These guys is from my small hometown (Notodden) in Norway. I’m really proud that these guys made it that big back in the day. They’re still at it, and is still one of the most important and influential bands in the black metal in my opinion. The drummer (Kai AKA Trym Torson) is a good friend of mine, and a real dope tattoo artist. I trusted him to ink me up real good. Got two massive sleeves from the guy. -Anyways, it was cool to watch this reaction video, and see that it’s being appropriated.. BTW, you should really do “Phoenix” by Satyricon.

When I was in college, in ceramics class, we took turns with the music during lab hours, and when my day came I decided to play some Emperor. Everybody but like 2 people thought I was a lunatic. Man, I love Emperor.
Ihsahn: classiest black metal author in my opinion. Thinking that he was in his late teens/ early 20s when he wrote all the Emperor stuff is amazing and for such a young guy being able to write lyrics like those in a foreing language is mind blowing.

I was gutted when Emperor split, thought I would never see them, then they decided to do a few reunion shows every now and then Got to see them finally in 2014 in England, I waited 17 hours at the front of the barriers till they arrived. I stood there mouth open all the way through their set, it was like I was transfered to another place. I have seen so many bands live, but Emperor really blew me away, the BEST band i have ever seen live. Life complete, can die a happy man.
The beauty of Emperor is that Ihsahn could tell a story not just through lyrics but with the music itself. Their albums are best listened to as a whole because they are so deliberately arranged to create a journey and not just a single.
The dual between order and chaos makes tons of sense given Emperor/Ihsahn's past and what was happening in his personal life around the time that this album came out. Emperor had members involved in the string of church burnings in Norway and their first drummer was convicted of a murder in 1994. Here's a group of young kids, essentially, in their teens and early 20s, living a life that could only be described as extremely chaotic. Ihsahn was a LaVey style satanist and was active enough within that scene to be known by LaVey himself (I believe, I'm pulling this from memory of a book I read 10+ years ago) By 1997 when this album was released, Samoth had obviously been released from jail for his part in the arson, Bard Eithun was serving a prison sentence for the murder he had commited, and Ihsahn was now married. Order had become a part of the daily lives of this group that had lived the life of chaos for so long. I'm sure that created an internal struggle, especially for someone as introspective as Ihsahn and I think this song describes that struggle in an amazing way.
the album this is off of, Anthems To Welkin At Dusk, is a sort of concept album. This song is party of the greater overall concept of Anthems, (tracks 1 to 3) the followers ascendence to and unification with his master; The Emperor, possibly the very same who narrates I Am the Balck Wizards. (tracks 4 to 6) He, undergoes a series of trials to determine if he is worthy, They almost destroy him stripping him of his humanity piece by piece, he succeeds in all of these trails however. During track 8 he questions his original motive in enduring all of this, and realises that in simply taking up his master gauntlet his courage has already surppased him and it is the humanity he tried to deny which has given him this courage. Finally he returns, no more enlightened but knowing enough to known that he knows very little, as well as having the strenght to not need a higher power than himself to believe in. and this is why I'm single ha
They have had selected gigs after that kinda in a small tour format. Last time last year and this year celebrating 20th anniversary of Anthems to Welking at Dusk. I for example saw them play the whole album in Helsinki, Finland one month ago. It was a great gig!
Yes! Now I want to hear Windir - Journey to the End. Another masterpiece from Norway. And the founder of the band froze to death in the Norwegian mountains. Check it out. You won’t regret it.

Quorthon, the head behind the band, basically invented viking metal, the songs One Rode to Asa Bay or Shores in Flames would be my vote. Bathory was a big influence for Emperor, they even did a cover of Bathory in their first album.

Emperor is one of those bands i really prefer hearing live than the studio recordings (specially "In the Nightside Eclipse and Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk stuff). Sounds way more raw and less polished and symphonic (Ihsahns vocals are also more proeminent). My taste obviously.
I don't want to annoy you or anything, just pushing for you to do dome My Dying Bride. Awesome british doom metal. Give it a try. Songs like The Cry of Mankind, She Is the Dark, Catherine Blake, The Wreckage Of My Flesh, And My Father Left Forever, or any other really.

Great reaction. Emperor is one of my favorite bands, and this song is one of their best. Regarding lyrics: When he sings "Deep Green Dark Chaos", I think he means the northern light. They are very visible and beautiful up in northern Norway, where Ihsahn was born and grew up. It also makes sense that he follows the path of the Northern Light to the soaring cliffs where earth and sky intersect.
I may or may not have sent an overly epic reddit essay to you suggesting some anthems stuff, knew vin would like it and get it, knew Sori would at least appreciate it. The anthems stuff I find incredibly life affirming musically- like ihsahn's bitten onto life and refusing to let go until he wins...

I wonder if this song is alluding to the idea that order and chaos are not necessarily synonymous with good and bad but separate. The idea that order and chaos are basic human needs that create the neverending internal conflict described in the song. Because we all need order in our lives to live but we also need elements of uncertainty and chaos in order to feel alive. We just have to balance both to stay sane.

The ocean/sea with its daunting width and depth, simply stands for life itself. It may be quite calm, but it become raging and even deadly in an instant, with the waves representing the sudden obstacles life throws our way.For me ocean/sea stands for journey to the unknown✌
Remember Vektor's Recharging The Void?? David DiSanto, main composer, guitarist and vocalist is a HUGE fan of Emperor and Ihsahn has been a major influence in his playing and songwriting. When you check out more Emperor songs, go back to Recharging The Void and you'll hear the influence. PD: Immortal is another band that has influenced some of his more straightforward black metal riffs.

Given the average person weights something like 150lb, a ton would be 13 people :p Actually, Wacken sells out every year, roughly 80 thousand tickets although I don't know how that distributes across the 4 days of the festival. But Hellfest in France, I think it is bigger, like 60 thousand unique visitors per day this year. Metal festivals in Europe are huge, very diversified and definitely something to do for any metalhead. Wacken is called the Mecca of metal, meaning, you should go there once at least in your lifetime, if you like metal of course.

Great reaction. Emperor is one of my favorite bands, and this song is one of their best. Regarding lyrics: When he sings "Deep Green Dark Chaos", I think he means the northern light. They are very visible and beautiful up in northern Norway, where Ihsahn was born and grew up. It also makes sense that he follows the path of the Northern Light to the soaring cliffs where earth and sky intersect.

I wonder if this song is alluding to the idea that order and chaos are not necessarily synonymous with good and bad but separate. The idea that order and chaos are basic human needs that create the neverending internal conflict described in the song. Because we all need order in our lives to live but we also need elements of uncertainty and chaos in order to feel alive. We just have to balance both to stay sane.

Actually, Wacken sells out every year, roughly 80 thousand tickets although I don't know how that distributes across the 4 days of the festival. But Hellfest in France, I think it is bigger, like 60 thousand unique visitors per day this year.
Metal festivals in Europe are huge, very diversified and definitely something to do for any metalhead. Wacken is called the Mecca of metal, meaning, you should go there once at least in your lifetime, if you like metal of course.
