  • Well with Hardwired... To Self-Destruct on the shelves, it's time to take a look at one of the most badass LTD signature models ESP have out right now: James Hetfield's signature LTD Iron Cross!
    EDIT: Not a full thickness model. LTD tricked me with binding on both the front and back, and by using heavier than normal woods for an LTD Eclipse.

      it's his nice way of saying he doesn't like the designs. and that's its not for him. and I have to agree I love Metallica but i dont wanna look like a fan boy showing up to a show with a metallica guitar.

      I think he means it looks a bit cheesy. All of the other signatures are just Hetfield style, but this one is just full on hetfeild themed. Personally I don’t agree and I think the guitar looks sick but I think that’s what he meant.

    One of my favorite spec'd LTDs in a long while. I've never owned one but played both this LTD version and the ESP version dozens of times. I always manage to pick one up at the shop whenever I see one because of those striking visuals and the fact it's instantly recognizable. I think there's a big difference though in terms of recognition between someone like Hetfield and In Flame's Bjorn Gelotte. I mean, In Flames is one of my favorite bands of all time and Bjorn & Jesper are some of my favorite guitarists, but James Hetfield is simply on another level. He is an American icon, it's that simple. He pretty much single handed took metal a step further in a heavier direction in American culture. Sure there were other heavy bands at the time, but Metallica was a pioneering band in every sense. When everyone else was doing glam metal in LA, James stuck to his guns and wanted to write heavier music. Everyone knows the story though. So that's why I don't think you can compare those two artist's guitars in terms of recognition. James Hetfield has far more name recognition than Bjorn(Sorry Bjorn), and his signature guitars have been around longer and advertised stronger. I get the point you're making though.
    But back to the specs of this guitar, there's a few things I really love. The ebony board is as black as they get(possibly dyed as well, not sure). They kept the volume/tone control layout similar to what a Gibson would have, where as other LTD ECs have them all in a line, more similar to a super-strat style guitar ibanezs or jacksons, etc. I love that they went away from the standard metal "dome" knobs that you see on most EC models(and other metal guitars like Jacksons) and went back to a more traditional tophat style knob found on most single cut guitars. James really wanted a traditional gibson style single cut here and he got it. I love that it's full thickness and double bound. I own a 1000T and I've loved it ever since I bought it, EMGs be damned. Finally, and this is a small detail, but I love that they kept the ring around the selector switch that you see on a Les Paul but not typically on an Eclipse. All the little things that give it a more traditional look. The het set EMGs are probably my favorite sounding EMGs ever made. When I was younger and playing stuff like metalcore, I loved both the EMG 81 and 85 in the bridge(I used the 85 in the bridge in my alder guitars), but I've since REALLY grown tired of the active sound and fell in love with moderate output passives...but I still don't mind playing guitars with the het set in them, and my 1000T has them and sounds great with the right amp. I'm still likely going to replace them with passives though, but for now I don't mind it. I just don't play the typical 81/60 or 81/85 sets anymore.

    Not trying to bash you, but frankly I think of youre buying a signature model, that's what you get. If you want your own instrument, I don't really think a signature model is for you. Its Nice to see a signature model that's true to the artist instead of a halfassed in house knock off so removed from anything the actual guy would play it may as well be its own thing. If you want "your" instrument with those features, I think modding is the absolute best thing. Well, in general. Every guitar I own has some mod or another, and some are to sound exactly like other people, and some are for myself. Anyway, not trying to troll, just sharing an opinion I'm sure no one cares about. Still a great video!

      I like Billie Joe Armstrongs signature Gibson Les Paul Jr. You don't even have to listen to green day to like the guitar, it's literally a replica of what he plays which is a old Les Paul Jr. Nicknamed "Floyd" it doesn't have any gimmicks or crazy art designs, or anything different on the frets, it's just a LP junior reissue basically

    @bradpierstorff1367 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with that statement about signature models. I had an Ibanez MTM 20 for a while and it never felt like my guitar. It always felt like Mick Thomson’s guitar instead despite the fact that I bought the guitar under the idea that it matched all the specs i was looking for (mahogany body, reverse headstock, active pick ups, etc). I have since sold the guitar and used the money to get a brand new ESP LTD M400 that I love! It definitely doesn’t have the stigma that it is someone else’s guitar. It is mine and I can do whatever I want with it and make it into my own signature model :)

In Germany it didn't come with a case nor bag. I had to buy it seperately... All in all great guitar, but it's not full thickness. It looks like that, because of the back binding, but it measures as thin as all my other Eclipses. Sounds awesome, looks cool and the craftsmanship is totally fine.

  • @therealscarred2112
    @therealscarred2112 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I so want to love this: a non-slimmed Singlecut (when it comes to Electric Guitars, I'm *all* about full-thickness LP-styles), all the "right" woods for this style of Guitar, great build & hardware quality for the price range...
    But the first aspect is what you brought up: the *overwhelmingly* Hetfield factor visually. You nailed the point perfectly - keep the white & striped paint job as well as the black hardware, but the Iron Cross behind the bridge and Inlay @ the 12th fret is a) just too much, and too *large* physical reminders that this is Hetfield's Signature Guitar. I also have to honestly say that growing up with a ton of my close friends Jewish (and still have a great deal of those friends close enough to consider "family"), having dinner with their extended families and *seeing* tattooed numbers on Grandparent's arms, the sheer size of those Iron Crosses and their meaning in the history of Germany as well as the rise of Neo-nationalism both in Europe and in America recently makes my stomach turn enough to not want to wear that Guitar, to represent those on me. 😟
    ...but b), the second part of the Guitar that makes it a "No" for me are the EMG "Het Set" Pickups. I have two PRS SE Nick Catanese (both his original MKI & MKII) that I got NOS for steal prices, both of which came stock with EMG 81/85s that I gave "the old College Try" to work with & like, but simply ended up not being the Pickups for what *I* was trying to do. So far I've replaced 1 of those and 1 of another Guitar with EMG's new Retro Active "Super '77" open-coil design, and they are far more equally balanced in terms of EQ and in general a far less "scooped", more "Hard Rock" Pickups which is what I was looking for. I hope to sell off the 81/85s & Hardware, but I have little use in purchasing a "New" Guitar just to dump and sell the stock Pups. The Used Market is too great to find deals and avoid all that.
    But great reviews, and it's fantastic to see you being honest when there are a large amount of reviewers online that aren't, that will sell out for sets of Pickups or a Guitar for wholesale price. You are to be commended! 👍🏼

