The CCD sensor is to die for. You dont have to do much editing of your images because the colors are so vivid. CMOS sensors have more dynamic range but need a lot of editing. I wouldnt be surprised when there will a run on these old CCDs cameras once the MegaPixels race is over and photographers want fidelity in colors rather than just sharpness. And these CCDs cameras become more desired. Hate to see people junking thses at the Thrift Shops.
It's a nice camera for daytime shots in lots of light. 10 MP. Funky metering, dial in -0.3 EV for matrix to prevent blowing highlights. And keep in mind it's almost 16 years old, ancient by digital camera standards. I loved mine and shot it until the shutter broke several years ago. Had far, far better cameras by then, but liked going back to the D80 occasionally.

Anyone who has ever owned a DSLR should know about the quality of these cameras (and any like them from the era), whether it be Nikon or Canon. You could go even older and grab a Nikon D40 and shoot magazine cover quality photos without a problem. Ansel Adams took one of the most iconic photos of all-time (not an exaggeration), the Monolith, The Face of the Half Dome, in 1927 with a "Brownie"...an antiquated film camera with almost zero functions. And by the way, the Nikon D80 has a 10.2 megapixel DX format sensor. In many ways it's superior to the 16-20mp cameras that followed, like the D3100 - at least when it comes to shooting still photography. And in the right hands can take significantly higher quality photos that ANY iPhone. All megapixels are not created equal. Adam's comment about "the images not being breathtaking" and "not blowing it up really big" show how little he understands, or at least is able to convey, about photography. These cameras were absolutely used by professional photographers to take images that were blown up to the size of billboards. Photography is and always has been about the ability of the photographer, not the quality of the camera. Sure, cameras have features that help take quality photos but I assure anyone reading this that the Nikon D80 (or the Canon Rebel XT, or an iPhone 8) can take BREATHTAKING photos in the hands of the right person. And they all can take really crappy photos too. Here is a link to a photo I took May 9th, 2009, at night, in the rain, at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Because it was raining I left my full frame camera at home and just brought a Nikon D60, another 10.2mp camera from around the same era as the D80. drive.google.com/file/d/1-Xqx4Z8beDWMyovtsLy8f7w-gBQJM3PS/view?usp=sharing The D60 was an entry level consumer camera, the D80 was a "first" generation DLSR from a year or two before that I'd call a hobbyist camera. The D200 or D300 were a step up from the D80 and the Professional level cameras from this era would have been the D2 and the later D3 series cameras.
I’ve had my D80 since 2006, bought it new. It worked great back in the day but sadly I put it up for quite a few years. Jump to 2022 and I’ve broke this bad boy out again, yes it’s outdated, especially the pixel size. The battery charged up great and stuck a 4GB card in and it fired right up. The lens I have is a Nikon DX 18-200 G and it still works great too. Might see if I can find a 50 1.8 G for something smaller.
