People have been cancelling AG for YEARS over different things (having a doll who was homeless for a time in 2009, having Kira have two aunts, etc.). It's so ridiculous and I'm happy to see that AG don't stoop to their level just to make more money
Also, AG has a PLETHORA of white dolls and a 6y/o looks so generic that I'm genuinely surprised she couldn't find one that looks like her, he might be lying on that one tbh.

When the brand is about selling a $250 doll that's supposed be like you, having a homeless one does sound a little tasteless

@@complainer406 tasteless maybe, bringing awareness to an issue yes. People were too busy being outraged by a homeless doll than the 2.5million homeless children in the US. American Girl did (and probably does still) donate to HomeAid, a charity that finds housing for homeless.

The guy complaining about no white girl dolls makes me laugh (at the guy, not the little girl). That’s what Latines, African-Americans, Asians and other minorities went through for YEARS (and still to this day in some places). I would have love a doll that looked like me as a child, the only doll that looked closet to me was Yasmín from Bratz.

    • @Mokiefraggle
      @Mokiefraggle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Also, he's just plain _wrong._ He's a lying sack of trash. There's no less than 11 white girl dolls, compared to 5 Black dolls, two Latina dolls, three Asian dolls, a Native American doll, and a Pacific Islander doll. That's not even counting the fact that you can make custom dolls (as in, you can make dolls that _look just like your daughter,_ you fake news bag of wind!), and that the original set of American Girls wasn't some "Oh, isn't the dolly so sweet, it looks just like my little darling girl!!!" thing. To act like that's all they are is forgetting where they came from and what they continue to be, with their "Girl of the Year" line.
They were meant to be _HISTORICAL._ They were about characters who went through hardships, and grew and became stronger, better people. A Swedish immigrant learning to adapt to her new life in America during the 1850s. A Colonial girl forced to choose between her Loyalist friend and Patriot family during the Revolutionary War. A Victorian-era New England orphan taken in by her high-society grandmother, learning and growing up in a world marked by classism, women's suffrage, and child labor, as she befriends one of the servants. A girl living during WWII, whose father winds up fighting in the war, while her family learns to make it through with her mother taking on a job as the primary breadwinner, and having to experience rationing and all the fears that go with living during a war. An escaped slave, who confronts themes of racism in her stories, but also familial love and freedom. The list goes on: a girl from the Great Depression, a Jewish girl growing up during WWI, a Hawaiian girl whose story picks up right before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
I owned original-release Molly McIntire and Felicity Merriman dolls (wow, I feel old saying that, seeing as the line started in 1986!), and I loved that they were both very different from me, and had these wonderful stories that came with them, full of lessons learned and families that loved each other no matter their struggles. American Girls are and have always been about being accepting, about learning to respect differences. If this skeevy liar of a false journalist can't handle his precious baby seeing diversity in a _doll,_ then I shudder to think what he might be teaching her about the world she lives in.

His name is Joey, my mother got him at a yard sale and he was a girl to the kid who had him before me.
Joey was a gay trans boy at a time before I'd even heard the word Transgender and was completely confused about why I felt such a strong connection to the LGBTQ+ community. The whole big deal about representation is kind of insulting because this indirectly implies that the characters I saw growing up with were not "like me" just because they weren't the same ethnicity as me. I wasn't really "deprived" of anything, I was able to relate to characters because they were great characters and I was able to relate to them and their experiences. Never crossed my mind that "they don't have the same looking skin as me" until I got in school and I learned about race issues in history.
Characters being something other than white was always going to increase naturally as the population became more diverse, this weird prioritizing of representation just seems condescending to me.

I spent all my days inside, not talking to anyone, rarely even talking to my own family. I never got sex ed from school, I never was told anything. I struggled with bad thoughts for years and I didn’t know why and I couldn’t talk to anyone. I even read AG books when I was younger. Seeing so many people hate on a book that could save lives makes me so frustrated. Thank you for talking about this.

It was so much to go through so fast; there wasn't really time to process how I felt about my gender because suddenly I was filled out and there was no way to think "what if I didn't have to be". This 'second puberty' has been amazing, especially being 33 and able to manage everything so much better.

Seriously, I’ve looked into puberty blockers and seen the panicks people have had about them too and omg lemme just say they would go into cardiac arrest if they found out what my adhd meds do to you. Like kids the age of 6 go on them. Side afects include accelerated heart rate, high blood pressure, higher risk of heart attack and for the people with cirtan disabilities and mental illness, psychosis and seizures. Those are actually pushed on kids by parents and it creates an unhealthy relationship with that kids medication to the point the resent it. Like it’s something you have to take no matter what and there’s no option to get on something else or change dosage. That’s how you get kids dumping them down the drain. Not to mention its often treated as a cure all for adhd and if a parent still sees signs of it they up the dose. It’s like hello why not look at an actual issue and listen to kids more instead of being transphobic?? Ugg I can go on. Stimulants are way worse and are what transphobes think puberty blockers are like. But those are safe if handed correctly. The words of that book are so comforting , to me, as a trans adult. If my parents had given it to me when I was younger, than I would assume they had at least skimmed it first, and feeling like they were giving me the green light to define my gender based on my inner voice and free of expectations. Instead, the explicit and implied expectations made my life much more difficult than it has/had to be.
It's awful that people want to control their kids by making them free to express themselves, and many do these days, that's my takeaway of this (predictable) reaction to this educational media.
But we've seen it time and again, how easy outrage is manufactured by the right- wing, how easily fascism takes over in an ignorant, ill-informed, economically depressed and frustrated populace. How easy people can be convinced to scapegoat a marginalized populace.

