How Have Warhammer Dwarfs Changed? | Building Warhammer Armies

  • Warhammer has always had Dwarfs, and though they are as unyielding as the mountains they call home that doesn’t mean they haven’t changed and evolved over 40 years of history.
    In this history I explore the origins of Warhammer Dwarfs and the additions, alterations, and eliminations that have made them into the army they are today.

    13:44 Worth noting that the dwarfs in McDeath are a pretty on-the-nose parody of the 1984-85 UK miner's strike, with their leader Arka Zargul being a reference to Arthur Scargill. This might also be the origin of the trope of Warhammer dwarfs having Yorkshire accents.
    Also with the way WFRP 1e works mechanically, Dwarf slayers were an incredibly OP character career to play. Naked Dwarf Syndrome was a real headache for GMs. On a similar note, Hammerers were pretty undercosted in WFB3 for how good they were.

    • @ClydeMillerWynant
      @ClydeMillerWynant 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes the McDeath dwarfs were effectively on strike, barricaded into their mine and trying to defeat the orcs commanded by Ian 'McWrecker' McGregor. They were definitely looking to seize the means of production and overthrow the state which I guess makes McDeath Thatcher. Always liked it that the dwarfs could do the McDuff thing being not of woman born as they were, well, dwarfs.
      My dwarfs are Welsh, but otherwise very much in the tradition of Zargul's lot.

    My first encounter with Warhammer dwarfs was in White Dwarf 116, which included rules for dwarf mountaineers. This unit of dwarf scouts were represented by a single miniature - a dwarf in a bobble hat, armed with a blunderbuss and mounted on skis! They gained a bonus when skiing downhill and their unit could be equipped with the fearsome Yodel of Doom instead of a magical musical instrument.

    Thank you for referring my articles as one of the sources in the video's notes Jordan, very much appreciated! I'm quite sure I referred to your videos in my latest article on Dwarf Slayers as well, what's better than a nice feedback loop like that? Although certainly I owe more to your great contributions in uncovering the history of Warhammer with all the superb interviews you've done, that's prime source material right there!
    I've always loved Dwarfs, but up until recently my main passion was the Undead in their various forms, now with the ability to collect those beautiful old models the Dwarfs have become my main love and I've been lucky enough to collect a pretty formidable 4000pts force (6th ed points) of models mainly in good old honest metal. What a joy! I do still have more Undead as there's 3 Warhammer armies to collect for them all, but still. The Dwarfs just fit my character too well for me not to relate heavily with them, although my throng certainly doesn't have any newfangled beardling black powder weapons or Grungi forbid - steam engines! Or models sculpted after 2003. Only hand sculpted models preferrably cast in metal for the grumpy Rambling Longbeard. 😂

    Great video - The bearded ones are fantastic & I love 'em. Tolkien gets a lot of credit but, as I'm sure many here know, he was pretty good at stealing stuff (oops - I mean 'drawing on') the old Norse poems especially the Voluspa. A couple verses, translated into English, below has some familiar names
    Nyi and Nithi, | Northri and Suthri,
    Austri and Vestri, | Althjof, Dvalin,
    Nar and Nain, | Niping, Dain,
    Bifur, Bofur, | Bombur, Nori,
    An and Onar, | Óin, Mjothvitnir.
    Vigg and Gandalf | Vindalf, Thorin,
    Thror and Thrain | Thekk, Lit and Vit,
    Nyr and Nyrath,-- | now have I told--
    Regin and Rathsvith-- | the list aright.

    My favourite Citadel dwarf miniature would come from the misty days of pre-slotta.
    Haldir Ironblade is a simple model, he wears a tunic and cloak, he carries a sword. But his lines are exquisite, and he reminds me irresistibly of the dwarf Fenodyree from Alan Garner's novel, "The Weirdstone of Brisingamen"
    My second favourite is from the same era, Rantar One-Eye, a lady adventurer with a seriously kick-ass demeanour.
    Honourable mentions go to Odan and Olaf from the Bryan Ansell boxed set, whose names are always switched around in the ad copy. They were the first I ever owned, my mum bought them for me, so they occupy a special place in my heart.

