Yes it’s a bit bland to watch after all the other ones these days but if it wasn’t for it there wouldn’t be any of the others to watch anyway.
Besides this is basically the only one that acts like a game of chess, the two fighters weighing up each little movement before moving to attack or defend themselves.

I've always felt like when Vader says "a presence i've not felt since..." he isn't full of rage, or hate or any negative emotion for that matter. He sounds like he found something he misses, or found a good feeling he hasn't felt in ages. Or a good memory that he remembers for a moment. It's very interesting you know, because the first thing you'd think is that Vader hates Obi-Wan but it deepens a lot when something positive is involved.. Idk tho, just a thought lmao

Metaphorically, obi wan says that vader killed anakin when he stormed the jedi temple and killed younglings. In actuallity, anakin was only trapped by vader and when obi wan came, tried anakin rise up but ultimately failed as only luke had the ability to do that.

I'll be real: None of Vader's lines even in Rogue One are anything I can imagine Hayden Christensen Anakin saying. But I chalk most of that up to a 20 year time gap during which Vader falls into deeper and deeper self-loathing.
So 19 years later after Vader has hunted down countless Jedi to build up to the very moment where he can finally prove to his old Master that he has always been the Master the Jedi Council never acknowledged? Yeah, I can see it.

I’ve always maintained the idea that Kenobi’s duel with Vader in Episode IV was Kenobi deliberately holding back: Vader desperately wanted a duel as they had on Mustafar, so he could seek the vindication of knowing he was the superior duellist, whilst Kenobi deliberately held back, buying time for Luke and denying Vader the opportunity to justify his rage, so Vader then keeps striking at Obi-Wan, trying so hard to get him to unleash his full force against him, and finally truly striking him down when Kenobi drops his guard, knowing his purpose is done and that Vader will never get the revenge he truly desires

I personally really like the contrast between Obi Wan and Anakin's final duel in Episode III compared to ANH. In ROTS, Obi Wan fails to kill Anakin, which leads to the Empire rising up and taking power. In ANH, Vader fails to kill Obi Wan, which leads to the fall of the Empire. Both ended up becoming more powerful than the other could imagine, even when being struck down. I like to think that Obi Wan's more passive nature and attitude towards violence stemmed from his failure on Mustifar. He new that his victory through combat ultimately amounted to nothing.

Before the announcement of the rematch I always thought it was interesting how careful vader was being with Obi wan in the original duel. The last time he tried to pull a move on Obi wan he got dismembered and burnt to a crisp. With the Kenobi series, if he squares off against vader there's got to be something about that duel that not only shapes Obi wan into old ben but also shapes vader into the calmer more calculated villain we see in a new hope.

The prequels then overdue the choreography to the point of looking rehearsed and fake (or ridiculous in the case of Yoda) except the one with Annie and Duku at the begining of Revenge of the Sith (the only prequel duel that is really any good.

I honestly like the original version of the duel vs the recent remake of it; it's not just showing Vader's power, but showing skill in a different way. Instead of using it through speed and power, they use skill in terms of patience, strategy, psychology and prudence. They're getting old, they're fighting in a narrow corridor, and they each are wary: Anakin's playing it safe, and Obi-Wan knows that while Vader is diminished, his strength in the Force and his physical strength are still greater than his own. Vader's trying to avoid making the same mistakes, and Obi-Wan's trying to find another way around him. This is the most psychological duel of the saga. Most fights are just about will, but this one is about how well they know each other.

Dave Filoni has to be 100% involved with the Kenobi story. If he’s not I really don’t have faith in it. Some of the other shows can manage maybe I guess but Kenobi has to be a story crafted by Filoni. Ahsoka and especially the episode Twilight of the Apprentice show us how successfully he can weave engaging new narratives that enhance the overall story without disrupting continuity. That’s a rare skill, and they NEED it for the Kenobi series. Plus he wrote thematically important duels for both prequels Obi-Wan and OT Obi-Wan through TCW and Rebels.the only person who could understand his headspace in between III and IV as much would be Lucas himself.

My only problem with a rematch between Vader and Obi-Wan in the Kenobi Series, is that it Absolutely cannot happen on Tatooine, if it happens on Tatooine then Vader will question why Obi-Wan Chose Tatooine, for his exile and Vader will quickly catch on that Obi-Wan is Protecting something or Someone Important the same way Maul did in Rebels, Obi-Wan needs a good reason for temporarily leaving Tatooine during his Exile to fight Vader because he wouldn't just leave Luke Defenseless for no reason unless it was a really good one, I'm just saying Vader and Obi-Wan's rematch in the show cannot happen on Tatooine, because if it did, Vader would come back and kill Obi-Wan if he didn't succeed the second time and he would most definitely capture Luke after figuring out he was the reason why Obi-Wan was there, and Vader would never stop hunting him.