It's funny to hear that because it is these same people who will insult women because they aren't feminine enough and insult men because they are too feminine.
The strict roles society places on individuals to be causes self loathing not informing children that trans people exist. This book did an amazing job. I love the quote on that page called Gender Joy, "Luckily, it's not your job to look the way people expect - it's your job to be you."

It practically safed my life, i came out to my mom she accepts me and said that ill still be her child, even though i won't be her daughter anymore she will accept me as her son. It made me very happy.
I'm 21 now still feeling like this, i already planned how i want to start my journey. Currently im looking into the dgti-supplemental ID card which is 19,90€ currently it's a headstart for me to start coming out to others without going into detail. Then i'll slowly build up my journey to legally changing my name and my gender on all legal documents. After that i'll look into therapy to get T-shots.
Transphobes are ruining these chances for children who are trans, it's deadly and harmful. Children aren't dumb, i've met plently who are smart and more open to topics adults usually are part of (politics etc.) children deserve the right to their own identity, transphobes need to mind their business.

One of the oldest recorded story's in history literally had a mortal who identified as neither man nor woman save Ishtar when no one else could. The funniest thing about the guy not being able to find find a doll for his white daughter is that AG literally offers "create your own" dolls that you can customize the features of to look like you LOL. I’m so sad my mother didn’t get me this series from American girl. I got the “Care and Keeping of You” one which just made me depressed every time I read them.
This series would have made things so much easier for a young trans guy like me :).

I had an American girl doll growing up (mine was actually named Samantha, lol) And they've always had books. That's a huge part of what I liked about them, was that each doll came with books about her. I was never as interested in the modern-day fiction books, but I did have some of the Smart Girl's Guides. I'm glad they're being more inclusive.

The whole comparing hrt to hard drugs reminds me of when I was a neurodivergent kid in the 2000-2010's who took Ritalin and my classmates would always repeat their parent's asinine beliefs that ADHD doesn't exist and that meds for it are addictive and compared it to meth which was hilarious to me because if I were addicted to my meds I don't think I would forget to take them for days and even weeks on end. Even as an adult I forget to take them all the damn time, heck I'm more addicted to coffee then I am ADHD medication.

Maybe consider looking into a monthly pill organizer/caddy. It's really helped me. I do screw up from time to time, but far less frequently.
Now if only I could keep myself on track for filling my organizers each month, lol.

It's funnier to me that they call hrt "hard drugs" when all it is is taking a human body and giving it human hormones that we all have some of and changing the balance to be more like the opposite sex (which we're all more similar to than we think).

    1) People often forget how controversial sex ed books are in general, there's usually a couple every year on the ALA's top 100 most banned and challenged books list. I'd consider "Our Bodies Ourselves" to be one of the first modern sex-ed books, even though it's for all ages, and that only first came out in 1970. Lots of people still seem to think that providing women, girls, and AFAB people more generally with detailed, accurate, and comprehensive information about their bodies is "too sexual". (
    2) I'm pretty sure one of the puberty books I had as a kid was by American Girl, and this was about 20 years ago. Yeah, it was a little awkward, especially reading it with my mom. But it was much better than anything I learned in school.
    3) I teared up when you read that last part. They really did their DBT research, pointing out that you can appreciate your body but also want it to be different at the same time, and suggesting concrete actions that kids can do to feel better when they're distressed. They've done such a great job breaking down these concepts so that even little kids can understand and be comforted. Even though I'm cis, reading that just felt like a big hug to my younger self.

I love how AG had these little sections about gender identity AND they stood their ground about it. I didn't realize I was nonbinary until I was an adult, but reading about gender identity would've been interesting to learn about as a kid.

Growing up my grandma was obsessed with buying me and my four sisters these dolls. I had three of them, one that looked like me, another that looked like other girls my age ( both white) but my favorite one was Josefina who is a Mexican American Girl. So I don’t understand his problem with not finding one that looks like his daughter. I loved Josefina and she couldn’t look less like me.

Why wouldn’t she want to be a boy, especially since she was amab.’ Turns out you don’t chose to be trans and turns out I’m a trans man. It all makes sense now

I really can't rave about the AG Care and Keeping of you books enough. The original book had a LOT of useful information, from typical timelines, what to expect, how to keep yourself clean, bras and sizing, even menstrual products and how to use them. I had the book before I got puberty (like a year or two) and when it all started, it really helped me be less scared about my body and what it was doing, and it helped me communicate with my parents about what I needed to help.
On a more serious note, the original care and keeping book introduced the idea of the bikini zone to me. It wasn't a big thing, just a note that was like "yo this is what it is, and that's your body and if someone is touching you there or is wanting to touch you there, you have every right to say no and tell someone." However, this little snippet helped me to notice someone was trying to hurt me and to get away before it got too far. Truly a lifesaver

I had American Girl dolls and the books growing up, mostly due to the fact that my mom loved them and got me into them too (we're both history nerds and this was when the dolls focused on points in American history). I'm an adult now, and grew out of them, but my mom still loves them. I'm looking forward to telling her about this because she'll probably use it as an excuse to buy one.

I was obsessed with American Girl as a kid. I read every historical girl book the library had and burned through them. I even still own a few box sets. (Felicity was my fav)
I have a very conservative Christian family and have spent the last few years learning and connecting with the queer community. Being able to look back on something I loved so much as a 22yr old now, and see that it’s still so loving and helpful towards the little girls who enjoy it is so heartwarming for me.
