IMO the ethics of sponsorships are fundamentally different for reviewers. By making ads personal and about products they would usually review, the line between ad and review gets blurred. Regardless of the actual opinion of the reviewer, the impression is that they can be bought and are not trustworthy.

Firstly, you didn't address the speeding, you should've taken the video down and given DJI's money back. That is the biggest issue here and I'm disappointed you don't get that. Secondly, a fully sponsored video is just an ad. An ad in your feed has nothing in it for the viewer, because anything you say is worthless as it was paid for. Glad you're not going to do it again.

Im a fan of the show, i didnt finish the video but i can tell you the biggest ick for me was it not being disclosed upfront that that was a sponsored ad. finding out for myself a minute or two in felt like a breach of our social contract somehow. Im sure there was a disclosure somewhere in the middle of the video maybe but by that time i was already disinterested bc it sounded like an editorialised 'review' with sponsored money and all credibility left the room right then and there. I think the saliency of this brand is suffering from a scaling problem. just lately a lot of stuff dont feel 'on-brand' as it were. which is sad
When thumb nails and titles are not representative of the video but to ensure that viewers click on the content, such audience reactions are not strange to see. We are not numbers and statistics but humans and appreciate honesty.

FYI I’ve been a subscriber to you for over 10 years and unsubbed you this week not because of the DJI sponsorship but the fact that you 3Xd the speed limit in a school zone. I waited to see your explanation for this and maybe follow back, but frankly you brushed it off as if it wasn’t a big deal, and don’t think you’re genuinely sorry. Just regretful you got caught / didn’t cut the video. The Panels controversy was whatever, but people shouldn’t treat reckless speeding as if it’s nothing and that’s how you came off here. Will not be resubbing for now.
I think the main thing that upset me with the DJO video was the title - it was baity and aside from a review it felt like it didn't add anything to a viewing experience but it sounds like they all went into it with good intentions of a product they like
There seems like an easy way around this.. just have sponsors outside of tech (or things you often review, like cars). That doesn’t mean having random sponsors, but just use sponsors for products you like in your personal life that aren’t tech. Favorite coffee? Something like that. I don’t think you can have sponsors in the same space as what you review. It blurs the lines for people believing anything you’re saying (even if it’s genuine praise/true).
Guys you should just step up your game on the sponsoring topic; Stop assuming your public is dumb and no one will notice… this podcast itself has always been evidently a long piece of add but at least by times is entertaining. Don’t underestimate your public or it will get back at you, like this time…
it's just the execution, was very subpar. There's nothing wrong with creating a wallpaper app, nothing wrong with making a sponsored video, but the whole thing just felt wrong, and that's coming from a 10yr+ subscriber. We live in a time where celebrities aren't allowed to make any mistake at all. Instead of making every major decisions on your own (or with your relatively young/inexperienced team), MAYBE it's time to hire some real veteran to handle the business side of things. There's good reason Linus stepped down as CEO last year
Here for the chat about the midgate on a Maverick. I still love my 2023 Maverick but that's one thing I wish it had. Also, Ellis: I am using my bed so much that I also had to get rails and a roof box above the bed because I ran out of room!
All the comments defending Marques for felony speeding in a school zone are actually the problem in society. Imagine if you had your child there and they got hit by someone going 96MPH in a 35. I bet you would feel different.
It's dissapointing you chose not to address the fact that you broke the law and potentially put children in danger. You gave the fallout from Panels more than this. One statement on X is not sufficient.
Honestly I loved watching MKBHDs videos. There were times where I just scrolled through his videos and watched a one from like 10 years ago just cause I felt like it. I always took everything Marques for my heart, trusted him and it helped me a lot to get confident in speaking English. But after Panels, a fully advertised video and MKBHD literally driving 60 miles per hour over the limit, I just don’t really trust him anymore and I’m thinking about unsubscribing to everything related to MKBHD. I mean I don’t wanna hate here just wanted to share my honest thoughts 😢
I believe we all have very high expectations for Marques and the team that works with him. There are plenty of youtubers who do reckless or unethical things and there audience either doesn't care or they're used to it and possibly desensitized, i.e logan paul. For me I continue watching let's say a reviewer or a current events commentator like Philly d because I think they have good takes or ethics. I look at these guys after years of watching and they've built trust so when they slip it can be surprising. But when you make a mistake like the speeding or people calling you out for the price of the wallpaper app you should own that and at least respond to that criticism and not divert to "people hated the sponsored video", this makes it feel like you are hiding the truth and it continues to lower our trust in you and your content. You also cut the driving clip out of the spoco and said "it didn't add anything to the video".
