I grew up in Duluth, and people think I'm weird for saying that I miss those winters, but I sure do - and I really miss Lake Superior. As a family, we used to rent a cabin in Ely for a week in the summer....man, that is some beautiful country.
dangerous temps.. I was looking at the NWS windchill chart just to see and it shows a relatively light wind of 10 mph would take your temperature down to -66 and says frostbite time is less than 5 min.. ouch!
Shuge, you're an inspiration. I keep coming back to your old videos to pump me up for the winter and you never fail to crack me up. I've ended up adopting a lot of your clothing/hat/glove layering ideas into my own system, so thanks for that!
You and your compadre are the only ones we've seen on YT that has done a 2 day hang in those kinds of temps and truly enjoyed it! You guys have balls of ice! Had to sub ya!
I use to live in Minnesota. This video displays beautifully why I don't think I'll ever go back. Well, in the winter at least, I miss the fishing dearly. Not ice fishing... I hate ice fishing. Anyway, the cold up there is insane. I try to explain to people just how cold -30 to -60 really is, but unless you've felt it, there is no way to explain it. But what boggles my mind the most, is how Minnesotans look forward to the cold, and complain when it doesn't get cold enough to snow or freeze the lakes. I appreciate your enthusiasm, thanks for posting the vid, it was a nice reminder. Thanks for bringing up some cold, cold, cold memories... frigidly cold memories. Bundle up and stay warm!
watching again....so pretty all that white snow.....nice fire.....thanks again for the video.....very enjoyable....but never seen anyone camp in that cold....whoa
Picked up my Boreal shirt today. I have you to blame! This is an excellent shirt and will serve me well here in Canada. I'm looking forward to wearing it next winter while snowshoeing and spending time in the Boreal forest. Thanks for showing us this garment. For anyone spending time in the outdoors, it is definitely a piece of equipment you want to own.
18:49 hahaha I was honestly thinking the whole video, "Damn, camping in -40F, that is awesome. I'd love take this guy camping in AZ in July." Excellent video.
At 14:30..."And I sure do like this coffee from the hammock...". HA HA HA HA HA!!! Ah, to keep it light and spontaneously insane at -40F. I have the same condition myself...it keeps life fun no matter what the temperature. Enjoy every moment...you only get it once! Great vids...love them!
I get the Sylvester Stallone mouth at freezing and below. I couldn't do it bro. I need between 70 and 120 F in my life. I'm in Kansas and it's been cold and windy. How can you do this laughing with a smile on your face? You are a better man than I am big time! Be careful out there!
Edward Antoine It invigorates to be out there as you know your a bit crazy for doing it! Being mentally ready as well as gear ready makes it fun. Could kill ya'...but what won't. The heat beats me down as a pale Irish feller.
When cabin fever sets in and a man becomes bored and glum, staring at the same four walls for many weeks straight, this is the best cure that I know of... pack up your gear and head out into the woods for a night or two. It is an exhilarating experience to meet the challenges involved and to enjoy the bug-free, snowy scenery. And when you get back to your home you will appreciate its happy comforts like never before.
Man you made me laugh... very informative and entertaining, left me no choice but to sub and to check out your other vids. Thanks for sharing. Big Man in Maine
This is one of my favorite videos when it comes to extreme cold weather camping! I really need to get some of those mukluks and I love the wool sweater but dang! 250 bucks is a bit high on the price; dont get me wrong, I know you are paying for the best of the best but wow. I might have to figure out how to make myself one out of some wool lol. Anyways, thanks for the video and God bless. PS: your humor makes the video!
I'm sorry. I never meant that. What might sound "stupid" to most, could actually be creative/brave for others. Besides, you were experienced and prepared for that adventure. I salute you.

it damn cold up there my dad is from bigfork and the stories he tells from the 50's are hard to belive what they had to do to survive even in an old farm house with wood heat great video keep them coming.
this dude is great. love his enthusiasm. and i find not only greatly entertaining, but slightly humorous how everything thing is all about/relative to the temp! good watchability right here.
I hate California, you Minnesota guys have all the fun. I am a ground sleeper though. Might check out a hammock one of these days. My 22 year old whisper light still works fine.
OK... for the question everyone's been waiting on: How in the world do you do your business in those kinds of temps without getting frostbite on ze gonads? Are you pooping through a hole in yer shorts or what?
I just drop all my lower layers and go. I think the body is working at that morning constitutional moment and actually it feels enjoyable. Especially pulling everything back up and on.
I got into hammock camping because of you, and we're going out next weekend. My first night below freezing, but If you can do -40, I should be fine in the 20's. Thanks for the inspiration!
you got to be used to THOSE temperatures and be in decent shape, that's rare rare cold for the United States and colder THAN 99 percent of the United States ever sees.

