Ford Mondeo Mk5, Dead as Door Nail Steering Rack

  • Ford Mondeo Mk5, Dead as Door Nail Steering Rack.
The first electronic power steering rack on a mk5 for mondeo to fail at 162k miles.
fitted a used rack rather than buy a new one and was unable to find a control module as it seems the rack comes with the motor and control module as one unit.

Went to RockAuto's website here in U.S. and (apparently?) the same part is the same price that Mo was quoted, here in the 'states if you go to a discount auto parts store. I imagine the cost at a dealership is a few hundred higher ....plus installation if you don't want to do it yourself. Not sure what it would cost used.

Mine's got 180k km, and service said once that it has a bit of play, but normal for the milage. Steering is spot on when driving.

Well Alan, I have to tell you this problem is STILL showing up. My Moneo has developed the fault with the steering rack, and I have been trying to source a replacement since before Christmas 2023. The list price of a Ford New Part is around £2,500 I am told. I have tried to get the rack reconditioned by a firm in Bristol but they are returning it without a fix. (Long story) Apart from this issue, a replacement starter motor £400 - worth! just for the motor, and numerous flat battery problems due to an unidentified current drain, it's been a great car. I cant believe that I may have to scrap the thing, If there is any advice you can give I would be most appreciative. It seems there is a better chance of finding hens' teeth and rocking horse poo-poo than one of these. Incidentally the mileage is 39,000 miles on a 2016 reg Mondeo Eco

I have seen a focus do this with the exact same fault codes. But once I cleared the fault codes the rack just started working again and hasn’t had a problem since. It was like a glitch in some sort of safe mode. Did your fault codes just come straight back on when you cleared them ?

Hi Alan, have you heard anything about the MK5 steering rack motor bolts shearing off due to corrosion (3 bolts) and requiring a new rack @ £1500 a throw. Apparently in the US Ford have issued a recall on their Mondeo (Fusion) to replace the bolts and apply anti corrosion coating. In the UK Ford are saying there is no issue, but lots of people have had it happen over here and Ford won't help out. I just wondered if you had come across it on your fleet, apparently it is possible to replace the bolts, but I'm not sure if it's a DIY job or not. Thanks for all your videos, they are a great help.

good question...this cars rack failed between xmas and the new year when there were about 15 taxis parked up doing nothing as a lot of drivers were on holiday so i thought we go for a used unit to save money and take a chance...the car was finished and back on the road by around 9th january as was 80% of this video done, this video was then shelved until 29 jan where i finished a few clips, but usually any other time of the year when all cars are on the road it would have been a new rack, and get the job done asap,

@@MrDavos87sounds like a software issue with that bcm fault. If you rev the engine over 3500 rpm and it goes into limp mode that points towards low fuel pressure. I would have a fuel pressure leak test done on the injectors and quite possibly a proper software update but it’s hard for me to really say without seeing the car first.
