In her first album especially in The Saxophone Song, she sounds so young and angelic. Can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of the album already! I'm 19 and I feel more connected to her first two albums. She was around my age when she released her debut album is just simply amazing. What a talent, what a human being. ❤

indra "Saxophone Song" and "Man With The Child In His Eyes" on the album were actually recorded as a demo paid for by Dave Gilmour when she was 16, along with "Maybe" which was later released as "Humming", So she didn't only 'sound' young, she was young.

This song is from the demo that David Gilmour paid for and Kate recorded when she was 16. Yes, that's the 16 year old Kate there. Her vocals are different, more pure soprano without the "vocal gymnastics" she adopted at 19. All the session musicians on this album were picked by Andrew Powell and David Gilmour, the co-producers.
She recorded three songs on that demo - this, "The Man With The Child In His Eyes", and a third one which I think has never appeared on any official record. Such a precocious talent, she wrote this song at 15, and "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" when she was 12.

The third sing finally appeared in 2018 as part of "The Other Sides" in her remasters project. It's called "Humming" and is a tribute to David Bowie. It's a nice song, but I can see why it was left of the album.

Loved it. There's a lot of Joni Mitchell influence here; jazzy Joni as well as folky Joni. I didn't think of a Steely Dan connection, but if Kate Bush sang for them, I might even like them! 😉. I agree about the coda (play out); it' a great, trippy groove.

Some might think this song hasn't aged well, cause its sounds and style are really rooted in the 1970s (the album was released in 1978 but this song was recorded in 1975 when Kate was only 17), but I have always found it charming. Agree with U, Justin, the coda is amazing

I think this was one of the tracks recorded when Kate was 16, so I doubt if she had much control over the session or personnel. It's a track I can enjoy for its simple naivety, although it's really quite slight and no better than average. If this had been the best of which she was capable I don't think her career would have flourished as it did.

  • @sean---the-other-one

One of her two ‘odes’ to instruments, the other being Violin, which you’ve already reacted to.
In The Saxophone Song she fleetingly skirts with using her voice to mimic a sound or feeling, namely the ‘dabadabadoooooo’ onomatopoeia.
In the later song Violin she uses her voice as an instrument to replicate some wild bowing actions on a fiddle.
Later again with Rubberband Girl she uses her vocals and harmonies to sonically recreate to almost subsonic tones of stretched elastic.
And then on the Aerial album she again uses vocal ideas with harmonies to recreate low moaning of wind around structures in the awesome How To Be Invisible.
I love how adventurous she can be in her artistry. She was a pioneer and a true individual. Fearless.

Hello JP, I going to add this comment to one of your excellent Kate Bush reactions in light of the literal exponential surge of interest in "Running Up That Hill" due its heavy use in #StrangerThings this was certainly didn't have this on any bingo card.
Now the single charts are being published in countries, a couple of notable points.
First, it entered straight into number 2 of the Australian singles charts which is the highest position Running Up Thaf Hill has ever reached in Australia.
Running Up That Hill entered into number 8 of the UK singles charts which meant that Kate Bush became the fist female artist to have, at least one top 12 hit single in the UK chart for SIX consecutive decades 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s 2020s an unbelievable achievement, which I don't know if it will ever be matched.
So very much keeping my fingers crossed for the Billboard charts on Tuesday.
Any idea when you will posting your next Kate Bush reaction?
    Anyway all the best.

Hi JP, enjoying your eloquence as you work your way through the very first album I listened to waaay back in 1979 when I was a mere pup of 5 years old!
As you have already done Wuthering Heights, you could replace that track with the re-recorded version that Kate Bush did for her 1986 greatest hits LP The Whole Story? Just a thought, to see what you make of the 80s type mix she gave it. :)

The Saxophone Song was one of the demos Dave Gilmour paid for, The Man With The Child In His Eyes is also one of them, I think this was 1975 and she was 16. You can hear that she sounds younger and a bit more shy when she sings, she sounds so innocent and sweet. This song is so beautiful. The instrumental part at the end is a masterpiece, I always look forward to it. I'm so excited for you to hear Strange Phenomena next, it's one of my favorite songs and it's so magical.

Alan Skidmore is quite a name in jazz and jazz-rock. He plays on one of our favorite jazz-rock albums. It is "Inside: Missing Link", a solo album of German guitarist Volker Kriegel (who is definitely worth listening to, especially this album); Skidmore does for example play the sax solo in this track of the album:
    th-cam.com/video/8H-ynyVyv_c/w-d-xo.html
The album has a top line-up; besides Kriegel on electric and acoustic guitars (and banjo on one track) there are Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone (he was widely considered to be the best trombone player in the world during his lifetime; the 1976 live album "Trilogue" featuring only Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, Jaco Pastorius on bass and Alphonse Mouzon on drums is legendary), Alan Skidmore on soprano and tenor saxophone, Heinz Sauer on tenor saxophone, John Taylor on electric piano, Eberhard Weber on bass, John Marshall on drums and Cees See on percussion, voice, flutes and effects. Anyone who loves jazz should get a kind of eargasm from the line-up alone.

While the folklore is that this song was inspired by David Bowie, who played some sax, Kate herself stated in interview that she wrote the song about the instrument, not any person. Oh...as for the "bowels" thing...you can feel a good tenor sax in your guts when it hits those low notes.
    Blessings.

Hearing some early Kate Bush really takes me back.
I was just trying to think of suggestions. Dylan's Blood On The Tracks is a very obvious one, although I guess that would take you back into being blocked. I will suggest that you finish a couple of albums: Van Morrison's Astral Weeks and Thomas Dolby's Flat Earth.
I don't know how other people feel, but I like the fact that you explore a lot of stuff that I'm unfamiliar with. The optimum ratio for me is maybe 70% unknown to 30% known, but then I never had a vast album collection, tended to concentrate on a few artists I really liked. Cheers.

I was told: "We have too many violinists, could you pick another instrument?" when I launched my noncareer as cornetist for various Charlotte school bands. Since that time, I have tried my hand at many instruments, and I found Saxophone to be one of the easiest to get killer sounds from. I should 'splain that "killer" was a term used in the olden times for "insane", "bad", "fire" and other terms which actually indicate something good, ironically. I say...go for it, Justin. Did you know Justin Hayward's middle name is David...like Thoreau?
Phil Glass has done some great work for Saxophone as has the California Saxophone Orchestra, I believe they are called.
The orgiastic quality of Kate's song might be due to the fact of a saxophone having roughly the same size and shape of the male organ and/or "mellotron", as I call it.

When I was very young I did not like saxophone at all. There was a band leader in some of those boring TV shows who played sax and since I did not like the music I did not like the instrument. Jimi Hendrix taught me how wonderful the instrument actually can be by his song Rainy Day Dream Away from Electric Ladyland. Since I heard that I love it. You can ceate so many divers sounds and atmospheres with it - if you can . One of my favorite songs of all times is "Will You?" by Hazel O'Connor from her movie "Breaking Glass" just because of the saxophone part. Not only the cherry on the cake but a complete cherry tree. Incredible. Or should I say: Unbelievable?

Partic that ending, sounded like the keys and sax were just practicing scales through that overlong outro. Very disappointing. *Just a thought JP, but how about a few more instrumentals.
