Just returned home from a week at Lake Fork. We would have never ventured out of our old favorite Colorado campground, Florida, if I had not come across your channel. Last year we tried and loved Silver Jack after seeing it on your channel, and this year we tried out Lake Fork. I was attracted to this area of Colorado after watching your series of videos from the Conejos Peak Ranger District. We originally wanted to go to Aspen Glade, but could not get a decent reservation. I was able to snag a reservation at Elk Creek, and then one opened up at Mogote, and then one opened up at Lake Fork. I really wanted to be more in the mountains, so Lake Fork fit the bill. We ended up going a few days early to risk trying to find a first come, first serve site until our reservation kicked in. We stayed in site #6 and decided we liked it better than than #15 that we had reserved later in the week, so we canceled that reservation. My wife was bothered that the picnic table was on the “wrong” side (If you are in a trailer or RV, your front door will be on the opposite side of the table in this site.), so later in the week after some folks left, we ended up moving to #7, which was well worth the hassle of moving. Very private site with easy access to the river. The ONLY thing we did not like about Lake Fork was the 17 miles of one of the most hideously wash boarded dirt roads we have ever driven on! It was really bad, and I think my teeth are still chattering together even several days later! Actually there were two things we did not like…. The road and the reservation system, or rather the inconsiderate use of it by folks. This was our first time staying in a campground that accepted reservations. Up until the day we left home for Lake Fork, all of the reservable sites were booked with only the odd single day available every now and then. During our stay, the majority of those sites were never occupied. While I was actually glad as I prefer a quiet, empty campground, it was also very frustrating that those sites were reserved and not used when there were probably people who would have jumped to have those sites. I don’t know if that is the norm for reservable campsites.
Anyway, THANK YOU Campground Recon for exposing us to new areas of Colorado. We have enjoyed our new adventures that we discovered watching your videos and look forward to discovering even more campgrounds in the future.
Sounds like a great trip overall. It’s surprising how many reserved sites go unused. The remote campgrounds like these are my favorites. You’d probably like Trappers Lake. Start with the Cutthroat Campground video. It’s another day’s drive to NW Colorado but worth it.

Colorado needs more tent-only sites. Only bad thing about the state -- too many RVers camped out in the same spots year round for weeks.

I’ve been visiting Lake Fork for 50 years. For some reason it’s my all time favorite. The reservation system stinks.
