Sick of the 30 Min Live View Time Limit on your Nikon D3xxx or D5xxx Camera?

  • Get past Nikon's entry level D3xxx and D5xxx series DSLR's 30 minute live view timer with this easy hack! In this video I will show you how to make an inexpensive dongle that will let you bypass your camera's 30 minute live view limitation. Use your camera for zoom calls, live streaming, etc.
    I have only tested this on the D3300...
    If you have a D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500 or D5600 let everyone know if this worked for you by leaving a comment below!
    I have personally used this with my D3300 streaming via OBS. I have yet to run into any issues. The camera only got lukewarm after an HOUR of steaming! In fact it actually gets warmer recording internally to the SD card. (camera temps and potential overheating will depend on ambient temperature of course)

    My goal is to make music for everyone to enjoy end of story.
    It is absolutely NOT to annoy you with advertising.
    This is a statement pulled right from TH-cam:
    "Ads may appear on your uploaded videos even if you haven’t monetized the videos yourself."
    " If your video contains content to which you don’t own all necessary rights, the rights holder may have chosen to place ads on it. TH-cam may also place ads on videos in channels not in the TH-cam Partner Program."
    As I'm not in the TH-cam partner program I have no ability to manually turn these ads off. This is essentially unsolicited promotion for these companies running the ads so please skip them as soon as that button pops up.

    Thank you so much for this. Wasted so much time on other videos that didn't address the main issue of the camera live view limitation problem. I followed all the instructions (I really recommend using the switch way - so much easier and practical in the long term) and have had this working for past week. Longest call so far was nearly 2 hours. No overheating issues to date. For info I'm using a D3200 with Sigma 10-20 lens for a bit of depth of field - you can probably pick both up for less than £250 (I had them and didn't think id ever get the use out of them again!) so plus cables, video card, dummy battery and switch you could get this setup for around £300ish which I think is amazing for a decent conferencing setup. Brilliant!

    • @Unsequestered

      Both are good options. If your room has a lot of echos though a lav mic is the better option so your voice doesn't have a lot of room sound.
      So in pro audio, broadcast, etc. they have a compressor set up on the music track that's sidechain from the dialog, this is a bit more advanced, but it allows the music to duck down in volume when you speak automatically.

    Awesome and really informative + easy to follow video! Quick question though since I'm about to start doing this myself; The dongle would use the same USB port used to connect to a capture card, right?

    • @Unsequestered
      @Unsequestered  ปีที่แล้ว

      The dongle uses the shutter release port on the camera.
      If you are connecting a capture card you'll do that with the HDMI out port on the camera.
      It's not a standard sized HDMI port so you'll need a mini HDMI to full size HDMI cable to go from the camera to your capture card. If it's an external capture card then you'll connect the card to the computer with USB.
      So the signal flow will go Camera HDMI out > Capture card HDMI in > Capture card usb out > Computer HDMI in.

    • @Unsequestered
      @Unsequestered  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Since this is tricking the camera into thinking the shutter is half pressed you can only manual focus. Sorry didn't include that in the video. I had assumed most people who were using the camera for video would also be using manual focus as autofocus on the Nikon DSLRs jumps and hunts like crazy making for distracting results.

    Hello friend i need this cable name and this port name? Please tell me 🙏 and how did you remove focus square on the screen during live veiw?

    • @Unsequestered
      @Unsequestered  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For video I definitely recommend turning autofocus off and using manual focus (the autofocus isn't great in live view anyway), that should solve the focus square issue. If it doesn't make sure you press the "info" button until you get a clean output. Also note that the focus square may appear on the camera screen, but it shouldn't appear over the HDMI output.
      The cable is linked in the description (not an affiliate link), but it called MC-DC2, it's a proprietary nikon port/cable, I'm assuming that's the name of the port as well as the name of the cable required.
      Hope that helps.

    On your live streaming sir, how far will it go? Can we use it for 2 hours of live streaming?

    • @Unsequestered
      @Unsequestered  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The longest I've used mine personally has been for 2.5 hours.
      Please bear in mind your results may vary depending on factors such as ambient temperature. Basically if it's hot where your using the camera it's probably going to overheat quicker. You could always point a small fan at the camera to keep it cool. I haven't had a need to do this though. (The temp where I'm using my D3300 is 21C (70F))
      The battery will die at some point too depending on what settings you're using and the age of the battery. For example if you have the LCD brightness cranked on the camera the battery will drain faster. You could also use one of those dummy battery power adapters that uses AC power. (Again results may vary, but I ran on battery for that entire 2.5 hours stream).

      Near the shutter button there is a button labeled "info" if you press that repeatedly it will cycle through the overlays. One of them will be a clean display (no text or icons showing). There will still be some icons showing on the back of the camera screen, but nothing bit the video feed over HDMI.

    • @Unsequestered
      @Unsequestered  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Unsequestered
      @Unsequestered  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      These cameras were never designed to work for long periods of time in live view so your results may vary depending on which model you have and the environment it is operating in. I can get my d3300 to stay in live view indefinitely, however I am using it in a very cool environment 20°c (68°f). If you can't lower the temperature of the environment the camera is in you can try a small battery powered fan and attach it to the back of the camera in some fashion. Not the most elegant solution, but it should squeeze out some extra time for you.
      You might be able to rig up something with a fan, similar to the one linked below, using an articulating arm with a clamp to position the fan blowing at the camera. The mount also lined below goes onto the cameras hotshoe (where you would attach a flash) so you would still be able to mount the camera to a tripod.
      As long as you can figure out something on the cheap I think it would be worth it. Just don't spend too much time or effort on rigging something up, because at that point it would be cheaper/easier to get a different camera that better suits your needs. Not to mention this isn't guaranteed to work. The camera could still overheat after an hour.
      3 Speed Mini USB fan: www.amazon.com/dp/B088LPY12X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apan_glt_fabc_VB0KWAAWCSC7R1667NGP?psc=1
      Articulating arm: www.amazon.com/dp/B08X3SSFVV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apan_glt_fabc_51C604C8AT2F2TAVTTQS
      These are just here for examples feel free to use stuff found around the house, or make something yourself.
      Again this isn't guaranteed to even work, but if your the type that likes to DIY stuff it might be fun to try.

    • @Unsequestered
      @Unsequestered  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you followed the instructions exactly, specially finding the correct wires to keep the shutter "half pressed" temperature could be an issue.
      The reason I called it hack is because it's a work around and these cameras weren't designed to work in this way. If the camera is in a really warm environment it could be shutting off to protect itself from overheating.
      That all being said I've run mine (I have 2 d3300's) for well over an hour. The ambient temp in the room wasn't any higher than 72°F 22°C
      Hope this helps.

    • @Unsequestered
      @Unsequestered  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is odd... Electronics can be a crap shoot, could be something as unlucky as your camera not having as good of contact with an internal heatsink or thermal paste that has a lousy application from the factory. Sorry you went through the trouble only to get an extra 8 mins.
      You could experiment by pointing a fan at the camera and seeing if the heat is indeed the issue. Not sure how practical that would be as long term solution, but at least you would know if that's the issue or not.