Renault Le Car was US 's Renault 5. That's amazing, did not know that. They just recently announced the EV version of the iconic hatchback from the 1970s.
What more do you want from the guy? He apologised on X, and doesn't want to keep bringing it up, so he discussed another issue people had at the time: Sponsored videos. People just dont want to move on
I don't really care about the sponsored video-I'm just not a fan and hope there won't be any more in the future. The speeding incident is absolutely a big failure, and I hope he learns from it and shows some accountability. That said, it's astonishing how quick people are to cancel someone on the internet, everyone is just a moralizer. If seeing someone fail genuinely makes you feel better, that’s just sad. It reflects a lack of joy or purpose in your life.
it makes people feel morally superior to jump on a bandwagon of hate. which is ironic, because then whoever receives the hate gets about 100x more hate than is deserved, which I would not call moral. You said it great, people need more joy and purpose in their life and they won't waste their time being jerks on the internet and thinking it's some moral high ground.
Calling out a crime which was tried to be covered is different than trying to cancel someone. Imma still watch his videos but saying he fucked up is fine
1. It’s your channel, review whatever you want. If 3 people unsubscribe, oh well. If after this long people don’t know they can trust your opinion on things, it’s up to them. 2. Speeding wasn’t wise and never is. There. Moving on
The main issue with the infinate scrolling feature is that it uses the same gesture used to exit full screen. Until now In order to exit full screen you swiped up, now that takes you to another video. I made thst mistake several times already, its super annoying. And needing to manually select to exit full screen is also very annoying. I'd rather have that feature then the mew one. Also, inflate scrolling on long form videos is completely unneeded. Shorts are different.
Well on Amazon it’s $150-250 like he said 16:00 and I agree, a more expensive one will last longer but if you want a working one, $159 is your cheapest on Amazon
Nothing wrong with you taking a sponsored video. How to do it properly is of course a tricky thing to balance out and maintain your trust with a very invested and trusting audience , but this conversation about sponsor conversation wouldn’t be happening if you didn’t do the ‘stupid/wreckless’ thing. If there’s one lesson you need to learn is that your supportive audience looks up to you in some ways and have strong opinions on what makes a good or responsible human being. If you violate that by deciding to make decisions that may have some serious consequences on people’s lives, even if for fan, you will get burned for it. People like you, people root for you, don’t take that for granted. Be your self but also realise that unfortunately you put yourself in a position where by being yourself will be noticed and judged, rightfully.
I’m also worried if your sponsors will want to be associated with videos that are clearly very controversial. We wish you the best, and part of that is ensuring that whatever actions you take don’t unnecessarily harm your brand, both for the audience and any partnership that comes your way.
Apart from all the (mostly well deserved) critisim about speeding and that ridiculous video that he is trying to whitewash by pretending he was upfront about what it was (an advertisement) from the beginning... I'm only 5 minutes in and it looks like Ellis isn't going to go on some nonsensical rant that he thinks is the most insightful thing ever said while he bathes in the beauty of his magistic voice (to him - it isn't, his voice is awfu). I hope this continues but I have a feeling I will be disappointed. He's just been so annoying these past few.
Don't take the backlash too personally. I watched most of the DJI video and it was made pretty clear it was a sponsored video from the beginning. I honestly stopped watching about halfway through since I have no interest in an action camera and I got a little bored. But wow, I was super confused at the backlash when I read the comments. I think a lot of people on the internet are just looking for something to hate, and it makes them feel like they're part of something morally superior when they jump on a bandwagon telling someone else that they are wrong... Which is ironic, because there's nothing morally superior about a mass group tearing someone down 100x more than they deserve.
1. I think the speeding thing deserves more than one sentence 2. I see your point regarding sponsored videos being not frequent. However, you always claimed to never review something from a company that sponsored you. Following that I don't understand why you restrict yourself to being unable to review any DJI product in the future.
I’m glad to hear Marques say that fully sponsored videos are done. I hate to say this, but just look at iJustine’s channel - her numbers are abysmal at this point because she’s done soooo many completely sponsored videos. She’s trying to rebrand currently, but it’s hard to come back when (for a while) you were just a television commercial channel.
