I was lucky to have met Dave Allen twice as a kid. The first time was when we sat next to each other on a plane flight and he kept me (a 6 year old) entertained making jokes over his missing half finger. The second time was a year later when we went to see his live show and he happened to remember me and we went back stage afterwards. I'll remember him as a kind and funny man taken too soon.

If everyone could laugh at themselves we would have a much better world. Dave saw the funny side of religion but he had huge respect for people's religious beliefs and always finished his shows with the words "May your God go with you".

Dave Allen was Irish but lived and worked mostly in the UK he broke the stupid old fashioned mould of comedy and set the stage for the new stand up comedians like Billy Connolly etc. I grew up watching his brilliant delivery calm clever and he made you think with his pauses and slow method and with just a glint in his eye and a slight subtle smile you got the hidden joke too.

Dave Allen was a contraversial figure back in the day. There were frequent calls for him to be banned and tone down his act but he didn't comply. He broke down barriers at a time when North Ireland was having The Troubles. Truly a leading comedic light. He is missed, I wish I could see him commenting on the state of the world now.

    • @ChelseaPensioner-DJW
      @ChelseaPensioner-DJW 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

A lot of the banning calls weren't even from Catholics, ie Mary Whitehouse, who set herself up as the morals upholder for the British Isles, where in fact she was just a blue rinsed old biddy, who'd forgotten what a good Rogering was like.

I agree that comedians should be able to make jokes about anything *without punching down* (because that’s just bullying). Not a stand-up, but the best humorist I know to strike that balance was Terry Pratchett. He could be incredibly scathing of systems and conventions, and was always extremely funny, but he always took people’s humanity seriously.

Dave was very much his own style of comedian. His stand up was done sitting down and his style is of a natural storyteller, relaxed with a drink in his hand entertaining his friends. He started in the 1960s and ended in the 1990s, but his heyday was the 70s and 80s where he was very popular on British TV. He wasn't a family comedian on Saturday evening, he didn't host game shows or chat shows. He had his own shows, an later when the kids are in bed, consisting of his storytelling, broken up by his usually dialogue free sketches. That is the odd thing he did all that talking but then treated the inserts as bits of silent comedy. The main controversy he had was being I think the first to use the F word on TV in the UK. He was a great entertainer and I think his material has not dated all that much, given most of those pieces are 40 or 50 years old. I don't think you got the Gideon reference. The Gideon Society used to put bibles into hotel rooms.

His Tv career took off out in Australia in the early `60`s I believe. He returned to the U.K. & in the late `60`s, had the first of his own Tv show`s here. I started watching him with my family at the end of the `60`s & the `70`s onwards. In this new decade his program was called (Dave Allen At Large) & I believe, any clips like this are from then. When he is going grey are the later `80`s era & the Airplanes one you mentioned was from his `90`s one-man shows.

I am not sure about not taking stuff too seriously. The subversive nature of Dave Allen's comedy contributed, as all good comedy should, to helping people free up their thinking so that they became more willing to interact with non-traditional views. George Carlin was a leading exponent of this humour in your own country and of course there have been many since. Of course it helps if, both of these, you are also bloody funny. Laughing at something slightly taboo is a transgressive act so one immediately becomes complicit to some degree. Clever, huh?

It's wonderful when we can look back over our life experiences and laugh at ourselves especially the child abuse we suffered at the hands of religious fairytales . Dave Allen was part of my growing into adulthood and taking the reigns for being responsible for my own life .

Hey Joel. Did you notice he only had half an index finger on his left hand? Seems odd now but it was just something that was not noticed by everyone back in the day.

For anyone wondering when this was broadcast, it's most likely from one of his own TV shows which aired in 1968 and from 1971-79 in the UK. Lots more info on Wikipedia..

My Mother was a devout Catholic & was less than happy with me as a budding atheist, but she watched the Dave Allen show & 'enjoyed' it.

Comedians do a better job of pointing out the total bullshit of religion than a thousand TH-cam atheists can manage 😂😂😂

I had the good fortune to bump into Dave Allen twice as an old age pensioner. I was the old age pensioner, I mean, not Mr Allen. Anyway, we were sitting next to each other at a bus stop in Scunthorpe and he kept me (an 84- a year old) entertained making jokes about my glass eye and hip replacement. The second time was a year later when I went to see his live show and he didn’t remember me. Still, I’ll remember him as a soulful and gentle human being taken too soon.

Dave Allen came onto the scene in the 1970's and his form of comedy was different as his jokes took the form of story telling. Although Irish, he was not successful in Ireland in those times because of his jokes about Catholicism.

One thing I love about Dave Allen is the fact that at the end of his show he always says "May your god go with you" showing his respect for all peoples beliefs

He died. Hilarious well-liked tv comedian.
He changed his last name to Allen when he moved to England so that he would be at the top of the Yellow Pages for to get work. True.
