Literally watched hundreds of guitar tutorials and you are the first person that I can actually learn from. The way you explain, and annotate strumming patterns and show the guitar fret board with finger placement etc is the best. Keep up the good work and thanks.

I learned the guitar fingerboard in And about the middle 80s. I am glad I did. It was the best thing I ever did. Then I started to learn to read music. Then I learned how to read finger style music. I’ve been playing guitar since about the middle of 1974. I’m 71 years old. I love my guitar. I wouldn’t take anything for it. The best thing I can say for beginners is to listen to you about learning, fingerboard and learn how to read music it stops mass confusion, hope you have a wonderful day. I watch your videos occasionally you teach very well and teach new students. You’re one of the better teachers on TH-cam. Have a great day.👍❤️😄🎸🎼🎵🎶🎸

2 things I rarely do is comment on videos or study theory. Dave has inspired me unexpectedly. I'm self taught on guitar and stuck in a rut. It was only after applying the techniques in this video has it absolutely changed things so quickly. I have only internalised 1 note on the fretboard (A) but already I can feel and hear the value/difference. Excited about prioritising this method. Thanks.

@47BullThe stick with it if you can. I have stopped and started too many times over the last year and lost momentum with the process. Your timing of this comment is uncanny as about a month ago I started practising again and some days I might only get 5 mins however after a few weeks can feel the internalising coming back. I could tell you what fret a note is on but when I am noodling to a backing track I do find, especially with natural notes I just 'see them/recognise them' making it easier to find a triad root or chord shape root.

I learned to play the guitar in August 2018 thanks to your videos. But I was lazy and I only focused on a few easy chords that pretty much every song has. Never learned to play the power chords or the barre chords or the notes on the fretboard. Never learned a fingerpicked song. And because of these, I was embarrassed to say that I could play the guitar. All I did was strum chords. This video has exactly what I need to really learn to play the guitar. So thank you. Hopefully, I won't get lazy and I'll be able to say that I can play the guitar by the end of August this year.

I finished music school majoring in guitar back in 2017, and although I did learn how to play difficult pieces, I never internalized the fretboard. I knew exactly where to look for the notes and I internalized somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 of the fretboard because of multiple repetitions, but I still keep struggling with sight-reading when it comes to intermediate or advanced pieces. I knew I wanted to get better at it, but I didn't know how and it scared me to think about how far I am technically and yet how there's so much more to learn; I felt paralyzed in some sense and needed guidance.
Then I found this video. When you said you wished you'd internalized it way earlier I felt like I was not alone. I have watched your video carefully and I cannot thank you enough for the exercises, they make perfect sense to me. I know what I am going to do with my instrument in the next few weeks! I like to rationalize stuff and I can clearly see how advanced exercises that you offer can help with sight-reading. Thank you! You're an inspiration.

I've been struggling to understand the fretboard for almost 3 years since I've picked up the guitar. Using this method definitely removes the clouds from the road ahead. I knew I should be doing something like this, but never how to actually go about it. Removing all accidentals from the fretboard really opens up an avenue to make the process easier on myself. Sometimes learning is just about hearing a different thought process on an issue.

While jotting down some notes for these exercises, I noticed I was getting a bit confused about up/down terminology as you were presenting things around the 5:10 mark, so I cross-referenced my understanding with a number of sources online. My ultimate takeaway, is that "up" and "down", whether it be directionally along the neck, or across the strings is purely based on pitch, not physical space. If the pitch gets higher, you are going "up". This applies to both movement directions. I believe you may be conflating the two concepts by speaking about moving "up" the neck correctly, while incorrectly reversing the terminology for moving across the strings (which is why I got confused taking down notes). Moving up across strings would mean moving from the 6th low E towards the 1st high e string because pitch is going up.

Nice tips. What also helps is to print out a huge (legal paper- landscape mode) diagram of the fretboard. I have one that has circles around the notes (B&W.) I can then highlight the notes that I want to focus on- even circle in red marker if needed. I have several of these that are highlighted differently to allow me to focus on different things like various scales, chords, pentatonic scales, learning the fretboard one section at a time, etc. It is super useful.
I have also found that if you can memorize the notes vertically in the OPEN position (EADGBE), Fret 5 (ADGCEA) and 12, they serve as great landmarks to then fill in the blanks. That and just practice, practice, practice.
Also, of note, in the first position (mostly frets 0-3) you can go from top to bottom and spell out EFGABCDe and repeat... All great stuff! Learning the fretboard, both pentatonic scales and definitely the Major Scale is essential if you want to really start to play well.

Man, I feel like I’ve been in a rut in terms of playing guitar for quite a few months now to the point where I haven’t played guitar for the past few weeks. This video was really helpful in making me realise that I need to learn and be a bit more structured now that I’ve gotten past that “beginner” level of guitar playing and am heading into an intermediate stage.

Yup theory is definitely the thing that separates beginners from more advanced players. It’ll help you become musically independent so keep learning! :)

This is my first time learning guitar and it is my first instrument and I don’t know anything about music chord. When I first came across your video yesterday I couldn’t understand a thing. Today I wanted to give myself a chance to remember all the chords which you taught in this video. I kinda memorised all music alphabets lesson you teach in this video by taking notes and applied the method you’ve taught. It kinda blows my mind that in 15 mins of just writing notes without watching your video I kinda memorised all your chords formula and its was the easiest and simplest way to remember! Thanks❤ what a life saver 🎉

After hearing these shortcuts and this learning technique, I mastered the first string within 20-30 mins!!!! this was amazing. I was able to play a small version of "Dont let me down" by the chainsmokers using the shortcuts and it was just so cool. Can't wait to practice more and learn the whole fretboard

This is the single greatest YT instructional video I've ever watched. I've always been afraid of learning the notes on the guitar... You've broken it down so simply and succinctly. Thank you!!!

    • @GuitarZero2Hero
      @GuitarZero2Hero  ปีที่แล้ว +1

No problems! Most of all don’t feel you need to cram it all within a couple of days. Take it slow alongside your other guitar practice and over time you’ll have it internalized

  • @petermarskell8902

After playing piano for 10 years as a child, application of my music theory meant nothing for the next 35 years as I refused to lock horns to internalise the fretboard. After all, on a piano, the notes are simply just there to see in a single repeatable pattern. I've got by with knowing just a handful of notes on the fretboard or simply memorising guitar solos without having a clue what notes I was playing. Tablature came out... but that's just a crotch to make music without understanding what you're playing... but it helped. I've just retired and am finally going to commit to getting on top of the fretboard and stop playing blind. Thanks

Memorizing the fretboard was easier than i thought. I was scared of this as a relative new guitarist. But after getting a music teacher and learning basic theory this is very simple. This video helped me to get the fretboard down.

  • @345kobi

I think this may be the best for learning the fretboard.
3/20/24 I am working on "internalizing the fretboard". My plan is to get the A note up to 75 bpm and then move on to B etc.. Not certain exactly how this will improve my guitar playing. I play rhythm (primarily acoustic guitar).
I started on this path because of the apparent credibility of the instructor and the positive comments below the video. If I get a grasp on the long term benefits I will publish it here.