Putting the shitty speeding to the side for a second, why does it seem like these conversations about fully sponsored videos only happened after the video was released? Was no one in the room telling you all that it was a bad idea? Also, no one is stopping you right now from changing the title of the sponsored video if you agree that it was a bad name.
I think the backlash wouldnt have been as bad, if this year didnt already have mistake, People like piling on to someone. That said i think people are being too harsh, especially since Marques has earned the trust of the community by being a good/honest guy and channel. He has made some mistakes, 2 basically. Own up to it and go on.
Ellis, we don’t have small trucks anymore because of the Chicken Tax. Worth looking into. One of the MANY REASONS that we can’t have nice things! Aw dip, thought I posted this comment but kept watching and have another one for you about the Element. Despite having the rubber floor mats, they actually weren’t waterproofed properly to support hosing out the inside. This led to people flooding their ECUs and otherwise damaging the electronics in the Element.
TBH I didn't finish watching the DJI video as it felt too much like an AD. The vibes of the video were off and different then the main channel. I know your review and opinion on gear/tech is 99% accurate and very good where I have trusted you many times before on choosing gear/tech. I am sure you have faith in the DJI product and so do I where I feel like you can not go wrong with a DJI product(I do not have the action camera). The video felt like DJI told the team, talk about A-B-C and that was put in the video rather then the team deciding what A-B-C was. I would rather watch another review on the product that can convince me to buy the product then an AD even though I know the product is really good.
With ads in general most people are kind of tired of it being so intrusive everywhere, still a full video sponsor is more damaging to anyone’s brand than mid segments sponsor segment. That being said, most of the sponsor segments in other creator’s videos that I’ve enjoyed and not really mind being in a video is when is integrated into the end of a good conversation in a funny clever way. I’ve bought some of those products in your mid sponsor segments and for this type of video structure, your mid segment are done relatively well. Wabalubudubdub!!! Good day!
You guys kind of missed the whole Scout thing. International Harvester made semis, pickups and SUVs like the scout and travellal. They were very cool, like the old school Broncos. The new scout is definitely not a Rivian as they are body on frame and the rivian is not. You guys need to get out of the city more. In much of the country people use trucks for truck stuff all of the time. I don't drive my Land Cruiser 80 series unless I am pulling a trailer, going off road, or hauling something huge. The cool thing about a EV with a range extender like the scout is that I could combine 2 of my current cars and just have one I can drive around town as an EV and still be able to go on road trips or offroad without the range anxiety. Right now a pure EV just can't gut it. For instance I recently drive 850 miles for a roundtrip without ever stopping for 15 minutes once and 5 minutes another time. Also driving over the speed limit, while not something we encourage is a normal part of car review, they just usually say they are in Mexico or obscure the speedometer.
I was also confused with the DJI sponsored video because I thought it was previously mentioned with Ridge wallet announcment, and the Studio's how-it's-made video that there should no be a sponsor relationship with things or domain of things that may be reviewed by MKBHD. So if DJI can be a a sponsor, even if the team makes sure no future reviews/opinions are created or created without disclosure, how would I know whether a review for a DJI competitor like GoPro can be as fair as possible?
because he doesn't review action cameras. he reviews phones and computers mostly, so he wouldn't take a sponsorship for a phone or a computer. He has never ever reviewed an action camera so that's totally in line with what they said in those videos
@@jmunt DJI does the Ronin that competes with Red, canon etc in the film industry, they are also in the smartphone camera market in China. Just because they don't make phones and computers doesn't mean there isn't a conflict. To question his bias now is perfectly reasonable in this case. And this probably wasn't a usual 50-60k sponsorship, easily over a million$$ for mkbhd to do a full sponsored video.
It doesn't make sense for a hardware product review channel to be sponsored by one of the companies making products in their niche. A good sponsor is one that makes a product or service RELATED to the niche. Thats why Dbrand is such a reasonable sponsor.
You should have a poll asking your audience if we have a problem with paid videos. Do not allow the minority to dictate your content just because they are loud
Nobody likes ads. But I like that creators can be supported through the income they receive from them - you have to sustain the practice. If it's well integrated and is very clearly disclosed, I don't mind. These's clearly an art to this but trust is the most important currency to me at that point.
I was hoping you’d talk more about the sponsored video. I believe that if a content creator does one then they need to make sure that the product is worth it or else their judgement on a product will be questioned. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do them. I personally don’t care if you get paid.