    Tolkien might well have wanted to contrast Dwarves with Elves, thus the similarity, but he was also a professor of English. English is a silly, silly language. As far as I understand it, he thought the practice of sticking to "Dwarfen" archaic and frustrating. US publishers of The Hobbit apparently kept "correcting" the professors use of the English language with "Dwarf", and received many a frustrated letter from Tolkien in response.
    It befuddles me that the fantasy genre in general has seemingly "regressed" from using the much more linguistically pliable and sensible "Dwarven". Games Workshop titles like "Dwarfen holds", which you mentioned, make me want to bite my leg off.

    Very enjoyable video as ever. A few bones to pick and grudges to bear as is only fitting:
    It was great to see my old bolt thrower and bombard in the iconic war machines, but no Goblobber - Harrumph!
    I love the 'Very Upset Berserker' who doubled up as the second coming of Juggo Joriksonn, but you really ought to have used the original one from The Magnificent Sven.
    The change in what Imperial Dwarf means could have been noted.
    I know you showed a lot of pictures of Perry Dwarfs, but you only actually mentioned the Perrys with regard to the Dwarf King's Court and the reworked Gyrocopter. Aly Morrison and Colin Dixon dwarfs are great too, but there's only one (pair of) candidate(s) for top spot for me.
    Obviously I loved it regardless, but these things can't be allowed just to pass...

    I've always loved the Warhammer Dwarfs, and I've always kept Dwarfs: Stone and Steel close at hand, it's a brilliant sourcebook. I also always appreciated the extra effort they put into documenting Khazalid in their various sourcebooks, particularly funny since the language was meant to be much more secretive than the language of basically any other non-human race in the setting.
    Favourite Khazalid word: Dongliz. "The parts of a Dwarf's body that are impossible for him to scratch".

    I have my hands more than full with AoS, but the thing that has been pulling me towards ToW more than anything is the Dwarf release. For me there is probably nothing more pure fantasy, pure nostalgia than Dwarfs. They hit the vibe so damn well for Warhammer.

    if you do the elves for another building warhammer armies video, one of the authors sighted the broken sword as an influence for warhammer's elves than just middle earth's elves (there's even an elven character named imric and also the familiar word "witch sight")

    To be honest, back in the 90's, I wasn't a fan of most of the Dwarf range of mini's. Probably because I preferredthe style of the Rat-folk.(I know, put my name in the Book).
    But what I *did* enjoy was the Dwarflords story in Warhammer Monthly, the (mis)adventure of those 3 was always great.

    I love all of your videos. A quick point of clarification:
    Around 7:50ish you mention dwarfs loyal to the realms of men, or imperial dwarfs. Many people use imperial dwarfs like that (and I expect that this will be more prevalent with both the rerelease of the regiment of renown and your video), but imperial dwarfs are their own concept, relating to the dwarf empire, not the empire of man.

    • @Ethnarches
      @Ethnarches 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are indeed correct, although the concept of "Imperial Dwarfs" seemed to have been dropped after 3rd edition with the huge development leap to 4th edition that more or less established the modern Warhammer Fantasy setting in place.

      It's quite funny that the 3rd ed dwarfs that are most suitable for the modern usage of 'imperial dwarf' are the marauder ones which were sold as just dwarfs while the old imperial dwarfs don't have the empire look (and why would they of course). I often get the impression that gw don't know their dwarf history on this front themselves so it's no surprise if most players don't!

    • @Ethnarches
      @Ethnarches 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ClydeMillerWynant Indeed, didn't they just call the returning Marauder Dwarf Pikemen (or Spearmen?) "Imperial Dwarfs" in their Warhammer Community articles? As if it wasn't confusing enough already for anyone that's not an Oldhammer fanatic like some of us... :)

      @benediktreinartz1184 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I very much like, that you bring this topic up. I was confused by that fact for a long time... So I was also surprised, that GW themselves called the Marauder Dwarf Spearmen all of a sudden Imperial Dwarfs (anyway I'll need to stock up on those).
      Also isn't GW wrong with Prince Ulther's Dragon Company by stating "can be hired by Empire of Man armies, which is rooted in some of the older material from Warhammer Fantasy Battle, with Dwarf communities living and working in Imperial cities."? (I thought they were not originally hired by Empire of Man, but came from the conceptual Imperial Dwarfs with their own rich background story)

