Instead of just using the tape at the join between the string and the needle, you could alternatively tape the whole string so that its more secure and easy

I'd suggest using a needle sizing do-dad card, and just trying it out on anything sticklike and pointy, like bamboo skewers.
Or, you could measure the diameter manually, with a ruler, and do conversions. Centimeter is only a small, easy conversion from milimeters.