I'm thinking at least a couple of grand. Sleeping bag, hammock, cooking stuff, clothes, boots, etc.....GOT to be a bunch of money. And again, if you would rather not answer this question, I am ok with that. Have a great one and again, thanks for a great, entertaining, and informative video!
I have a lot tied up in gear but keep in mind it has been acquired over a long time and this is my serious hobby. More than a couple of thousand. I don't drink so I spend my mad money one gear. some gear I won in a contest. Always felt that fishing or golf or hunting costs more in the long run. Gotta pay to play. Thanks feller. It was a fun challenge to be out there.
11:15 Interesting fact: -40 happens to be the point where Fahrenheit and Celsius intersect. So, you don't have to say "Minus 40ºF". Just saying "Minus 40º" works. And before some smart aleck replies that it's still ambiguous because of Kelvin, I'm going to suggest they learn what they are talking about.
Hey you guys put a smile on my face with all your enthusiasm even after I had a particularly rough night. I wish I could be out in the woods if I wasn't at school I sure would be!
Shug, for the past 6 years we have been winter camping. Thanks so much for planting the seed, and making it look as fun as it really is.. now everyone thinks we are crazy!! And look forward to our yearly trip in to the Northwoods of the u.p.
As a young kid. I would go on wimter camping trips with my Boys amd freeze our ass off. I had a Colrman Sleeping bag rated 45°, didn't have the right clothes paid the price but I loved it. Now 60,+ years later, I read and imagine what it would be like now if I had my youth, and the money to buy the equipment. I love following these stories. Thank You
Woo Hoo Buddy! Down to -40F winter camping! I live in SE Minnesota, near Red Wing and I've never been to the Boundary Waters. My son has camped and canoed up there but not in winter, more like summer. He was visiting up there when the straight line winds came through and knocked down a ton of trees up there. He was camping with his "Big Brother" that night but they were okay. I can't imagine winter camping at -40F. When I have to go out to the barn to take care of my animals I don't even like -12F! We get a lot of wind since we are up on a hill. That doesn't help. Those trails you make are just like the trails we make in our yard to put the animals out on better days. That Strung Out guy has a great set up too! Nice singing! You can carry a tune! True brain freeze! Nothing like some coffee in the morning. I'm sure your body burns a lot of calories trying to stay warm. Too bad about the frostbitten fingers. Enjoy your apple fritter!
We are really lucky to have the BWCA in our state. It is magical summer or winter. I remember those storms up there and saw and still see a lot of the damage. Thanks for the fun comment.
And there was me thinkin I was an ornery sob sittin on top of a mountain in a car in County Donegal Ireland in the middle of winter drunk as a monk up a skunk freezin cold and havin to get a john deere to pull us out the next mornin! Fantastic video amigo! Thanks!
Oh...please...forgive me..."Nebulas" INDEED! LOL! :-)!! God Bless you and your family. Minus 40! Whooo eee! That's not messing around man...no way! I'm going to check out that sweater you mentioned...and its good to see the apparel in action. Take care, dan
I am going hypothermic just watching this! I have 2 jackets on because it has plummeted to 55 here in Phoenix Arizona. LOL. Ely area is beautiful. Best camping experience I ever had was an 8 day boundary waters out and back with my canoe. Went in September and saw only 2 people the entire time. I have winter skied/camped, but never in this kind of cold. Very good video.Thanks.
One time at Mount Leconte we started the hike with rain then sleet followed by 18 inches of snow. When we got on top the temp dropped to minus 22. Because of the altitude over 6500 feet we were absolutely exposed to wind. Mount Leconte is the finest viewing without question in the Smokys. A winter wonderland up high. I had two minus 20 primaloft jackets. I had to wear them both. I had to sleep one of my jackets in my minus 20 sleeping bag. We were stuck there for three days. But the viewing was incredible and so was the pictures I took especially the sunsets. I will never forget that trip.
"MSR, take heed, take heed, don't make me go Coleman!" Thanks for making me laugh this morning. Awesome trip, hats off to you two. That's a place you don't want to screw up with your gear.
I love hammocks, but they way you just take it everywhere with you... It's just amazing!! Your winter trip with the hammock just motivates me to join the hammock club for camping!!!! You rock dude!!!!
Ice tea shot out my nose when you said "Take heed MSR... don't make me go Coleman". Your best line ever Shug. Ha, Love ALL your stuff man. Also like your view/comments on the phantom cold thing.
I camped over the weekend at 18-20 F each night and decided to watch this for the third time. You're extreme! I want to try camping at 0 F sometime this winter.
That was so entertaining! My personal best for cold weather camping in a tent is 27. I woke up in the morning and my bottle of water had frozen and I felt super hardcore. I also vowed to never do such a thing again. I admire people who camp out in the cold! More power to ya and sorry about the finger.
I love the silence of the deep cold. Nature at it's harshest and most peaceful at the same time.
BadgerCheese94 Truth.
"Don't make me go Coleman" I nearly fell of my chair with your delivery of the remark. LOL
I'm not a fan of Coleman.