In many countries, that's a fine, suspended license or both.
He can easily rent a track or do this on a closed off road. Incidents of influencers driving rash in sports car are becoming quite common.
Also, people are just mad that he tried to hide it, that isn't taking accountability, that's just being sorry because you are caught lol
I do agree people hold some influencers to a high standard, this ain't one of those situations
IMO the ethics of sponsorships are fundamentally different for reviewers. By making ads personal and about products they would usually review, the line between ad and review gets blurred. Regardless of the actual opinion of the reviewer, the impression is that they can be bought and are not trustworthy.
@@mchlnhs bro most people usually do it, Linus, unbox therapy literally many TH-camrs but there is no outrage
@@richardkeriafe4051Yes but there’s a reason why they don’t have 20 million subs. Once you start going down this route it’s a very slippery slope.

@@richardkeriafe4051 LTT has very explicit safeguards and policies in place for sponsored content - and sometimes there is still outrage. They literally do? At least Unbox Therapy, hes at 24 m. @@benwiese1976

And note how he said he's done one a year. He isn't moving in that direction at all.
Watching this episode at 75.83x speed so that I can complete it in 1 min
That's the same multiplier Marques used on the speed limit.
I'm gonna speed at 95 in a 35 zone to get to this episode! Move over little kids!
Rookie numbers buddy it's a school zone not a parking lot 👎 100 mph minimum
I think the best ad by y’all has been the storage in the “ How to make quality videos in..” well integrated relevant
The speed on the comments is on 96 😅
😂😂 lol
The speeding issues aside, 7:39 when Marques says he watches a lot of YT, one channel whose ads I almost never skip is Fern, they do an amazing job of integrating them and sometimes you can’t even tell until halfway through the ad.
Marques trying to land that Georgia football tryout
I absolutely LOVE my Ford Maverick and I call it my budget Rivian 😂. It's great for commuting, shopping, and I love having a bed so I can do stuff that the minivan wouldn't work for like dump runs, picking up couches, bed frames, or whatever else my wife finds on Facebook marketplace 😅.
I cannot believe the only thing you chose to address was the sponsor and not the reckless driving lol
He did this with the wallpaper app too.
Stay mad. because he addressed both.
He addressed it immediately
I am not being biased towards Marques, but I think people should ease up on him, sponsors? who cares? Do we ask traditional TV channels if they like what they advertise for? At least him being as honest as he can be about the advertising, and does not push trash products on us for money, AND he is at least addressing it and cares about what his audience think.
I have been following him since 2016, and he is the only creator I watch consistently since then.
Speeding, literally everyone speeds, and when you're in a sports car it is so easy to not do it.
@@odaiameera3620 the sponsor criticism is overblown, that's true, but the speeding thing is worthy of discussion tbh. Does he deserve to get cancelled for it? Not really, no, but you're always putting yourself and others at risk when you speed, so this is something he genuinely should be called out for so hopefully he can do better in the future. There's no excuse for it.
@@alexandrite61 I agree, but he admitted it was dumb, and he apologized, once he apologized on X and here, it should be the end of that discussion, there is no reason for some of the comments I read below.