      Kinda similar to my opinion, especially the first bit, I think it looks pretty cool but being Jewish the iron cross imagery doesn’t sit with me, even though James and ESP’s intentions are clearly not supportive of that particular part of history.

    Interesting point that this guitar is almost too Hetfield. I think it's pretty cool and anyone buying it knows that he's getting ( almost) one of James's guitars. After playing both sets, would you consider changing out your 81/60's for the hetset? Keep up with the great vids man!

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that James' set is much better than the 81/60 set, but not enough to go out and replace them. They aren't 240 dollars better. But if I needed to replace the pickups in a new project guitar, say a Harley Benton, I would go for the Hetset over the 81/60 every time. Does that make sense or am I rambling?

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this is a question I get really often, beginning to think I should include it in an FAQ video. So basically the JH set is higher-output, more aggressive and less compressed. It's much more noticeable in the room when you're playing than it is on TH-cam. Do I think they're a $240 dollar upgrade over EMG81/60 set? Nah. But if I were looking to replace a passive set with an active set, I'd go for the JH Set every time.

    So what do you think - Iron Cross or Epiphone MKH Signature? I'm on the fence. The Brent Hinds V is also on the radar...if you were going to pick one, which would it be? To be clear, I'm not looking for a signature guitar as a rule, but in the $1000 range, those guitars have massive bang for the buck.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Between the three, I'd pick the Iron Cross. It feels the fastest and the EMG JH Set is the best sounding set of pickups out of the three to my ears. My favorite signature model under $1000 is the LTD BK-600 though. Not a huge fan of the Lace pickups, but the satin finish, neck cutaway, and 12" ebony fingerboard feel incredible.

    • @jburdsinfuse
      @jburdsinfuse 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback. I love the satin finish on the BK, but I don't love the green. I actually was able to play all of them (I live in Houston, lots of guitar shops) and went with...the LTD Vulture. It had the Het Set, I love that, satin finish, ebony, no big logos other than the JH on the headstock and the V is really comfortable to play. Thanks for the reply - I know you'll eventually be too big to reply to everyone. Great channel and great riffage!!!

    hi, have you ever compared in general a esp to a Ltd? I own a esp but never payed a Ltd, cause I'm left handed. I also had a Edwards Les Paul that I think it's way good than a Ltd. I'm thinking to get another one but it needs some mods that would make the price jump up too far instead of getting a Ltd ( that might already have tone pros and emgs). thanks!

    • @xaviaguilar1709
      @xaviaguilar1709 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      muaythai4lifelife I wonder the same thing but I own an LTD. I'm left handed but I was taught right handed. What I can say about the LTD is that they are really good for the money. At least the 400 series and up assuming your talking about the eclipse. My guess is that they are really just a stripped down version of an ESP. Like aesthetics-wise. Maybe a better bridge and tuners but the ones on the guitar now are decent. You don't really have to do much to it actually.

    • @muaythai4lifelife
      @muaythai4lifelife 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Xavi Aguilar Thanx! If the difference would be only aesthetics wise that could be acceptable, especially keeping in mind the money needed to get one, but my opinion is that the difference consists in the quality of the woods, and time dedicated to the instrument during the building process. The big problem might be if the difference would only be the letters on the headstock :) and i think that's not the case :D
      The price difference between a esp and Ltd is huge. My personal feeling, hearing/watching many many videos is that the main difference comes from the woods, but I may be wrong...

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the LTD hardware is really good. You won't get Gotoh tuners/bridge like on the ESP, but the LTD locking tuners are pretty good, and some LTDs like the Hetfield have TonePros. The biggest differences, for me, is that the LTDs have the battery compartment (ESPs don't), and the ESPs have a 12" fingerboard radius (LTDs usually have 14").

    • @ge69rh
      @ge69rh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      muaythai4lifelife biggest difference between the ESP and the LTD. is that ESP' s are hand crafted one at a time, LTD's are assembly line products.

    Really nice playing man. I have a question. I am trying to decide among 3 different ESP guitars. I've been looking at the ESP E-II Eclipse db vb, ESP E-II FRX and the ESP Iron Cross James Hetfield signature. I have my heart set on getting a guitar for heavy metal (mainly Metallica). I want to know if you or anyone can recommend what you think is best or even suggest another guitar. I'm really looking for a shred guitar. Any help WILL be greatly appreciated. Preferrable price range is about $1000 - $1900.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since I'm not a shredder myself, it's kind of hard for me to give an opinion on that, but here goes anyways! Between the three, the FRX is your best bet. Both the other two have the same shortcomings as a Les Paul (single-cut and the boxy neck joint make upper fret access harder than it should be), and I feel are tailored more to rhythm players. Have you looked into the E-II Horizons at all? They've been a shredder favorite for years.
