HAL's Naval Heli: An Indigenous Submarine Hunter in the making?

  • At the ongoing Aero India 2019 exhibition, India’s Hindustan Aerospace Limited (HAL) displayed a technology demonstrator naval variant of their Dhuruv Mk. III Advanced Light Helicopter, which they designated as the Naval Utility Helicopter (NUH).
The Dhruv NUH is still under development, and is said to be in the final stages with the prototype expected to proceed with its first flight this year.
The helicopter demonstrator features a new Automatic Rotor Blades Folding (ARBF) system, as well as a folding tail rotor section, both features important for ship-based operations for the helicopter to fit in usually tight hangar spaces in ships.
HAL is proposing the Dhruv Naval Utility Helicopter for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, and was designed to conduct various maritime missions including surveillance and targeting, search and rescue (SAR), medical evacuation, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR).

If IAF wants / looks to develop indigenous items then NMRH can be divided into three segment.
    1). MH 60R - 24 nos
2). Current Dhruv fitted with "whatever" DRDO products say ~30-40 nos
    3) Then remaining numbers can be a upgraded Dhruv similar to MH 60R Class. With/ without indigenous subcomponent in it.
In these way Both quality and quantity can be achieved.

Why is the naval variant being built in the lighter single engine LUH rather than the the heavier twin engine ALH( Dhruv) which could be more similar to the MH60R in terms of weapons carrying capability and survivability due to its twin engine setup.
A modification of the HAL Rudra which is itself a modification of the HAL twin engine Dhruv seems like a better fit...what is the reason behind chosing the LUH ?

Navy has requirement for 123 NMRH and 111 NUH.
24 of the 123 NMRH have already been ordered in form of MH-60R, so most likely the tender would be won by Sikorsky who will make the MH-60R in India with TASL.
I really want HAL to win the 111 NUH tender as it will boost the defence industry but this solely rests on HAL ability to quickly build these NUH as per Navy's timelines, do remember that Navy is way more stricter when it comes to timelines as compared to IAF and IA.

HAL being allowed to participate in 111 NUH tender under Make in India category sounds good on paper but seriously hampers Indian Navy's immediate strategic requirements in defence of our seas from belligerent PLA Navy's growing incursion into Indian Ocean & Arabian Sea..
Reason being: HAL has historically failed in timely delivery of aircrafts/helicopters and there's no guarantee that it'll succeed this time.
Therefore, while India should promote Make in India but that shouldn't hamper our defence preparedness.. Indian Navy has covered lot of ground for procurement of 111 NUH under Strategic Parternership route whereby a Indian private sector player collaborates with a foreign OEM company. This has been going on for last 10 years or something and Indian Govt. decision of inviting HAL in the eleventh hour only smack of vested interest in unnecessary delay in procurement, affecting proper naval defence of India ..
