This is so sad with your generation. Not knowing when to laugh in case you offend someone. This is exactly what Gervais is fighting against. I am the same age as Gervais and it’s simple for us, if we find it funny we will laugh. We are honest with ourselves.

      34 here, & I'm the same.
But people barely 10 years younger than me, just are caught up in such trivial bs.
It's so weird now, people I've known in the last decade just 7 years behind me, like, people that would've been in first year @ school with me when I was in last, just completely separate world views.
I mean you used to get right & wrong & get when you were wrong for reasons you know didn't understand at the time.
And now we in the english speaking world don't even know what men & women are, & worse t han that, now can't even talk about it, society is not in a good place when simply having the discussion is now impossible.
That's only a way of controlling people & nothing else
Thank christ for comedians who can keep these subjects on the table in an engaging humerous way.
Especially the way Gervais uses the explanation as his form of comedy, isn't observational comedy fantastic, love it when it gets self aware.

I find American’s, regardless of the generation they’re from, seem to be the most easily offend people in the world. It’s like they actually go out of their way to find something offensive. So what you’re offended!!! As the great comic Steve Hughes has said, nothing happens when your offended, you don’t wake up with leprosy!!! 🙄

There are only a very small number of idiots who think humour should stop at offense. People like Gervais blow this problem massively out of proportion. Possibly he does this for comedic effect. It is in reality incredibly small. If it weren't, his career would have ended years ago.

When my uncle died I got called to the house with my family by my aunt (he lived with her - he was 43). For some reason the coroner/police took about 4 hours to turn up (major communication errors apparently). Long story short it wound up with around 10 of us basically sat around his body laughing and joking with cups of tea whilst we had to wait. We went between crying and laughing for hours and I mean belly roaring laughter. It is just how we cope. Massively so. Meant a hell of a lot of agro when the police officer finally turned up but like I said. Very long story. Point is - laughter is essential, especially in tough situations.

      @Unknown-ov2kz 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Ciara-ASMR Most people believe that science doesn't support trans people, until you learn past the "basic biology".
For example, intersex is far more common that what people believe (between 1% and 2% of the population is intersex, which is about the same percentage of the population that's ginger, or has green eyes, it's really not a new shocking thing). Some examples of different ways someone could be intersex: They could be born with XX chromosomes and assigned male at birth; they could be born with XY chromosomes and assigned female at birth; they could be born with an ovotestes, they could be born with an ovary and a teste, they can be born with all kinds of variations of different sex characteristics, and I think that's awesome and beautiful! Also, fun fact, the gene that "holds" the teste blueprint (if you will), is not even on a sex chromosome! It's on chromosome 17 - which everyone has! Furthermore, a gene on an X chromosome that [I believe produces a protein that] stops that initial gene from working. On a Y chromosome, there's a gene that will stop the gene on the X chromosome working that would have stopped the "teste blueprint" holding gene from working, so the "teste blueprint" holding gene can go ahead with it's intended plan. Kind of crazy how the teste gene is typically intended to work, and just shows how many steps can vary from the initial intention.
Also, it's found that trans people's brains are more closely aligned with brains of their cis (not trans) peers' brains of the same gender (for example a trans man's brain is closer to a cis man's brain than of a cis woman's brain, and for trans women, it's closer to a cis women's brain of a cis man). This shows that there is a very real and underlying scientific basis for the existence of trans people (literally on Wiki if you want more info about this - it links to the actual studies and research papers as well).
The reasons saying certain things can be so harmful for a community that is so significantly marginalised, is it helps perpetuate false beliefs about trans people that feed in to harmful stereotypes and misinformation. It creates an atmosphere of "this is totally acceptable" and then the line gets pushed and keeps on being pushed, even when it gets to physical harm (see recent case of Brianna Ghey in the UK).
Also, saying things when there is so much hate towards a community already, makes it tougher for people to live. Just look at the suicide rates, suicide ideation, and self harm of trans people, especially trans youth.
The "cancelling" of Gervais is other people using their right to free speech to call him out on it. Freedom of speech is not freedom of consequences.

I am pissing myself laughing as boobs were out and girls rolling around and screaming abuse at each other and remembering how just a few hours ago my father in law was telling me how peaceful life is there. When we get home my In-Laws are " FUMING " with me ?.... How DARE I call those women " Red Indian's " ! "I certainly laughed at his trans jokes and, whilst I do have my views on the subject, it doesn’t mean I hold any malice towards trans people in any way. As is so often said, it’s just a joke."

@@tracylf5409 I’m a gay man in my 40s. I’ve spent the past 30-40 years having jokes at my expense. From comedians, work colleagues, friends (lighthearted digs). So yes, I know exactly what it’s like. Physical threats, less so personally (although I’ve close friends who have had this).
But I have this thing called a sense of humour. As I have already stated, if there’s no malice meant, then what’s the problem? Take yourself too seriously and others will too.
Gaslighting? The definition of gaslighting (Oxford English Dictionary) is: “To manipulate (a person) by psychological means into questioning his or her own sanity.” Now if a joke without malice or genuine ill-feeling meets this criteria in your head, I’d argue that the joke isn’t the thing you should be focusing your immediate attention on.