If anyone is excited for the new Obi Wan Kenobi tv series, I would highly recommend the Legends book KENOBI. It’s a a slow paced western-type story, and while it lacks action, I think a lot may value the dissection of Kenobi’s character and the world of Tatooine. Personally hope the show draws some inspiration from the book☺️

This duel is one of those which is weirdly almost perfect. It's incredibly laid back by swordfight standards. There's little flash, there's no really fast swing's, and there's very little weight to the duel. The reasoning behind this is obvious from a production standpoint, but within universe it might seem hard to justify. But it's actually simple: the duel is a forgone conclusion. Obi wan is an old man by this stage, one who's spent nearly 20 years on a sandy hell of a planet, fighting off small bands of tuscan raiders and little else. Darth vader might not be in his prime either, and his stuff robot joints and heavy life support suit don't help him much. But obi wan was never the duelist anakin was, only his impeccable defense and a lucky piece of high ground let him win there previous encounter. At this stage of his life, in terrain where vader has every advantage, he hasn't a hope. And darth knows this. Sure, he's trying to kill obi wan. But he's also playing with him, in a similar way as obi wan is playing with vader. There is no rush, obi wan death will come. And so they fight, for old times sake as much as for victory over a hated foe.
But why almost perfect, I hear you ask? Well, as much as I like the tone of the duel, conveyed by the coreography quite well, said coreography is a bit shit. Yeah, obi wan probably pisses sand as much as he does urine, but that doesn't justify him fighting like one of the clockwork robot's that can draw a picture would if it was in a swamp to rust for a week and then dried off by throwing it into a bag of cement. And darth vader opens wider than church's doors on good friday with obi wand saber right in front of his face, a single movement away from splitting his skull open.

Even though it's a little controversial, I really like the "rhythm" between this scene and Luke and Kylo in the last jedi. I particularly love how the idea of the master's final lesson lines up, as they are both really saying, "ya, you can cut me down right now like you have wanted to for so long, and that my death will fulfill you no more than any other death has fulfilled you." With both of them disappearing into the force just a moment after the pupil had thought they finally reached the pinnacle and overshadowed them

If there is a fight between Vader and Obi wan, surely that will retcon the line in a new hope “When I last faced you I was but a learner, now I am the master”. Of course this refers to the battle of the heroes in episode III, if there was going to be a fight, it would have to be soon after the events of the revenge of the sith so the line still holds up. But not too soon, or else it wouldn’t be able to have the same emotional weight

I am convinced the only way to make the new show work, is for the duel to be a vision as Obi Wan comes to terms with his past. Anything else will just be fan service (that does not serve most fans) and would only ruin the story we have between the prequels and A New Hope. Don't get me wrong I love the idea of bring them both back and seeing a great duel, but I also loved the idea of a Han Solo movie and a trilogy about the future after the fall of the Empire. And while we got cool things in both, overall both served more to harm what we had than to expand and build anything off of it....which was often frustrating and served to only distract from the actual good parts.
I fear if they just have them meet up and duel to a draw it will not come off well, I'd rather watch the worst episode of the Mandalorian than a forced duel between Vader and Obi Wan that does not make much since in their stories, but only looks cool.

WAAAAyyy back in college, I took a class that dealt with mythology in filmmaking. It wasnt the typical "Find all of the Joseph Campbell steps in the movie of the week", half of the entire course was based around Star Wars OT (the PT finished up with Ep 3 dropping during that year, but beyond a quick nod to the fact that Palpatine's development from Senator to Emperor contained basically 0 development to his character or motivation, they were left out).
Two things that we covered that i didnt know and have rarely heard mentioned since was that stage direction for ANH only involved in-universe rules that lightsabers, when ignited, were extremely heavy and difficult to control. The physics of the blade itself was supposed to cause some king of opposing force against the direction the wielder was trying to swing it. This effect would also vary in strength and direction in response to changes in the movement speed of the blade so that slowing your swing to execute a precision block would result in the forces at work in response to the high energy blade increasing the momentum inversely related to the movement arresting force exerted by the user's hands on the hilt. The intended alignment/direction of the blade at the stopping point was also subject to specific physics which would react to force exerted to stop the blade at an advantageous point based on the specific alignment of the combatants' bodies at that moment with both an increase in torque together with sudden enhanced momentum such that an inexperienced user intending to execute a downward stroke with a planned stop a waist level would end up passing the intended endpoint after which the blade movement would make the overall stoke appear in a 'J' shape that if not cutting into his own knee, would pull him closer and off balance to his opponent.
I remember these instructions being part of a version of the script which fit into the development process soon after the decision to limit lightsaber combat to Force users. Its intent, which i suppose would have been expounded upon in later scenes like early Yoda training in ESB, was to explain the limited usage of lightsabers which had recently been common in the GFFA. I think i remember- but not clearly enough to bet my life- that one of the more critical alterations to development and then the actual editing priorities on ANH which get credit for saving the franchise, was that changes like the reduction in lightsaber use to Force users was not necessary to explain to the audience since they wouldnt have been aware of a change to the final product to begin with. Even so, the initial appearance of a lightsaber in ObiWans hut features Luke handling the blade with a noticeable amount of circular motion stemming from the tip of the blade (said to be where this alternative physics for lightsabers was stongest). His ability to light it up and move it without major injury was going to be used as an early definite sign of his potential talent. Lastly, though the idea perished before the final ANH edit, you can see a nod to it in ESB when Han cuts open the Tauntaun and seems to have to focus heavily on the blade tip as he does so, having some degree of difficulty (rather, clearly putting a lot of extra concentration into) accomplishing what ought to be a totally uncomplicated, two second slice. Its clearly the result of more than the bad weather. Have you ever heard this or did my head sneak back up my ass AGAIN?

