  • Mardi Himal trek is a newly open trekking route in Nepal and has become the most popular trekking destination for domestic trekkers. But among the foreign trekkers, this trek is not much popular as Annapurna base camp or Everest base camp, foreign trekkers should consider this trek because of its beauty and suitability for those who have less experience of trekking in the Himalayas, and can be completed in less than a weeks’ time. Without doubt, Mardi Himal is an impressively beautiful trek, hiking through the local villages, rhododendron forests, and facing the beautiful mountains.
Our Mardi Himal trek started by leaving the crowded Kathmandu Airport on a cloudy day heading for Pokhara. Once we flew up above the clouds we had some excellent views of the snow-covered Himalayas which gave us expectations of our trek to come! It is a short 20-minute flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. So we were there in no time it seemed. Upon arriving, we settled at our hotel, Hotel Orchid, and grabbed a bite to eat. Later that evening we strolled the main street of Pokhara near the lake, looking in various shops along the way. Because of covid-19, there were very few people walking or shopping. We bought a few caps and the sales lady in one store said that the items bought there was the only thing she had sold all day! After a light meal at the hotel, we turned in to get a good night's sleep for our first big day trekking!
After a light breakfast, we loaded gear and our group of six in a 4 wheel drive jeep to get us up to the start of the trek. We ended our jeep ride at Deurali at an altitude of 2,100 meters where we would begin our first-day trekking. After some tea at the tea house and picture taking, we started the trek at the nearby trail heading into the forest. The trail was easy to follow being marked with blue and white paint on trees or rocks. It is a scenic way over rocks, stone stairs and dirt pathways. Although January and wintertime, the weather was mild and the forest beautiful with a variety of trees with hanging mosses, even flowers blooming! There were bushes of a type of jasmine which gave a lovely fragrance to the air as we passed through. Some of the rocky hillsides were dotted with small groups of flowers like primrose. The going was steadily up but not particularly hard as we stopped periodically for a break and to take pictures.
The second day started early after a warm breakfast. The trail again wound its way through the forest, similar going as the day before. Fortunately, the weather had cleared and we again were able to have some magnificent views of Mt Fishtail and the Annapurna mts. The trail has recently been improved and more stone steps added to make the way easier to manage. There are many tea houses along the way where one can stop for a rest, a tea or just take in the view. It looked like more tea houses are also being built. We stopped for a tea and the views at Low Camp (2900m) where one can spend the night if they choose. At that point and slightly before we encountered some snow and ice from previous days. The going was a bit slushy, icy and muddy but not too bad. After 5 hours, we arrived at Badal-dada for our overnight at 3200m which gives one a 360 degree view of the Himalayas!
Starting off early the next day after breakfast, we trekked about 2 hours to High Camp. The trail went along the top of the ridge and around the side of mountains with some up and downstairs. Again fantastic views both of the mountains and the green valleys dropping hundreds of meters below. The trail was clear where the sun had melted the snow but a bit icy on the shady side. On reaching High Camp (3550m), the weather was still clear and we had excellent scenes of all the mountains all the way around! Soon after settling into our rooms and having breakfast, we took a hike up to the View Point at 4250 meters where we were even closer to the incredible and breathtaking Himalayas!
Our next morning was actually sunny but cold with a slight breeze since we were on top of the mountain. We had brought crampons to put on our boots, as the light snow and previous ice had made the going a bit slippery. Retracing our trail from the day before we followed the stone path along the hillside and up and downstairs with again wonderful views of valleys and mountains. Again passing through tea houses, stopping for mule trains bringing up supplies, and negotiating icy steps, we made it to driveway.
The Mardi Himel Trek is one that should be highly recommended!