My colleague was pulled up into the office and asked if I might have been offended 😥 Nobody asked me if I was offended ! Of course I wasn't in the slightest bit bothered by being called ' Jock ' . Just the day before I had called my friend and colleague a fat bitch ! ( Which we had both laughed about due to the fact she was on a successful weight loss plan ) . I work with a colleague who has dwarfism , hardest little worker ever . Her nickname is Midge . She loves it . Banter is good as long as it isn't a cover for bullying behaviour . We both laugh means we both get the joke . I also agree with Joel‘s friend: there are some things that are so horrifying and so frightening that the only way to deal with them without going mad is to laugh. I have also heard jokes about the Holocaust (and I live in Germany; you can imagine how sensitive people can be about that subject!). They turn the tables and turn the oppressors into the idiots and the victims into the victors without, however, making light of the horrors that were experienced.

Here's a thought, if you feel you should hold back your natural response because of cancel culture or the horrible way that the woke mobs go after people, then who is the one actually being oppressed?
I've heard this from several intelligent commentators: "If you think, you have to risk offending people"
As I've grown older and learned the value of being true to myself, I've found that ignoring my fears, and doing what I know to be right serves me better in my overall well being, than doing what other people tell me to do.
If I'm not true to myself, how can I be true to anyone else?
I'm not saying that you have to do the same, but I would recommend thinking through the impact on yourself of surrendering to fears versus doing the thing that your inner self knows to be right.

Exposure to other cultures, to other ways of thinking and doing things is truly the value of traveling, in my opinion, especially for young people. Yes, it's really cool to see the sights that are different from what's in your own city, state or country; to see mountains and oceans and lakes; to see great temples and fantastic architecture; to see wild animals and plants whose size, shape and functions in the food chain were something you knew nothing about! And those experiences are valuable moments in themselves. But what truly impacts your life is the realization that other ways of thinking, other ways of living that make people think and feel the way they do. That is what brings growth to your mind. Lots of young people have their small-town minds blown when they leave home to attend college and meet people from other states who do things differently than they do. You've taken it that big step further by visiting another continent and embracing the fact that other ways of thinking are not necessarily always right or wrong, not necessarily better or worse; they're simply different. The woke culture is getting pretty bad here too. I get your stance that the subject of trans is complex, but honestly, I really wonder whether the current climate is actually benefiting trans people, or anyone for that matter. Yes, they have more visibility now, but the debate is so hardened, people can't say what they think and what they worry about anymore. Here in the UK, a female musician with a history of having endured sexual abuse by men was canceled and a company refused to pay her money they owed her, because she said she worried about feeling safe in a women's space like a bathroom where trans people were allowed.
My nan (grandmother)'s neighbour and friend was trans and they got on so well. The word trans was never even mentioned, there was no fuss. Never did I think of her as a man, she was just a lovely human being. I would hate for her to feel excluded in any way, but I don't think the harsh current climate is doing anyone any good.

Ticketmaster crashed several times and was so insane he had to add over a hundred more dates which all sold out too ! I was 8 hours and got tickets almost two years after. Great video, JPS. It is cool that you now feel confident enough to express your own feelings about these matters. Comedy is a great way to process challenging information and Ricky Gervais has done so much to explore this topic. For me, being offended by a joke is a signal to examine my feelings more closely and I am grateful to Ricky for giving me an intellectual basis for this process. I do not know how you cope with all that 'woke' stuff around you. The right clearly uses 'woke' to deflect from their complete lack of ideas to make better for the American people while the left just appear to want to colonise some spurious moral high ground. Both are to be resisted in the name of freedom of thought. Wtf is 'woke' anyway: I have not yet heard a satisfactory definition

    • @frglee
      @frglee 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Merriam-Webster defines 'woke' as 'aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)'
'Anti-woke', which is clearly quite fashionable with rightists at the moment, seems to imply the exact opposite - that you shouldn't be aware and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues pertaining to racial and social justice. So what does that mean? Carte blanche for racists, homophobes, transphobes and attacks on civil rights and freedoms? I think some people should think a little harder on this issue.

Our teams utilized " black humour " to it's maximum to divert our brains from the smell, sound, feel and sights of what we were doing....no disrespect to the person ( often deceased )....but a way to protect our own mental health, when you recall the comradeship and inappropriate joking and not so much the horror.

The thing is Joel, someone will ALWAYS be offended. But, and this is the important bit, just try and be respectful.
If someone wants to have X, Y, or Z pronouns, so what. Good for them. What difference does it make to my or your life? None. It could make them happier, and frankly every little helps. So just respect that.
The whole transgender thing is blown WAY out of proportion. The percentage of people in that situation is tiny. But their struggle is real, and they should be respected.
Literally NOBODY wants to have their gentials removed to have a better chance at some sport, so that BS argument needs to stop.
The amazing weirdness about which bathrooms they use just baffles me. Unless you have an organ to pee standing up, you're going into a stall anyway, at which point nobody can see anyway, so what's the problem? I'll not get into the number of unisex bathrooms I've been in, nobody cares then because there are stalls. Hell, I've been in a mens bathroom when a woman has come in because it's quicker. She goes into a stall and nothing is said. This particular argument seems to say more about the perverts complaining because THEY would sexually harass the opposite sex, than it does about trans people who don't do anything like that.
The main take-away is: Just be respectful to others, whatever their assigned or perceived sex, colour, religion (or lack there of), sexual orientation, .... The world would be a way better place if people just stopped being egotistical busybodies, and just "loved thy neighbour"... you know, like that dude in the made-up book said.

Except for the small group of people who are either offended on the behalf of others, who may or may not be offended, and those who, somehow think they are special, and above, having jokes be made it their expense, even though the really good comedians, go after everything. Being able to laugh at yourself is kinda important.
