    There were many artists whose debut album revealed their wondrrful talent, it's very apparent with Kate Bush with The Kick Inside. So different at it's time of release, and she continued this trend with subsequent albums, you were never disappointed with Kate!

    Strange Phenomena is one of my favorite songs on the album. It's so dreamy and takes me to another world. I recommend listening to it at night, it's magical. It's a very spiritual song. I agree that her vocals are so bewitching, I think the word bewitching and Kate Bush are synonyms at this point... Kite is such a fun and groovy song that makes me so happy and filled with energy, I think she said she was inspired by Bob Marley. Wonderful reaction, can't wait for the next one! Please do two songs next time too!

    It's a lot of fun watching you listen to Kate's debut album. It's so funny when I think about her career over time and how much she matured. My preference is obviously for her middle career (The Dreaming & Hounds of Love) with another peak at Aerial, but then you go back to The Kick Inside and you remember how much talent she had right form the start. Still a lot more great music to come on this album!

    "Kite" is one of the two songs she performed in her first TV appearance some days before the album was released in German TV.
    For those who are interested : th-cam.com/video/vyUgEm4J5D0/w-d-xo.html
    Another song that comes to my mind because of the title is "Kites" by Simon Dupree and the Bog Sound. Before the Shulman brothers founded Gentle Giant they were members of that band who had a hit with that song. It is from 1967 so it sounds very mid60s and is still very far apart from the music they did later on but already outstanding for the year it was released : th-cam.com/video/dov7T44rDag/w-d-xo.html

      Danke for that German TV appearance - wasn't aware of that!
      The choreographed "Kite" at her famous Hammersmith show is well worth a watch, too.

    In “Strange Phenomena”, the line “G arrives, funny had a feeling he was on his way” is said to refer to David Gilmour, who helped produce Kate Bush’s first professional demo tape, which led to her being signed by EMI.

    • @hijikaelemenope3127
      @hijikaelemenope3127 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I always thought G. was refererring to Gurdjieff, since Kate was very much into his teachings by the time ("He has the answers - Oh mani padmé um"...). But your interpretation fits also, like with any good song with good lyrics :) !

    • @markjohnson4217
      @markjohnson4217 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @HighHopesBass I have never heard David Gilmore ever being referred to as 'G', and he has no connection with the theme of this song. It is actually a reference to Gurdjieff, affectionately known by his students as 'G', a man who possessed extraordinary powers.

  • @SIRRUBADUBDUB

    An absolutely beautiful album that always delights. I listen to this every single year and if anything I love it and appreciate it ever more. If I had this music at the end, I could truly go happy

  • @markjohnson4217
    @markjohnson4217 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    "G arrives" is a reference to Gurdjieff. He was often referred to as G by his students. Even if they hadn't been in contact for months, they would often sense that he was about to show up just before he arrived. Gurdjieff had this kind of potency or 'prescence of being' that his students could not explain.

    Sometimes it takes a while to get in the mood for Kate. Just waking up, many mini dreams of hitting the snooze button, sometimes I’m just not connected. This didn’t happen today. Not saying I understood all that was going on when hearing but, it was somewhat enjoyable.
    I don’t, and never have pulled up lyrics and wiki to listen to a song, I just listen. I don’t always know what’s going on… your analysis and reading the comments help a lot.
    My Dad used to build me kites out of paper bags and wood strips and paint a large original black and yellow Batman symbol on it. I was in heaven trying to get that thing flying. Usually, it did well, other times, ended up in the trees or wires. Good times.
    Thank You for bringing that special memory back through this music.
    Peace and Bat Music

    Kite is about Kate's visualization of becoming a kite and flying at night under a diamond sky - hence clear sky with many stars.

  • @thomasjones6025

    Kate’s vocals lend themselves to promote the character/ story, as in Kite, she swoops her voice like a kite in the sky, Strange Phenomena is beautifully told from a female perspective, the blues referred to - the monthly arrival for many females, she is like no other, as others followed in her wake.

      Absolutely. I remember at the time the consensus among reviewers was basically that it was not bad, but a rather rushed and slightly disappointing follow up to a classic debut. Thing is, even though it's not *quite* as good as The Kick Inside, it's still jam packed with great songs.

    I remembered seeing KB live on Saturday Night Live, and remembered that I really loved her performance, but I didn't really search her out, and eventually forgot about her. However, in 1989 or 90, I remember watching a late-night weekend show called "NightFlight" and they played Kate's "Live at the Hammersmith Odean," and it immediately took me back to her SNL appearance, and I was completely hooked I immediately bought her entire catalog, and have been listening ever since. I was planning to go to London and somehow get a ticket to one of the "Before the Dawn" concerts, but I wound up in the hospital that July for nearly 3 months due to a sudden illness, and missed out on the chance. I honestly wish she would have released the concert on video, though the concert CDs are amazing.

    "Kite" with its reggae influence is not bad but this track does not particularly hold my attention, on the other hand I really like "Strange Phenomena" with its slightly surreal atmosphere between dream and reality. In terms of its atmosphere and Kate's vocals, this track already reminds me of certain songs from her third album Never for Ever. The tone is already set from her debut album !

    I first heard both of these songs in a rented videotape of Kate's Hammersmith Live 1978 concert. So it was even more enchanting to see Kate and her dancers pantomime the songs - "Kite" is a fun experience. It was also interesting technically to see the early use of a wireless microphone to allow for free dance movement, something that would later be widely used by pop stars like Madonna.

