I AM SO GLAD YOU ARE MAKING THIS SERIES!!! I really want to learn more about building and customizing keyboards, and look to your channel to learn more about parts, terms, models, etc. Based on this video I want to see if I can get a hold of a set like this.

please please please continue this series. After lots of research I recently ordered KAT profile caps and im so excited for them! It would've been a lot less work if there was another video just like this for KAT profile--could definitely help lots of people to have these videos per-profile to check out!

The first time I saw one of these MT3 keycap sets, I knew I wanted one and that was when I decided to take the dive into hobby DIY mechanical keyboards. I have been using the same hideous gaming keyboard for about 10 years now, and the first time I saw one of these sets I instantly fell in love with the look and knew I wanted something that could use them.
What I find interesting about MT3 is it actually looks _extremely similar_ (at least from my memory) to how the keycap profiles were on many older computer systems and keyboards back in the mid 80's-early 90's. Various IBM computers and keyboards from that era have very similar design philosophies, with lots of height, angled rows, and "deep dishes" for your fingers.
It is going to be a couple of weeks before I have everything I need to assemble my first DIY keyboard, but I think for a price of about $250, that's not terribly expensive considering the last time I bought a keyboard, it was this hideous gaming one I've been using for about a decade, and I spent about $200 for that. It will be very nice to have a fully customizable keyboard :). I just got a Keychron K8 Pro (I actually _need_ stuff like Page Up and Page Down) with Gateron Reds. I intend to lube all of them and do some work on the stabilizers as well, and also do all of the usual mods like foam and tape.
I just wanted to thank you and the handful of other keyboard enthusiasts who regularly make videos on these things. I appreciate the in-depth reviews and videos showing the assembly processes. At this point I probably know enough to have no issues assembling my first board, and making any changes to it that I desire.

I thought a lot about buying the keycaps as it is on the more expensive side and coming from the Philippines more costly to ship. But after watching this video I took the plunge and bought the infinity set. I have not regretted the expensive buy. It is super comfortable to type on and I do love the sound especially when I paired it with the GMMK TKL and holy panda switches. It is a joy to type on. I just wish Drop will make more colorful keycaps which I do like. The color choices they have are very limited on the MT3.

I purchased a set of BoW. They are awesome. They remind me of those Unix terminals back in the days.
One thing worth mentioning though is that since they’re so tall they tend to wobble a little more than other profiles. I have them on cherry Mx switches and I’m not sure if that’s a good idea. I probably should look for some more stable switches for them.

  • @Kila4nia

I have the black on white and I could not net be happier, she i right about less typos I like how these keys draw your fingers to the center of the cap and they have a nice pop sounds to them, im using them with akko rose switches linear 43g 3.5mm travel switch lubed with 3404 and 105 for the spring, Im placing another order of these asap in another color

  • @Kaysa56
    @Kaysa56 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I own a few set of MT3 keycaps, I got a lot of typo at first when I first put them on linier switches board,
but I'm doing better when I put them on tactile switches, as I lift my finger tactile switches has more of a distinct bump
that kinda bounce my fingers off to another key more precisely.
Compare to a linier switches, as I lift my fingers form keystroke,
I kinda hit the brim of the keycaps as my fingers try to travel to another key, that I makes more typos.
I do prefer to get my keycaps in PBT, in fact most if not all of my keycaps are in PBT,
Since they are more durable, more resist to shine and rarely become oily.
I don't understand why/how people are gravitate toward ABS keycaps,
they are more prone to shine, become oily and even sticky over time.
For manufacturer I might be able to see the point, because they can make more keycaps,
that are not gonna last long, so people have to buy more and more keycaps as the keys worn out,
that is not a very environment friendly approach, which is another reason that I prefer PBT to ABS.

I’ve already watched this video, but now that I’m actually considering buying an MT3 set, I had to revisit. The smoother texture is exactly what I’m looking for-PBT bothers me lol. The 3277 colorway has about one day left on Drop, and I’ve been eyeing the blank set so I can use it for any layout (planning to try it on an ortho). I just was unsure about the texture. This video helped sway me more in favor of them!

Since I bought 1980's DCS keycaps without knowing anything about keycap profiles, I was a bit confused when they arrived as they were loose and I had to work out the rows myself. Doing research, DCS seems rarely used, I never see people talk about it. I'm starting to think my DCS profile ISO board is a rare one now though lol. I'm late to this video, but I really enjoyed it, MT3 look very nice to be honest. Look forward to more in this series!

Thank you for all the great content. Your content pulled me into the hobby. Are you continuing these keycap profile videos? For example XDA seems to need a “flatter” keyboard, but it seems its a challenge to find a keyboard which is both flat, wireless and upgradeable. Installing them as I did on a Keychain v2, I lifted the front of the keyboard to flatten it out. Wondering if you’ve worked with XDA profile, couldn’t find a video though.

@@SwitchandClickOfficial also you technically could pronounce 'tty' as 'teletype'.. I guess. Not sure if it's a good idea :D
maybe you already know all of that, but /dev/tty (+ some numbers and letters, like /dev/tty1 or /dev/ttyS0) is the name of special files in some OSes (UNIX, Linux, BSD, - quite probably including OS X...), which are like the COM1, COM2, etc from Windows: if you read from them or write to them, you actually exchange data with devices connected to an ancient connection called "serial port". One of the oldest and most important devices that used that connections were so-called "teletypes", which are like typewriters; but if you press something on the keyboard (say, the A button), it will be sent to the computer over the serial connection, and the computer can send something back (pretty much whatever it wants), and only then that data will be finally printed. teletypes were later superseded with terminals that had a screen instead of paper. as a use case, you can make the computer to treat the input from the serial port as commands to be executed (say, "shutdown" to be turned off), which is how people (several at a time, as you can connect more then one teletype) used to interact with computers before they got their own screens (70s/80s).
so Matt3o was going for some super retro tech vibes with that name

I would try NP profile, I just put a set of NP keycaps on my board and they are flat with a bit more surface area than XDA. It took a hot minute to get used to them but I feel comfortable typing on these as much as I do with cherry and oem profile. If not more, the lack of falling into the gaps is a huge plus. I find OEM's in particular with its usually harder grittier PBT plastic construction to be really uncomfortable in those regards. Only thing flatter would be g20 profile. I like with NP profile the space bar is like a reversed cherry spacebar, super comfortable downward slope facing you.
I am using them with lubed linear switches, I think tactile would be a better match up for some people. I have choc caps on a little mixboard from thnikk, they are quite nice, not much different from NP in terms of surface area, only square rather then oblong. I could send you a comparison pic.

They should always include a set of all-blanks so we could use them despite language, layout and on ortholinear keebs.

Try DCS if you like Cherry and silent switches (thinnes will not be a problem)

Very nice video and explanation on the MT3 profile. However, it might not be the best option to demonstrate the typing sound on a NIZ board as the NIZ EC switches have their only unique sound signatures. Most people will be using these keycaps on a mechanical keyboard.

@@sirens367 It's not an aftermarket case. It's Niz's own aluminium case.

Drop has exclusive rights to this profile? God damn it... I wanted to just get a set of MT3 keycaps by akko for $70 at some point in the future... oh well. Guess I'll pay double money for a set of MT3's by drop. Maybe one day in the future this profile will be more accessible / cheaper.

I have no problems using sculpted keycaps on ortholinear keyboard.