got Coleman shoes. wore them wanker out in less than two weeks..my sandles from Coleman has more balls

I've always said, you can dress for cold, but there is no way to undress enough for heat. 😀
Rendall Hostetler Exactly. In Utah, it doesn’t get below zero degrees, which I find annoying somewhat.

"Minus 32 in the morning"
I hate that time of day.

Aaron M Not sure I would want too! -40º was good enough for me.

Use Vaseline on the connections of the stove it will help seal them and prevent leakage in cold weather, when the rubber washers get stiff.

4 years late to the video but Vaseline/petroleum jelly, not a good thing to put on flammable gas seals, go with silicone grease.

4.44 Celsius
Agimaso Schandir No
Google a conversion chart, -40 C is correct.
+Agimaso Schandir 0 C is the freezing point of water, so anything above 0 C is above 32 F
And that is a scientific FACT. (lol)

Thank You
Oh, I recall first moving here and winter camping in sub-par equipment. Still lived but was cold!
This dude is a MAN! Seriously, camping in - 30...hardwired differently than most who crave comfort.
We had fun.
Easily the best personality on the Internet...you need to be in movies!!!
Very well done video. And sharing your experience in frigid temps was awesome. I didn't think it could be done! Congrats
I truly slept warm and well. Thankee.
That video by itself is worth a sub. Even my wife liked it. You guys know how to have fun.
Randy Chadwick We thankee....
Thanks for the fun comment.
i used my whisperlite 2 weeks ago, 23 years old and still going strong. bomb proof stove.
+Tony Ungarelli Yessir. Mine did me just fine this Winter too.

+RS Marett Once in a lifetime trip.

+Jason Jardina It was a little in retrospect!
Delightful and entertaining. Love the cold here in Minnesota!
Thankee….me too
In a real survival situation, your attitude would make you unstoppable.
Thanks……I hope for the best. Stay calm and positive. And hopeful. Vigilant.
And there was me thinkin I was an ornery sob sittin on top of a mountain in a car in County Donegal Ireland in the middle of winter drunk as a monk up a skunk freezin cold and havin to get a john deere to pull us out the next mornin! Fantastic video amigo! Thanks!
Sound like you'uns had a good and sousy time out there)))) Trips to remember. I thankee.

We watch this video every winter to get excited
Once in a lifetime trip!
***** I feel the same if I watch it))))) Thankee.
Here was the kicker though. You cant build a fire at the shelter. Still nice though.
Those kinda trips are the best and talked about. Whooooo Buddy.
Really great video! Thanks for all of them.
***** Many thanks and Whooooo Buddy))))
"MSR, take heed, take heed, don't make me go Coleman!"
Thanks for making me laugh this morning. Awesome trip, hats off to you two. That's a place you don't want to screw up with your gear.
botanyboy1 I had to call that stove out. It's been good ever since. Thankee.
I love hammocks, but they way you just take it everywhere with you... It's just amazing!! Your winter trip with the hammock just motivates me to join the hammock club for camping!!!! You rock dude!!!!
+jonathan6strings It was quite a test out there. A quaint challenge. Slept so good and warm it surprised me.
Ice tea shot out my nose when you said "Take heed MSR... don't make me go Coleman". Your best line ever Shug. Ha, Love ALL your stuff man. Also like your view/comments on the phantom cold thing.
Thanks. Yeah on the phantom cold.
I camped over the weekend at 18-20 F each night and decided to watch this for the third time. You're extreme! I want to try camping at 0 F sometime this winter.
+sdbdrum If you got the gear....it is fun.
That was so entertaining! My personal best for cold weather camping in a tent is 27. I woke up in the morning and my bottle of water had frozen and I felt super hardcore. I also vowed to never do such a thing again. I admire people who camp out in the cold! More power to ya and sorry about the finger.
six*impossible*things Looong winter here. One must get out or you end up doing too many indoor chores. Finger took a month to heal.
