Interesting solution I found if you want this effect without having to possibly mess with the long term reliability of the shutter button. is just set it to full servo auto focus I will keep making micro adjustment which will keep the camera on. The issue with this is though is that the autofocus is very noticeable is it keeps bobbing, losing and regaining focus every 30 seconds; especially when face detect is on. this does work better for a scene without a face and lots of depth like say a table shot.
it's just really annoying that has to come to relying on it really obnoxious annoying autofocus or half pressing the shutter button, on this is a purely software restriction, surly someone that can hack the camera firmware to take this one restriction off

10 months later, how is the D3400 doing? Did you have a fan blowing to it to stop it from overheating?

Wow. I'll try this hack immediately. Can't believe no one left a like for this video yet. I just changed that.
Only one question: Does the "half-pressed shutter button" trick also work when the focus function is no longer assigned to that button? I'm using back button focus and continuous mode on all my cameras.
Do I have to reassign the focus function to the shutter button? In that case, is single mode sufficient?

I've had experience that when connected over HDMI, the Nikon D3500 wouldn't timeout. But recently, I've set it to Manual and left only focus on full time auto, and it HAS timed out. Does anyone here have any idea on as to why that would happen? What prevented live view from turning off before, that isn't preventing it in Manual. I'd actually like to use it in manual because I've had issues with the image flickering as the camera kept adjusting it's shutter speed and aperture.

There actually is a way of electronically switching off the 'Live View Power Off Timer' on the D3nnn series that have the accessory port (I think that excluded the D3500 that lost this but is good on the D3300/D3400). It also requires you (in menu) to Switch Off AF from the shutter (i.e. Half Press Does not AF). This is not an issue as a) you really don't want AF on all the time on the D3300 when videoing and b) you can move focus to the rear AF/AL button anyway. It goes like this. First get a cable release that fits the accessory socket. Nikon call these MC-DC2 Remote Cord. Much cheaper can be had on-line for about $10. Cut off the handset piece and throw it away. Keep the accessory plug with about 3"-4" of cable. Strip back the outer cover by around 1". That reveals 3 wires. One is 'ground', second is 'Shutter' and third is AF. (colours of wires vary). To make this work you need to join the AF wire to the Ground wire. Work out which is the right pair as follows. Strip a 1/4" of inner insulation off each wire to reveal copper. Switch the live view timer to 5 mins (menu). Join one pair of wires together. Switch on live view and wait at least 5 mins. If you have the wrong pair, Live View switches off automatically after 5 mins. If it doesn't, you have found the right pair! Joint the right pair permanently together (solder is best but twisting them together - strip a bit more inner insulation - is ok). Insulate the wires (heat shrink tube or insulation tape). Job done. Now all you have to do is take the wire 'dongle' out of the camera. Switch on live view and plug the dongle back in and live view will stay on until you switch the camera off or pull the dongle out again. To go really neat, instead of just fixing the wires together, wire a small 'push to make' switch between the wires. Then you don't have to remove the dongle but just switch off/on whenever you select live view. (One final word of caution. The third wire in the cable. Insulate this too because connecting the ground, AF and shutter wires together fires the shutter on Nikon cameras.) Enjoy your limitless Live View with an elegant hack (at your own risk of course).

It seems everyone likes the 4K Elgato capture stick, costs around $100. Is it worth the money? Are the cheap ones just as good, being that this is all digital? If anyone could recommend one to use with a D5500 (an upgraded, very similar camera to the D3400), that would be great. :) Thanks for the video, also. 🤞🌷
