major aspect. That was literally the thing that made me stop playing 5 and go back to 3. City screens were nice in 5, I am open to lore changes and 3D was a downgrade but I could stick with it if necessary. The combat was about as disappointing as in 4 for me. Which is to say very.

You hit the nail on the head with the story, lol. It's pretty generic, and disappointingly "childish" in many respects. Not terrible, but I also couldn't make myself care about any of the characters most of the time.
I also think, paradoxically, that they lost a lot when they went from text boxes to full voice acting. It's a lot more costly and time consuming to get across a full, rich, complex story with hiring voice actors and making animated scenes for everything than it is to write in a text box. I mean, imagine if they had done the Heroes 4 Emilia Nighthaven Order campaign with voice actors and animated cut scenes? It would have taken HOURS per map.
A second aspect that never quite worked for me, were the fully 3D town maps. I know a lot of people adore them, and I totally understand why, but I always liked clicking the individual dwellings to hire creatures or sometimes just look at my town screen, and with the wrap-around look of Heroes 5 towns, there's always one dwelling or building hidden from view, which I find unsatisfying. I guess what I really want are panorama shots. This also goes for the 3D adventure maps. I really didn't like having to rotate the map to look for treasure or new paths. It just felt like busywork.
I also was not a huge fan of the shift to a more exaggerated, "edgy"/"aggressive" artstyle like Warhammer (I love Warhammer, but it's a different universe, you know?). I think what I love about Heroes' style is how it evokes the traditional "storybook" or "fairytale" aesthetic and pulls it together into a cohesive world. Yes, many designs are kinda generic, but that's sorta the point? I like having Snow White dwarves and Robin Hood elves and Gandalf wizards and postcard fairies interacting together. It's... nice. I dunno, I just prefer it that way.
Lastly, I never quite got into the music. Don't get me wrong, I love the composer, but with Heroes V the main thing that tires me out about the soundtrack is that there is SO MUCH horn/brass. BWAAAAHM! all the time. It's very overpowering. And in a bizarre twist, when you're in a town and you go to recruit creatures, you're transported to a generic screen for all creatures that doesn't play the town music, but instead just plays a soft little tune that's common for all towns. It's weird.
One thing I will praise is how it handles the heroes though. It strikes a balance between the classic mode of the heroes being by the sideline, and them being able to fight like in Heroes 4, and that feels like the sweet spot.
    Thanks for this review!
