Excellent! I actually bought D3500 last year and haven't used video much, but wanted to learn how to do it properly. Not many people explain the aspect of shutter speed, aperture and ISO for video settings like you did here. I originally thought that the camera would figure this all out for me when I am in video mode. Thank you.
I've used my D3400 as the main cam, and another camera as my alternate angle, and then synched them that way with a voice recorder picking up audio. A little complicated, but works well enough.
It’s kinda funny when you look at the comments and you can see straight away some of the questions proving they haven’t read the instruction manual, because cmon man some of those questions are beyond stupid...
Hello, I am happy to try to answer any questions, no matter how foolish they may seem to others. We all had to start somewhere and I want people to take their cameras out and take great pictures and videos.
Is there a way to lock focus permanently using remote (in video mode) while I am standing in front of the camera? I need it when recording video by myself.
ok, this is what I do. when i am setting up, i put a box where i am going to sit and focus the camera on it. then i switch the lens to manual. that way I know that the camera won't wander in and out of focus.the important thing is to keep the aperture fairly narrow. so i shoot manual, 1080x25fps, 1/60th second, f6.7 and 1000 ISO. move back, so that there is a reasonable depth of field, i make sure that the camera is 6-8 feet away.
Hello, Great work, very helpful. Question. I have a Atomos Ninja Star and am having trouble. Hook it up via HDMI turn on camera go to Life View turn on Ninja and life view clicks off. The camera is talking top the Ninja, turns rec on off and does record video but I can't see what I am recording on viewer. Tried all different sequences. camera on first then Ninja etc. Any thoughts? cheers
I got this one like six months ago but only like month ago I’m considering practice videography bit more since I kinda got into time lapses and slow motion videos and I want to learn how to do that
@@NikonD5200Channel Thank you. I was on budget and since I was mostly having stills in mind I paid no attention to all microphone situation. But I believe I don't particularly concentrate on that for now as I really want to explore timelapses. I actually did already couple videos but not all are done by D3400 because I have also FujiFilm AX650 that I experiment with for timelapses but I doubt I did any grace for quality as I'm still learning all the editing (iMovie on my iPhone because I couldn't find any free program for Windows that had all things I needed)
Just got this camera and I seriously need a class. Tried to take video and it appears I know nothing on how focus works during recording. I started recording and all was well. Till I zoomed in and out and the recording was all blurry. Ugh. Why does this have to be so difficult?
CatzEyes93 that’s one of the easiest parts as you zoom in rotate the zoom lense to adjust it to the mm your at, and read through the instruction manual, but actually do it because no one ever does and that’s why you will get confused, and once you know the basics on how to operate it, turns it to A aperture priority and then finally to manual did that help?
No, you cannot connect an external Mic. You have two choices - either rely in the internal Mic, which isn't too bad, or use an external recorder. The advantage of that is that you can get the mic much closer to the sound source. You don't have to spend a lot on a recorder , you can get an app on your mobile phone that will do it. Then you just synchronise the video and sound in the editing software.
thanks for this video, are you planning on creating a video on how to shoot videos at night? for the life of me, I cannot get any good quality night mode, it's all grainy.
@@NikonD5200Channel thanks, I've got the night photography completely figured out, my question was about VIDEO, I played with all sorts of settings but cannot get any good result.
Hey, sorry about that, I misunderstood. I am not going to be doing a video anytime soon, but this video here will give you some pointers. good luck ! www.izzyvideo.com/low-light-video/ Also, I would not shoot on night mode for video. shoot on Manual if you can. Check out the scene first by trying it on P mode, and then switch to Manual and make any changes you need ( that are mentioned in this video).
@@NikonD5200Channel thanks a lot, I will experiment further with the settings. I have a prime lens that opens up to f1.8, it's definitely allowing more light in.
There is no particular way to do this. the camera will only record a maximum of 29 minutes or 4GB on the card. At 1080, 25 frames per second it records about 170mb per minute. if you know how much space you have on your card, you could work it out from that. when the space on the card is less than the maximum recording time, the time available will show when you are recording.
Hi there, I am trying to do timelapse with my Nikon D3400. You talked about it, in the beginning, could you please elaborate a bit more. How to do it? I had Nikon D90 the intervalometer for that one doesnt work for Nikon D3400.
There is no time-lapse function on the D3400. You have two options: the first is to shoot your videos in Miniature Effects. This shoots the video as a time-lapse video and puts it together in the camera to play straight away. However it keeps the miniature effect setting of blurring around the edges. This may not be a problem if your subject is in the middle of the frame, but if you are shooting a landscape and want to catch the moving clouds etc, it isn’t going to work. To do this, turn the mode dial round to Effects, then turn the rotate dial until you get the Miniature Effects option and then press the video start button. By far the best way is to get an intervalometer. This plugs into your D3400 and allows you to operate the shutter remotely. It also allows you to fire the shutter a certain number of times at set intervals. They are not expensive, just make sure they will operate a Nikon D3400. Here is one, for example: www.amazon.co.uk/Andoer®-Viltrox-Intervalometer-Control-Shutter-As-Shown/dp/B00N3JQW7U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1510569209&sr=8-2&keywords=Time+Lapse+Intervalometer++nikon When shooting, you should be on manual mode and also manual focus - to prevent the camera changing the exposure or refocusing during the shoot. Ideally you should try to stay out of live view as this will drain the battery faster. You are going to shoot 25-30 frames for each second of video, so the battery must be fully charged - if you are shooting 15 seconds of video, you will need to take around 450 frames possibly over a period of over an hour. The time between each frame depends on what you are shooting, but here is a rough guide: Clouds moving very slowly, interval of 10 seconds. Clouds moving normally: interval of 5 seconds. Clouds moving very fast: interval of 3 seconds. People walking down the street: interval of 2 seconds. Path of the sun on a clear day, interval of 30 seconds. Night landscapes, stars, moon, etc.: interval of 20 to 30 seconds. As you can see this is a big commitment, so it is a good idea to do some tests first and plan well. it is worth making sure that you have a large memory card and plenty of room on your computer. The software recommended at the moment is Picasa from Google, which you can download for free (please be careful where you get it from). I don’t have it myself, but this video shows you how simple it is to use. th-cam.com/video/ZuI9dep0dGo/w-d-xo.html I hope that helps. let me know how it works for you!

Actually, I did not ever try to discover anything from the effects dial in the camera. Now not just I found about Miniature Effect but also all other effects. It depends on how much you know about photography and what you want to photograph. A good basic DSLR camera, like this D3400 or a Canon 1300d/T6 would be a good start if you know the basics. They have the advantage of you being able to change lenses and use off camera flash to widen your experience. With those you can shoot almost anything. If you are a beginner, you might consider a good bridge camera, with a zoom lens. this would allow you to practice and then, once you have decided on what you want to do, you can upgrade accordingly.
