    ok I got to say this : I am cheap and broke at the moment and needles cost more then I have ,so making my own sounds like a dream come true. Besides I love doing crafts as well

    Never thought you could make your own needles , this is awesome . You could make them to your personal liking by staining them different colors ... Great idea ,thanks 💕

    I save the free chopsticks you often get with Chinese food....they are great for wash cloths or other projects that don't need an exact size. [if the ends are not pointed enough, just sand them a bit.]

    You gave me so much confidence just hearing and seeing your ease in making the needles. I just started using the 16" straight needles, which are difficult to find. This will give me what I need to knit faster and evenly with Lever knitting.
    Thank you for doing this video and sharing. Love you to pieces! :)

    Oh my gosh, this is the greatest moment of my life! I will be making needles, now! I also have several bamboo dpn's that my little dog chewed on that can now be salvaged! I'll just re-do the ends and use them for cables or really narrow pieces. You could also get really pretty ceramic beads for the ends if they aren't too heavy. THANK YOU for posting this! :-)

    TY for your tutorial. I've made several using hard wood dowels. Round & square. I tapered the points more to allow a better flow of knitting. I placed the dowel in a drill and held the sandpaper around it while I had the drill on low speed. I was able to smooth the dowel and put a smaller & longer tapered point on it. You can also chanel the size of the dowel with this technique. Thanks again for sparking my interest in making my own needles. I love them!

    This is a great option if a-you want custom needles, or b-you lose one of your double pointed or single pointed needles. Buying all the "stuff" is a good investment for every serious knitter.Thank you!!

    Great video! I'd like to suggest you buy a cheap hacksaw to trim your dowels. Better than ruining a good pair of scissors... easier, too.

    I made mine from wooden skewers. I am just learning to knit and didn't want to invest in knitting needles until I knew I wanted to pursue this. I cut mine down to a easy to handle length. I am enjoying learning to knit. I do have a pair of knitting needles that were given to me but they are really long. They are hard to work with. I already had the skewers. I also have wooden dowels. I would like to make thicker needles from those. Great tutorial!

    This is great tutorial. I have made my own tunisian crotchet, regular crochet and double ended crochet hooks. Knitting needle were the last I needed to make. Once I finish this video I am going to buy some dowels and will make my own! Thanks soo much.

    • @2twinszz
      @2twinszz 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any tips on making the tunisian hooks? Tried it once with some help and seemed a LOT more difficult than what was shown here. LOL

    • @GaminGawdess
      @GaminGawdess 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The trick to the Tunisian hooks is you must use a very long dowel. You want to buy the dowels that do not come in the packages, like the ones at the hardware store. The length should be about 15-16'. But it really is a personal preference. Remember the tunisian hooks are nothing more than crochet hooks with a really long shaft and a stopper at the end. You can use anything as a stopper on the end…but it must be light weight so it will not fatigue your hands. Another tip, is when you are done carving the dowel, use 000 steel wool to sand the dowel, then use wax to coat it. You can use wax paper, oil or a beeswax. I use a beeswax paste thatI bought at Home Depot (it has a REALLY strong odor while working with it) but it goes on quick, easy and makes your hooks very smooth.
      Sorry for such along a post. But if you have any questions or concerns feel feel to contact me. I love my hooks and even made double ended ones. You'll be hooked (excuse the pun) and you will save a ton of money. :)

    Omg, thank you, thank you, thank you for this tutorial...it is exactly what I needed as lately I've been wondering if/how to make my own knitting needles. Can you please do a video tutorial on making your own circulars? Sometimes I really need a "customized" length or can't find a specific cable length circulars in stores locally & wish I could make my own circulars. Thanks

  • @U2cantrustme
    @U2cantrustme 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Pencil erasers would make a good end for straight needles, easier to find and cheap. I made some needles out of wooden dowels then I rubbed it over a candle to wax the wood then I hand polished them. Turned out great, I needed something much longer than what the store had. I sanded mine with a much finer grit of sand paper. 220 isnt good enough, 400 would be the lowest grit i recommend. I used 1000 and wet-sanded them. Now im looking for vids on how to make circular needles. Thinking about cutting some straight needles then using plastic coated cable wire to stick in the ends, should work. Thats how i stumbled onto this video I was looking for handmade circular knitting needles to see if anyone has used the plastic coated cable wire yet.

And since I am cheap I have decided to make my own needles. :) just needed a little push on it. :) great video

    I bought some cable needles because making an Icord with regular dpn's was bothersome; I hate them! They have ridges in them, WHY. The yarn gets stuck and it's a total waste of time trying to use them, they just look pretty in my supply box (the rainbow colored set from Knitpicks).
    I definitely want to try this to make a set of tiny dpn's just for making Icords. Thx for the video!

      I like to do intricate designs at the end of my needles and such. Making your own allows for much more customization. Some people use really long needles that would be difficult if not impossible to find, so they would need to spend a ton of money having them made, or they can make them themselves. Personally, I'm making myself a set of circular needles that have very long needles because I want to use a technique that's not possible with short needles, but I don't like using straight needles.
      I happen to have all the tools to make the needles except for the dowels, and I like to make my needles a different way so they're all one piece. I also like to paint them and lacquer them to within an inch of their lives.
      I like to make things myself because it gives me a sense of accomplishment and helps me keep myself grounded.