I guess Final Cut isn't just for editing videos anymore, it's for editing out speeding tickets too!
The sponsorship stuff is starting to get played out. 90% of the people commenting act like they wouldn't take money or free products from a sponsorship if they got the chance. I think people forget that the purpose of these videos are to watch it And then make your own decision depending on what the outline of the video is not getting mad because someone sent the reviewer a product and you didn't get one. And now it's a biased opinion on all this bull crap that comes with it
The unrealistic idealism is a joke
He changed the topic real fast. From 35 mph to 95 mph. Lol.
david seemed kinda annoyed to be there today, hope he’s okay
The problem was your reckless driving that endangered everyone around you.
When thumb nails and titles are not representative of the video but to ensure that viewers click on the content, such audience reactions are not strange to see. We are not numbers and statistics but humans and appreciate honesty.
You say you're a human but you're talking like a bot
Ooooh I get it, Final Cut as when you cut that portion of the video where you were driving at 95mph on a 35 zone. Yeah, I still remember.
He addressed this….get a life. Though a crime, speeding isn’t the worst crime you could ever commit. If the worst thing on his record is a speeding ticket, I’d say he’s fine. I’ve seen people become president with more harsh felonies. 😁
@@thetwenty5thThe issue is normally you get a speeding ticket for going SLIGHTLY above the limit, in many countries you get a prison sentence for driving significantly over the speed limit in a zone with a high risk of pedestrians.
@@aledwilliams1234People love to criticize people that are more successful than them. Yes it was bad, but he's owning up to it.
@ He’s actually just trying to brush it in the carpet, in the video all he said was “I did something very dumb in the video with the car with driving so that was cut out of the video and rightfully people were very mad about that but aside from that...”
@@aledwilliams1234if someone wants to know what he did all they have to do is go into the comments😂 Plus he directly mentioned it on his tweet saying "there was a clip of me driving a car and going way too fast". What else to do you want him to do? Make a 10-minute apology video? If you were him what would you do differently?
FYI I’ve been a subscriber to you for over 10 years and unsubbed you this week not because of the DJI sponsorship but the fact that you 3Xd the speed limit in a school zone. I waited to see your explanation for this and maybe follow back, but frankly you brushed it off as if it wasn’t a big deal, and don’t think you’re genuinely sorry. Just regretful you got caught / didn’t cut the video. The Panels controversy was whatever, but people shouldn’t treat reckless speeding as if it’s nothing and that’s how you came off here.
Will not be resubbing for now.
I think the main thing that upset me with the DJO video was the title - it was baity and aside from a review it felt like it didn't add anything to a viewing experience but it sounds like they all went into it with good intentions of a product they like
did they use final cut to remove the speeding part?
Don’t underestimate your public or it will get back at you, like this time…
I think you should have taken this opportunity to apologize verbally. You just kinda showed the tweet, then started talking about sponsors instead.
The whole sponsored video backlash just really goes to show how TH-camrs have to treat their audience like children..
it's just the execution, was very subpar.

Exactly
doo doo doo doo, Marques-verstappen
It's dissapointing you chose not to address the fact that you broke the law and potentially put children in danger. You gave the fallout from Panels more than this. One statement on X is not sufficient.
Cant believe you only addressed the speeding for like 30 secs
Comments about to be awkward again 🍿🍿🍿
Sure the new M4 is fast, but is it 96mph fast?
Honestly I loved watching MKBHDs videos. There were times where I just scrolled through his videos and watched a one from like 10 years ago just cause I felt like it. I always took everything Marques for my heart, trusted him and it helped me a lot to get confident in speaking English.
But after Panels, a fully advertised video and MKBHD literally driving 60 miles per hour over the limit, I just don’t really trust him anymore and I’m thinking about unsubscribing to everything related to MKBHD. I mean I don’t wanna hate here just wanted to share my honest thoughts 😢
The only backlash Marques deserves is not letting Ellis do the AT&T Ad Break.
My favorite final cut 11 feature was the ability to drive 95 mph in a school zone
Yeah but can it do 96 mph in a school zone?
I'm here for the speeding video comments!
Man, the fact that anyone doesn't just want to see y'all get paid and reap the rewards of all your hard work is just insane. Some haters.
Bruh he went 96mph in a 35ph children playing zone 😂
I drove 96MPH in a 35MPH zone just to come and comment this.
david was so quiet this ep
Damn this due is still doubling down…
This whole thing escalated so quickly. Like your speedometer.
Any chance you guys could talk about TELO trucks on one of these?
It’s a super tiny electric truck start up.
Soo true
Did anyone get hurt?
@@nintendolil567 no one was there
it makes people feel morally superior to jump on a bandwagon of hate. which is ironic, because then whoever receives the hate gets about 100x more hate than is deserved, which I would not call moral.

Yeah I think the problem with the DJI video was the felony speeding and then deleting comments that were pointing out the felony speeding
Preach!
1:27 ya laugh it up marques 😒

David looks disconnected, I hope our guy is alright!

Sorry Ellis. Many of us own pickup trucks and we use the bed. Frequently. However there are folks who buy them as status symbols. Chevy SS 😮
Came here to respond to this. People use their trucks. Maybe not for towing. But I think it's wild to characterize an entire segment like that.

It doesn't make sense for a hardware product review channel to be sponsored by one of the companies making products in their niche. A good sponsor is one that makes a product or service RELATED to the niche. Thats why Dbrand is such a reasonable sponsor.