I’m starting to warm up to the idea of a duel between Vader and Obi Wan taking place in between the two duels we know.
The way Vader and Obi Wan greet each other in the hallway hint that there is some unknown story between them.
For example, the two doesn’t comment on their different appearances which could hint that they have seen each other looking like that before (Vader in the suit and Obi Wan as old).
Secondly, Vader presumably thought Obi Wan to be dead prior to their meeting on the Death Star, something he had no reason to believe following their duel on Mustafar.
Thirdly, Obi Wan refers to Anakin as Darth which is really weird retroactively. It could hint that Anakin at one point insisted for Obi Wan that he was gone for good and therefore Anakin Skywalker no longer exist (like what he told Ahsoka).
This third duel could also tie in to Vader’s line to Luke in Return of the Jedi: ‘Obi Wan once thought as you do’ which wasn’t shown in Revenge of the Sith.

  • @zeta970
    @zeta970 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

In the originals, everything is dirty and old in a way that makes it feel real.
The prequels were mostly pretty good.
The sequels were definitely movies. Truly things that happened.
Star wars is a really interesting thing to me - you can really see the difference between the different sets of content. Sometimes Star Wars is dirty and old, sometimes it is shiny and George gets to play with the new cgi, and sometimes it really is soulless corporate pandering.
It seems like where someone is in their career is just as important as who they actually are. For example, the OT is to the prequels as Avatar the last airbender is to Legend of Korra.
Maybe once money is no obstacle, one doesn't have to think as hard about whether or not an idea is actually good or not.
Maybe fame goes to peoples' heads, and they begin to believe ALL their ideas are good.
Maybe once a franchise becomes valuable, the goals change.
...maybe I should go to bed

    • @dayshallcomeagain
      @dayshallcomeagain 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I think that's one of the reasons why a lot of people still don't like the prequels, including me somewhat. Like, I've learned to get over it and not be so hostile towards it, and even I admit now that, yeah they were really flawed, but they were still pretty good films. But I think the fact that the two trilogies, despite being set in the same universe, just felt so different from each other is what left a bitter taste in people's mouths.
The original trilogy, despite being sci-fi, was also a fantasy and a wild west story all at once. The prequels I feel, though they definitely kept to the sci-fi part of star wars, left out the fantasy and the wild west feel somewhat, which kind of took away from the experience of those who watched the original films first. It didn't help that the prequels were chock full of cg-i while most of the original films relied on actual sets rather than just computer generated backgrounds, so to them, it didn't feel very real, and I get that.
But at the same time, if we didn't have the prequels, we would have the sith, or Darth Maul, or Ahsoka Tano or Obi-wan's fantastic one liners("You need to go home and rethink your life" has to be one of my favorites, and my dad's too, which is kind of funny considering he doesn't even like the prequels all that much). Although I definitely agree that the prequels could use some minor tweaks here and there, I'm glad it exists. It expanded on the overall lore and story of star wars in great ways that you can't really ignore at this point. As for the sequel trilogy though, well, I'm just gonna end it here before I get into another ranting party.

My idea for the Kenobi series is that Obi Wan is kinda emotionally going down hill in the beginning because of his PTSD (while he's on Tatooine doing basically nothing all his life). Then suddenly he starts to hear Qui Gon's voice in his head. He kinda refuses it to believe at first until he get's attacked by a few people hunting him and the Qui Gon voice tells him what to do and it works. Qui Gon then sends him on a journey to become a force ghost.
This ends eventually in a sort of force vision of him and Vader on Death Star with Luke being there. But every time he fights something goes wrong. He can't beat Vader. So either he dies too quickly, or Luke dies. Everytime something goes wrong, the vision starts over and over again. Every time Obi Wan tries something new. At this point he learns his final and most important lesson to become a force ghost: he needs to accept that he will live on after death and that he can still help Luke after he dies. He needs to let go and let Vader kill him. This eventually changed him and made him the way he is.

The stifled movements from the fight is not just that Lucas wanted the idea of them to be heavy but partially because the prop lightsabers WERE very heavy. So it was partly because of artistic vision from Lucas and partly because of the actual weight and close quarter space they filmed in.