    • @ClydeMillerWynant
      @ClydeMillerWynant 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Ethnarches Yes they did and I find it grates though really I think we have to accept that they can change what they like and these changes have really happened quite some time ago. One thing that is perhaps worth bearing in mind with all this stuff is that when the old Citadel Perry Imperial Dwarfs were made the Empire hadn't really got it's style. The humans that Citadel were making as 'Men of the West'/Empire/Bretonnia mostly looked to be of the historical time period that Bretonnia ended up keeping and some of them had direct model equivalents in the Imperial Dwarfs range - not sure which came first, the dwarfs or the humans though I expect the latter. So some of the 'what fits as Empire (new usage 'Imperial') dwarfs' thing has its roots in the development of the Empire look itself as much as changes to the dwarfs.

    18:45 A 'sap' is a covered trench typically dug by a besieging force in order to get closer to the enemy fortifications while under cover from fire (whether to place siege engines in a more advantageous position or for a better starting point to undermine the walls), and the soldiers who do this are known as 'sappers'. Indeed, soldiers of the Royal Engineers at OR-1 and OR-2 on the pay scales continue to hold the rank of Sapper (Spr.) rather than Private (Pte.) or other Regiment/Corps specific title.

    Fun vid Jordan, but I was actually hoping to see a video about how they've changed PHYSICALLY! You see, I'm very confused about what is happening these days in the Old World. Although Dwarfs tend to have short skinny legs in some of the WFRP illustrations ( or even long like the Dwarf Cannon Crew from 1984 at 24:04 ), their WFB counterparts were always extremely stocky with hardly any knees to speak of, much influenced by the David Gallagher illustrations from the 90s forward.
    But then came the Duardin in Age of Sigmar, and all of a sudden they evolved KNEES! And were TALL. The Duardin character in Warhammer Quest Cursed City is easily taller than many Mordheim humans, and the half-naked Fyreslayers all look rangy to me with their longshanks!
    So what is GW selling now for the Old World? I see they are recasting many olde metal kits, which means dwarfs who are incredibly short, with bodies barely a centimeter square. But some of the new characters appear extremely tall and thin to me in photos. How will new dwarfs rank up with the older ones if I were to start collecting again?

    I just keep wondering what your cat is looking at. And thanks for clearing up the spelling! I'd always just assumed that Tolkien's was the standard and never looked it up for some reason... Since I'm thinking I'll be getting into The Old World, my first foray into Fantasy besides Vermintide, I'd really appreciate lore on the different holds and their looks. It's been hard to find much online.

    A wonderful history, Jordan, much in the way of lore was acquired! Since you brought it up, I'd be very curious about the presence of female dwarves...dwarfs, sorry!...in the Warhammer setting! Of all the stereotypical fantasy races, they seem the most overlooked, possibly due once more to the fact that Tolkien himself barely mentioned them?

  • @HBon111

    Even though Tolkien himself admitted his error, I wonder how we can conclusively say that 'dwarfs' is the "correct" plural form. Usually, nouns with the same ending would follow the same paradigm as 'dwarves'.
    roof -> rooves
    hoof -> hooves
    knife -> knives
    wife -> wives and so on...
    Maybe there's something fishy going on with the 'g/h' ending of the Old English 'dweorg' that missed the change compared to those other words. Or how there are tons of English words that do just fine without following that same rule. cliff -> cliffs, reef -> reefs.
    Interestingly, Tolkien used the Old English plural form as the inspiration of his in-universe name for Moria's halls 'Dwarrowdelf'. From dweorgas -> dwarrows (the assumed Modern English form). Or 'dwarrowdam' for a female dwarf. He actually lamented not using the "back-formed" singular 'Dwarrow' in the stead of dwarf.
    See "RING OF WORDS: TOLKIEN AND THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY.
    by PETER GILLIVER" p. 107.
    :S oh my, so confusing.