  • @TheoZoffrok

    Kate Bush is a stone genius, obviously. One aspect of her music that maybe doesn't get quite enough attention (people talk about her imagination, her voice, her production originality, etc) is her sheer pop smarts. So many of her songs display her brilliance at song construction, with superb bridges connecting verse to chorus. Strange Phenomena is a great example of this, with a build up out of the verse, and then the last chord of the bridge held for two bars, raising tension, before the glorious release of the chorus. At nineteen (and many of these songs were written when she was younger), she already had a pop sensibility that would have earned an approving nod from a Brill Building veteran.
    Another extraordinary thing was how unabashed she was when it came to writing about taboo subjects like menstruation and incest (just you wait Justin!); and while plenty of songwriters have written about sex, few have written a song as intimate as Feel It.

    Om Mani Padme Hum is a buddhist mantra. I grew up in buddhist family and when I first heard the song I immediately had to look up the lyrics to make sure Kate really did write the mantra haha

    • @LMS_HQ
      @LMS_HQ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Om mani padme hum is an ancient Buddhist mantra. In English, this rhythmic chant literally translates to “Praise to the Jewel in the Lotus.” This might not make much sense to new yogis or even to well-practiced yogis, but the mantra’s essence is powerful and pure.

    Afternoon, Justin. Dave from London, marvelling at The Warmth Of The Sun (70 degrees in March ain't too shabby here!). And Kite is the ideal song for a day like this. You're right that it evokes a carnival at the seaside, and the jaunty calypso rhythm is like kites in a sea breeze. Love it. In the 90s, Dutch power popper Valensia also loved writing songs in this style. You also name checked bassist David Paton - a very underrated singer too, and his band Pilot had some big UK hits in the early 70s, like Magic and January. P.S. my song ref The Warmth Of The Sun is by The Beach Boys, also great for a spring-like day.

      I agree, great album. It took a little bit longer to get into it than it did with a few of her other albums, particularly like the track There Goes a Tenner which to me has a similar feel to a couple of her earlier songs like James and the Cold Gun and The Wedding List. Suspended in Gaffa, All the Love and Houdini are a few other favourites.

    The Indian chant diversion didn't bore me in the least. Pretty essential to a real reaction listen in fact. Both fantastical songs done fantastically. And one following the other is perfect since one is about mysterious unexplained connections and the other about making a connection with a very common human made object taking flight and being transformed by it.

    The 80's Chanteuse, Kate Bush, is certainly an acquired taste. Her collaboration with Peter Gabriel on "Don't Give Up" and her work with The Bulgarian Women's Choir on such greats as "A Deeper Understanding" + David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) on "Rocket's Tail" cemented her status as an 80's classic Diva. IMHO Her vocal pitch puts some people off, yet it's quite mesmerizing once you allow yourself to accept it's quirkiness. I love that about her. Great selections JP...Cheers!

    Om mani padme hum
    It’s a mantra used in various meditation techniques. The words themselves only have meaning to a select few, but the act of the chant allows people who have been taught decent meditation techniques to move beyond the immediate concerns of life and start to centre themselves.
    You’ll sometimes hear it even as a simple ‘OM’.
    Also, it’s no coincidence that you associate the word padme with the character Padme in Star Wars. George Lucas studied many cultures and legends and myths before writing Star Wars, as he wanted to create familiarity in the viewer without slapping them in the face with it. George has spoken about this, although he’s evasive on exactly when and how he does this. But a large speculation revolves around Darth Vader being very similar to how Dutch language says Dark Father.
    One other thing that this song, the 3rd cut on the debut album, brings into focus, is that Kate has no hesitation in acknowledging her gender and it’s relation to motherhood, fertility, sensuality, and sexuality. You’ll hear it often on this album especially; she will write from lyrical perspectives that a man could only fake his way through, and not very convincingly. I am always struck by how awesomely feminine Kate’s lyrics and viewpoints are.

    It's hard to explain the impact this album had in 1978. Suddenly here this 19 year old girl singing about subject that were taboo until then, periods, incest, pregnancy, and being a woman and quite frankly enjoying and lusting after sex. it was quite astonishing at the time, and too much for some people. But not me...

    The comments below cover things pretty well. The first two albums reveal a great (mature) songwriting talent with ambition and wide reach in lyrical material. She is backed by very professional sympathetic musicians BUT her vocal timbre is not always pleasant. I too find her screechy at times, especially on Wuthering Heights and Strange Phenomena. Luckily as her voice matured she was able to match the vocals to the songs and few would deny that Hounds of Love deserves a place on the all-time greats list.

    Kate Bush is 100% responsible for the completely unreal idea of the "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" phenomena. Not her fault, she's just doing her thing, it's all about the loser fucks creating this ridiculous expectation.

    You're turning me into more of a Kate Bush fan. I somehow know all these songs, but can't remember seeking them out. Don't really know why not. Her voice? Nyet. A voice is something you get used to if it's not entirely your predefined idea of what a voice should be right away. Once you tune in to Kate's voice it's great. (If you need to first tune in.) Properly authentic. Not re-formed according to the prescribed shape of some cookie cutter. Anyway for some reason I'm hearing them better now, so more to enjoy in life.
